A REMINDER OF LIVES LOST
The wreckage of a fishing boat can be seen during a minus tide about 200 yards south of the south jetty of
Newport’s Yaquina Bay. The remains are believed to be that of the Amber Dawn II, a 43-foot crabbing vessel that
capsized in heavy seas on the night of Dec. 6, 1994 near the tip of the south jetty. All four people aboard lost their
lives. A couple of weeks later, a portion of the boat washed ashore. Heavy equipment was brought to the beach in
an effort to remove the wreckage from the surf, but the attempt was unsuccessful. It remains at the low tide mark,
buried in a considerable amount of sand. (Photo by Jeremy Burke)
