Mounta<strong>in</strong> of Support for Charity .......................... For many, cop<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>and</strong> recover<strong>in</strong>g from domestic abuse could be likened to climb<strong>in</strong>g a mounta<strong>in</strong>. How fitt<strong>in</strong>g, then, that one local man decided to do just that! Paul Wright scaled Mount Snowdon to not only raise awareness about domestic abuse but also to raise funds for New Era, the domestic abuse service for Staffordshire <strong>and</strong> Stoke-on-Trent that helped a close friend turn her life around. As well as challeng<strong>in</strong>g weather conditions, Paul had to overcome his fear of heights when he tackled the 3,560-feet peak. Paul, aged 39, who is Lichfield born <strong>and</strong> bred, is chairman of Lichfield Social Community Football Club <strong>and</strong> was jo<strong>in</strong>ed by 17 friends, all of whom had to conform to the social distanc<strong>in</strong>g measures that were <strong>in</strong> place at that time. Due to the restrictions placed on our everyday lives caused by the Covid-19 p<strong>and</strong>emic, we are all experienc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased levels of stress <strong>and</strong> anxiety. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> summer months there are greater opportunities to spend time outdoors, but dur<strong>in</strong>g the autumn <strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter, when the days are short, our time spent outdoors is much reduced, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g our chances of suffer<strong>in</strong>g from anxiety <strong>and</strong> stress. No matter what time of year, spend<strong>in</strong>g time surrounded by nature <strong>and</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>dful of the natural world around us can make you feel calmer <strong>and</strong> more relaxed. Tak<strong>in</strong>g a walk <strong>in</strong> your local park, along a quiet country lane, immers<strong>in</strong>g yourself <strong>in</strong> nature at a nature reserve or <strong>in</strong> an ancient woodl<strong>and</strong> provides us with an opportunity to relax <strong>and</strong> breath. Us<strong>in</strong>g our senses to touch, smell, see <strong>and</strong> hear nature is extremely beneficial to our mental wellbe<strong>in</strong>g. Transform<strong>in</strong>g the Trent Valley is launch<strong>in</strong>g its Connect<strong>in</strong>g with Nature project <strong>in</strong> <strong>2021</strong>, offer<strong>in</strong>g people the opportunity to connect with nature to improve their mental wellbe<strong>in</strong>g. Participants will beg<strong>in</strong> to underst<strong>and</strong> the river, wetl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> heritage of the Trent Valley through a programme us<strong>in</strong>g ‘forest school’ type methods, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g community garden<strong>in</strong>g, guided walks <strong>and</strong> bushcraft activities.
