Angst over
big water
shake-up
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Massive changes in the
management of waterdelivery,
treatmentand disposal, likely
to affect every ratepayer, will
be laid out in March.
They are part of ahuge
shakeup by the Government,
which says comprehensive,
systemwide reform is needed
fordrinking,wastewater and
stormwater.
The ThreeWaters Reforms
to be announced next month
are likely to be the most
significant shakeup for local
government since the 1986
amalgamations.
Councils are likelytolose
controlofthese core services to
anew corporateentity.
Concerns havebeen aired by
community representatives
around the country that the
body, with no elected
personnel, will have no
accountabilitytoratepayers.
The reforms could alsosee
compulsory chlorination of
drinking water.
It willleave North
Canterbury councilspondering
their future, andwondering
what might be next in line for
Government reform.
There are67different
councilswhichown and
operate mostofthe country’s
drinking water,wastewater
andstormwater services.
The government says local
authorities face urgent
challenges in providing these
services, including funding,
meetingsafety standardsand
environmental expectations,as
wellasresiliencetonatural
hazards, climatechange, and
supporting growth.
It is likely the announcement
nextmonth will see water
services brought into asmall
number of entities encompassingmultipleregions.
The exactsize, shape and
design of theseentities is still
being workedthrough.
Private and communityrun
water supplies could also find
themselves capturedbythe
reforms.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black
and chiefexecutive Hamish
Dobbie are concerned their
residents and ratepayersknow
little aboutwhat the reforms
mean.
Theyfear the rural voice may
be lost, as big cities and urban
populations takethe lion’s
share of the limelight and
funding,once the changes kick
in.
‘‘Wedon’t want to be
scaremongering, but we want
there to be adeveloping
awarenesssopeople can make
informed decisions. It is not all
about local government. It is
about water and people.’’
Big artwork relocated
By SHELLEY TOPP
Nathan Pohio’s giant artwork,
Raise the anchor, unfurl the
sails, set course to the centre of
an ever setting sun! has been
temporarily removed from the
Waimakariri District Council
chambers.
It has been installed in the
Chamber Gallery, in the
Rangiora Library, where more
members of the public will be
able to see the widely
acclaimed work.
It was commissioned by the
Waimakariri Art Collection
Trust specifically for the
council chambers and was
initially installed there in July
2019.
The shortterm move to the
Chamber Gallery has been
done to allow repair work to be
completed at the council’s
service centre in Rangiora.
The artwork is a
reproduction of a1905
Canterbury Times photograph
recording the British governorgeneral,
Lord Plunket, and his
wife, Lady Plunket, meeting
with Tuahuriri kaumatua at
Tuahiwi.
The reproduction is the
fourth version of the artwork,
which are all in permanent
collections.
The work will will remain on
show in the Chamber Gallery
until March 5.
From Page 1
The coursetookshape overthe past year,and
was finished during afrantic couple of months
leading into the event.
‘‘We weredoing hugehours to get the track
sorted, and to organise the event.
‘‘There was alot more involved than I
thought there would be,’’ Liam says.
It all went according to plan on the day,due
mainly to his parentsallowing him to use half
theirpaddocks to build the course, he says.
Sponsors swung in behind the event,
helping withthe groundwork and
infrastructure, and through donations to help
run the event and providingtrophies.
Liam says the eventwill be backnext year,
with afew minor changesand alarger
Worry over water reforms
From Page 1
Mrs Black says the water unit might
simply change the colour of their
shirts and move down the corridor
to work under anew authority. But
there could also be more
substantial changes.
The governing authority would
likely be citybased, and those with
issues in the far flung Hurunui
rural district might be avoice in
the wilderness.
Mr Dobbie says he does not fear a
loss of jobs, as schemes still have to
be run. However, he questions
whether the current level of
service will remain, and at what
cost.
‘‘Will it be better?’’ he asks.
Mrs Black says there is ahuge
amount of trust between
landowners and the council’s water
staff. They knew to shut gates, and
about washing their vehicles
before entering properties to stop
the spread of pests such as Chilean
Surplus gear
NorthCanterbury Ridingfor the
equipment.
ChairwomanLin Bisman said
the February13sale at its
Millton Ave base in Rangiora
raised $557.
‘‘There were no prices on
anything and, as you can
imagine, some people were
incredibly generous paying
more thanthey needed to for
things that were really worth
very little, and others got an
absolute bargain for acoupleof
dollars.Swingsand roundabouts,
but we were delighted
with the result and it cleared a
lot of our surplus gearout.''
Its next fundraiserwill be its
annual horse trek on March 7.
‘‘Theride will takeinthe
stunning Mt Lowry homestead
and the Okuku River, and will be
led by renowned horseman
Lyndon Morris.’’
Tickets, which cost $50 and
include morning and afternoon
tea, can be bought at Rangiora
Equestrian Supplies,in
LinesideRoad, or by goingtothe
NCRDAFacebook pagefor
more details.
NCRDAisalso planning an
opshop style sale at its basein
midApril, focusingonpreloved
clothing,with food also on offer.
