Car park bites the dust
Popular Parramatta car park to close down from this Monday, February 1
NICOLA BARTON
parra news » Tuesday, January 26, 2021
The Riverbank Car Park is preparing
to close indefinitely, to make
way for the budgeted $840 million
Powerhouse Parramatta project, Parra
News can reveal.
The car park, which is earmarked for
demolition as part of the Powerhouse
development plans, will close from February
1, despite the Powerhouse project
having yet received planning consent.
This means no demolition works are
able to take place on the car park until that
consent is received.
Car park users were recently notified of
the closure via email communications.
The closure marks the next step in
realising plans to build the museum on
the Parramatta River foreshore, despite
significant community pushback.
An Infrastructure NSW spokesperson
confirmed the car park will soon close,
to enable the construction of the Powerhouse
Parramatta.
“Infrastructure NSW is working with the
City of Parramatta to manage the car park
closure including communications with
The Riverbank Car Park in Parramatta will close down from this Monday.
car park users and the community,” the
spokesperson said.
“Although the car park will be closed,
work on site will not start until a planning
consent is received.”
A City of Parramatta Council spokesperson
told Parra News that they don’t predict
the closure of the Riverbank Car Park will
be of impact to drivers, or be of financial
impact to the council.
“Based on our analysis, City of
Parramatta Council has sufficient vacancy
across its CBD parking facilities to accommodate
the parking needs of customers
who would use Riverbank Car Park,” the
spokesperson said.
“Usage of these alternate car parks will
determine any financial impacts to council.”
The Riverbank Car Park is a 506 space,
24-hour multi-storey carpark off Dirrabarri
Lane, Parramatta.
Regular users are encouraged to now use
another of the city’s four secure car parks,
which include Eat Street, City Centre,
Parramatta Train Station and the Justice
Precinct.
Planning approval for the project is
expected to be handed down by the
Department of Planning early this year,
however there have been reports of delays.
Those in opposition of the plans remain
firm in their quest to save and preserve the
historic 19th century home and former
maternity hospital, Willow Grove, which
is also earmarked for demolition.
Rookwood General Cemetery makes
live streamed funeral and cremation
services more affordable.
Funerals have changed to keep the community safe in
these times, Rookwood General Cemetery has therefore
implemented initiatives to ensure family and friends are
able to say goodbye.
Rookwood is trying to ease some of the burden for families
during this diffi cult time. After community consultation,
they have reduced the price of the All Souls ceremonial
venue for funeral services. Weekday services are now $620
(previously $950). A cost-effective cremation service is also
available; along with a no-attendance cremation offering
for families that would like to have a cremation now and a
memorial service later.
“The ritual of a funeral is recognised as an important part
of the grieving process. We offer live-streaming from the
All Souls for no additional cost so families can connect,
support and grieve together after losing a loved one,” says
Crystal Lindsay, Director of Marketing & Client Services.
or call 8575 8100
“Rookwood’s services and memorial areas are created with
dignity and affordability in mind. We believe urgent action
is required so all communities have access to affordable
funeral services”, said Lindsay. “This price reduction is a
small step towards minimising funeral debt and creating
affordability for families”.
Editor’s Note
troy.dodds@parranews.com.au
We know that Parramatta, and Australia
as a whole, is at its best when cultures
come together, creating a vibrant, exciting
society for all to enjoy.
Which is why it’s disappointing that our
Troy Dodds
@troydodds
We must focus on being one
national day, Australia Day, has divided
us so much, with tiresome calls to ‘change
the date’ or cancel the day altogether.
We must find a way forward; we simply
can’t keep having this debate annually.
Australia Day as it stands is a wonderful
celebration of our nation, with enormous
respect and reflection to the sadness the
day brings too. Tinkering with that could
have far-reaching consequences.
Power of sport inspires unity
It was one of the most joyous finishes to
cricket!
Last week, many of us were glued to our
TVs as India defeated Australia in the dying
minutes of the fourth Test to retain
the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Brisbane.
