In this issue...
Well, just when we thought that life had calmed down after Brexit, the world changes
again and we are in lockdown with a global pandemic on our hands.
It’s good to see the finishing industry stepping up and providing assistance with
manufacturing for ventilator and other equipment for hospitals.
In this issue we have a piece from our legal team on the do and don’ts of furloughing
employees plus news of some new projects throughout the UK.
It will be interesting to see in the coming months how industry will come out of this
lockdown period and how long it will take UK manufacturing to get back on its feet.
There are clearly hard times ahead and we can only hope that the Government
continues to support industry and that banks release funds to let
the UK prosper again.
Middle Eastern takeover
One of the leading manufacturing groups in the Middle East has
completed its single largest investment in the UK with its acquisition of
a historic producer of paint and powder coatings.
The family-run Sheibani Group, which employs more than 2,000
people globally, has added the century-old Thomas Howse Ltd to its
growing portfolio of UK businesses.
Based in the Black Country at Rowley Regis, near Birmingham, UK,
Thomas Howse was established in 1903 and manufactures a diverse
range of decorative, industrial and specialist coatings.
It has a developing specialism in products that are 100% solventfree,
designed to reduce carbon footprint and deliver a safer work
environment.
The deal sees Thomas Howse joining another UK-based coatings
company in the Sheibani Group, T&R Williamson, and pooling 362
years of industry expertise.
“We are proud to welcome a manufacturer of the calibre of Thomas
Howse, and all its skilled team, to our family of 20 successful Sheibani
Group companies in the UK and overseas,” said group vice chairman
and managing director, Abubaker Sheibani.
Sunset date on the horizon
According to Fraser
Technologies if you are still
using nPB you should be aware
of the sunset date of the 4th of
July. As yet it is not known how
long the current restrictions will
apply and how this will affect
current users to comply with the
legislation.
The company says it is still
operating as 'business as usual'
all be it from our own homes,
and is still able to supply its
existing and new customers with
chemicals, offer advice on
different cleaning applications
and conduct chemical
evaluations where necessary.
Market set to grow
The electroplating market is estimated to witness a CAGR of 2.91%
over the forecast period to reach US$15.513 billion in 2025, increasing
from US$13.052 billion in 2019.
Electroplating is considered one of the most common methods used
for corrosion protection, on bridges, vehicles and appliances among
others, as the metal coating acts as a sacrificial barrier that helps
prevent the corrosion on the underlying substrate. The growing
adoption of electroplating in the automotive industry by the
manufacturers for coating the body of the vehicle with rust-proof and
non-corrosive materials coupled with a significant surge in the
automotive industry at the global level is also anticipated to bolster the
market growth opportunities during the coming years.
The electrical and electronics industry is expected to hold a decent
share in the global market as electroplating is considered as one of the
most important processes for the manufacturing of electronic
components so as to enhance electrical conductivity, improve corrosion
resistance and increasing the solderability of the component. Thus, the
growing electronics industry in the major emerging economies such as
India, China and Brazil is anticipated to boost production.
Milton Keynes move
The Surface Treatment global
business unit of BASF’s Coatings
division, operating under the
Chemetall brand, has moved to
a new facility in Milton Keynes,
UK.
Christophe Cazabeau, senior
vice president surface treatment
of BASF, officially opened the
new Chemetall Limited office
and laboratory facility at the
Napier House, during a ribbon
cutting ceremony.
Napier House, the new home
of Chemetall Limited, has been
redesigned and reflects BASF’s
office interiors. The main floor
exhibits an open floor design
enabling teams across other
departments to engage, and
cultivate an environment
conducive to collaboration.
In particular, the new “break
out area” is an ideal space for
employees to come together for
meetings, refreshments, and
company events. The facility is
also inclusive of conference
rooms dedicated for
departmental meetings.
“The workspace was designed
to meet modern work
practices.The fully optimized
office layout will help increase
productivity and efficiency,”
explains Jason Bird, Chemetall
quality manager, who led the
office transition project.
The newly designed
laboratory located on the
ground floor offers: dye
penetrant testing, a “wet lab” to
process and test customer’s
products and panels, salt spray
cabinets, and a powder coating
room. The laboratory includes
new testing equipments to meet
customer demands and cater to
current and future testing
requirements. The SEM room is
now open for customers to view
images of the sample surfaces
treated with Chemetall’ s pretreatment
product portfolio.
There is a shortage of stock across Europe of some chemical
products
Committed to training
Indestructible Paint has
reinforced its commitment to
providing comprehensive
product and application training
to its customers. The
Birmingham-based
manufacturer of performance
paints and coatings is drawing
attention to the benefits
customers can gain once current
interruptions to the
manufacturing processes have
ended.
“Obviously, manufacturing
operations are being impacted
by the current global issue but
we anticipate that when resolved
and production begins to
escalate again, the demand for
our products and, therefore
support training, will grow very
rapidly,” says Graham
Armstrong, customer training
manager at Indestructible Paint.
“That is why we remain very
receptive to helping all our
customers plan both short term
and future training needs to
ensure that staff are fully skilled
for the manufacturing upturn.”
Staying operational
SIFCO is staying operational to
support key industries with their
vital maintenance, repair and
overhaul (MRO) projects.
The steadily increasing impact
of the COVID-19 virus is
creating an unprecedented
situation across the world. To
help tackle the pandemic and
keep crucial sectors like power
generation, oil and gas,
aerospace, military and marine
on-line, SIFCO ASC’s sites
remain open under social
distancing guidelines.
SIFCO ASC’s teams around
the world are closely monitoring
the situation and following
governmental advice on
medical, social, and commercial
matters to best protect all those
that they work with. Only key
maintenance engineers and
selective plating technicians are
on-site at SIFCO ASC’s
locations in the US, UK, France
and Sweden, while all noncritical
office staff are working
remotely.
Chic Allen, general manager
at SIFCO ASC, said “We know
that the COVID-19 situation is
causing a lot of uncertainty for
people and businesses across
the world. At this time, we want
to make sure that we can ease
this anxiety and provide the
support where needed.
“By remaining operational, we
are still able to take on repair
projects at our sites, and we are
shipping our solutions to trades
across the world so that crucial
repairs can be done. For
industries like power
generation, this is critical, as
otherwise generators risk
unexpected failures if not
maintained, which can then go
on to affect electricity supplies.”
Printing ink manufacturers across Europe are reporting reduced
availability of ethanol and n-propanol. These are key inputs into the
production of printed packaging inks and other materials, like
varnishes, which, in turn, are vital in the production of consumer
product packaging. The use of these inks and packaging materials
helps ensure food and pharmaceutical products, among others,
reach the consumer in the best and most useable condition: they
allow the packaging to inform consumers about a product’s
contents, how they should be used and, critically, maximise product
condition and shelf life.
The UK printing industry supply chain are calling upon the UK
Government to ensure the necessary supplies of ethanol, n-propanol
and other relevant raw materials are maintained for the ink and
printing industries so they can fulfil their role in producing food and
other essential packaging throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As
things stand, members are reporting that things will come to a head
within a matter of weeks, not least because of increased demand for
food and other products, and hence increased packaging demand.
Availability issues are arising because ethanol, along with other
industrial alcohol solvents like n-propanol, is also used in the
production of disinfectants and sanitary products such as hand gels.
With the obvious increased demands for sanitary, medical, and
pharmaceutical products as a response to COVID-19, resources are
increasingly being diverted into this area, at the expense of other
sectors and products. There are even concerns some countries are
considering introducing a restriction of ethanol, limiting supplies
exclusively for health/pharmaceutical purposes.
A robust response to COVID-19 is understandable but if
allocation of resources is diverted entirely in the health/sanitary
product direction, there will inevitably be knock-on effects
elsewhere, including on vital printed packaging for food and
pharmaceutical products.
Tom Bowtell, CEO of the British Coatings Federation said: “In the
past few days, BCF members have reported that prices for ethanol
and n-propanol have risen by up to 350% since last week, adding
thousands of pounds a week in additional material costs. There are
greater concerns that supplies will dry up completely in future. BCF
has already been in touch with officials at BEIS to make them aware
of members’ concerns and how these shortages of supply may
affect the availability of food packaging and packaging in other
critical areas, like pharmaceutical products”
Ventilator support
Rileys Surface World has supported the VentilatorChallengeUK
Consortium with the delivery of two machines critical to the
manufacture of ventilators for the fight against Covid-19.
Rolls Royce PLC and GKN Aerospace each have a Kerry Microsolve
250M Ultrasonic Cleaning Machine delivered to their design &
manufacturing plants in Filton (Bristol, UK) and Cowes (Isle of Wight,
UK), supplied by Riley Surface World.
The machines use ultrasonic frequencies to clean parts to a very
high specification, essential to parts used in the manufacture of
ventilators for medical use.
Message to members
In a message to members of the
Chemical Business Association,
its chairman, Darren Budd,
commercial director, BTC-
Europe, has said that the
challenges faced by the industry
– Covid-19 and Brexit –
amounted to a ‘perfect storm’
for many companies.
He said, “We have the
immediate reality of the Covid-
19 pandemic and waiting in the
wings we have the prospect of
further Brexit uncertainties.”