RDA volunteers are sought.
needle grass.
She says this trust could be
watered down if staff were not
local. She also fears any problems
in remote areas might be put on the
back burner while water staff deal
with acity issue affecting more
people.
This had the potential to leave
farmers and stock in desperate
situations.
March will clarify the structure
of the governing body, based on the
Scottish model of water delivery
and disposal.
New Zealand could be divided
into about five regions, loosely
based on the present Super Rugby
franchises.
Mr Dobbie says there have
already been rumblings from one
large metropolitan area that says it
won’t embrace the reforms.
At first councils could opt in.
Now, they have to opt out.
‘‘The big boys need to be in it to
make it work,’’ he says.
Louise waited years for diagnosis
Louise Davy is determined not to let arare disease limit
howshe livesher life. She shares her story with Robyn
Bristow ahead of Rare Disease DayonSunday.
Rangiora’sLouise Davy was
told her health problems were
all in her head by aGP.
For more thanthree decades
she battled debilitating
migraines, dizziness,nausea,
and had difficulties with
balance.
At 37, after her brother paid
for her to see aneurologist, she
was diagnosedwith Episodic
Ataxia Type 2, acondition that
impairs movement.
People experience episodes
of poor coordination and or
balance (ataxia), which can last
several hours.They can have
difficulty speaking,double
vision, ringing in theirears,
muscle tremors, and
temporaryparalysis.
Episodes can be triggered by
external factors such as stress,
medication, fever, physical
exertion, caffeine, and alcohol.
It is believed to affectone in
100,000 people worldwide.
Louise is amember of the
Muscular Dystrophy
Association of New Zealand’s
Canterbury branch, and has
been told by the Neuromuscular
Disease Registrythat
she is the only Kiwi registered
withthe condition.
Louise, ateacher at
Southbrook School, is speaking
out about her rare disease,as
she feels she needs to advocate
for those with hidden diseases,
and to stop peoplefrom
judging thembecausethey are
not aware of whatthey are
living with. This includes using
disabledpeople’s car parks.
Louise clearlyremembersas
an 8yearold feelingdizzy and
thinking she was going to be
sick. By 12 she was
misdiagnosedwith migraines.
Medicationdidn’t help.
‘‘I had blurry vision, Iwas
vomiting, unable to walk
straight. It was likeIwas
drunk.But migraine
medicationdidn’thelp. The
only thing that helpedwas
sleep, and letting the body
repair itself.’’
By the time she reached high
school she washavingthree
days off aweek on average
becauseshe was so sick.
As ayoung solo motherwith
two childrenshe became quite
introverted, and continuedto
fight increasing episodes. She
gave up on doctors, and when
she returned to teaching she
had areliever on standby,
along withher mum, who
would comeand pick her up
and takeher home whenan
episodehappened.
AGPrefused to refer her to
aneurological specialist
throughthe public system
becauseitwas supposedly
wasting aspecialist’s time.
Instead, he suggestedshe
needed apsychiatrist.
Eventually helpcame,
thankstoher brother, whopaid
for her to visit aneurologist. A
run around the park requested
by him during her consultation
brought on the symptoms, and
from there Louise’s life took a
turn for the better.
Medication helped her
episodic ataxia, alongwith
adviceonhow to avoid stress—
the main trigger of her disease.
She changed GPs whenhe
diagnosis for her illness.
refused to renewher scriptfor
the medication, believing the
disease was too rarefor Louise
to have it.
‘‘My mum was my biggest
supporter. She could see it
wasn’t in my head. She
believed in me,’’ Louise says.
Today, her children, Ben and
Jo, and her now husband, Pete,
are her greatest support,along
with an international
Facebookgroup.
‘‘Initially, Iasked lots of
Concerns over quarry'seffects on wells
By ROBYN BRISTOW
There is potential for groundwatertobe
contaminated from the proposed quarry
at Rangioraracecourse, opponents were
told at ameeting thisweek.
Residents attendingaStop the Quarry
meeting on Tuesdaynight learned the
proposed quarry was within the
Drinking Water ProtectionZonesfor
Rangiora.
The zones protect severallocal wells,
and bores. The bores supply Rangiora’s
backup and emergencywater supplies.
JohnMather, who has facilitated
several meetings of residents, said the
paper, presented to the opponents,
outlinedthe significanceofthe
protection zones.
The Taggart application to ECan and
the Waimakariri District Council for the
quarry at the racecourse had a
‘‘worrying lackofcompliance’’ with
guidelines on disposal of class 5
material which wouldbeused to fill
areas excavated for gravel, it said.
‘‘The excavated areathen effectively
becomesalandfill, as the excavated
area is backfilled withclass 5material
sourcedfrom elsewhere,’’ the paper
said.
It raisedconcerns aboutthe backfill
containing unidentifiedcontaminated
material which could leach into
groundwater,with a‘‘consequentialrisk
of contaminationofnearbybores and
the backup/emergency watersupplies
for Rangiora’’.
Opponents are concerned at the large
amount of imported material that would
be required, some of whichcould
potentially be contaminated.