As luck would have it, I was on the road,
driving back from the city to Toongabbie
– and nearly swerving off the M4 as I
hung off ABC radio ball by ball.
Pictures were not needed. The crowd’s
roar told me every time India had scored
a run, creeping closer to the target of 328
(the highest successful fourth-innings
chase at the Gabba in history).
Surely there weren’t more people at the
ground cheering for India than Australia?
Scanning the online reaction, not only
did few Australians begrudge India’s victory
in a series that – given India’s global
strength in cricket – now rivals the Ashes.
Ajinkya Rahane’s team had won people’s
respect and a good many hearts.
What made us respond in this way?
Our nation loves a plucky underdog and
here was a tenacious opponent that never
lost its self-belief.
When India were humiliated in the
first Test in Adelaide, and captain Virat
Kohli returned home, a four-nil drubbing
seemed inevitable.
Then came the incredible fightback in
Melbourne.
An injured Ravichandran Ashwin and
Hanuma Vihari clinging on for hour upon
hour in Sydney to keep the series alive.
Who will forget the exuberant strokeplay
of Rishabh Pant? The rearguard sixthwicket
partnership between newcomers
Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur?
Or Cheteshwar Pujara, bruised and pummelled
but who never fell down for the
count?
Many fans appreciated the Indians’ dignity
in the face of abuse no visitor should
endure. The few louts in Sydney who targeted
fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj. And
our captain needling Ashwin and calling
him a ‘d---head’, along with the immortal
“can’t wait to get you to the Gabba”
(which obviously didn’t age well).
Mark it down to a good person in his
worst moment.
The skipper to his credit has apologised.
But these words were heard by hundreds
of millions of people on the subcontinent.
Our own proud Indian-Australian
community from Epping to North Parramatta,
Wentworthville, Harris Park and
Pendle Hill. And all who know the crossing
of a line.
I think the final reason this series stirred
Entertainment ..................23-33
Business Directory.......34-36
Auto...........................................37-38
something unusual was its staging amidst
a global pandemic.
When COVID broke out in Sydney in
December, there were calls to scrap the
matches.
Then to play them without spectators.
Then to allow grounds that were only a
quarter-full and insist on masks.
How strange it was that we continued
the rites of an Australian summer while
social distancing at home, as suffering
and uncertainty raged around.
I will always remember Siraj, claiming
five wickets on the fourth evening at the
Gabba, and looking up to the heavens.
Tragically, his father had died in India
at the start of the tour. And because life
must go on – he stayed in Australia to fulfil
his dreams.
And finally, Rahane’s unexpected gesture
at the end-of-series presentation, to
hand Nathan Lyon a jersey signed by the
Indian team commemorating his 100th
Test.
Around the world, people continued to
perish in their millions. Yet in Brisbane,
in that humble, decent act between human
beings, we saw the power of sport
to reveal our goodness; to remember our
opponents need not be our enemies; to
bring us together and to heal.
Childcare concerns grow
Under fire Cumberland City Council defends recent childcare centre sell-off
NICOLA BARTON
A
financially stricken Cumberland
City Council’s decision to sell-off
its childcare centres has been met
with great opposition, as concerns for
affordability and job security flow.
Late last year the council passed a motion
with the casting vote of the Mayor to begin
a tender process for an external provider
to manage its long daycare services.
That tender process is now underway,
however those included aren’t not-forprofit
providers.
Since the decision was made, local
childcare educators, families and MPs
have voiced their concerns, particularly
for the flow-on financial impact this may
have during an already difficult period for
many.
At the December 16 council meeting,
some Labor and Independent Cumberland
councillors moved to have the tender
process deferred, however that was shut
down, again with the casting vote of the
Mayor.
Granville MP Julia Finn has been in
discussions with concerned residents
Granville MP Julia Finn is very concerned. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
impacted by the change and is pleading
for the council to reconsider its decision.