The CBA chairman’s message
replaces his speech to the
Association’s Annual Lunch,
which attracts some 1,300
members and their guests, and
was scheduled to take place on
29 April but has been cancelled
because of the Covid-19 lockdown.
“CBA has continued to call for
an end to uncertainty and, like
most of UK business, close
regulatory alignment and
continuing frictionless trade with
the European Union. Our
advocacy campaign will continue
to secure market access and
frictionless trade with the EU –
the destination for 60% of the
UK’s chemical exports and the
source of 70% of the UK’s
chemical imports.”
“But the UK Government has
made it clear that it has no
intention of even attempting to
achieve regulatory alignment
with the European Union as far
as chemicals are concerned.
“CBA is therefore now
advising member companies
trading with the EU to pursue
the following options – before
the end of the transition period
– in order to secure EU market
access.”
• Either use an existing
subsidiary or create a new one
in the EU and transfer any EU
REACH registrations to that
subsidiary.
• Establish a partnership with a
company in the EU and transfer
any EU REACH registrations to
that company.
• Support CBA’s plan to create
or contract with a collective Only
Representative entity in the EU
for member companies – the
CBA office can provide further
details of this option.
10 LEGAL MATTERS
Furlough in practice
The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme is
designed to help businesses that would
otherwise be forced to lay off staff in the
face of the unprecedented disruption caused
by COVID-19.
All businesses with a PAYE scheme in place
on 28 February 2020, regardless of size or
sector, will be able to benefit from the scheme
with the government reimbursing employers
up to 80% of their employees’ wages, to a
maximum of £2,500 per month, plus
employer’s NICs and auto-enrolment pension
contributions.
Employees on agency contracts and flexible
or zero hours contracts can also benefit from
the scheme. In addition, the scheme also
covers employees who were made redundant
since 28 February 2020, if they are rehired by
their employer.
Furloughed workers: what does
that mean?
Businesses have to ‘designate affected
employees as furloughed workers and notify
your employees of this change’. However,
employers still have to heed employment law
which means that, having designated those
employees whose jobs were at risk, they will
need to agree with those employees that they
will be ‘furloughed’.
Given the extraordinary situation prevailing
at the moment and given the alternative to
being furloughed, it is likely that most
employees will agree to the terms.
For those workers who do not agree, they
will either have to take unpaid leave for an
indeterminate period or employers are likely
to have to go down the redundancy route. It
should be noted that furloughed workers are
designated by the employer – an employee
cannot ‘self-designate’.
Eligibility
Employees hired on or after 1 March 2020
are excluded from the scheme, presumably to
stop people ‘gaming’ the system by hiring
family members after the scheme was
announced and then furloughing them.
However, those businesses that have made
people redundant since 28 February 2020, can
re-employ them and then furlough them. To
qualify for payment under the Job Retention
Scheme, an employee must be furloughed for
a minimum of three weeks in order to prevent
employers putting staff on a furlough ‘rota’ i.e.,
one week on furlough, one week off.
Who can be furloughed?
Normal employment law still applies so
employers must not discriminate when
deciding who to furlough. Employees
returning to work after a period of sickness
absence, or self-isolation, can be furloughed,
however they cannot be furloughed whilst
they remain on a period of sickness absence
or self-isolation.
Furlough will only take effect when this
period comes to an end. Employees who are
“shielding” however, will be eligible to be
furloughed. Employees on maternity leave can
be furloughed if they agree to return to work
early or change to shared parental leave,
alternatively they will remain on Statutory
Maternity Pay where this is applicable and will
not be furloughed until their return.
When agreeing changes and moving to
furlough status, it is important to remember
that normal employment law processes apply.
Employers must be careful not to discriminate
against any employees when deciding who to
offer furlough to.
Furloughed workers remain
employed but must not work
Assuming the designated employee has
agreed to be furloughed, they cannot
undertake any work for their employer at all.
If the employee continues to work, even
reduced hours, they are not eligible for the
scheme. The good news for furloughed staff is
that they can volunteer or undertake training
providing neither activity generates income for
their employer. Whether or not people can
take advantage of this while confined to their
house is, of course, another matter altogether.
How it will work?
While furloughed, the government will pay
Finishing - May/June 2020

LEGAL MATTERS 11
related employment costs including pension
contributions and NICs (but not commission
or bonuses) in addition to wages. All
furloughed workers will remain employed by
their employer for the duration of the
scheme.
Employers can make up the missing 20%
of their employees’ salaries but that is their
choice (or ability to pay). There is no legal
obligation for the employers to top up the
salary to 100%, but any contractual clauses
regarding withholding pay and deductions
should be taken into account when this
decision is being made.
For those employees who are furloughed,
their employment status will change but their
employment record remains continuous.
Employers need to give HMRC a list of
furloughed employees. Employers pay their
workers as usual, via PAYE, and then apply
for funding, every three weeks (not weekly)
to cover 80% of their wages (up to £2,500
of gross pay).
You will receive a grant from HMRC to
cover the lower of 80% of an employee’s
regular wage or £2,500 per month, plus the
associated Employer NICs and minimum
automatic enrolment employer pension
contributions on that subsidised wage. Fees,
commission and bonuses should not be
included.
For workers whose pay varies, the 80% is
based on the higher of:
• the earnings in the same pay period in
the previous year; or
• the average earnings in the previous 12
months (or less, if they've worked for less).
If employees paid the minimum wage are
furloughed, the fact that 80% of their
earnings will bring their wages below the
NMW does not contravene the legislation as
people are only entitled to the NMW if they
are working. They can, however, claim the
NMW if undertaking training.
The HMRC system through which
payments can be made should be up and
running by the end of April. The scheme is
expected to run for three months, subject to
review.

12 POWDER COATING
Graffiti proof coating
At a time when social distancing and
community lockdowns are the norm for
nearly everyone, we are truly
appreciating the value of our external
environments more than ever before. So, it is
vital those environments offer us comfort and
peace of mind. Urban design is about
creating the theatre of life, which transcends
the space itself. It creates a sense of order and
continuity in our outdoor living environments,
but most importantly it promotes a richness of
experience and belonging to the people who
occupy these spaces.
Outdoor seating is a cornerstone of that
experience, whether it be a park bench where
friends catch up on a sunny day, a railway
station seat bringing strangers together until
their train arrives, or stadium seats where fans
experience the rollercoaster of emotions that
surge through the crowd. Outdoor seating
has the power to bring people together and is
integral to a healthy community life, yet, it is
extremely vulnerable to corrosion as a result
of the elements and of human influences.
“Acid rain corrodes metal and causes paint
and stone to deteriorate more quickly,” says
Rastislav Blahut, Axalta’s global business
manager for its Thermoplastics business.
“High temperature variations can cause
increased stress on the core structure of
outdoor furniture as it expands and contracts
with rising and falling temperatures.
Condensation, air pollution and road salt will
all also leave their mark on outdoor furniture.”
Corrosion levels will greatly depend on the
outdoor seating’s location. Sun, salt, wind and
humidity can aggressively attack the metal of
seafront benches, while the lower parts of
park benches are susceptible to dog fouling.
Stadium seats often bear the brunt of
spectators’ repeated use. Add to that the risk
of hidden corrosion to submerged parts below
ground as a result of high levels of acid or
alkaline in the soil and it’s clear that outdoor
seating has a lot to contend with.
Whatever the cause, once corrosion starts, it
is virtually impossible to stop. Damaged
seating might need to be repaired or replaced
altogether. This pushes up overall maintenance
costs for cities, local authorities and venues.
Inaction can leave unsightly seating in place
that does the opposite of bringing
communities together by inviting antisocial
behaviour and encouraging vandalism.
Rather than accept the inevitable,
technologies exist to stop the deterioration of
metal from happening in the first place. To
combat corrosion, Axalta offers Plascoat PPA
571, one of the most versatile and durable
coatings available on the market today.
Plascoat PPA 571 is a thermoplastic powder
coating technology designed to provide longterm
corrosion protection for metal against the
most demanding environments, adverse
weather conditions, salt spray and sun
exposure. It provides a long lasting, tough
coating for exterior applications to mild steel,
galvanised steel and aluminium.
“A major advantage of thermoplastic
powder coatings is that they will not crack,
chip, flake or fracture,” says Blahut. “Because
they have no micro-porosity, water or air
cannot initiate the corrosion process. Its
smooth surface makes it impermeable to
graffiti paints and adhesives for fly-posters,
both of which can be easily wiped off with just
a cloth and a small amount of solvent or with
standard water-based graffiti removal products.
These features combined makes Plascoat PPA
571 ideal for outdoor furniture that is exposed
to demanding urban or coastal environments.”
Seaside protection
The tiny island of La Réunion in the
Southern Indian Ocean is a surfer’s paradise.
However, the tropical climate means that
seaside outdoor furniture needs a world-class
coating to protect it from severe conditions.
Lamp posts and flag masts along the sea front
of St Leu, the village that hosted the 1999
“Rip Curl” World Cup, were refurbished with
Plascoat PPA 571 ahead of the event. The high
gloss finish didn’t just make the esplanade
look immaculate, it also provided little to no
anchor for the growth of algae or fungus that
is common in these environments. The coating
still looks pristine today.