Momentum builds
for dark sky project
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Adark sky projectinKaikoura,if
successful, could provide aprecious
winter boost to tourism operators.
It will also be alegacy to the work of
the North Canterbury Transport
InfrastructureRecovery team(NCTIR).
AKaikoura Dark Sky Reserve
Working Grouphas takenoverfrom
NCTIRtolead aproject establishinga
dark sky reserve above Kaikoura,
bringing to life the vision of its project
manager, Tony Gallagher.
About50people attended a
presentation on the concept recently,
wherework already done on thereserve
was outlined along with what regulatory
toolsmight be needed to protectthe
nightsky from light pollution.
Working groupleader Nicky
McArthur said the presentation was
aimedatgetting community support,
finding funding options, and looking at
what tools might be neededtohelp
darken the skiesbystemming the flow
of light from the town.
She saysastrotourism opportunities
wouldbehigh during the winter, which
is traditionally theoff seasonfor
tourism in Kaikoura.
This would boostthe local economy
and highlight thecultural significance
of Matariki and Maorilore.
‘‘Kaikoura has the opportunity to
make the mostofdark sky tourism, with
aunique story of mountains to thesea,
and to the sky,’’she says.
Apreapplicationhas already been
lodged withthe InternationalDarkSky
Association (IDA), and movesare afoot
to prepareamain application.
Nicky says the concept has been given
aboost by NCTIR, whichfunded three
monitors.Resultshave already shown
there is ‘‘some outstanding darkness’’.
The councilsupports the projectin
principle, and there is growing support
in the community.
The Royal Astronomical Societyof
New Zealand, the University of
Canterbury and the IDA are alsobehind
the project.
Nicky saysthere is an urgency to push
on with the projectand lobby the
council to considerregulations on
lightingwhen subdivision plans and
building activity arelodged with the
local authority.
She says the dark sky concept goes
beyondthe enjoyment that humans
would get fromareserve.
‘‘Nocturnal species are threatened by
light pollution and many arefacing
extinction. Losing our mothsand
insects fromthe bottomofthe food web
is havinghuge impacts worldwide,’’
Nicky says.
The presentation, hosted by the
working party and the Kaikoura
Museum, started with ashort slide show
from the evolving working group of
Nicky,DrLarry Field and Will Doughty,
who is Kaikoura’s new chief executive.
Guest speakers included Kyra Xavia,
aresearcher, writer, and dark sky
advocate basedinDunedin; andJohn
Hearnshaw, aNew Zealand astronomer
and Emeritus Professor of Astronomy at
the University of Canterbury.
Nicky says adark sky reservedoes not
mean ‘‘we are going to be in the dark’’.
Befriend a
tree,give
it adrink
By SHELLEY TOPP
Waimakariri residents are being
encouraged to water trees on the
berms outside their properties
during hot, dry weather.
Although the Waimakariri District
Council does watering rounds
during the summer, it is asking
residents to help by also watering
the trees.
‘‘If you have astreet tree outside
your house we would love it if you
could give it adrink,’’ council parks
community assets officer Greg
Barnard says.
‘‘Any water you can give the trees
will help them get through the hot,
dry summer.
‘‘A bucket of water every three or
four days will make all the
difference,’’ he says.
It is particularly important to keep
young trees well irrigated while they
are still getting established.
‘‘Once established, trees provide
added value to nearby properties
and are an important part of urban
life,’’ he says.
This is because they are
aesthetically pleasing, purify the air
by absorbing carbon dioxide and
releasing oxygen back into the
environment, provide shade and
sound barriers, help create
ecosystems to provide habitat for
birds and insects, reduce runoff, and
absorb pollutants.
Could cameras ease
community concerns?
By this time of year manyofour New
Year’s resolutions are starting to drop
off as they compete with other demands
on our timeand energy.
I’m determined to run afull marathon,
my first, in 2021 and Iwould appreciate
tips from the runners out there. My
motivationistohave atangible goal to
encouragemetoget back in shape.You
will be able to follow my training over
the year on Facebook.
Ihad to return to Wellington urgently
as our countryfaced the latest Covid19
threat.We’reall relieved to returnto
alertlevel1,but it’s areminder to not be
complacent. Ijoined my fellowMPs in
Parliament to look at how we can
support businesses affected by Covid19
resurgences.
It’s important we limit the economic
and socialimpacts of the pandemic
whilekeeping communities safe.
Legislation suchasthe Covid
ResurgenceSupport Paymentbill adds
another layerofreassurancefor
employees and business owners as we
prepare for further changes in alert
levels in our fight against thepandemic.
In my last column,Iwroteabout an
increase in concernsthat our
communities are seeing more antisocial
behaviour. Ibelieve that a
communityled initiative that is making
Hurunui communities feel safer could
help Waimakariri residents.
From ameetingwith local police, I
came away with information about
communityled camera technology
across Hurunui District thathas helped
reduce antisocial behaviour and
increasecommunitysafety.
