PAT LAM’S NOTES
Pat Lam says the two-week enforced break in the
Gallagher Premiership season has been ‘a blessing
in disguise’ as the Bears gear up for Friday night’s
West Country derby at Ashton Gate.
The Bears are top of the table heading into the round seven
clash with their local rivals, but the Director of Rugby is
expecting a stern test from a Bath side ‘full of quality.’
“It’s a derby and there are some quality players in that Bath side,
and we know how dangerous they can be. We fully expect them
to be fired up and coming at us, but I think the two weeks hasn’t
been about Bath, the two weeks has been about us and about
where we can continue to climb that mountain.
“That’s been a big emphasis and we know that sure, we’re ahead
of the pack at the moment, but we’ve got to keep growing
ourselves, it’s always been about our improvement over these
four years, about how we get better.
“It was disappointing initially, not to play, but it’s actually been
a blessing in disguise. Not the fact that we haven’t played rugby
or have rested, it’s more about the quality of the work that we’ve
managed to get done in those two weeks.
“Some guys got their deserved rest, but the majority of the
squad, we all came in and we’ve worked pretty hard on our game
and done some work that maybe we’d normally reserve for
pre-season. So, with nine games non-stop, to be able to get the
conditioning, improve our game, spend some time culturally as
well, improve leadership, it’s been phenomenal for us, so now it’s
all about sharpening the axe as we go into games.”
Harry Randall last week became the fifth Bears player to receive
a call-up ahead of the Six Nations campaign, alongside Ben Earl,
Max Malins and Callum Sheedy – and Lam says the club is proud
of its international cohort.
“I’m very pleased for all of the international players. We’re very
proud of all of them and particularly Harry (Randall), as out third
Foundation Bears to gain international honours and I think I
read recently that Eddie (Jones) is looking to improve the game,
change it up, and that selection is a great selection.
“He’ll bring real energy and passion and pace to the game. He’s
a quality player and we’re all looking forward to seeing him put
the white jersey on and do well, and the same for Callum with
Wales.
“That will be a good game, it would be great if both are playing
when England play Wales – and again, Max and Ben, they are just
going from strength to strength as well, so we’re very proud of
them.”
jAKE WOOLMORE
preview
Jake Woolmore has challenged the Bears to build
on an impressive victory against Exeter Chiefs at
Sandy Park, when local rivals Bath visit Ashton Gate
on Friday for the round seven Gallagher Premiership
clash.
An enforced two-week break followed the 7-20 win in Devon
and Woolmore says that period has been used effectively in
preparation for the West Country derby.
“We used the two-week break productively, looked at our
weaknesses and areas we can improve, and put some really good
work in.
13
“It’s easy to come off the back of a big win and maybe get a bit
complacent, but we’ve used it to challenge ourselves.
“The lads really committed and worked hard over the two
weeks and we feel in a really good place ahead of the league
resumption.”
Woolmore says the Bears are expecting a physical showdown
in BS3 on Friday night, against a Bath side who were also losing
semi-finalists in last season’s competition.
“Bath are far better than their league position shows. They are
a big, physical outfit with some very talented players, and we
know the threats that they pose all across the pitch.
“In derby day fixtures, anything can happen, so we understand
the challenge that is in front of us and know we’ll need to be at
our best again on Friday night.
“It’s obviously a huge shame that this game will be played
without supporters, especially when you think about the sell-out
crowds it has attracted over the past few seasons, but we know
the fans will be supporting us from their homes and we’ll be
aiming to put a smile on their faces.”
Omar
Mouneimne
14
You would be hard pressed to find anyone who
speaks more passionately about rugby union
defence than Omar Mouneimne.
The South African arrived at the Bears as Defence and Collision
Coach in the summer of 2020, making the switch from Gallagher
Premiership rivals Worcester Warriors – and to good effect, as
last weekend’s bruising victory at Sandy Park so impressively
demonstrated.
In his mind, it’s a win topped only by October’s Challenge Cup
final, which saw the Bears withstand a 10-minute second-half
siege on their own line to lift the club’s first major European
silverware.
The well-travelled Mouneimne, who lists spells with the Sharks,
the Stormers, Italy, Stade Francais, Lyon and Edinburgh on his
CV, is thriving in the Bears environment under the leadership of
Director of Rugby, Pat Lam and keen to build on the success of
2020.