Stadium seating
A wide range of international stadiums
around the world have also benefited from the
exterior weathering capabilities and durability
of Plascoat PPA 571 when constructing and
refurbishing their seating.
Thermoplastic powder coatings can be
applied in a variety of ways, but the
electrostatic spray method has proven a major
success with manufacturers of metal stadium
seating where a long-lasting durable finish is
required. Extensive lab tests and real-world
use indicate a working life of over 70 years
with the coated material – whether it’s steel,
iron or aluminium – retaining a premium
quality, glossy appearance. Because Axalta also
offers bespoke colours on its thermoplastic
powder coatings, sports clubs can make sure
to kit out their arenas in club colours, which
only adds to the ambiance on match days.
Plascoat PPA 571 is one of only a few
commercially available coatings that are warmto-the-touch,
a feature that is crucial to the
purpose of outdoor seating. “Warm to the
touch doesn’t mean a heated seat,” adds
Blahut. “Instead, the thermoplastic has low
thermal conductivity so that heat is not
conducted away from whichever part of the
body is in contact with the material. This
makes it a perfect choice for outdoor and
stadium seating in colder climates.”
Long-term, cost-effectiveness
When considering a coating for outdoor
furniture, whole life costs should be as
important a consideration as the upfront costs.
Thermoplastic coatings have significant
advantages over alternatives coatings, such as
polyester, polyamide and PVC.
For example, in 1996 Axalta’s Plascoat PPA
571 was used to re-coat ornamental fences in
Sutton Beach, a seaside park in Brisbane,
Australia. The fences had originally been
coated in polyester, which had started to rust
after just six months of exposure to the
Australian seaside elements.
“What is interesting is that some of the
polyester fences across the road and further
from the sea, were not replaced at the time
due to their slightly better condition,” says
Blahut. “20 years later the polyester fences
have degraded both functionally and
cosmetically despite being less affected by sea
salt in the air. In stark contrast, the furniture
that was re-coated in Plascoat PPA 571 is still
in excellent functional condition with the same
premium quality, glossy appearance two
decades later.”
As thermoplastic powder coatings are
virtually maintenance-free over their entire
lifetime, Brisbane’s local public authority –
responsible for the upkeep of the fences –
benefitted from exceptionally low whole-life
costs and has been able to provide a wellmaintained
and attractive street environment.
Axalta is committed to providing innovative,
colourful and sustainable solutions. Its range of
thermoplastic powder coatings are specifically
designed to prevent corrosion and Plascoat
PPA 571 is the ideal coating for outdoor items,
which are subjected to harsh and demanding
environments.
Blahut concludes, “We are currently going
through challenging times, but it hopefully
won’t be long before people come back
together and community life is played out
once again on outdoor furniture coated with
Plascoat PPA 571.”
20 MEASUREMENT
The right profile
One of the main factors affecting the
performance of a coating system,
primarily on steel, is surface profile.
In the industrial and protective coatings
industry, metal surfaces are blasted not only
to remove mill scale, corrosion or previous
coatings, but to generate a surface profile. In
some industries a surface profile is achieved
through chemical etching or mechanical
abrasion. But regardless of the method, the
surface profile increases the surface area of
the metal - and it is this increased surface area
which provides a better key for the coating to
adhere to.
Surface profile should not be
confused with roughness
Whilst ‘profile’ and ‘roughness’ are often
interchangeable terms used when describing
the surface of a metal, in the coatings industry
the term ‘surface profile’ is the measurement
of the peak-to-valley height. This is often
expressed as an average of multiple individual
readings and typically ranges from less than
25µm up to 127µm (1mil up to 5mils).
Surface roughness, on the other hand, is
measured using a stylus instrument and is the
combined measurements of the surface profile
and the frequency of the peaks across a linear
length, also known as the peak count.
Creating a surface profile increases the
surface area of the metal, which will therefore
improve the adhesion of the coating
By creating a profile on a substrate, the
overall surface area of the substrate increases
significantly. The more the profile increases,
the more the surface area increases,
improving adhesion.
For example, if paint is applied to a smooth,
mirror finished piece of steel, it is very easy to
scrape off – even with a finger nail. However,
the same paint applied to a blasted piece of
steel would be a lot harder to scratch off.
Why is it important to measure
surface profile?
Corrosion occurs when three things come
together – a ferrous material (such as a steel
substrate), oxygen (from the air) and moisture.
If just one of the three elements is removed,
corrosion cannot happen.
Applying a coating to the steel provides a
barrier between the steel and both the air and
moisture, preventing corrosion. If the coating
is damaged, or simply falls or flakes from the
surface due to poor adhesion, then the steel
will rust or corrode and in time, weaken the
structure.
Along with surface cleanliness, measuring
surface profile helps to ensure that the surface
of the substrate is in the condition specified
by the coating supplier for the applied coating
to perform as required.
What surface profile is required?
The surface profile required is specified by
the coating manufacturer or the coating
specification agreed to by all parties. The
specified surface profile is directly related to
the specified dry film thickness of the coating
being applied.
Typically, the surface profile specified is the
peak-to-valley height in either microns or mils
and the dry film thickness is also specified in
either microns or mils. It is important that the
required coating thickness must be applied to
both the valleys and the peaks.
If the profile is too high, the amount of
paint required to cover the peaks significantly
increases. More paint will be needed to
ensure the high peaks remain coated. Peaks
that are left uncoated or too thinly coated are
at risk of rust spots or pinpoint rust (rust rash).
If the profile is too low, then the coating
thickness applied will be too high for the
profile. The coating thickness is calculated for
a specified profile and if the resulting coating
is too thick, possible cracking of the coating
whilst it cures can occur, resulting in corrosion
and pinholes.
There may also be an insufficient surface
area to provide a suitable key for the coating -
leading to poor adhesion and premature
coating failures.
22 MEASUREMENT
How do we measure surface
profile?
There are a number of methods for
measuring surface profile, they all work in
different ways and measure different
parameters.
Surface Comparators are flat, metal plates,
which contain a number of reference surface
profiles. The comparator is placed on the
surface which is compared with the reference
profiles through either sight or touch. The
profile is then determined and recorded.
While this is a quick assessment of the surface
profile, it’s a highly subjective method of
measurement, as it can come down to the
opinion of one person over another.
A widely used and less subjective alternative
is the Replica Tape method.
A tape with a compressible memory foam
pad is applied to the surface, and rubbed with
a burnishing tool. By rubbing the tape into the
surface, the foam is pushed into the profile,
creating an inverse or mirror image of the
profile. The tape is then removed and
measured using a thickness gauge, such as
the Elcometer 124 gauge. The replica tape
method provides a maximum peak to valley
height measurement of the profile.
Unfortunately this method has a low stated
accuracy and the test itself is time consuming
– especially for profile ranges where the
average of the same area with multiple grades
of tape needs to be tested.
A faster, more accurate and repeatable
method for measuring surface profile is by
using the Elcometer 224 Digital Surface Profile
Gauge.
The Elcometer 224 Digital
Surface Profile Gauge
With the ability to measure profiles up to
500 m (20mils), on flat or curved surfaces, the
Elcometer 224 Digital Surface Profile Gauge
provides repeatable and reproducible
measurements, accurate to ±5%.
The Elcometer 224 is a needle depth
gauge, which is very easy to use. Simply zero
the gauge on glass, ensuring the probe is 90°
to the substrate. Then, to take one spot
measurement, place the gauge on to the
blasted surface. The spring mounted needle
will measure the depth of the profile from the
peaks of the profile at that particular point.
As the measurement point is not necessarily
at the very bottom of the valley, and could be
somewhere on the slope, either five or ten
individual measurements should be taken
within a 100mm (4”) diameter area. The
gauge will then provide a reading.
In recent years, there have been changes to
one of the most used profile standards, ASTM
D 4417. Having previously stated that a profile
measurement using a needle profile gauge
should be the average of ten readings, this
was changed to the maximum of ten readings.
Within the industry, concerns were raised
that this was not a true characterisation of the
surface and following some revision, the
Standard has recently been further revised.
The Standard now allows either the maximum
of ten readings or the average of ten readings,
which is thought to be a more realistic and
statistically correct way of assessing the
readings and the profile.
The reading displayed on the Elcometer
224 is user selectable, and can either be the
average peak-to-valley height or the maximum
reading of the five or ten readings, depending
on which mode is selected for the standard
being worked to.
Whichever test method or Standard is being
worked towards, the Elcometer 224 has a
range of easy-to-use Measurement Modes
Using the very latest in surface profile
measuring technology, the gauge’s
measurement modes allows data to be easily
collected and recorded in accordance with the
relevant test method or standard.
In Custom Mode, simply select to take
either 5 or 10 readings per measurement,
then specify either the average, highest or
lowest measurement of each set of readings to
be displayed and saved into the batch
memory.
In Standards Mode, select the International
Standard being worked towards and the
Elcometer 224 will automatically set the data
collection method accordingly. When selecting
ASTM D 4417, the gauge can also store either
the average or highest reading as the
measurement.