Imet with Hurunui Mayor Marie
Blacktohear more and was impressed
by how communities, businessesand a
software provider worked together to
covereven the most isolated areas.
In theWaimakariri, we are fortunate
to have our bridges to thenorth and
south, making idealvantagepoints for
communityled camera technology.
Mariegave me several examples of
whereHurunui’s camerashad resulted
in the swift returnofstolen items.This
is acommunity conversation Ithink
many residents would be interested in
joining. I’d love to hear yourthoughts.
This weekIjoined my fellow
Canterbury MPs in standing together on
the 10th anniversaryofthe 2011
earthquakes to pay tribute to those who
lost their lives, andtohonour our
emergencyservicesand private citizens
who helped others. They will be forever
in our hearts and minds.
Waimakariri
Focus from Dan Gordon, Mayor
Resilienceonshow
Thisweek we remember 10 yearsonfrom
the February Christchurch earthquakes
thatsadly claimed 185 livesand injured
manymore.
Ihad the honour to represent our
community at the memorialserviceand
lay awreath in remembrance.
Lastyear we also recognised10years on
fromWaimakariri’sown Septemberquake
and at the time reflected on how far we
havecome as acommunity.
While earthquake anniversariesare
solemn occasions, the majorityofevents
I’vehad thepleasure of being invited to
lately havebeen marking milestones,
rebuilds,orare otherwise atestimony to
resilience.
On SundayIofficially reopenedthe
Kaiapoi Gray RavenScout building. It is
hometothe oldestscoutgroup in New
Zealand, established 112 years ago.
It is wonderful to see this building
reborn after the earthquake anditis
lookingfantastic. Well done to all the team,
but aparticularacknowledgement to
Group Leader Chris Thompsonfor his
leadership and the generosityand support
of so many that have helped get the
building fit to be reopened.
The weekend also recognised another
significant milestone for the Sutherland
family, which celebrated 100 yearsin
business.
Sutherland Timber and KaiapoiITM are
businesseswell known in Waimakariri.
CongratulationstoMurray, Annie, Jonnie,
Davie and Amy on achievingthis milestone
and for yoursignificantcontribution to our
local economy and community.
Hinemoa KaiapoiHockey Club also
celebrated 125 years afew weeksago. It is
the oldesthockey club in New Zealand. I
really enjoyed attending the club’s
celebrations. It’s great to see the club still
going strong.
On WaitangiDay we opened the new
softball diamonds at Norman Kirk Park.
The development of this, andthe wider
park, are crucial to theregenerationof
Kaiapoi. It is exciting to see the new park
almost complete and it is hoped the
community can enjoy allthe new facilities,
fromthe BMX track to the dog park, tothe
new diamonds.
Kaiapoi Softball Club is an important
partofthe local sporting community. With
180 members, thislevel of support is
impressive.
As part of the openingIhad theprivilege
to throw the first ball. Thankfully, it went
in the right directionand apparently I
threw astrike on the inside curve! (I am
still trying to decipher what this means).
We are fortunatetohave strong sports
teams and arange of sportingevents in
which to participate or enjoyasa
spectator. Thankstoall involved for their
commitment to sport in Waimakariri and
Wayward wheeler to speak
By SHELLEY TOPP
Epic paraplegic traveller Eamon
Wood, also known as The Wayward
Wheeler, is aguest speaker at the
Kaiapoi Library next month.
The Christchurch author of A
Backpack, aChair and aBeard will
backpacking around the South Island
of New Zealand, Britain, the United
States and the fjords and lakes of
Europe.
At 28, Eamon had afull life working
as an engineer and in sport as an elite
athlete who had represented New
Zealand at wheelchair tennis and
basketball.
But he wanted to push himself
further to achieve more from life.
He travelled solo during his New
Zealand and overseas adventures,
often slept rough and at times his
journey was mentally and physically
exhausting, but for him that was the
best part.
Eamon has been aparaplegic since
he was aged 4and has found exercise
to be agreat antidote for depression.
He loves to push himself mentally
and physically. He has learnt that,
with this positive mindset, his
wheelchair is no hindrance to
whatever he wants to do.
Eamon will be at the library next
Pool parties ahit
It has been an endless summer for the
community pools in Hurunui.
It is the fourth summer that the
Hurunui District Council has hosted a
series of pool parties at school and
community swimming pools around the
district.
Council community team leader Rhea
Duffy said pool parties were all about
hours of fun, music, games, and a
sausage sizzle —all in the name of
keeping the boredom at bay towards the
end of the school holidays.
“And it gives council staff the
opportunity to connect with different
members of our community in arelaxed
environment –and not at ameeting
around atable.”
In total, 11 pool parties were held,
with Waikari and Omihi hosting them for
the first time.
Pool parties are thirsty and hungry
work, with more than 950 sausages
consumed, more than 50 loaves of bread
eaten, five litres of tomato sauce needed,
and numerous fruit and vege sticks
enjoyed.
Amberley and Rotherham had the
highest attendance rates, followed
closely by Hawarden.
Community feedback was hugely
positive, with those in the district
grateful for some extra summer fun for
young people.

