Council gets notice to get rid of
Bromley odour by January 2022
THE CITY council has
until January next year to
stop offensive odour from
lingering beyond the site of
its controversial organics
processing plant.
Environment Canterbury
has served the city council an
abatement notice requiring that
it must stop the discharge of
“offensive and objectionable”
beyond its Living Earth plant by
January 31, 2022.
This comes
following a
move by the city
council last year
to redevelop
the composting
plant in Metro
Pl, Bromley, to
Helen
Beaumont
mitigate ongoing odour issues
plaguing nearby residents.
Said Helen Beaumont, city
council head of three waters
and waste: “We know that
people have had enough of
the odour problems and want
the situation resolved. Work is
already underway developing
the detailed scope of works
and user requirements that will
form the basis of the tender
documentation for the redevelopment
project.”
Pupils prepare gardens for festival
PLANTS, FLOWERS and
vegetables are sprouting at
schools across the city as they
finalise their designs for the
Grow Ōtautahi garden festival
next month.
Banks Avenue School and
five others will be taking part
in the Rātā Foundation School
Gardens exhibitions at the
three-day festival.
It comes after the event was
cancelled last year due to the
Covid-19 pandemic.
Pupils have been sharing
unique stories of their communities
by creating special
gardens.
The Rātā Foundation School
Gardens celebrate the best of
the local environment, with
a view to sustainability and
education.
Festival director Sandi
MacRae said she was impressed
at the work and detail in the
school gardens.
“What I’m seeing in the
lead-up to the event is really
blowing me away. The schools
are not only creating wonderful
reflections of their local communities,
they’re also weaving
the work into their learning
with a focus on community,
sustainability, creativity and
celebrating our environment,”
she said.
SPROUTING: Pupils across the city, including at Banks Avenue School, have been
preparing to show off their unique gardens at the Grow Ōtautahi festival next
month.
“The plants are growing well
and I can’t wait to see them
on-site in the Christchurch
Botanic Gardens.
“The commitment of the
teachers, children and local
communities involved is inspirational,
and I know visitors
to the festival will be delighted
with what they have created.”
Rātā Foundation chief
executive Leighton Evans said
the festival provided a unique
opportunity to celebrate the
Garden City while increasing
environmental awareness.
It also supported educating
children about sustainable
growing practices.
“The Rātā Foundation School
Gardens provide a pathway for
building the next generation of
gardeners and eco-warriors,”
said Evans.
The Grow Ōtautahi Christchurch
Garden Festival Trust is
closely monitoring the national
Covid-19 situation, following
all advice from the Government
and will respond “swiftly”
to any changing circumstances.
Said MacRae: “We are all
focused on the task at hand and
gearing-up to welcome people
to the first-ever Grow Ōtautahi.
This has always included a
sharp focus on public safety
and we’ll have appropriate
hygiene and health-related
processes in place.”
upgrade facility
• From page 1
The plant processes food and green
waste collected through the city’s
kerbside collection, which is then
turned into compost.
The city council will invest
about $22 million to upgrade the
technology and construct a second
processing building ensuring all parts
of the composting process occurred
indoors.
Beaumont said the organisation
was committed to completing the
re-development of the plant as soon
as possible.
“We have engaged a contractor to
assist us in completing this work as
quickly and efficiently as possible and
intend to bring a procurement plan
to elected members in March for final
approval,” she said.
“We have already let the market
know that we will soon be seeking
tenders for this project and will formally
call for expressions of interest
this month.”
Once a contractor was chosen, the
city council will be able to determine
firm timelines for the project, but
“work will begin this year.”
“The speed of implementation will
be a criteria that we consider when
assessing the tenders as we know this
work needs to be done quickly,’’ said
Beaumont.
CALLS HAVE been made to
stop rates increases in response
to the Covid-19 crisis.
City councillors James Gough,
Sam MacDonald, Catherine
Chu, Phil Mauger, Aaron Keown
and James Daniels have sent a
letter to Mayor Lianne Dalziel
asking her to lead a conversation
as to how a zero per cent rates
increase could be achieved this
year.
The city council is proposing
an average rates increase of 4.65
per cent across all ratepayers in
this year’s Draft Annual Plan
which is currently under public
consultation until April 5 and
will be finalised before July 1.
The 2018-2028 Long Term
Plan also predicts a 50 per cent
rates increase over 10 years.
Said Cr MacDonald: “In
the current environment it’s
clear business as usual is not
appropriate and the council
needs to look at how we enable
this 12-month rates increase
the economic confidence of our
city.”
Ms Dalziel said the las thing the council’s budget, which is
Manukura Kōrero - success
Koe te whakawhiti o te rā
You are like the shining of the sun
What a week it has been! If I had to
describe how angitu/successful
ākonga at Haeata have been I would
say ka mau te wehi! It has been
awesome over these first two weeks.
Haeata warmly congratulates
the ākonga who are part of Te Whānau
o Kōmanawa (supported by East
Empire Sports Inc.) who achieved 1st
place at the Waka Ama competition last
weekend at Nelson Lakes.
We love seeing success in the lives
of our ākonga outside of Haeata!
Ka mau te wehi!
Ākonga in uniform - yes!
Ākonga engaged in purposeful
learning - yes!
Ākonga supporting each other - yes!
Ākonga enjoying kura - yes!
With the unexpected move to COVID-19 Alert Level 2 Haeata moved
quickly to reestablish the protocols to keep us all safe. Regular hand-hygiene,
sensible distancing, and stringent cleaning protocols for all surfaces
in hapori have been implemented.
Our motto - “take nothing for granted and be vigilant.”
Fortunately we received notification today from the Prime Minister that
we have moved to COVID-19 Alert Level 1, so as we all breathe a
collective sigh of relief we say - “back to business as usual!”
The relentless pursuit of personal angitu/success.
Our success depends on our collective commitment to personal
accountability and personal definitions of excellent. I have been so impressed
to hear Ākonga say, this is what success looks like for me and
this is how I am going to achieve it this year. Success only comes after
clear goals are set, a plan is in place and a commitment to hard work.
Being a success only happens if the individual does the mahi - and I see
that at Haeata everyday.
I see our Ākonga are putting in the hard yards already and I am very
proud of them all! They do indeed - shine like the sun!
Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children’s University
Just before lockdown we enrolled 20 ākonga at Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children’s
University from Kōmanawa hāpori. Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children’s University aims to
raise young people’s aspirations for higher education and encourage lifelong learning. The
University of Canterbury and Lincoln University are working in partnership to deliver the
programme, which is the first of its kind in New Zealand.
We were so excited to see the success in 2020, that
this year we have managed to get 40 spots for 2021.
This is an exciting opportunity for our ākonga top
experience success in 2021!
As we continue to focus on success in
2021, we are warmly inviting all whānau
with years 11-13 students at Haeata to
attend a whānau hui on the 10th March
4pm-7pm. This will be a great time for
parents and ākonga to understand what
opportunities there are for them at
Haeata, and how they can best achieve
their goals.
The kaiako look forward to meeting our
whānau to share with them the exciting
possibilities that await their ākonga in
the future!