In Intermediate Mode, the gauge will take
individual peak-to-valley measurements and
save them into the batch memory. The
Elcometer 224 will then automatically calculate
and display key statistics. Limits can also be set
using this mode, enabling the gauge to alarm
whenever the reading is outside a predefined
acceptable range.
Instant Live Readings Direct to
PC, Tablet or Smartphone
Once the readings have been taken, they
usually need to be recorded. One way is to
write them down individually as they are taken
and type them into a spreadsheet later;
however, this is a very time-consuming
method which allows for mistakes to be made.
By using Elcometer’s free data management
software, ElcoMaster, the Elcometer 224 can
connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth, and
either transfer the readings from memory, or
transfer each reading into the ElcoMaster App,
live as they are taken.
Each live reading can be transferred via
Bluetooth® to a PC, smartphone or tablet and
at the click of a button professional reports
may be generated. The reports can then be
emailed to clients, just seconds after the
inspection has been carried out, or uploaded
via cloud technology, making it accessible
anywhere in the world.
GPS coordinates can also be recorded
along with the surface profile when using the
ElcoMaster® Mobile App. The app plots the
values on to a map which is displayed on the
screen, showing exactly where the readings
were taken.
Portable, rugged hand-held
design - ideal for field use
The Elcometer 224 Digital Surface Profile
Gauge includes all the features that have
come to be expected from an Elcometer
designed and manufactured product, including
ease of use, a fast reading rate of 50+
readings per minute and a robust and
ergonomic design.
The signature orange and black gauge
comes with a menu driven colour LCD display
with auto rotate and user selectable statistics
and display modes. Its large memory is able to
store 150,000 date and time stamped
readings in 2,500 batches.
Performance by design

24 OVENS
Take five
Arecent development in oven design is
the ability to predict the characteristics
of the oven before manufacture,
utilising Computer Aided Design. Modern
manufacturing methods include; laser-cut
components, PTFE door seals, high density
insulation, corrosion resistant materials,
accurate temperature control and mapping
this ensures the product is designed to meet
the customer’s needs. The effects of air flow
volumes, velocity and points of entry into the
hot zone can be simulated precisely. This
guarantees the performance of the oven
before manufacture, allowing the purchaser to
be confident.
Sizing
This is an area which can offer some
difficulty. The desire to specify an oven to meet
the largest conceivable product the customer
needs is one to be wary of because this
eventuality may only occur infrequently.
Whichever size you choose, you can guarantee,
the next job being quoted will be slightly too
large for your new oven! A safer route to take
is to work backwards from your required daily
through-put. Calculate how long it takes to
spray, load, cure and offload. This will give a
number of oven cycles that can fit into the
shift this together with the size of the most
common component will highlight the desired
oven size. Oven construction and access into
your chosen area is also a factor. Take into
consideration the external size of the oven and
the access into the building, something often
overlooked - it always pays to look up, at the
height of the roof and door lintels. Some
suppliers deliver in kit form, and others as an
entity. Make sure you walk the route your oven
will need to take within your factory, looking
for any areas which restrict access as this may
alter how your oven is designed and
assembled. Your chosen supplier should be
able to work with you to select the size that is
best suited to your needs.
Fuel
Gas is the most popular fuel, natural or
propane, in some cases propane although
more expensive to purchase by volume does
offer twice the thermal capacity of natural gas,
so you will use half the amount. Electrically
heated systems are not necessarily always the
most expensive to run as the sophisticated
control can minimise, running costs. And
distributing electrical energy from the
incoming supply from the position of the
oven can be a lot less expensive than a gas
main. For a gas oven to work, fresh air has to
be introduced into the oven to make the gas
burner operate, whereas an electric oven
doesn’t require this.
Usage
How will you use your oven? Are your
products small and easily transportable? Are
they large and awkward? How heavy are they
are?
In recent years push-pull conveyors in
various configurations offer ease of loading
and unloading and reduce the time this takes.
The correct conveyor system should include
work-in-progress areas and the ability for
products to pass each other. Tracks also give
wide-open spaces in the workshop as oppose
to trolley systems which unnecessarily clutter
the working area.
Efficiency
The running cost of the oven is of
paramount importance, a well-made and
designed oven should last you ten years or
more. The long-term savings on running costs
will far outweigh any additional costs on a
cheaper alternative. Modern control systems
will match fuel usage to product weight and
volume.
Cost
You can only spend what you can
realistically afford and it depends on the stage
of your business. A good supplier will
recognise where you are on your business
journey and be able to help you work out the
best product for your budget and improve
your productivity which will ultimately impact
on your profitability. Do not be afraid to tell
the supplier what you can afford, it is not in
their interests to sell you the most expensive
item, if they are looking to service your needs
long-term. Do not be afraid to consider preowned
items as a first purchase, as most
reputable manufactures will be upgrading
their existing customers on a regular basis.
28 CORROSION CONTROL
Reinventing primer
For chemical plants, chemical tank farms
and refineries, atmospheric corrosion of
steel is a continual concern that can
require re-priming and re-painting every few
years to prevent safety issues and the
premature replacement of costly infrastructure.
Industrial primers represent a critical
foundation for paints and coatings in harsh
environments. However, they have certain
limitations and have historically been unable
to effectively deal with the eventual formation
and future recurrence of rust. Traditional
primers only encapsulate rust until the
paint/primer is scratched, chipped, or
breached and moisture and oxygen migrate
under the film, allowing the corrosion to
spread.
As a result, facility maintenance personnel
or contracted coating applicators must
repeatedly utilize costly, time-consuming and
environmentally hazardous surface
preparation methods such as sandblasting to
prepare surfaces to be primed and repainted.
However, not all environments can withstand
the impact of sandblasting, which can damage
critical surfaces and may be impractical for
reaching hard-to-access areas such as cracks
and crevices. Sandblasting is also expensive
and time-consuming, and even poses its own
safety risks to applicators and the
environment.
Now, however, more advanced primers
have been formulated that set a higher
performance bar in corrosive environments.
These reactive primers go beyond
encapsulating rust to instead convert it to a
protective material (iron phosphate) to
minimize the risk of further corrosion. The
chemical bond provides superior adhesion,
high corrosion protection and also eliminates
under-film corrosion.
The rust conversion formulation also differs
from prior technologies by using a non-toxic,
ultra-low VOC water-based acrylic polymer
solution that can be applied with minimal
surface preparation and without the need for
sandblasting of steel substrates.
Primer pitfalls allow corrosion
One of the main reasons that petrochemical
facilities are so susceptible to corrosion is that
traditional primers have serious deficiencies in
this area.
“We have found that the typical primer and
topcoat needs to be replaced in a harsh
chemical facility environment every couple of
years,” says Dave Marzano, owner of Maxim
Contracting, a Newark, New Jersey-based
industrial and commercial contractor.
“There are not many products out there
that will stop the rust.”
A common failure of primers is not
sufficiently protecting against under-film
corrosion.
“A primer must first form an effective
chemical bond to the metal substrate,” says
Martin Lawrence, managing director of New
Jersey-based NanoRustX LLC, a supplier of
advanced primer technologies. “Without this,
rust promoters like oxygen and humidity will
creep underneath the primer causing further
corrosion. Most primers on the market go
only as far as encapsulating the iron oxide
which is not 100% effective in preventing
further rust from occurring.”
Another reason that chemical facilities are
prone to corrosion when utilizing typical
primers is that a high level of surface
preparation is required because most rust
Finishing - May/June 2020

CORROSION CONTROL 29
primers on the market are sensitive to
chlorides.
“Even a minute amount of chloride on the
steel can cause coating system failure,” says
Lawrence. “This is why leading coating
manufacturers demand extreme levels of
surface cleaning (sandblasting) and removal of
chlorides to a level of 5 mcgr/m 2 , which is
nearly impossible to achieve. Even when
sandblasting is used for surface preparation,
flash rusting will still occur.”
In response, the search for more enduring
corrosion protection at petrochemical facilities
has involved the development of long-lasting
primers that correct the deficiencies of
traditional methods.
Lasting corrosion protection
NanoRustX (NRX) NanoPrime, for example,
works by chemically reacting with iron and
iron oxide (rust) to form iron phosphate and
creates a Nano bond with both metallic and
painted surfaces. The chemically bonded layer
is insoluble and extremely corrosion resistant.
This “bonding” process also provides superior
adhesion and flexibility and stops under-film
corrosion that occurs when conventional
coatings are damaged.
The non-toxic, ultra-low VOC primer
contains nano-polymers for added strength
and durability and has been tested to
successfully coat surfaces from rust-free to up
to 700 microns of rust. The elasticity of the
advanced primer makes it very durable in
temperature variations from -670C to +2000C
(-900F to 400F).
Because the advanced primer actually
chemically reacts with galvanized steel surface,
no surface preparation is required other than a
water wash. The water-based acrylic polymer is
not sensitive to chlorides or rust and can
actually neutralize them. Unlike initial
generations of rust converting primers, the
primer performs equally well on clean, partially
corroded and heavily rusted surfaces.