Shows part of the McLean DNA
By DAVID HILL
Waiaufarmers Don and Annie McLean
are looking forward to serving as copresidents
at the 105thAmuri A&P Show
at the Rotherham Showgrounds on
Saturday, March 6.
Don has beenassociated with A&P
showshis entirelife.
“It’salwaysbeen an importantpart of
family lifeand it’s agreat way for the
community to come together and catch up
with each other,’’ he says.
Asecond generationshowpresident,
Don followsinthe footsteps of his father,
Stuart, whowas Amuri show president in
the 1980s.
Stuart and Jan McLean, who are now in
their80s, havehad alongassociation with
the show.
Stuart is planning to compete in the dog
trials again this year, while Jan continues
with her love of entering displays in the
floral section.
Don and Annie’s threechildren, Ben,
Tom and Millie, are carrying on the family
enthusiasmfor the show and will all be on
hand to helpand participate, including a
little familyrivalry in thepet dog section.
Ben farms in PortLevy,onBanks
Peninsula, and Tom farms in Gisborne,
while Millieisavaluer in Christchurch.
The McLean family farm is 10kmfrom
Waiau. It runs3000 ewes, plus
replacements andyoungstock,which are
finished under irrigation.
The flock has aWaireriRomney base
and has alambingpercentageofabout
145%.
“It works well. The Waireri Romneyisa
very easycareanimal, they’regood sheep
and the fertility is very good,” Don says.
‘‘They’re avery robust sheep and they
seem to keepthemselves in good condition
and reartheir lambs very well.’’
AngusHerefordcross cows are also run
on the property and mated with Angus
bulls, while Charolais bulls have recently
been introduced as terminal sires.
Annie also works in the area as areal
estate agentwith Harcourts Hanmer
Springs, having previously worked in
health administrationand as an
earthquake support navigator.
The Amuri show district takesinanarea
with diverse communities, Donsays.
‘‘Culverden and Rotherhamhave more
dairy farming and HanmerSprings has the
tourismand outdooradventure, whereas
Waiau is your more traditionalsheep
farmingarea.
‘‘Waiauwas hugelyimpactedbythe 2016
earthquake and that was also agreat
example of the community pulling
together and watching out for eachother.’’
This year’s show will feature awool
showcase organised by Cheviot farmer
LyndaDicksonand apetting zoo.
“There is often talk about therural/
urbandivide and at the Amuri show we
are very aware of that, soit’s an
opportunity to make it an enjoyable and
educational day for the people who aren’t
closely involved in the rural way of life,”
Don says.
‘‘We’ve been going for 105 years and the
showisgetting stronger and stronger.
‘‘It’s quite abig day now and the
showgrounds are packedwith people and
theyall have agreatday out.’’
The McLeans wish to thanksecretary
Kim Balcombe and treasurer Meg
Macfarlanefor the show work they
undertake.
Theyalso wish to acknowledge the
supportofthe sponsors, tradespeople,
judges, marshalls, stewards, section heads
and volunteers, including Duncan
Macfarlane, who keeps the showgrounds
in pristinecondition.
There is an amazingcommitteethat
draws on yearsofexperience coupledwith
fresh ideas and new enthusiasm,Don says.
Wool’sversatility to be showcased
By DAVID HILL
Wool willfeatureatthe Amuri A&P Show
next month.
Cheviotfarmer Lynda Dickson will be
taking her wool showcase to the
Rotherham Showgrounds on Saturday,
March6.
‘‘It’s very important, especially the way
the wool industry is at the moment,’’ show
president Don McLean says.
‘‘The more information that getsout into
the public arenathe better to promote the
benefits of woolversussynthetics, with
wool being the moresustainable.’’
Mrs Dickson has developedher wool
showcase in partnership with the North
CanterburyVeterinaryClinic.Ithas
featured at the Cheviot A&P Show in recent
years and at the Amberley A&P Show last
October.
‘‘One of the mainreasons for doing this is
to get peoplethinking about the adverse
effect synthetic products are havingonour
environmentand how wooland other
naturalfibres, that are biodegradableand
renewable,can replace synthetics and
plastics or oilbasedproducts.
‘‘It’s been areally cool project to do
becausewhen you approach peoplethey
are really enthusiastic,’’ Mrs Dickson says.
The display willfeature thediversityof
wool products suchasinthe home, clothing
and anumber of other practical uses.
‘‘There’s awide range of uses so we
encourage people to come along and have
alook at what you can do with wool,’’ she
says.
‘‘Wool is really starting to makea
comeback and it’s biodegradable, so it
breaks down quite quickly, unlikeother
products, making it agood alternative to
plastics, and we will have adisplayofthat.’’
even lower micron fleeces have multiple
uses.
‘‘We just need to keep getting the word
out there that it’s renewable and we keep
growing it every year,’’ Mrs Dicksonsays.
‘‘And it breaks downatthe end of itslife
cycle,soyou can put yourpure wool
product in the garden at the end of its life
and it breaks down and puts nutrients back
into the soil.’’
