PEGASUS POST Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday February 25 2021 3 Pupils prepare gardens for festival PLANTS, FLOWERS and vegetables are sprouting at schools across the city as they finalise their designs for the Grow Ōtautahi garden festival next month. Banks Avenue School and five others will be taking part in the Rātā Foundation School Gardens exhibitions at the three-day festival. It comes after the event was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Pupils have been sharing unique stories of their communities by creating special gardens. The Rātā Foundation School Gardens celebrate the best of the local environment, with a view to sustainability and education. Festival director Sandi MacRae said she was impressed at the work and detail in the school gardens. “What I’m seeing in the lead-up to the event is really blowing me away. The schools are not only creating wonderful reflections of their local communities, they’re also weaving the work into their learning with a focus on community, sustainability, creativity and celebrating our environment,” she said. SPROUTING: Pupils across the city, including at Banks Avenue School, have been preparing to show off their unique gardens at the Grow Ōtautahi festival next month. “The plants are growing well and I can’t wait to see them on-site in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. “The commitment of the teachers, children and local communities involved is inspirational, and I know visitors to the festival will be delighted with what they have created.” Rātā Foundation chief executive Leighton Evans said the festival provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the Garden City while increasing environmental awareness. It also supported educating children about sustainable growing practices. “The Rātā Foundation School Gardens provide a pathway for building the next generation of gardeners and eco-warriors,” said Evans. The Grow Ōtautahi Christchurch Garden Festival Trust is closely monitoring the national Covid-19 situation, following all advice from the Government and will respond “swiftly” to any changing circumstances. Said MacRae: “We are all focused on the task at hand and gearing-up to welcome people to the first-ever Grow Ōtautahi. The city council will invest about $22 million to upgrade the technology and construct a second processing building ensuring all parts of the composting process occurred indoors. Beaumont said the organisation was committed to completing the re-development of the plant as soon as possible. “We have engaged a contractor to assist us in completing this work as quickly and efficiently as possible and intend to bring a procurement plan to elected members in March for final approval,” she said. “We have already let the market know that we will soon be seeking tenders for this project and will formally call for expressions of interest this month.” Once a contractor was chosen, the city council will be able to determine firm timelines for the project, but “work will begin this year.” “The speed of implementation will be a criteria that we consider when assessing the tenders as we know this work needs to be done quickly,’’ said Beaumont.