Typically, a power wash (240 bar/3500 psi) is
all that is needed before applying to steel
(clean or corroded), galvanized steel or
aluminum in order to remove loose paint, dirt
and grease. The primer can be applied to a
corroded surface by hand brush, roller or
airless spray gun on the substrate. After the
application of the primer, a single coat of a
low VOC top coat will complete the job.
When a chemical plant in the Newark, New
Jersey area had a number of roof exhausts
with severe corrosion, Marzano, who had
sought a lasting corrosion solution for his
customers, applied a coat of NRX NanoPrime
with no topcoat to a 50’ high roof stack as a
trial.
“The roof exhausts were so rusty the
chemical company was ready to replace them,
which would have cost about $7,000 to
$9,000,” says Marzano. “However, about five
years later there still is no visible rust on the
roof exhausts. The success of the trial
demonstrated the primer’s effectiveness
against chemical plant corrosion, so we have
applied it many times since then on
everything from roofs, exhaust fans, and
exhaust stacks to tanks for carbon monoxide
and sulphuric acid.”
In one of Marzano’s recent applications, his
Maxim Contracting work crew coated four
outdoor and three indoor chemical tanks,
ranging from 1,500-10,000 gallons, including
a liquid nitrogen tank and a 2,000-gallon
CO2 tank.
Using a spackle knife and palm sander to
remove existing loose flaking paint and rust,
and a water wash with nearby hose, the
surfaces were readied for applying the primer.
The system included two coatings of primer
applied by roller, followed by one application
of the customer supplied water-based,
industrial epoxy topcoat.
“With NRX NanoPrime, less surface
preparation is required compared to other
primers,” says Marzano. “Also, it can dry in
30 minutes to touch and takes about two
hours to apply a second coat, depending on
temperature, which is much faster than typical
primer and paint. So, we finished the job in a
few days rather than a week, which helped to
reduce potential downtime for the facility.”
“But the bottom line is that the primer
prevents corrosion and really lasts,” concludes
Marzano.
30 INSTALLATIONS
Maintaining production
Increased supply
Axalta has increased the supply of its Voltatex electrical insulating
resins to ensure its medical device customers are well equipped to
rapidly produce life-saving equipment, such as ventilator motors and
N95 facemasks, which are in high demand by hospitals globally during
the coronavirus pandemic.
"Axalta's Voltatex products are on the front lines in the fight against
COVID-19," said Dave Heflin, Axalta's vice president, global industrial
liquid coatings. "As a supplier to medical device companies globally, we
are manufacturing more product so that our customers can continue to
ramp up production of critical ventilators and N95 facemasks for
hospitals around the world."
"Voltatex products meet the highest quality standards, reduce the
weight of electrical motors by more than 15%, and can be used
without fear of interruption, even in the most demanding applications,"
continued Heflin. "We know that running motors at lower temperatures
can increase their lifetime and overall productivity. Our medical device
customers are relying on the benefits that our Voltatex products
provide as they aggressively increase production of the equipment and
supplies that will help save lives around the world."
New solutions
GEMÜ now offers solutions for
manufacturing diaphragm globe
valves with PD design (Plug
Diaphragm) as multi-port valve
blocks made from stainless steel
in a reliable process.
The focus is on the
requirements for "hygienic
design" and cost effective
process-optimized manufacture.
It is possible with immediate
effect to configure multi-port
valves with diaphragm globe
valves on a case by case basis
according to customer
requirements. For instance,
multi-port valve blocks with the
control valve GEMÜ 567 BioStar
control have already been
designed for aseptic dosing from
an ultra-pure water loop.
Another example are filling
blocks with the GEMÜ F40 and
GEMÜ F60 filling valves,
developed in combination with
auxiliary valves as a complete
solution for gas control.
The integration of diaphragm
globe valves in multi-port valve
blocks combines the advantages
of a valve block with those of PD
design. This opens the door to
new opportunities for plant
operators, which GEMÜ can
implement according to custom
requirements.
BOFA International is maintaining production of its portable fume
and dust extraction systems, filters and spares so that businesses vital
to the fight against coronavirus - including those in food and
beverage, pharmaceuticals, health care products, safety equipment,
and personal care items - can continue to operate as efficiently as
possible.
All these sectors are heavy users of laser technology in coding,
marking and packaging, and without effective extraction, production
lines could become contaminated with dust and particulate,
heightening the risk of manufacturing downtime just at the time
when demand on key industry sectors has never been greater.
Compact and capable
The compact, high-precision
Sphero machine, designed for
machining workpieces with
spherical forms, has been further
developed by Thielenhaus
Microfinish into a combination
solution capable of handling the
entire superfinishing process in
just one clamping operation.
The chuck unit is mounted
vertically and easily accessible for
fast changeover. Thanks to the
integrated tool changer with a
capacity for up to ten tools, even
complex machining processes
can be carried out in a single
clamping.
The design of the Sphero
many years of test and
production work. Workpieces
with diameters of up to 75 mm
modern, compact and
ergonomic design. It is used, for
example, by medical technology
manufacturers to produce hip
32 CASE STUDY
Streamlined process
When a global leader in the
development and manufacture of
orthopaedic implants approached
Layton Technologies for a solution to an issue
resulting from the widespread innovation and
increase in additive manufacturing (3D
printing), Layton knew that they had the
capabilities to assist with this highly complex
issue.
The additive manufacturing process in
question called for the 3-dimensional printing
of parts using two different proprietary wax
products.
One of these waxes is used as a support
material for the second wax which forms the
basis of complex geometry moulds for the
orthopaedic implants.
The current process for the removal of the
support wax is an extremely labour intensive
process which involves the heating and
agitation of a flammable solvent in an open
top container using a hot-plate and a
magnetic stirrer.
This set-up afforded little control of the
flammability hazards associated with heating
the solvent and provided the operators with
minimal protection from any solvent vapours
and fumes.
The melting point of the support wax was
identified as only 5°C higher than the
melting point of the mould wax and it was
essential that when removing the support
wax the mould wax was not altered in any
way to preserve the precisely printed
geometries.
The client identified the need to improve
this process as their requirement using this
type of additive manufacturing was increasing
rapidly and the current manual set-up had
become a bottle neck.
Layton were tasked with developing a
streamlined process which removed the
labour-intensive nature of the current process,
greatly reduced the downtime created by the
manual cleaning requirement and
guaranteeing an end result together with
ensuring that waste solvent which was loaded
with support wax was kept to an absolute
minimum.
The lengthy project included the following
requirements and events
1. Extensive, customer witnessed, trials were
conducted to rationalise the current process
into a single stage system utilising a
flammable solvent at elevated and very
precisely controlled temperatures to ensure
the removal of only one type of wax.
2. Due to the nature of the wax
contamination detailed calculations were done
by Layton to assess the wax loading of the
solvent and the length of time that the solvent
in the system could continue processing the
product before it was saturated with support
wax.
3.The trials and calculations resulted in the
proposal for a bespoke system which not only
removed the support wax without affecting
the other wax but also reprocessed the
solvent to ensure that the waste stream for
the system was kept to an absolute minimum.
4. A comprehensive technical proposal was
produced to satisfy the concerns that the
client had expressed as to the overall ability of
the new system to meet the requirements of
the project.
The documentation produced by Layton,
and the results of the tests conducted were all
accepted by the client as an acceptable
alternative to the current process. An
extensive technical proposal was produced
which included for automated processing, this
satisfied the concerns that the client had
expressed as to the overall ability of the new
system to meet the requirements of the
project.
Following the issue of the purchase order to
Layton their in-house design team produced a
comprehensive design documentation
package which included a general
arrangement diagram, a piping and
instrumentation diagram and a functional
design specification, a software design
specification together with a comprehensive
Project Plan.
At the same time as the main system
design and manufacture Layton undertook
the design, development and manufacture of
a specialist fixturing to hold the components
and to optimise the cleaning and drying
process.
The final design resulted in a new, fully
automated, low emission flammable solvent
cleaning system complete with Layton’s fiveyear
warranty.
34 ROBOTICS
Robots drive innovation
During the development of new special
paints, WB Coatings reached its limits
when it came to the usual manual
application. That’s when the global paint and
coating manufacturer came up with what
seemed a rather unconventional idea for its
industry: to add a compact painting robot
from Dürr to its lab. This enables fully
reproducible coating layer thicknesses in the µ
range that are absolutely essential in the
development of chrome-effect paint systems,
for example.
The pre-installed, ready-to-paint robot from
Dürr is a professional solution for automated
paint application. With coordinated and tested
components, it is tailored to the requirements
of the general industry – a combination that
makes it unique on the market. WB Coatings
is the first paint manufacturer to use the
“ready2spray” robot in the development of its
new products.
WB Coatings has been known for its
innovations for more than 135 years. Not only
did it invent hammertone paint, but also many
other special coatings. To this day, it is
intensively engaged in research and
development. The in-house lab continuously
optimizes the recipes for the traditional
industrial paint sector, while the innovation
center focuses on new developments for
various sectors.