Sisters deliver recipe for success
By DAVID HILL
The ‘‘Two Raw Sisters’’ are looking
forward to returning to the Amuri A&P
Show on Saturday, March 6.
Like so many Cantabrians,
Christchurch siblings Rosa and Margo
Flanagan had their plans thrown into
turmoil by Covid19 after performing
their cooking demonstration at last
year’s Amuri A&P Show.
The pair were due to fly out to
Melbourne and to the United States in
March last year, but instead retreated to
their parents’ kitchen to produce online
workshops.
Over the next two months, the sisters
have afull schedule of A&P shows to
visit, should New Zealand remain at
alert level 1.
‘‘It was great. We love doing these sort
of shows,’’ says Margo, recalling last
year’s visit to the Rotherham
Showgrounds.
‘‘It was quite funny returning to mum
and dad’s last year, because it was
where we started.
‘‘We kept ourselves busy testing out
recipes and everyone was really good
and really responsive to the online stuff.
‘‘We enjoyed the online workshops,
but we are looking forward to seeing
people rather than looking at the screen,
which is abit boring sometimes.’’
Since performing at last year’s Amuri
A&P Show, the sisters have published
their second book, All Eaters Welcome,
and they are already working on their
third book.
‘‘The plantbased movement is
definitely becoming more of athing, but
we want to reach out to all eaters,’’
Margo says.
‘‘It’s about starting your meals with
vegetables and then you can add meat if
you want.
All eaters welcome ... The
Raw Sisters, from left, Rosa
and Margo Flanagan, will be
back at the Amuri A&P Show.
PHOTO: FILE
‘‘Our recipes explore fun and exiting
ways to use those pantry staples and to
show people how delicious plants can
be.’’
The sisters will be giving a
demonstration at 2pm at the show with
two recipes: Apear, ginger and peanut
butter bircher and abroccoli,
buckwheat and sesame salad.
‘‘They are perfect for taking to work or
for when you are entertaining,’’ Margo
says.
‘‘And we will be looking at substituting
ingredients. People often come to a
recipe and get stressed out about it
because they can’t find all the
ingredients, so it’s about being flexible
—one recipe can become 20 recipes.’’
By DAVID HILL
AChristchurchbased trick rider is sure
to thrill the crowd at lunchtime during
the Amuri A&P Show on March 6.
Sonia Duncan, who has appeared in
blockbuster movies as astunt double,
will ride in the main ring after
president Don McLean’s address at
about 12.30pm.
Sonia took up trick riding more than
25 years ago, when at the age of 29 she
was getting bored with simply riding
her horses. She saw anewspaper
advertisement which said: ‘‘Stunt
riders wanted —have you got what it
takes?’’
‘‘I decided to give it ago. Iwent along,
got trained up and became part of a
Wild West live show.’’
Sonia went on to work as astunt
double for Hollywood actor Liv Tyler in
Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, The Lord
of the Rings.
Working days while on the set started
early, with wardrobe and makeup.
Then there would be the ‘‘hurry up and
wait’’ phase.
‘‘We would be told to hurry to the set.
Once there, we would wait. Sometimes
we would wait all day and not shoot a
scene,’’ Sonia says.
Being astunt double horse rider
requires patience, she says.
‘‘It was pretty basic stuff, cantering on
the horse, stopping on cue and jumping
off in along dress.’’
Stunt horses need to be taught to
canter in astraight line and not to stop
until asked.
Over time the horse gets used to the
rider hanging off either side while
cantering.
‘‘Just working with the horses all the
time and getting them to run in a
straight line is the key,’’ Sonia says.
Impressive skills ... Sonia Duncan’s riding skills will be on
display.
Club offers awarm, welcoming atmosphere
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Nearly 30 years ago the Darnley
Clubbegan providing quality
daycare for elderly folk.
It initiallybegan in the Kaiapoi
Working Men’s Club one day a
week.
Today, it has grown to afivedayaweekoperation
at its own
premises in the Kaiapoi
Community Centre,formerly
known as the St Paul’s Centre.
There is afulltime coordinator,
parttime office
worker and activitiesorganiser, a
parttime personal carer, parttimecook,
and two mini bus
drivers, alongside 27 volunteers.
The Kaiapoi Daycentre for
Seniors Inc, known as the
DarnleyClub, grew out of
concern for older people,
particularlythoseliving alone,
who longed for company,
fellowshipand good food.
Anumberofolder people from
Kaiapoi were going to aRangiora
resthome for daycare. However,
the facility could cope onlywith a
set numberofpeople,and those
wantingthe servicewas growing.
DarnleyClub secretaryGill
Rayner saysaworkinggroup set
about setting up asimilar
ventureinKaiapoi, finding a
venue, and developing a
programme.
It opened on May 16, 1991.
The club celebratesits 30th
birthday in May this year.
The club has 57 ‘‘friends’’
(clients),most of whom are
funded by the Canterbury
DistrictHealthBoard, with
which the centrehas acontract.