“Council’s decision will affect hundreds
of parents and families in my electorate of
Granville, including many frontline and
healthcare workers,” she said.
“I fear the closures will mean that many
working parents will have to withdraw
from the workforce.
“Without local not-for-profit services,
local prices would be expected to rise and
especially affect those families least able
to afford higher fees.”
Cumberland City Council General
Manager, Hamish McNulty, defended
the changes and said there is a need to
reduce the cost of education and childcare
services, which is paid for by all Cumberland
City ratepayers.
“We have a responsibility to every ratepayer
in Cumberland City to ensure our
services are delivered in the most costeffective
way possible,” he said.
“Council’s financial situation is wellknown
and there is currently a high level
of subsidy for these services, with them
running at a significant loss of millions of
dollars each year.
“We have been talking to the market to
determine the most efficient operating
model for Council-run childcare services
and to determine whether interested
parties have the capacity to deliver these
services to a better standard than we
currently do, and in a way that is more
financially sustainable than the current
model.”
Council will retain ownership of the
sites and buildings which provide these
services.
Advantage Childcare Services, Lighthouse
Childcare and The Infants Home
Child and Family Services have been
announced as the potential external
providers.
An outcome on the select tender process
is expected in the first half of this year.
CITY COUNCIL
A Message from
Mayor Steve Christou
An update on COVID-19
Mayor Steve Christou with owner of the Discount Chemist
in Berala, Eddie Cassem.
Last week I visited businesses in Berala and
provided information on COVID-19 testing
clinics in a variety of languages. We spoke
about the new regulations for businesses and
their employees and the importance
of adhering to public health directives.
Stadium’s first concrete pour
The first
concrete cret
pour
of the new stadium
at Granville le Park has taken place and we’re
excited our vision is coming to fruition.
We’re planning to name the stadium
after Rugby legend, Eric Tweedale and
encourage residents to have their say on
the proposal.
It would be a tremendous honour to have
Mr Tweedale, a Two Blues club patron and
the oldest living Wallaby player, be part
of a significant milestone for this first-class
sporting venue in Cumberland City.
The long-lived home ground of the Western
Sydney Two Blues Rugby Club in Granville
is on its way to being transformed into a
multi-use community sport pavilion that
residents and sporting groups can use all
year round.
I know this isn’t easy for residents, or
businesses, but I urge you to come forward
for testing if you have even the mildest of
COVID-19 symptoms. Every person plays an
important role in helping contain the spread.
Help us protect our community, your family, and
your loved ones by being part of the solution.
It’s also a tough time for businesses, so help
where you can by shopping or dining local.
Whether it’s ordering in or shopping from
your local grocer or chemist, it goes a long
way during this time.
seating, change rooms,
a kiosk, referee and medical rooms, a gym,
office and social function space.
The stadium is expected to be complete
by mid-2021.
We are investing in the future of our city
with a more accessible, safer and beautified
environment in our part of the gateway.
This includes an extension of Auburn Park,
improved pedestrian and safety across the
Stubbs Street Streetscape and a pedestrian
cycleway overpass on Melton Street at the
M4 creating an access ramp, which will also
meet disability access requirements.
Funding for the four projects has been
provided by the NSW Government, as part
of the Parramatta Road Urban Amenity
Improvement Program.
I look forward to keeping you updated on
Government’s Maker Projects program.
Not-for-profit Western Sydney Business
Schools in the Parramatta and Cumberland
said.
“This unique program will bring
the opportunities associated with the
Western International Airport and the
Aerotropolis into the classroom, ensuring
students familiarise themselves
through practical workshops.”
General Manager of the Western Sydney
Business Centre, Amanda Brisot, said the
project is all about equipping students
with essential skills that they can use in
the future.
“We’re very excited to be delivering
this educational program in schools
across western Sydney because we know
that our region will be ‘ground zero’ for
STEM-related careers,” she said.
“The generous support of the government
will mean we are able to invite over
300 western Sydney schools, including
schools in the Parramatta region, to
participate in the program which is being
supported by CSIRO.”
