Shortage of
has charity
calling
for more
contributors
A CHARITY is concerned it
doesn’t have enough volunteers to
continue providing social services
to vulnerable communities across
the region.
Presbyterian Support South
Island is calling for more
volunteers for its Enliven
programme, which supports
older people to stay healthy and
connected.
The charity has supported
Cantabrians for more than a
century, which also supports
children and families through
its Family Works programme.
Presbyterian Support volunteer
co-ordinator Roni Jordan said
267 volunteers donated more than
18,000 hours of their time last
year.
While this was a significant
contribution, more is needed, she
said.
“It’s without doubt Cantabrians
are kind and caring which is
why they make such a significant
impact on the work we do to
support older people.’’
Online store next step for
specialist footwear shop
Just over a year since the doors first opened, The
Shoe Room in Upper Riccarton is about to launch a
new service for customers – an online store.
Owned by podiatrist Charlotte Russell, who
also owns and operates the podiatry clinic Feet
First, The Shoe Room was part of the clinic before
increasing demand for fashionable, functional
footwear prompted her to open the specialist shop
in December 2019.
“The online store is the next ‘big thing’ for us,
and it means that a much wider customer base
will have access to our extensive range,” Charlotte
says.
Customers logging on to the online store will find
photographs of the shoes taken from every angle
as well as information on the designs and materials
used to make them. A size guide on the website
shows how to measure feet, which Charlotte
encourages people to use so they can be sure of
ordering the right size.
The Shoe Room stocks a number of leading
international footwear brands, and the range has
recently been extended with the addition of the
popular Ziera brand. Also, in addition to Propét, the
store now stocks the Dr Comfort range of medical
footwear.
While The Shoe Room’s main focus is on
women’s footwear, the men’s range is also being
expanded, Charlotte says.
Business has grown steadily over the last 12
months, both through word of mouth and with
customers returning to purchase second and third
pairs of shoes, which Charlotte says is largely due
to the service her staff provides.
“That’s our point of difference. Shop manager
Maxine and shop assistant Carol are very friendly
and welcoming and are able to build a rapport with
customers by providing that all-important personal
service and making sure customers get shoes that
fit correctly, are comfortable and look nice on their
feet.”
The Shoe Room’s online store will go live in
February, a fitting complement to the physical
store, which is located at Unit 3, 355 Riccarton
Road, opposite the Lone Star.
Opening hours are Monday 10am-5.30pm,
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 9.30am-5.30pm,
Thursday 9.30am-5.30pm with late night Tuesday
by appointment only, Saturday 10am-4pm.
However, the online store will be open 24/7.
The Shoe Room looks forward to meeting all of
your footwear requirements.
New cycle route should improve safety
A MAJOR new cycleway that
will provide a safe cycling route
for people travelling through
Papanui, Bishopdale, Harewood
and the airport area will also
bring benefits for other road
users, the city council says.
Design plans for the Wheels to
Wings – Papanui ki Waiwhetū
cycleway, which will form part
of the network of 13 major cycleways
criss-crossing Christchurch
have been released this
week. Included in the cycleway
plans are a number of intersection
upgrades and roading layout
changes that should improve
safety for everyone, said city
council head of transport Richard
Osborne.
“On Harewood Rd, for example,
we are proposing to reduce
the four-lane section of the road
to two lanes to make space for
the cycleway while retaining onstreet
parking. This will encourage
lower speeds and make the
road safer for turning drivers and
pedestrians to cross,” he said.
“We will be installing traffic
lights at the Harewood, Gardiners
and Breens intersection and
partially signalising the Bishopdale
roundabout. Traffic lights
are planned for the Harewood
Rd and Woolridge Rd intersection,
and the Greers Rd and
BENEFITS: The Wheels to Wings – Papanui ki Waiwhetū
cycleway also includes upgrades to roading layout which
will improve safety.
Harewood Rd intersection will
also be upgraded,’’ Osborne said.
Other proposed roading layout
changes include:
• Turning Wilmot St at
Harewood Rd into a cul-de-sac.
• Making Sails St exit only
onto Harewood Rd.
• Making Chapel St entry only
from Harewood Rd.
• Installing a new signalised
crossing outside Harewood Primary
School and extending the
school speed zone.
“We have tried to minimise
the removal of on-street parking,
however, the competing
demands for road space means
that some on-street parking will
be removed along the route,’’
Osborne said.
“In those areas where there
is high parking demand we are
proposing to put in time-restricted
parking to help ensure that
convenient parking is available
About the Wheels to Wings cycleway
It will provide a
connection for local
cycling trips in the
Harewood, Bishopdale,
and Papanui suburbs
to destinations
including schools,
shops, businesses and
recreational facilities.
It will also connect to
cycling facilities further
afield.
At its western end,
the cycleway will
connect with the
Johns Rd cycle and
pedestrian underpass,
for people.’’