One new product is a chrome-effect paint
that can be used, amongst others, for vehicle
interiors. It gives components made from
plastic, such as window lift switches or
decorative trims on the steering wheel, a
deceptively realistic chrome look. WB
Coatings achieves this effect using paint
systems consisting of one, two or three
coating layers. “Without using a robot, we
would not have been able to develop these
new paint systems as a chrome-free
alternative for shiny, silver-coloured surfaces.
The challenge is to apply the coating layers of
the chrome-effect paint very evenly. And the
three-layer paint system in particular needs
very thin, reproducible coating layers of 2 to 3
µm. This is something even highly
experienced hand painters can’t achieve,”
explains Andreas Ohletz, head of sales for
Innovations at WB Coatings.
Finishing - May/June 2020

ROBOTICS 35
To meet this requirement, WB Coatings
opted for an automated painting solution from
Dürr. It consists of the compact six-axis robot
EcoRP 10 R1100 with state-of-the-art
application technology including mixing and
dosing technology for two-component paints
(2C), paint supply systems, and controller.
Industrial series production
modelled in the lab
The robot system’s automated spray
program eliminates any deviations, and thus
delivers maximum reproducibility. This starts
with dosing the components in the exact same
ratio every time. Mixing the tiny quantities of
just a few milligrams by hand poses too great
a risk of inaccuracies. The painting result is
also influenced by the application speed and
the distance from the object to be painted.
These factors inevitably vary with manual
application, while the robot works completely
uniformly and as a result also produces
identical coating layer thicknesses. “A major
benefit for us is the in-house tests that we can
now conduct in our technical center with
various base coats to test recipes. The robot
lets us model automated industrial production
and develop new paint systems that can make
production more profitable for our customers
involved in series production,” says Sebastian
Grahammer, head of development in WB
Coatings’ innovation center.
Robot for complex 3D
geometries
Normally only sample panels and speed
shapes are painted in the paint manufacturers’
labs. The flat spray system WB Coatings
originally had in mind would have been
sufficient for this. However, Sebastian
Grahammer is convinced that the decision to
opt for the six-axis robot will give the paint
manufacturer the flexibility to respond to
customer requirements in the future: “The
robot lets us paint 3D objects with complex
geometries. With a 2D spray system, we
would have limited ourselves in what we could
develop.”
Ready to spray in no time
Since the application technology is already
pre-installed, the Dürr robot system at WB
Coatings was set up, installed and ready to
paint within just a day and a half. Its
compact dimensions enabled it to be
integrated into the existing painting booth
despite the space constraints. When the
robot is in the parked position, painting by
hand is still possible in front of the same
extraction wall.
“The painting robot is part of our
ready2integrate concept. The concept
centres on technologically sophisticated and
tested application solutions that are easy to
integrate into individually designed plants.
Dürr collaborates with selected system
partners here, since they enjoy extremely
close proximity to their customers, are
familiar with their requirements, and can act
with an extremely high level of flexibility,”
explains Holger Beiersdorfer, vice president
industrial products at Dürr.
covering Hi-line’s comprehensive range of
class leading compressed air dryers.
Although hiring a compressor is easy
enough for short-batch emergency runs or
exceptionally busy periods, finding specialist
drying equipment is not so straightforward.
And yet air quality is just as important in
temporary periods as it is during long-term
regular operations.
Hi-line overcomes this issue by offering hire
options on a vast range of compressed air
dryers, including refrigerant, heatless, heatregenerative
and point-of-use models. Highquality,
competitive filtration packs can also be
lowest energy cost.
For those seeking heatless dryers, Hi-line
can offer its proven HPSA (Heatless Pressure
Swing Adsorption) units, which come in ‘plug
and play’ format mounted on skids with their
own filtration package as standard. Classleading
performance is assured with HPSA
range, as it is with Hi-line’s series of heatregenerative
adsorption dryers, as well as its
point-of-use desiccant adsorbers. The latter
are ideal for the small-scale separation of
humidity from compressed air systems.
From as little as £50 per week, Hi-line can
supply from a huge stock of ready-to-go
compressed air dryers, including Class O,
38 FUME EXTRACTION
Smart electronics need smarter
fume extraction
As global demand for Printed Circuit
Boards (PCBs) accelerates, thanks to
greater automation in industry and the
miniaturisation of devices, electronics
companies are being reminded about the
workplace health risks associated with certain
production processes.
The manufacture and assembly of PCBs
can result in harmful emissions being released
into the working environment, so BOFA
International, a global leader in portable fume
extraction technology, is urging businesses to
check that their extraction systems remain fit
for purpose during this period of rapid
growth.
“According to a recent analysis, the global
PCB market is predicted to reach around
USD80 billion by 2024 – this presents
significant opportunities for companies but
can also put pressure on production capacity,”
says David Thompson, business development
manager at BOFA.
“So when businesses are planning for
growth, we would advise them to ensure that
their existing fume extraction systems are
maintained in optimal condition and that any
new investment in manufacturing includes the
latest technology to remove airborne
contaminants. In this way, extraction
technology will help workplace environments
stay safe for employees while contributing to
achieving productivity goals.”
While the health risks associated with
manual and automated soldering are widely
understood, there are other processes in PCB
manufacture and assembly that can also be a
cause of concern.
For example, the batch marking by laser of
PCB boards is key in traceability for the
electronics sector, but the emissions resulting
from lasering can include solid particles, liquid
droplets or vapours/gases, and can be
particularly hazardous to respiratory function,
depending on the substrate and laser
parameters.
Another example is conformal coating,
which protects PCBs from ingress of dust and
moisture. This process is likely to involve
organic chemicals (e.g. cyclohexane, xylene,
etc.), which will give off hazardous fume and
mist, but which can be properly controlled by
BOFA filtration technology. Many businesses
apply coatings by means of aerosol sprays
which use a propane/butane propellant, which
aren’t particularly harmful, but can mask the
smell of more harmful chemicals.
Said David Thompson: “BOFA solutions
combat all these risks through multi-stage
filtration technology that includes specialist
activated carbon filters designed to capture
specific chemical emissions.
“HEPA filters ensure a particulate filter
efficiency of near 100% (99.997%) is
achieved, contributing to compliant health
protection while helping deliver the
productivity gains that come from fume and
dust free process lines.”
In the company’s experience, manufacturers
are also embracing portable extraction
technology alongside, or in place of, vent-toair
or centralised exhaust systems, to satisfy
the requirements of agile working practices
increasingly driving improved productivity.
40 PUMPS
Extreme hygiene
For consumers and the government, a
maximum of safety and quality in the
production of food is essential. In order
to ensure the highest standards of hygiene,
food producers and processors are obliged to
clean their machinery regularly via
washdowns. To guarantee that vacuum
pumps are effectively protected from the used
aggressive cleaning media, Leybold has
developed a series of Hygienic Enclosures.
The vacuum specialist offers users these
stainless steel housings in seven different
sizes, tailor made for each vacuum pump.
Risk of contamination
eliminated
In the food industry, vacuum pumps are
often placed directly next to the processing
and packaging lines and thus not
implemented in the equipment. On the one
hand, this leads to a higher vacuum
performance because, losses in pumping
speed over longer pipelines are avoided. A
direct positive consequence of this, are shorter
process cycles and a better product quality.
On the other hand, unprotected pumps are
directly exposed to aggressive cleaning media
during the rinsing processes. Over time, this
leads to corroded vacuum pumps, shorter life
cycles, higher costs and ultimately even to
food contamination.
Effectively protected in
stainless steel enclosures
In order to counteract these risks, Leybold
has developed a new protection concept
with the Hygienic Enclosures. Encased by
these stainless steel enclosures, the vacuum
pumps can be positioned near machines
and systems without any problems. “On the
basis of the protected Leybold vacuum
pumps we can create better and more
robust solutions for the demanding food
applications”, emphasizes the responsible
product manager Niels Gorrebeeck. “Of
course, this applies all the more to
applications such as stuffers, tumblers and of
course packaging machines, where the
machines and systems are cleaned and
disinfected particularly frequently and
intensively,” the product manager explains.
Tailor made & easy to install
Gorrebeeck explains that these stainless
steel enclosures are tailor made for each
vacuum pump. As a result each enclosed
pump can run constantly on every working
pressure. The only limitation is the maximal
ambient temperature for the enclosure.
Nevertheless, the normal working
temperature in F&P environments are around
10°C, we qualified most enclosures up to
25°C. Further all the enclosures are offered as
a Do It Yourself kit and can be as well
installed as commissioned by the user
themselves without great effort. “These
properties make of the Hygienic Enclosures a
cost-effective, sustainable solution. In the end,
hygienic enclosures makes investments in
expensive piping obsolete and at the same
moment they offer a better pumping speed
performance,” argues Niels Gorrebeeck.
Sustainable solution
Incidentally, this also applies not least with
regard to future packaging concepts.
Gorrebeeck believes that the industry is also
well equipped for this with the new
enclosures: “Regardless of which solutions will
prevail, food applications can be operated
from today more hygienically, ergonomically
as well as flexibly. Leybold can successfully
accompany these processes into the future
with our holistic solution approaches.”