‘It’s been fantastic’
“I’m absolutely loving it at the Bears,” he said. “It’s a fantastic
environment, not only are the facilities world class, but being
involved with Pat and his approach to ball-in-hand rugby, being
fearless and having this approach where we want to play an
exciting brand of rugby and we’re not scared to take guys on, it’s
been fantastic.
“Especially coming from a South African kicking game and
defence perspective, it’s been great to have that exposure of
how you get that team on a page to play this exciting rugby and
be fearless.
“We’ve also got a great bunch of players here - they are really
studious, really focused and have a great work ethic. They really
are a pleasure to work with.
“The highlight, obviously, was winning the Challenge Cup and
that journey, beating Bordeaux and Toulon along the way. It
was a fantastic effort to get us there, and then also reaching a
Premiership semi-final, although it didn’t go our way. Those are
the two massive highlights.
“I was very proud of the defensive effort against Exeter. Of
course, though, that can’t be a one-off thing – I think consistency
and being able to deliver that week-on-week is key. But as
always, there are still things we can definitely improve on.
“But the key features of the performance, for me, were
managing their big ball carriers and their shape. So, I was proud
of the boys for recognising the shape in real-time and managing
the gain line, where they didn’t get run over and we dominated
that gain line, battered and stuck to the plan.”
Mouneimne’s belief that ‘defence is the yardstick by which
attack measures itself and evolves’ drives his whole coaching
philosophy and that, combined with a rich background in mixed
martial arts, completes a defence coach focused on ‘PIE’.
He explains: “P is for physical – are we functionally conditioned
for collisions, how is our tackle technique on single hits, double
hits, our defensive breakdown, ability to jackal, counter ruck and
so on.
“I is for intellectual, so all of the system-based stuff. Set-piece
defence rules, general defence rules, how we face all of the
default shapes, how we handle turnover attack, counterattack
and so on.
“E is for emotional. We spend a lot of time one-on-one with
players, aligning their goals and the reason they play with the
Bears goals and making sure they are always defending with
purpose and with focus.
“If we are not coming up with new ways to stress the attack, cut
off options, read plays in real time and take risks on defence,
then we’re not going anywhere. In the same way that the attack
looks for opportunities in defence and chinks in the armour.
BRISTOL BEARS VS BATH RUGBY | 2020/21

Clarity is key
“I like to look at defence as a case of ‘how do we attack and how
can we take away all of these options that they have and stop
them from playing the type of game they want to play, where is
the weakness and what is the risk.
“The key thing is, can we make the attack measure themselves
against us and worry about how they have to evolve to beat us.
“My key defensive principles are that I believe that rugby is a
gain line war, but you need to provide certainty to be able to
provide intensity with players. So, a lot of details around systems
and system clarity.”
The MMA themes that feature within Mouneimne’s coaching
derive from his knowledge and history in the sport but are
inspired by some negative experiences at school.
“The way that my martial arts background affected my rugby
was that I played rugby from a very young age, like you do in
South Africa at five-years-old, but I also did martial arts from
five-years-old.
“As I got older, unfortunately I was bullied a few times as some
people thought my name was a bit strange – in South Africa,
‘Omar’ means a lot of things, it can mean Grandma, it’s a type
of biscuit, a type of washing powder, so I was always being
harassed about my name, so my martial arts gave me the ability
to defend myself.
“But also, I started to find that my wrestling, my grappling and
just being fit for combat gave me an edge, even in my club and
school rugby teams - at the breakdown, in the collisions, I just
felt durable, like I wanted to go again, and I developed a hybrid
that I think works for rugby.”
It’s certainly working for the Bears, who sit top of the Gallagher
Premiership table after six rounds. But Mouneimne knows,
in a long and gruelling season, there are plenty of physical
encounters still to come - it’s his job to ensure they are ready for
them.
word from camp
31
What massive couple of weeks it has been, for a
multitude of reasons.
Overcoming a front row dilemma against Falcons, which enabled
the likes of George Kloska to showcase his talent and receive a
well-deserved man of the match - and then, we won twice on the
road. Most memorably against Chiefs at Sandy Park, which was
a true spectacle of physicality and hard work. Thus, winning all
three games post-Christmas has been a huge testament to how
far this group has come since returning to the Premiership in
2018.