The grants are part of the Inspiring
Australia – Science Engagement Program,
and support STEM-related organisations
and businesses to partner with other businesses,
experts, schools and community
organisations to deliver STEM initiatives.
Students are being encouraged to get involved with STEM fields and careers.
AUSTRALIA DAY – SPECIAL COVERAGE
Do something unique
Five great ways to celebrate our national day – from waterslides and wake
NICOLA BARTON
Whether it’s a game of cricket,
BBQ or day out with the
family, we all have our ways of
celebrating what makes us Australian on
January 26.
Whilst this year’s events are slightly
more restricted due to COVID-19, there’s
still plenty of things to see and do across
Greater Western Sydney that’s bound to
get you in the Aussie Day spirit, whilst
keeping the whole family entertained.
So grab your esky, zinc and a pair of
thongs for our top five things to do in
western Sydney on Australia Day.
Get up close and personal with our
native wildlife
What better way to celebrate what makes
us Australian than to explore our unique
and magnificent native creatures.
The new Sydney Zoo at Bungarribee is a
great day out for families, couples, friends
and the like.
Here you can see a huge range of our
native furry friends like koalas and wallabies
or the not so cuddly such as echidnas,
spiders and reptiles.
Pack a picnic lunch or enjoy the Tiger
Pool Cafe or Lion Deck Cafe.
There’s also loads of exotic animals from
Africa and Asia to see.
If you’re wanting to get a bit more up
close and personal, Featherdale Sydney
Wildlife Park specialises in Australian
native wildlife and birds.
Cables Wake Park is a great place to celebrate Australia Day.
Sydney Zoo adult tickets are on sale
online-only for $39.99 per adult and
$19 for children three to 15-years-old.
Featherdale is $35 for adults and $22 for
children three to 15-years-old.
Bask in the Aussie sun and slip down
the slides at Raging Waters
It’s the closest thing we’ve got to a beach
here out west but a day at Prospect’s
Raging Waters is what the summer Aussie
spirit is all about.
Whether you’re looking to laze by the
wave pool and work on your tan or get your
blood pumping on one of their 30 rides,
slides and attractions, there’s sure to be
something for all members of the family.
Cables Wake Park in Penrith.
Happy Australia Day!
This Tuesday, we join together to proudly celebrate this great country of ours.
Whether you were born here or immigrated here, everyone is part of the rich
tapestry that makes up modern Australia.
For our great privilege as Aussies, we owe a debt of gratitude to those who
went before us and an obligation towards those who will follow us.
As we celebrate Australia Day, I invite you to join me in reflecting on both,
and considering how we might make this country an even better place for
all Australians in the future.
AUSTRALIA DAY – SPECIAL COVERAGE
Have a true blue day
The essentials you need to make sure you have a terrific Australia Day
EMILY FESZCZUK
Whether you are patriotic
or not, Australia Day
is the perfect excuse to
throw a party for your household
(and limited guests) at home or in
a local park. Here are our top five
things to ensure you have a top day.
Dress up and decorate
First step of getting into the spirit
is looking the part. You can’t go
past anything green and gold, some
Aussie flag face tattoos to go with
your singlet and of course a pair of
thongs. Pop down to the two-dollar
store to grab some plastic Australian
flags and blow up kangaroo to be the
mascot for your day!
Stay cool
Australia Day is regularly a
scorcher, so make sure to set up your
get together at the beach, river or by
the pool. If all else fails, make a home
brand slip ‘n’ slide. All you need is a
tarp, detergent, a hose and a run-up.
Just remember to slip, slop and slap
and to stay COVID-safe.
Grab some grub
From Vegemite sandwiches, meat
pies and sausage rolls to lamingtons
and pavlova, a feast on Australia Day
is a must. Fire up the barbie and get
snags going with fresh white bread
and sauce. Don’t forget a selection of
ice-cold beers or wine to share!