Up to 18 ‘‘friends’’ are catered
for each day with the aim of
providing somewhere for those
living alonetogofor company, a
place for those who have been ill
to get supportand fellowship,
and for familyand carers to have
somewhere to leavetheir loved
ones while theytake some time
out.
‘‘Our elderly folk are pickedup
in ourown minibus each
morningfrom Clarkville, the
beach communities, Kaiapoi,
Tuahiwiand Belfast, and are
taken home at 3pm.
‘‘Theyenjoyahomebaked
well as afternoon tea.’’
Gill has beensecretary for 25
years. ‘‘I am part of the furniture.
Ilove it (theclub), and Ienjoyit,’’
she says.
CoordinatorDawn Armitage
says the elderly folk enjoy a
relaxing day of companionship
and laughter, in awarm and
caringenvironment,takingpart
in themany activities such as
crafts, games, quizzes,
physiotherapist exercises,
outingsand entertainment.
Dawn, who took overthe coordinator
role fromChris
Greengrass in 2014,says it is a
wonderful place to work.
‘‘It is areally warm,friendly
place where we have alot of fun,
and where thereisalot of
friendshipand warmth, good
food, fun activities, and outings.’’
Dawn says the clubisgreatfor
those livingalone who do not see
anybody fromone day to the next,
or for carers and family to geta
Companionship ... Members of the Darnley Club enjoy high tea.
littlebit of respite.
‘‘It means alot of thingstoa
whole lot of people,’’ she says.
Duringthe lockdown, when the
club had to closeoperations, staff
and volunteers kept in touch with
members withregular phone
calls,and made sure they had
meals and no worries.
‘‘It was just someonethere for
them, that cared and could offer
ahand of friendship.’’
The club enjoys strong
community support, and backing
from everyone from politicians to
volunteerswho sell theirtwo
strength, mobilityand fitness.
They are suited to all fitness levels, and
those attendingcan go at their own pace,
with exercises modified for injuriesand
medicalconditions,including arthritis
and osteoporosis.
Those attending often head off to alocal
Laura says classes in NorthCanterbury
are wellattended because it is agreat way
to exercise, have fun, and meet people.
The classes are pitched at the older
young, fit people.This makes themfeel
Classesare run fromKaikoura to
Natural wonders ... The Waimakariri District Council is working on its policy around significant natural areas.
Council examines its SNA policy
By DAVID HILL
Affectedlandownersare being
encouraged to give theirviews on policy
around significant natural areas(SNA).
The Waimakariri District Council, as
part of its ongoing District Plan Review, is
contacting the owners of properties
identified to have SNAs.
SNAs are areas of vegetation thathave
high biodiversity values and are important
for preventing the extinction of rare
species and ecosystems in the district.
Councils are required to identify and
protect such areas under the Resource
ManagementAct.
The processofidentifying SNAs on
private land has proventobecontentious
in some partsofNew Zealand, largely
becauseofthe restrictionsonland use
that can be associatedwith the
classification.
The full details of the rules and
incentives around SNAs will be publicly
available when the Proposed District Plan
is notified later this year.
The public will be invited to make
submissions.
However, the council hopes to enter into
discussionswith landowners much
earlier, development planning manager
Trevor Ellis says.
‘‘We appreciatethat many SNAsexist
and continue to survive, thanks to the
effortsofgenerations of locallandowners
who have valuedand looked after them,’’
Mr Ellissays.
‘‘We want to work collaboratively with
landowners to workthrough their
concerns and make sure the important
ecological values of these areas are
maintained.’’
Landownerswill be contacted in stages,
starting withthose who already havean
SNA listed in the existingDistrict Plan or
anew SNA identified throughafieldvisit.
Landownerswith other new SNAswill
be contacted later in the year in order to
PHOTO: FILE
providemore time to work throughthe
information, Mr Ellis says.
‘‘It’s importanttousthat we get out there
and talk to landowners facetoface.
‘‘This willgive us the best chance to
workthrough any concerns before the
proposed DistrictPlan is released.’’
The proposed DistrictPlan willcontain
rules abouthow an areaofland that
contains an SNA can be developed and
used.
Thiswill include limits on indigenous
vegetationclearance, while stillallowing
for some maintenance activitiessuch as
fence and trackupkeep.
Mr Ellis says the council is alsolooking
at ways it can provide incentivesto
landowners who provide protection for
their SNA.
Sefton chases down an imposing
tally for an impressive home win
An ultraaggressive Seftonchased down an
imposing OxfordRangiora total in the latest
roundofcountry cricket on Saturday.
More than500 runswere scored at Sefton
Domain as the home sidegot the points,
whiletherewere also winsfor competition
rivals LeestonSouthbridge,Weedonsand
Cheviotinthe CRV AmbreedCountry
Premier One Day 2020/21 competition.
OxfordRangiora batted first and made
267/6in45overs, thankslargely to aswashbuckling
innings fromLukeWaghorn.
Waghorn clubbed Seftonfor 90 runsoff 47
balls, including five sixes and seven fours. He
was well supported by opener Calvin Scott
(54 runsoff 87 balls),LachieStove(46 off 55)
and Dave Fulton’sunbeaten 44 off 59.