With the European fixtures being cancelled, we suddenly found
ourselves with two weeks to lay the groundwork for our closest
and most infamous derby fixture. Winning against Bath twice last
year was an amazing achievement. However, underestimating
the challenge that presents itself would be costly. As a
result, the last two weeks have been great preparation for
the challenge ahead. Hopefully my fond memories of singing
blackbird on the pitch of the Rec after our last encounter can
rematerialize at Ashton Gate this Friday night.
What has stuck out most of all over this period of time has
been our ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Whether
it has been COVID restrictions interrupting our timetables and
training regime or cancelling games, we have found ways to
deal with these situations. A huge lesson from this past year
is how resilience and the capacity to adapt is vital to succeed
in competitive environments, especially when you have little
control on what’s happening outside of your environment. This
has been a key focus of ours for a while and driven from the top.
I cannot finish without mentioning the upcoming international
fixtures. Seeing new internationals getting called up for their
respective countries has been a huge pleasure. Watching
boys getting recognised for their hard work and skill has been
uplifting during these odd times. The sheer noise that erupted
from the squad when we found out that Harry Randall had been
called up to England for the Six Nations was jaw dropping. To see
a group of players, all of which have their own personal goals
and aspirations, react in such a pure sense of admiration and
happiness for another was brilliant.
As always, it’s great to see these boys do so well and I wish them
the best over the next couple of months.
academy news
32
Senior Academy Manager, Gethin
Watts has hailed the impact of
the club’s mentoring programme,
which provides young players
with support to enhance selfdevelopment
and growth, as
well as the platform to discuss a
range of subjects.
Devised by Director of Rugby, Pat Lam
and Watts, and led by John Afoa and Joe
Joyce, the programme helps to improve
communication, reinforce learning on
and off the field, develop leadership and
increase the confidence of the club’s
Senior Academy players.
“We started this programme 15 months
ago and the impact it has had has been
superb,” said Watts.
“It has helped to enhance our
environment in which everyone is
involved and has a real feeling of
responsibility and ownership.
“This is not just something for the
mentees, it’s been just as beneficial to
the mentors themselves. We want, as a
club, to make sure that we support the
ongoing learning of our experienced
players and develop their role as
mentors, we hold regular forums with
current and prospective mentors and
there is ongoing training and support for
them throughout the process.
“From myself, Pat (Lam) and Lindsey
Woodford (Mental Skills Coach), we are
ensuring the whole process is meaningful
for everyone involved.
“The mentors’ engagement throughout
has been excellent and the boys have
taken so much from the relationships
that have been built. It’s important to
emphasise that this is not just rugbyrelated
as our drive to develop better
people is at the heart of our culture.
“High Performance in sport as is
in business is very rarely achieved
without high quality leadership and the
mentoring programme plays a huge part
in developing and honing these skills.”
community foundation
Bears to deliver Project Rugby webinars.
First team players from Bristol Bears and Bristol Bears Women
have joined forces with the Community Foundation and
Premiership Rugby’s Project Rugby programme to deliver a
series of webinars to young people in the city.
Bears stars will cover topics such as ‘rugby and class’, ‘disability
and rugby’, ‘black players and rugby’ and ‘women in rugby’ with
young people on the club’s Project Rugby scheme.
Community Development Manager, Craig Capel, said: “Project
Rugby exists to provide increasing opportunities for young
people from disadvantaged communities, Black, Asian and Ethnic
Minority groups and disabled people to engage in rugby union
and has seen community colleagues work with over 4,000 young
players since 2017.
“European glory, Premiership play offs, five wins from the first
six this season, international quality across the squad - Bristol
is again now a rugby city with the players and staff contributing
positively to the vision of ‘inspiring a community through rugby
success.’
“There is little doubt in my mind that the club is helping the
Foundation to reach more people than ever before, even during
a global pandemic!
“I’m very excited about extending our reach further with
the launch of a series of live webinars that will explore the
experiences of our players across themes relevant to Project
Rugby.
“I hope hearing our players talking candidly about both positive
and negative experiences they have faced whilst forging a
career in our game will inspire even more to get involved and
enjoy all there is to enjoy about our magnificent game.”