Bring your best
No matter the game, Aussies love
to win. Get everyone’s competitive
spirit involved with a classic game
of cricket or a good old drinking
contest. If you want to up the stakes,
try a thong toss or a lamington
eating competition. The winner gets
bragging rights for the rest of the day.
Belt out a banger
It wouldn’t be Australia Day without
some true blue music. If Triple J
isn’t your thing then pick your own
mix for everyone to sing along with.
If you are after a Top 50 playlist
and don’t want to do the hard work,
check out our suggestions on page
15.
If you want to create your own,
make sure it includes a mix of classics
and new hits!
Australia Day is a great time to celebrate with family and friends.
“It’s our
happy place.
It’s home.”
Some local residents will officially
call Australia home today, following
the annual Australia Day
citizenship ceremonies.
While this year’s ceremony hosted by
the City of Parramatta Council couldn’t
go ahead in person as usual, residents
who made the pledge said the experience
is still just as special.
Eastwood resident Jing Liu and his two
daughters were among those in attendance
of the online ceremony today and
said they are all very grateful and excited
to officially become Australian citizens.
“It takes a lot to migrate to a new country
but Australia is a place for me and my
family to live comfortably,” he told Parra
Mr Liu migrated to Australia from
China back in 2015.
“We like the cultural diversity here; it
doesn’t matter what language you talk
or where you’re from, it is about the freedom
of each person and I highly value
that,” he said.
“Whilst we all know it’s not perfect, it
still makes me feel comfortable and this
country is tranquil in my heart.”
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Prepare for a wild week as the Sun sashays
through avant-garde Aquarius and
squares disruptive Uranus. Plus Mercury
slows down, stations and then
starts reversing through your sign. So it’s
the perfect time to tap into your Gypsy
Soul and channel your Inner Bohemian!
You’re also impatient to make some
snappy decisions but resist the urge to
be too blunt. With the Full Moon revving
up your relationship zone, consider the
effects your words and actions will have
on those around you.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
If you are responsible and well-informed,
then it will pay off further down
the track. But don’t put your head in the
sand and avoid facing problems Pisces!
The Full Moon urges you to be physically
fit, focused and fabulous. It’s also
time to reach out to influential friends
and positive colleagues who are going
places, as you network up a storm. Your
motto for the moment is from birthday
great and talk show host Oprah Winfrey:
“Surround yourself with people who are
going to lift you higher”.
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Tuesday looks rather chaotic, as unpredictable
aspects upset your previous
plans. So expect the unexpected – especially
involving finances and/or friends.
It’s time to banish boredom and extend
yourself in challenging (and COVID-
Safe) new directions. With the Full
Moon, adventurous Jupiter and restless
Uranus activating your aspirations zone,
your mantra for the moment is from
birthday great Oprah Winfrey: “The biggest
adventure you can ever take is to
live the life of your dreams”.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
With the Full Moon heating up your
home zone, tread carefully with a fragile
family member. It will be easy to say
the wrong thing to the wrong person
at the wrong time, so try to be a super
tactful Taurus! Karma and transformation
play an important role in proceedings
this week. The more generous you
are, the more the Universe will bless
you in return. A friend or lover from the
past could also re-enter your life … but
do you really want to travel down that
bumpy road again?
The Full Moon fires up your brain power
so it’s a good week to focus your mind,
research a subject that has always fascinated
you or enrol in a course of study
for 2021. Jupiter and Saturn also push
you to consider more adventurous options.
So your motto for the moment is
from birthday great, writer Lewis Carroll:
“Sometimes I’ve believed six impossible
things before breakfast”. But expect
a rather wobbly weekend, as Mercury
turns retrograde and plans stall (or even
go backwards).
Thursday night’s Full Moon shines a
bright spotlight on self-esteem, finances,
core values and trust issues. It’s also
time to don your Crab detective cap and
turn on your x-ray vision, as you zero in
on the cause of a problem and come up
with a satisfactory solution. With Venus
and Pluto pairing up in your relationship
zone, make it a priority to do more
for your nearest and dearest. As birthday
great Lewis Carroll wrote: “All that is really
worth the doing is what we do for
others”.