Chasing the highscore, Sefton got off to a
perfect startwith McKenzie Smith (54 off 44)
and Chris Warner(70 off 78)compilinga
century opening stand.
Canterbury seam bowler FraserSheat,
batting at No. 4, then smashed 72 off 48 balls,
combining withMatt Laffey, who made an
unbeaten 64, in an unbroken 118run
partnership to claim adominant eightwicket
win with four overs to spare.
Southbrook falters
At Weedons Domain, Southbrook paceman
Jono Green baggedfive wicketsashis side
bowled out the homeside for just 171.
Former Canterbury wicketkeeper Paul
Ruggshowed he has still got the touch, topscoring
with an unbeaten 35.
Southbrook got off to asolid start in its
chase, and was sitting prettywith former
Black Cap Shanan Stewart and Jack Boyle,
returningfrom Canterbury duties and along
Super Smashcampaign, bothatthe crease.
But when they fellrelatively cheaply, in
quick succession, Southbrook’s hunt for just
its second win of the season faltered, and
eventually fell 15 runs short.
Hamish D’Arcy did the mostdamage with
the white ball, returning the fine figuresof
5/37.
Thumping
Cheviot thumped Lincolnonhome soil on
Saturday, thankstoabrilliant century from
Ted Whelan.
Whelan’stopscore of 136 off 124 ballslifted
the Magpies to 288 against Lincoln, despite a
sixwicket bag for Hugh Paterson.
Paterson also shone with the bat, falling
justshortofahalfcentury, as did his brother
Arthur, but their teammates didn’t offer
muchsupportand felltoa105run loss inside
35 overs.
Dominant display
At Darfield Domain, the home sidecouldn’t
takeadvantage of batting first, despite afine
45 fromopener Liam Foulkes.
Foulkesmade alonestand, with the only
other meaningfulcontribution being 24 from
CullenMoody.
As theyhave done all season, all of
LeestonSouthbridge’s bowlersperformed
well, withDougald Munro’s tidy mediumpacers
the pickofthe bunch, finishing with
2/16off his nine overs.
BraydenHill(32 off 62) and Harry
Chamberlain(34 off 35), returning from a
successfulstint with Canterbury A, set up the
New Tsunami Evacuation Zones
for Waimakariri
Council has updated tsunami evacuation zones in
response to modelling that showed flooding from
atsunami could travel further inland than
previously thought.
The District now has three tsunami evacuation
zones: red, orange and yellow, and the Council is
encouraging residents to visit the website and
learn more about the zones. The new tsunami
evacuation zones will be reflected inLand
Information Memorandums (LIMs).
While the red evacuation zone has only seen minor
changes, it’s the most likely to be affected by a
tsunami. It covers estuaries, beaches and rivers
which can experience strong currents and surges in
the water from tsunamis of any size.
The orange evacuation zone covers land that could
be flooded during large tsunamis and already
included the coastal settlements at The Pines
Beach, Kairaki, Woodend Beach and Waikuku
Beach. It has been revised to extend the length
of the coast and further inland.
The most notable change is the introduction of the
yellow evacuation zone, which covers large parts
of Kaiapoi and asection of Pegasus. This area is
least likely to be affected, but could be flooded or
isolated in avery large tsunami.
"The modelling is based on worst-case scenarios which
shows the yellowzone could potentially be flooded
in avery large tsunami from adistant source,” says
Emergency Management Advisor Brennan Wiremu.
“These events are rare and we’d have atleast
12 hours warning, so residents don’t need to be
alarmed, however they should have aplan for what
to do if they need to evacuate.”
The Council is working with the affected
communities and emergency services to develop
new tsunami response strategies.
Brennan says residents in the affected areas can
expect to receive information in their mailbox
about the tsunami zones shortly, which will be
followed bydrop-in sessions and opportunities for
people to ask questions.
Find out more and view amap of the new
evacuation zones at waimakariri.govt.nz/tsunami
Algal Bloom in Lake Pegasus
Canterbury District Health Board’s Community and
Public Health unit has reissued ahealth warning
aer potentially toxic blue-green algae (planktonic
cyanobacteria) was again found in Lake Pegasus
last week.
People and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid
Lake Pegasus until the health warning has been lied.
Make sure it’s safe toswim in rivers and lakes by
checking the water quality status and risk of toxic
algae before you head out. To check, jump onto the
LAWA website -this will give you the most recent
water testing results for key recreational areas in
our District.
“The Key of Knowledge ..“(Luke 11:52)
THE HOPE OF ISRAEL -HOPE
OF TRUE BIBLEBELIEVERS
What is our hope? Does it matter what we believe
concerning it? The Bible, being God’s word expressing
hope to mankind, reveals the REAL hope and not
something that has evolved through man’s desires.
Truth in the world can be as fake as anyone likes, but
God and his promises are unchanging and have been
instituted in Genesis. Learning of God, truth is critical to
our understanding.
If you are wondering about the meaning of life, this
presentation brings hope clearing the way through
cloudy religious teaching.