Twenty-one trees will also
need to be removed along the
route of the cycleway, but the
city council is proposing to plant
a total of 56 new trees. It is also
proposing to upgrade the street
lighting along the route to make
the cycleway safer and more
comfortable to user after dark.
“Our monitoring of cycling
numbers across the city show
that more people are opting to
travel by bike so we are keen
to get the Wheels to Wings
linking through to
the commercial areas
surrounding the
airport, and to McLeans
Island Rd via the Johns
Rd shared path. This
will be a connection
route for the roughly
7000 people who work
in the airport area.
At its eastern end,
Wheels to Wings
connects directly to
the Northern Line
cycleway and the
planned Nor’West Arc
cycleway.
cycleway route finalised and
construction underway so that
we extend our cycleway network
and link up more parts of the
city,’’ Osborne said.
Public feedback is currently
being sought on the plans for
the Wheels to Wings cycleway.
People can share their views
between now and February 22.
The city council will consider
the submissions and finalise
the route later this year, ahead
of construction starting in the
middle of the year.
A range of roles needed to be
filled. Mini-van drivers and assistants
were required to help transport
people to day programmes,
serve meals and refreshments,
and to join in on activities at the
programmes themselves.
Said Jordan: “Our volunteers
are wonderful people who form
part of the Presbyterian Support
‘family’ and they are incredibly
generous in giving their time
and effort to helping our Enliven
members.
“So I would encourage anyone
who has a little spare time to
contact us about becoming a
volunteer.”
Enliven ensures all older New
Zealanders have access to community-based
support, activities
to join in with, and safe, healthy
independence at home.
As well as delivering its own
services, Family Works also
delivered programmes on
behalf of the Ministry of Social
Development and the Ministry of
Justice to ensure children felt safer
‘Sometimes they yell abuse or flip the bird’
• From page 1
Loffhagen has always wanted
to do her bit to support the community.
Since joining, she never
looked back.
Over time she has responded
to a wide range of concerns. It
could be rogue shopping trollies,
supporting people who were lost,
jump-starting cars, or letting
residents know their garage door
or car boot was “wide open.”
“Back in the day when there
was rugby at Lancaster Park,
there were at least 60 cars that got
damaged. But with three different
patrols going up and down
the street each night, we got that
down to zero,” she said.
“During the earthquakes, we
went over to New Brighton every
day with other patrols to deliver
non-perishable food.”
Issues, like burglaries, remained
largely the same now
compared to when she first
started, but noted people opportunists
were “a lot more brazen,”
like breaking into houses while
people were home.
Having a presence in communities
was often a deterrent
to unlawful behaviour, even if
offenders could not be seen.
“We go to known problem
areas and act as a deterrent. We
sometimes don’t see them but
they see us and disappear,” she
said.
PRESENCE: The Hornby Community Patrol works with
the police and community, Ann Smith (right) is the longserving
secretary of the organisation.
“Every week we patrol around
the hospital as nurses walk back
to their cars. These nurses were
walking to dark car parks so they
were very appreciative of that.”
Keeping a watchful eye over
anti-social behaviour did not
always attract the best attention,
but it was not enough to deter her
from the important task at hand.
“One time we had a rock
thrown at the car. Sometimes
they yell abuse or flip the bird –
but that’s expected.”
The job definitely came with its
challenges, like having the ability
to “read” people and determining
whether their demeanour warranted
suspicion.
Said Loffhagen: “I’m a great
believer in gut instinct, if something’s
not right, 99 per cent of
the time you’re onto it. I’m quite
lucky, I’ve always been able to
quickly pick up on something.”
The patrol, formerly Community
Watch Hornby, established
in 1994 following a desire by the
community to address increasing
petty crime in Hornby, Prebbleton,
Wigram, Halswell and
Templeton.
It works closely with police,
exchanging knowledge on areas
of concern and contributing
towards efforts to apprehend offenders.
It was a stepping stone for budding
police officers before they
went to the Royal New Zealand
Police College, to get a taste
of how to observe, report and
patrol.
Patrolling neighbourhoods was
only the tip of the iceberg.
A lot of work went into it
behind the scenes, Loffhagen
said, such as writing reports,
sending relevant information
to the police, visiting residents
with concerns and pinning down
funding.
She dedicated 30 hours a
month – including two patrols –
checking over reports, writing up
rosters, maintaining the patrol
car and contacting appropriate
authorities with concerns, such as
schools.
“The hours we put in is phenomenal,
and so many of it is
behind the scenes.”
Loffhagen has called Hornby
home for more than 40 years, but
she was born in Ashburton.
Retiring from her medical
receptionist job for 23 years in
2019 at Village Health Medical
Centre means she dedicated more
time to other passion projects
such as gardening and crossstitch.

KIWIBANK LOCAL HERO AWARDS
Work with music therapy earns Wade medal
• By Ella Somers
KIMBERLEY WADE, founder
and director of Southern Music
Therapy, thought it was a hoax
when she found out she had
been made a Kiwibank Local
Hero medallist for her work as
a registered neurologic music
therapist.