Lions love to hog the limelight and be
the centre of attention – especially when
the Full Moon’s in Leo. But this week, the
focus shifts from you onto the significant
people in your life. Perhaps it’s time
for your partner or your best friend to
shine? Putting others first puts a spring
in your step and a smile on your dial. But
be extra clear in the way you communicate
on the weekend. If you are petulant,
pretentious or impulsive, then relations
with other people will be strained and
unpredictable.
Your days are often organised with military
precision as you try to get everything
100 per cent right. But this week there’s
a fiery Full Moon, plus Mercury (your
ruling planet) slows down, stations and
then starts moving backwards through
your daily routine zone. So strive to be
more spontaneous as you toss your usual
timetable out the window and stretch
your adaptability muscles in unfamiliar
directions. Whatever happens to you …
expect the unexpected and prepare to
pivot!
Librans possess a natural talent for procrastination.
But this week Venus (your
patron planet) pairs up with powerful
Pluto, so it’s time to be strategic and
focused. If you have a passion that you
want to pursue (or a decision that needs
to be made) then resist being distracted
by other people’s agendas. And make
sure deep contemplation is closely followed
by decisive action. As birthday
great Oprah Winfrey observes: “Feel the
power that comes from focusing on what
excites you”.
Thursday’s Full Moon sees you swing
between being sexy and secretive; and
being passionate and possessive. You
could also be thrust into the public
spotlight, so make sure you’re putting
on a good show. But are you stuck in a
career slump? If you resist changes at
work, then you’ll just be left behind in
the backwash. Look for creative ways to
adopt fresh ideas and pivot in your professional
life. And make sure you consult
with colleagues and include them in
your plans.
The fiery Full Moon heats up your adventure
zone so your hasty Sagittarian
side will be switched to full throttle
as you power ahead at top speed. But
expect a frustrating slowdown on the
weekend, when Mercury starts reversing
through your communication and
travel zone. Don’t worry if your spontaneous
approach results in some messy
mistakes along the way. In the words of
French writer Colette (born on January
28, 1873): “You will do foolish things but
do them with enthusiasm”.
You’ve got so many serious responsibilities,
commitments and must-do-tasks
that the last thing you need is a financial
drama. But that’s what you could end
up with, as the fiery Full Moon and retrograde
Mercury shake up your money
zones. Saturn (your patron planet) encourages
you to be cautious and conservative
in the way you spend cash and
communicate with other people. So –
when it comes to finances and business
matters – slow and steady wins the race
this week!
With hearing aids on, do you find it difficult to hear...
If you answer YES to one or more of these questions, a cochlear implant may be right for you.
Pure Gold
Endorsed by the
Centenary of the End of World War I
Limitation: 19,999 worldwide | Finish: Layered in Pure Gold | Quality: Proof | Edition: Uniquely numbered | Diameter: 38.6mm
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM: 2018 marked the centenary of the conclusion of
the First World War, the “war to end all wars”. There are generations alive who have
no direct knowledge of this conflict or of the sacrifice made by all who fought for
their country. Our debt to them is immeasurable making it more important than ever
that we remember their courage with a lasting commemoration. Approved by Her
Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, this new crown coin honours the fallen with a moving,
raised-relief portrait of a digger remembering his mate. In the foreground, a field of
poppies, the symbol of remembrance, are created in hand-applied enamel, providing a
vibrant contrast to the pure, 24-carat gold. Struck to a high specification, only 19,999
numbered issues will ever be minted.
The earliest applications will receive the lowest edition numbers. For this reason,
applications will be processed on a strictly first-come, first-served basis and are limited
to one per Australian household. Successful applicants also qualify to view the next
2021
EMILY FESZCZUK
Homegrown singer-songwriter
Amy Shark has
announced she will be
headlining a national tour,
which will kick off in June
later this year.