42 DEBURRING
15 second cleaning
As a cost-efficient answer to continually
increasing demands on the absence of
burrs and particulate cleanliness,
Ecoclean has developed the EcoCvelox
system. Its modular design allows a custom
configuration and subsequent expansion, at
any time, of equipment from a single source
to provide a combined high-pressure
deburring, cleaning and drying capability.
Cycle times of only 15 seconds per pallet can
thus be achieved. Further standard-setting
features of the EcoCvelox system include a
CAD/CAM interface for rapid and easy offline
programming of the high-pressure deburring
function plus highly dynamic part handling
technology.
Hydraulic and pneumatic system
components, engine blocks, pump and valve
housings, nozzles, transmission parts, steering
and brake elements and other, mechatronic
components – these are just some examples
of parts subject to ever more stringent
specifications regarding deburring and
technical cleanliness. Formerly, meeting both
requirements in an optimum manner called
for the use of equipment from diverse
manufacturers. Now, with its innovative
EcoCvelox concept, Ecoclean GmbH has
developed a modular solution that combines
5-axis high-pressure deburring with various
part cleaning and drying processes in an
efficient and space-saving manner. Moreover,
in addition to flexibility, the new system sets
standards in terms of the process-to-cycle-time
ratio, equipment level, operating convenience,
ease of maintenance, and plant availability.
Maximum flexibility makes for
optimum adaptability to user
needs
The modular design allows users to
configure individual systems that merge highpressure
deburring, part cleaning and drying
from a single source, and to expand them as
needs evolve. A combination with other
products from this machine manufacturer,
e.g., solvent cleaning prior to deburring in
applications involving high oil drag-in, is also
possible. The diverse standard modules of the
EcoCvelox are rated for parts measuring 200
x 200 x 200 mm which are supplied on
pallets. This format covers most general
industry applications.
Tooling configuration for the various
processes is likewise adaptable to the specific
parts. Thus, high-pressure deburring can be
performed using the standard single spindle
at up to 1000 bar pressure (or a maximum of
3000 bar should the need arise). An optional
HP turret accommodating up to five different
tools supports complex deburring operations.
It provides a tool-to-tool changeover time of
only 1.5 seconds. The tools for the spindle
and the HP turret can be custom-designed to
match the given part and can be made by 3D
printing. For part cleaning, the processes of
injection flood washing, spray cleaning and
selective rinsing are available and can be
combined. Drying can be achieved by highvelocity
air blow-off and/or vacuum, with the
air blowing solution being integrable into a
cleaning module as well.
CAD/CAM interface for easy
programming of deburring
operations
An absolute novelty in deburring systems,
although a common feature on today's
machine tools, is the CAD/CAM interface that
can be integrated into the equipment. It
allows a transfer of part design data for
purposes of programming the high-pressure
deburring step. This can be done offline to
load the data into the machine controller,
Finishing - May/June 2020

CLEANING 43
which is easier and faster than any
conventional teach-in method. Moreover, this
capability helps to set up deburring processes
for new parts in minimum time and at low
cost. For part identification, a camera system
can be integrated. The result is an effective
and cost-efficient deburring operation, even
with ‘lot size one’ parts.
14.5 seconds process time in a
15-second cycle
Part handling for the deburring process
takes place in one Y-axis in the basic version.
However, for high throughputs and the
associated exacting cycle time requirements
the module can be fitted with a second Y-axis.
This allows loading and unloading to proceed
in parallel with deburring. The process time, at
14.5 seconds, thus becomes almost equivalent
to the 15-second cycle duration. The same can
be achieved for the cleaning and drying
module by integrating a second, concurrently
operating work chamber.
Pallets are moved between the individual
processing stations by means of a linear
drive system integrated as standard that is
characterized by its highly dynamic
performance and wear-free motor. It conveys
the parts from one station to the next at a
speed of 4 to 5 meters per second, thus
contributing further to the system's
operating efficiency. The loading process can
be automated by means of a gantry system
or robot.
At least 50 percent increase in
tool life
For process-inherent reasons, all tools used
for deburring are subject to wear, which in
turn results in a pressure drop. This means
that tools need to be replaced after a certain
number of operating hours. On the new
EcoCvelox, a patented software and a VFDcontrolled
high-pressure pump ensure that the
process pressure is readjusted for this effect.
This smart solution, providing a continual
adaptation of the high-pressure level, extends
tool life by at least 50 percent and thus boosts
plant availability at the same time.
For a fast and efficient tool change, the
deburring module has a lateral maintenance
door. This provides easy access to both the
lance of the single spindle and to the turretmounted
high-pressure tools.
effective operator control
equipment's high process reliability and
availability rates is its new intuitive operator
guidance system. On the 19" flat screen
monitor (HMI), all of the system's modules are
presented separately and clearly in a complete
overview diagram, similar to a smartphone
display. If a problem occurs, this is indicated
by a colour change of the affected module,
e.g., to a shade of yellow or red. As the digital
documentation is integrated into the HMI, it
suffices to touch the image of the respective
module briefly on the touch screen to view a
process technology diagram, flow diagram or
electrical circuit diagram in which all installed
components are neatly shown, with the
"malfunctioning" component (e.g., a pump)
highlighted in a different colour. A detailed
view of this item can in turn be pulled up at
the touch of a finger. Various functions such as
activating or deactivating this component not
merely support fast intuitive troubleshooting
but also supply clear problem solving
information. Moreover, the lists of wear parts
and spare parts featuring in the digital
documentation will facilitate part ordering if
necessary.
Due to its high flexibility in terms of both
equipment configuration and process design,
the EcoCvelox is an efficient, one-stop solution
for all deburring, cleaning and drying needs.
To avoid exhaust air, the system can optionally
be equipped with an energy efficient air
recirculation system.
44 CLEANING
Critical cleaning
Guyson International is urgently building
precision cleaning equipment for the
VentilatorChallengeUK Consortium. A
consortium of significant UK industrial,
technology and engineering businesses from
across the aerospace, automotive and medical
sectors, has come together to produce
medical ventilators for the UK.
Guyson manufactures its Kerry branded
'Microsolve 250', a solvent based ultrasonic
cleaning machine, which provides precision
cleaning of components used in the
ventilators and at present supplies them to
one of the OEM ventilator makers. The
Microsolve 250 Mono-Solvent system has
three process stages comprising of ultrasonic
cleaning, followed by vapour rinsing and
freeboard drying. Crucially the cleaning
process utilising the Guyson System is already
cleared by regulators and can support
immediate upscaling of production.
The VentilatorChallengeUK consortium is
committed to support the NHS’ requirements
to treat coronavirus patients and Companies
in the consortium have now received formal
orders from the Government in excess of
10,000 units.
Having already supplied two existing
demonstration units to the consortium
Guyson is now focussing its attention on the
manufacture of new systems. Guyson
employees have been diverted to this critical
manufacturing task and are working longer
shifts and committed itself right throughout
the Easter period to deal with production of
the machines. The first of the new units will
follow the most recent refurbished system in
2-3 weeks, a manufacturing lead time which
is usually 8-10 weeks.
Guyson has liaised very closely with
members of the VentilatorChallengeUK
consortium who have offered their own
resources to facilitate the fastest possible
delivery. Ultimately Guyson has reacted
manfully and been able to call on its own
supply chain and business partners and rise to
the challenge.
Mark Viner, MD of Guyson's Blast & Wash
Division states that “The response from the
team here at Guyson has been immense,
everyone is very much aware of the
importance of this initiative and is keen to do
their bit, our welders, fabricators, fitters,
electricians and test engineers offering literally
whatever it takes to get the job done. Two of
our team have even made the 10 hour round
trip to our electro-polishing supplier, a critical
part of the Microsolve manufacturing process
saving us valuable assembly time”. Mark goes
on to say “I’m very proud of the response
from the Guyson team and we are all grateful
to be able to play a small part in support of
the real heroes on the front line in the battle
with the coronavirus.“
46 COMPOSITES
Metal matrix composites
In the defence against the war on corrosion
and wear, maintenance repair engineers will
be hard pressed to find a plating material as
strong as chrome. Ideal for high-friction
environments, hard chrome is one of the most
commonly used plating materials due to its
increased erosion resistance, surface hardness
and durability.
Leaving a smooth and shiny finish, this bluewhite
lustrous metal has been used in a variety
of industries, such as aerospace engineering,
marine and automotive. Along with its
durability, hard chrome comes with a plethora
of benefits thanks to its lubricity, versatility, wear
resistance and adherence. However, there’s
increasing pressure to find an alternative to this
material due to the worker safety and
environmental issues it presents.
Chromium - a human carcinogen
While hard chrome isn’t toxic in its finish
state, it poses a risk to technicians when it is in
its hexavalent state (known as chromium(VI),
chromium 6, Cr(VI) or Cr6+). This is because it
has carcinogenic and teratogenic properties,
which has toxic and mutagenic effects on
microorganisms and cells. Airborne Cr6+ has
been linked to lung cancer and causes damage
to the nose, throat, and lungs when inhaled or
consumed.
Hexavalent chromium - causing
occupational cancer
It’s thought that 558,000 U.S. technicians are
exposed to airborne Cr6+ in the workplace
every year . Employees working in the
electroplating, welding and painting industries
are most at risk, as they are exposed to high
levels of Cr6+ compounds.
