Spectacular Peloponnese Exploration and Nature

• Monemvasia means “one entrance” and in fact the only access to this castle is via
a causeway. This uniquely preserved mediaeval town is carved into the majestic grey
rock like a sculpture. Peer into the history of the fortress –the so-called “Gibraltar of
the East”–, which was occupied by the Byzantines, the Crusaders, the Venetians,
and the Turks in the past. In the lower part of the town are the ruins of the historic
buildings among which the Muslim Mosque, a preserved 16th century building
housing the Archaeological Museum, as well as the magnificent Byzantine churches.
The (uninhabited) upper part of the town has the remains of old Byzantine buildings
and offers spectacular views to the Aegean Sea.
