Sightseeing Messini: One of the most impressive ancient sights still being excavated is that of Messini. The remains of this vast ancient city are as extensive as those of Olympia and Epidavros, yet Ancient Messini receives only a fraction of their visitors. The sight is picturesquely situated on a hillside below the village of Mavromati, the site comprises a large theatre, an agora (marketplace), a sizeable Sanctuary of Asclepius and one of the most stunning Ancient Greek stadiums. Very well worth a visit. Continue on to Pylos for your overnight stay. Coastal Pylos presides over the southern end of an immense bay. With its huge natural harbour that's formed by the Sfaktiria Islet, its castle and surrounding pine-covered hills, Pylos is not just picturesque, but is also one of the region's most historically significant towns.