This is even more the case for workers who
handle Cr6+ pigment coatings and operate
plating baths, as they are responsible for its
storage and disposal. If hexavalent chromium is
improperly stored or disposed of, it poses risks
to both the technicians working with it, the
general public, and the environment.
The leak on the 1-696
In 2019, a liquid solution containing green
hexavalent chromium and cyanide made its
way onto the I-696 highway in Madison
Heights, Michigan, after an electroplating
factory had failed to properly dispose of more
than 37,000 gallons of hazardous waste they
had produced over the past 20 years. This put
countless lives at risk and the Environmental
Protection Agency spent $1.5 million cleaning
up the source of the pollution.
The decimation of Xiaoxin village
The improper disposal of chromium isn’t just
a problem in the US, but in China as well. In
2011, it was revealed that more than 5,000
tonnes of toxic chromium tailings were dumped
near a Yunnan reservoir in China.
Livestock died, crops were destroyed, and
their water turned yellow. An investigation
found that a pond upstream of the reservoir
had hexavalent chromium readings 2,000 times
above normal levels. While this problem was
discovered in 2011, 37 villagers have since died
of various forms of cancer since 20062 and are
suspected of being attributed to the chromium
tailings.
A call for a safer alternative
In September 2017, Cr6+ was banned in
Europe, under Europe’s Registration, Evaluation,
Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals
(REACH) regulations, after it was found to be
the root cause for 300 lung-cancer related
deaths a year . However, Cr6+ is still being
used in North America.
The CDC (Center for Disease Control) and
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health
Finishing - May/June 2020

COMPOSITES 47
Administration) have taken measures to protect
employees from hexavalent chromium
exposure, but more and more industries across
the globe are calling for a safer alternative - one
reason being the challenge in disposing of these
chemicals safely.
A solution for electroplaters
One solution that’s leading the way is brush
plated metal matrix composites (MMC).
Chromium in this form does not exhibit the
same safety hazards as hexavalent chromium
because they are contained in the solid
particles. This new generation of coating
doesn’t require the use of tanks and is much
safer for both people and the environment.
Made up of cobalt and chromium carbide,
nickel tungsten and chromium carbide, or
nickel and chromium carbide, these coatings
are improved by the co-deposition of the
nonmetallic carbide particles. The particles
become embedded in the metal matrix as it is
deposited using a range of current densities
and brush materials. When the size and
concentration of the particles are carefully
selected, engineers are able to tailor the plating
process to suit each individual component, as
they can fine-tune the deposit for wear
resistance, high temperature performance or
mechanical strength. With a low coefficient of
friction, high heat conduction, durability and
more, MMC is an excellent match for hard
chromium.
Brushing up on the process
As well as matching hard chrome’s
properties, brush plated MMC is also much
more efficient to apply. When a component
undergoes hard chrome plating in a tank, it
must be disassembled, the piece is transported
to the plating plant, masked, and placed into a
tank filled with a chromium plating solution.
Once the component has been plated, it is
shipped back and reassembled.
In contrast, brush plating with an MMC
solution such as SIFCO ASC’s Aeroshield® is
portable and can be used almost anywhere,
but it can also be mechanized or automated
for minimal operator intervention. Whether it’s
in the shop, or out in the field, downtime is
reduced as by masking off only the specific
area needing protection or repair, reducing the
need to disassemble the machine or transport
the parts.
Brushing up on sustainability
Another key benefit of brush plated MMC is
that it uses very small volumes of solutions in
comparison to tank plating. Whereas hundreds
of gallons of solution is required to fill up a
tank, a brush plating system can use as little as
one litre of solution depending on the size and
thickness requirement of the area. This not
only saves on space and helps reduce waste
but brings down the costs of waste disposal.
Storage space is also freed up as there’s no
need to store excess chemicals.
While brush and tank plating both require
proper ventilation and personal protective
equipment, when plating with chrome, OSHA
states employers must, “limit eight-hour timeweighted
average hexavalent chromium
exposure in the workplace to 5 micrograms or
less per cubic meter of air.” This becomes even
more complicated as the solution in the tank
will heat up and cool down, which is out of the
operator’s control. All of these puts workers at
risk and makes the process even longer.
However, depending on the size of the area
and thickness required, an MMC brush plating
operation only lasts approximately one hour
from start to finish. And since Cr6+ is not an
inherent property of the deposit, the
environmental and health risk is greatly
reduced.
MMC brush plating is a method of
electroplating that offers a high degree of
flexibility, and creates a safer, healthier working
environment. Whether for OEM or repair
applications, the portability, ease of use, and
the minimal solutions required make brush
plating an attractive option to consider.
48 WORKSHOP
Made to measure
A new range of high accuracy handheld measuring instruments has
been launched by Sensing Precision.
The Compact Air Meter (CAM) range includes four standalone
handheld instruments: two differential pressure instruments DP02 (0-
±500Pa) and the DP10 (0-±2500Pa) and two ambient conditions
instruments (BP32: Barometer (including thermohygrometer to
measure temperature and humidity) and TH60: temperature and
humidity).
“These compact high accuracy handheld instruments are an exciting
new addition to our range,” said Andrew Hamshere, managing
director. “They will fill a gap in the market for portable accurate
handheld meters for engineers to carry out reliable measurements.”
A tactile treat
Royal DSM, has announced the release of Skins Sandy, the newest
addition to its Skins range of haptic coating resins. Like the other Skins
resins, Sandy will enable brand owners and convertors to differentiate
their products by adding an extra layer of sensory experience.
Specifically, the new resin will enable print and packaging
manufacturers to add sand-like textures to a wide range of materials,
including food packaging.
Tactile elements in print and packaging are increasingly used to
differentiate brands, by providing a sensory experience that reflects
their products. DSM’s Skins coating resins range aims to meet this
need by enabling different textures in a range of print and packaging
materials. Skins Sandy will offer sandy-feel textures ranging from fine
to coarse and is particularly suitable for overprint varnishes, paper &
board, and flexible packaging. In particular, its broad food contact
compliance will open new possibilities for textured food packaging.
Going with the flow
Engis UK offers a range of
spherical and cylindrical lapping
products which enable users to
select the optimum product for
their specific process and
preferred method of application.
Engis diamond lapping and
polishing products are available
in a range of formulations:
Diamond Pastes - thick
formulations which are manually
spread across the part,
commonly used for hand
polishing, typically with a
companion lubricant.
Compound type: available in oil,
water and universal (oil/water)
soluble options, packaged in
syringe, Hyplicator or jar format.
Diamond Gels - thinner than
pastes, but still thick enough to
be applied with a syringe. The
thinner consistency results in
slower drying, reducing
scratching on larger parts while
maintaining good adhesion to
lapping tools and parts - ideal
for automated or hand polishing.
Compound type: oil or water
soluble, with companion
lubricant, available in compound
package options as 18g or 100g
syringe.
Flowable Compounds - can be
poured or pumped for
applications using automated
polishing. The thick formulation
will flow around the part while
maintaining good adhesion.
Compound type: oil or water
soluble, available in 400g
bottles.
Making the Mini
Kluthe’s NIKUTEX 4589 VOC-free Aqua Purge concentrate is now
being utilised during paint purge operations at the BMW MINI plant in
Oxford, which produces body shell components and undertakes final
vehicle assembly. The Kluthe chemical is producing results that not
only help to optimise paint line cleaning operations, but which are also
supporting the manufacturer’s commitment towards maintaining the
highest level of environmentally-aware production performance.
Mike Nelson, technical sales representative at Kluthe’s UK offices in
Milton Keynes, explained the process; “NIKUTEX 4589 is one of a
range of aqua purge products that we have developed to assist our
customers in achieving their targets in reducing the amount of VOC’s
and CO,” he says, “which has led to a substantial reduction in chemical
usage compared to the previous product.”
The Kluthe concentrated product is mixed with demineralised water
in a 1200 litre stainless steel mixing tank. This material then supplies
an additional 1000 litre stainless steel tank from which the solution is
pumped to a series of robotic heads that are purged after a set
number of vehicles and also between paint colour changes. After
purging the material is sent to the paint coagulation system, which then
treats the solution to remove any paint solids, while the demineralised
water contained in the solution also reduces the need to top-up the
system with fresh water which can arise from evaporation loss.
SLOTOLOY ZN „Generation VX“
The alkaline zinc-nickel processes SLOTOLOY ZN „Generation VX“ are operated with an anode (special anode VX 1)
specially adapted to the process and respective additives. Because of this, the formation of breakdown products and cyanide
on the anode is inhibited. The practical application at customers showed in converted electrolytes that even the cyanide
content is reduced actively.
Advantages of the zinc-nickel
processes „Generation VX”
· No cost-intensive membrane technology necessary.
· Improvement of current efficiency and appearance.
· Simple conversion of existing electrolytes.
· Low additive consumption.
· The formation of cyanide is significantly reduced and
may falls below the detection limit.
· Since there’s less non-active tetracyanonickelate there’s
a lower demand of nickel.
Decrease of the cyanide content after the conversion to