The ‘Cry Forever’ tour will accompany
her anticipated new album of the same
name, which is set for release on April 30.
While 2020 was a tough year for the entertainment
industry, Amy ended the year
by winning two ARIA awards and performing
at the NRL Grand Final between Penrith
and Melbourne.
“The way the year started I was even surprised
I managed to have such a strong finish,”
Amy told the Parra News.
“I had only put one song out and went to
the ARIAs just for the free drinks and canapés,
so I was shocked to win ‘Best Pop Release’
and ‘Best Australian Live Act’.
After the success of her last album ‘Love
Monster’, Amy is excited to get back to
what she loves doing.
“It has been so long since I have played to
my actual fan-base in a big room with a full
band so, if it all goes ahead, it is going to be
pretty special,” she said.
“The new album, ‘Cry Forever’, is well and
truly done, it’s basically sitting in Dropbox,
so I am excited to get it out there because if
I could put it out tomorrow I would.”
Planning to play big venues like Qudos
Bank Arena at Sydney Olympic Park on
June 12, the 34-year-old said the music will
still be the focus.
“Since winning ‘Best Live Act’ people
have said I will need to up the ante for the
shows, but the songs are super strong and
I believe in them, so the production won’t
be too crazy, except for some pyrotechnics,
which I love,” she said.
“It will depend how we go over the next
few months and making sure we do shows
in the safest way possible, but I have a lot
in store for this year if everything works
out.”
Amy said she has taken more risks as an
artist but has stayed true to herself with
her track ‘All The Lies About Me’ leading
the way.
“I have grown so much, become educated
about the industry, written about so
many more emotions and gone a lot more
guitar heavy which has been amazing for
this album, but it is still very much my
sound and style,” she said.
“The single ‘All The Lies About Me’ is a
good indication of what is to come with
the new album.”
Amy Shark’s new record ‘Cry Forever’
is out on April 30, visit www.amyshark.
show, visit www.amyshark.com.
TV NEWS
Phone a friend and spread the good
news – the world’s greatest quiz show,
‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’, is back
on Channel Nine. The new series of
special episodes, which airs on Mondays
at 7.30pm, will be hosted by Eddie
McGuire and feature a roll call of the
nation’s favourite celebrities and sports
people, as well as frontline workers. In
the celebrity specials, stars will compete
as pairs in a battle to win $1 million for
their favourite charity. The star-studded
line-up includes actress Rachel Griffiths
with Rhys Muldone, television and radio
personality Red Symons with Wilbur
Wilde, actor Stephen Curry with Bernard
Curry, radio hosts Will and Woody, actor
Samuel Johnson with Hilde Hinton and
singer Ella Hooper with Jessie Hooper. In
the Australian sport stars special, athletes
including basketball legend Andrew Gaze,
AFL hero Gary Ablett Jr, AWFL’s Tayla
Harris, NRL icon Billy Slater, Netball’s
Geva Mentor, Olympican Mack Horton
and Paralympian Jess Gallagher, will be
competing for their chosen charities.
After more than 15 years, the ‘Sex and
the City’ TV series is officially back with
FEBRUARY 1
7.30PM
WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE, NINE
FEBRUARY 3 9PM AFTERTASTE, ABC
three of its four principal cast members
returning. Titled ‘And Just Like That’, the
10-part series will centre around Carrie
(Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin
Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as
they navigate love and friendship in their
50s. Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha
Jones, is not returning along with creator
Darren Star. The production is being
made for HBO Max but will likely screen
on Foxtel here.
New film ‘Coming 2 America’, which
sees Eddie Murphy reprise his famous
role as the prince of Zamunda, will
premiere on Amazon Prime on Friday,
March 5.
Despite being a disaster for Channel
Seven last year, ‘Pooch Perfect’ is getting
a US adaptation, to be hosted by Rebel
Wilson. Seven decided not to bring back
the series for Australian audiences.