However, she said it was “really
lovely to be valued by someone
other than my husband and my
mum. Someone investigated
and appreciated what I’ve done
and thought it was cool, so that’s
pretty special.”
Wade grew up in Hawkes
Bay in a musical family and
studied psychology and classical
singing at Victoria University.
She considered becoming a
clinical psychologist but
“wanted to add the music in
there somewhere.”
After meeting a music therapist
and learning about music therapy,
Wade realised it was a career she
wanted to pursue. She auditioned
and got into Victoria University’s
master of music therapy
programme and, after graduating,
moved to Christchurch.
Wade describes musical therapy
as a tool to help with a nonmusical
goal, like finger dexterity
or helping with emotional
expression.
“We’re also working on
communication, physical
it’s a non-verbal way of
communicating with people. It
Wade has more than14 years
big neurological facilities in
Christchurch such as Equitas, St
John of God, Laura Fergusson
and Burwood Hospital.
As well as setting up the
organisation, Wade co-founded
the Cantabrainer Choir Trust
with Therapy Professionals in
February 2012 which is now run
by the trust.
The choir is for people with
neurological conditions. Wade
said she is really proud of what it’s
done for so many people.
“There was a real gap for people
with neurological conditions
who couldn’t afford private music
therapy.
“It’s a fabulous community
space for people to come together
and be able to do rehabilitation
without it being super expensive.”
A lot of Wade’s clients,
especially her stroke clients, are
not covered by ACC which means
they have to pay privately for
music therapy.
“There’s never enough funding
in the neurologic area and there’s
never enough understanding of
what musical therapy can offer,”
Wade said.
“I do have clients who sacrifice
parts of their lifestyle in order to
pay for the therapy because it’s so
highly valued in their world.”
It’s only after years of education
and advocacy of music therapy
that Wade feels more people are
aware that music therapy is out
there. Ideally, she wants people
to know that music therapy is an
option just like speech therapy or
physiotherapy and to make sure
it’s available to people if they need
it.
“In the last couple of years
music therapy is becoming more
recognised and more valued,” she
said.
“It’s definitely growing and
keeping it as a quality service is
very important.”
• Abdul Aziz Wahabzadah
Abdul Aziz Wahabzadah has
been hailed as a hero by law
enforcement, politicians and the
public for his actions on March
15, 2019, when he risked his
life to chase down the terrorist
behind the Christchurch
mosque attacks. Wahabzadah
was worshipping at Linwood
Mosque when the killer entered
the mosque and opened fire. In
spite of the clear risk to his own
life, he chased the offender from
the room, while grabbing an
Abdul Aziz Wahabzadah
Eftpos machine to hurl at him.
Wahabzadah’s quick thinking
and bravery saved many lives
and helped law enforcement to
quickly identify the killer’s car
and capture him.
a hard time was the motivation
provides care packages to
Mobility
Key to good health and wellbeing
The ability to move around freely is
essential for everyday life but as we age
our mobility and flexibility can slowly
decrease making it difficult for older
adults to perform the same common
activities as they have been used to, like
walking, bending, sitting and standing.
What can be done to delay this reduction
in mobility? Or even reverse some of the
loss as we age? Physical activity is the key,
‘move it or lose it’.
“Our fitness centre focuses on classes
and activities to benefit all ages of adult
health and fitness, but twice a week
we focus on the older adults. Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 10:00-10:45, they
offer an Older Adults Fitness Class with
their fabulous trainer Leanne. We often
receive feedback on how much attendees
appreciate the class and opportunity to
meet new people of similar minds,” says
Heather Peterson.
She is the current owner of Culture Fitness
Wigram having bought it in September
2020, as a compliment to her other
services. Twenty-three years ago, she
founded the ‘Florence Nightingale
Group’, the largest privately owned
home and community service
agency in Christchurch.
‘Putting heart into community care’
has always been at the forefront of
services offered under the Florence
Nightingale Group. The Group
is involved in many home and
community services including home
support, community nursing, flexible
disability hosting and servicing
as well as companion driving.
Progression and innovation with
an eye for filling those holes in
the welfare of the Christchurch
community especially to those
who are unable to support
themselves. Every day Heather
see’s first-hand how important
it is to be as independent as you
can.
Her movement into the world
of gyms was done as she saw a
need for a place where adults, both young
and old could go and become the best
they can be. Culture Fitness strives to be
a ‘different’ gym.
The environment feels welcoming with a
sense of community and belonging. The
mission is to support the health journey
through education, encouragement, and
hold-handing if necessary.
“As we grow older, our bodies change.
Injuries take longer to heal. Mental health
can become overwhelming, this is why
Culture Fitness Wigram is here. To be the
healthy heart of the individual and the
community. I get such joy out of seeing
people of the older demographic out
moving and finding purpose and smiling
and enjoying their days.” Heather says
with a wide smile.
