• Monemvasia means “one entrance” <strong>and</strong> in fact the only access to this castle is via<br />
a causeway. This uniquely preserved mediaeval town is carved into the majestic grey<br />
rock like a sculpture. Peer into the history of the fortress –the so-called “Gibraltar of<br />
the East”–, which was occupied by the Byzantines, the Crusaders, the Venetians,<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Turks in the past. In the lower part of the town are the ruins of the historic<br />
buildings among which the Muslim Mosque, a preserved 16th century building<br />
housing the Archaeological Museum, as well as the magnificent Byzantine churches.<br />
The (uninhabited) upper part of the town has the remains of old Byzantine buildings<br />
<strong>and</strong> offers spectacular views to the Aegean Sea.