Six-part ABC comedy ‘Aftertaste’,
starring Erik Thomson, will premiere on
the ABC next Wednesday, February 3 at
9pm. Thomson stars as a celebrity chef
who heads home to Adelaide after falling
from grace.
I watched plenty of shows during
the recent summer break, with two in
particular already in contention for a coveted
Chatter on the Box award later this
year. The first is new Stan drama series
‘Your Honor’, which stars the legendary
Bryan Cranston of ‘Breaking Bad’ fame.
And the other show I’m obsessed with is
‘Karate Kid’ revival ‘Cobra Kai’ on Netflix.
I watched all three seasons in less than a
week – that’s 30 episodes in five days!
At the movies...
An Aussie flick to be proud of
THE DRY

parra news » Tuesday, January 26, 2021
1 hour, 57 minutes
EMILY FESZCZUK
‘The Dry’ is a strongly written and
engrossing home-grown film to be
proud of.
Federal Agent Aaron Falk (Eric
Bana) finds himself back in his hometown
in country Victoria to attend
the funeral of his childhood friend,
who allegedly killed his family before
taking his own life.
He agrees to investigate the case
after he suspects that an unsolved
crime, which happened decades
earlier, may be connected but ends up
having to prove his own innocence.
Based on Jane Harper’s bestselling
novel, the movie has some differences
but is just as successful at gritty
storytelling even though it is a slow
burn at the start.
Once it warms up however, it will
have you feeling tense as you try to
navigate the twists and turns of this
crime thriller with each colourful
character adding another possible
piece to the puzzle.
Director Robert Connolly perfectly
captures the sparse and dusty landscapes
that hold plenty of secrets
from a community close to madness
because of relentless drought.
While Bana is physically quite
different from the lead described in
the book, he is a good fit. His engaging
performance elevates the story to be a
great addition to Australian cinema.
Eels hoping to learn from mistakes
NATHAN TAYLOR
After losing back to back games in the
NRL Finals last season, Parramatta
Eels skipper Clint Gutherson is hopeful
his team will learn from the heartache
of 2020 and come out the other side a much
better team.
Despite qualifying for last year’s Finals
Series in third position, the Eels bowed out in
straight sets with losses to eventual Premiers
Melbourne and South Sydney, extending their
Premiership drought by yet another year.
Speaking with the media at training last week,
Gutherson said Parramatta were in a strong
position to win both Finals games before their
opponents, on both occasions, were allowed
back into the contest.
“We gave it to Melbourne, had them where we
wanted them, and they ended up outclassing
us. And then up against Souths the following
week, we were up by a couple of tries and we
let them straight back into game and they took
it away from us in a matter of 10 minutes,” he
said.
“There’s a lot for us to improve on and, if that
doesn’t hurt you going out [of the Finals] like
that, then you’re playing footy for the wrong
reasons.
“A lot of the boys will be hungrier than ever
this season to try and rectify that.”
Parramatta started 2020 on fire, leading the
competition in the early part of the season
before slipping to third place when Penrith and
Melbourne went on extended winning runs.
Many long-suffering Eels fans were hopeful
2020 might have been the year the club would
finally break its 35-year title drought but, it
wasn’t to be, with injuries and bad luck late in
the season getting in the way.
“We hear that every single pre-season since
I’ve been here, this is my sixth year here now
and I’ve heard it from day one about ending the
title drought,” Gutherson said.
“Every team has gone though it and there’s no
excuse not to turn up to a major semi-final. You
don’t go into a game to lose, it’s how you handle
it and I think as a group we have to be better.
“If we want to win the comp or get one stage
further, we need to be better as a team, as a
squad and as a club. The best thing about footy
is, we get to go again this year.”
The Eels will continue pre-season training
this week before preparing for their first
trial game against Grand Finalists Penrith at
Panthers Stadium in late February.
The Eels will play four of their first five games
of the 2021 NRL season at home, Parramatta’s
Bankwest Stadium.
