Welcome
As I write this, snow is falling outside! Hopefully
by the time you read it, Spring will be well and
truly in the air.
Many of us have spent more time gardening
during lockdown and we can’t wait to start
pottering again. Our friends at Floralands
Garden Centre have kindly donated two £50
vouchers for this month’s competition. Imagine
what you could do with that!
We are also spending more time cooking. Here
at NG HQ we love a challenge, so when Rehana
from Rajah Foods offered to share some of
her favourite recipes with us, we jumped at the
chance to cook them - and of course we have
shared them with you this month.
If a takeaway is more up your street then why
not enter our Spice competition and be in with a
chance of winning a £50 voucher. Good luck!
Happy reading
Ali , Cat & Sarah
Lockdown for Nottingham:
How are local sports clubs coping? Hannah Richardson investigates.
We are now in lockdown no.3,
and local sport clubs have had
to shut their doors again. We
have spoken to some local
clubs to find out how they are
managing.
Under the Tier 4 restrictions,
under 18s were able to do
outdoor sport and physical
activity and Nottingham
Outlaws, one of the UK’s oldest
BMX clubs, was able to carry on
holding training sessions. Annie
Chiziwa, Club Chairman, said;
“Luckily, children were exempt
from many of the restrictions
on exercise, so we were able to
run regular coaching and gate
training sessions.”
With all competitions cancelled,
Annie and the other volunteers
decided to put on their own
race series to raise club morale;
“After completing many
specific Covid risk assessments,
we were able to put on our
first club race since the first
lockdown. This was a real boost
to the club and riders. After
all, we train to race, and with
the national and regional races
cancelled for the whole of
2020, this was the opportunity
everyone had been working
towards.”
Unfortunately, Nottingham
Outlaws BMX Club is now
closed due to the current
national lockdown.
The committee at Notts
and Arnold Cricket Club are
continuing to meet via Zoom
to plan for the new season,
including the work required to
get their overseas player, Dilhan
Cooray, over from Sri Lanka. If
the guidelines allow, they will
be ready to start playing and
training outdoors in April.
Groundwork at the club and
preparation of cricket squares
is progressing within safety
guidelines.
Sherwood Cycling Club have
not been able to train as a full
group throughout Tier 4 and
can’t at all now we are in the
third lockdown. However, that
doesn’t mean the club aren’t
continuing to support members
throughout each lockdown.
Trevor Adams, Secretary of
Sherwood CC, said; “During
lockdown, we kept in touch
with members via our monthly
club newsletter, which is
e-mailed to members.
“We also have a club Strava
group, where members can
log their rides and they can
be seen by other members.
We have had a few Zoom
calls to discuss various issues
affecting members. This
proved challenging for some
of our older members, but
they have got used to the new
technology now, with a little
help and support from the rest
of us.”
Some, like Arnold Swimming
Club, where there isn’t really an
alternative option for training,
are engaging their members in
other ways. Club member Kelly
Bodycott said; “We are keeping
in touch ensuring everything
we know is communicated
to all. We’ve had a virtual quiz
night and are setting up a
virtual escape room. As none
of us are qualified to do Zoom
fitness classes, and swimming
isn’t like other sports where you
can continue in some form,
engaging with our members is
top of the agenda.”
Kelly is appealing to local
people to play the Gedling
Lotto and help support the club
during these challenging times.
Visit www.gedlinglotto.co.uk
for more information on how
you can help.
The Shudokan Black Belt
Academy, based on Haydn
Road in Sherwood have moved
online and are running Zoom
classes for all their groups daily.
Students can also book one to
one online sessions.
Founder of the Academy, Ken
Robson explained that the
club have developed an online
membership package that
includes motivational talks, one
to one sessions and even recipe
sharing. They are still recruiting
new members, which is great.
At the time of going to
press, it’s not clear when this
lockdown will end but as soon
as it does, sports clubs across
Nottingham will be raring to go.
Rehana’s Recipes
I have been shopping at Rajah
Foods in Sherwood for years.
I actually remember the shop
opening in 2013 and being
really excited. I love cooking
Asian food and was delighted
that I would no longer have
to travel far to load up on
the ingredients.
Rajah has a butchers at the
back of the shop and a great
selection of fresh fruit and veg,
as well as a mind boggling
array of herbs and spices,
rice and breads and snacks
and nibbles. And if you are
really, really lucky and time it
right you can also buy fresh,
homemade samosas and
pakora. But you have to be
quick. The minute they arrive
they are snapped up.
Apart from the fact that the
produce is really great value
and fantastic quality, buying
local has never been so
important and Rajah now also
offer a delivery service.
Owner and all-round lovely
lady, Rehana was delighted
to share three of her favourite
recipes with us this month.
They are all delicious and
easy to cook and you can
get everything you need from
Rajah Foods. Just a note
about the recipes – Rehana
uses a normal cup as a
measure. I used a small mug
for the lentils and Sarah used
an American cup measure
for the bhajis. As long as you
use the same cup for all parts
of the recipe you won’t go
far wrong.
Tadka Dal
(Red Lentil Soup)
PART ONE
1 cup – red lentils
½ medium onion – diced
1 medium tomato – diced
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger paste
1 tsp garlic paste
1 tsp chilli powder (optional)
3 whole green chillies
2 x bay leaves
3 dessert spoons sunfl ower oil
PART TWO
½ medium onion – diced
65g butter
1 tsp cumin seeds
5 x garlic cloves – crushed
Fresh coriander
Method
Wash lentils and place in a large
saucepan with 2 cups of boiling
water (if you want a thick dal) or
4 cups (if you want a soup).
Add salt, turmeric, garlic and
ginger pastes, oil, bay leaves
and whole chillies. Add the
tomato and onion and cook on a
medium heat for 12-15 mins with
the lid on, stirring occasionally.
If you are making dal you should
have a thick, custardy texture.
If making soup it will be much
runnier but the lentils should still
be cooked. Then set aside.
In a separate frying pan,
melt the butter. Add diced
onion, cumin and garlic and
cook gently until the onion is
caramelised and golden. Add
this mixture to the lentils and
mix. Simmer for a further 5
mins and garnish with chopped
coriander.
Delicious served with nan
bread and yogurt or as part of a
bigger meal.
Onion Bhaji
PART ONE
4 x medium onion - sliced (not
too thin/not too thick)
1 x large potato - cut into very
thin match sticks
2 x finely chopped green
chillies
One handfull of chopped
coriander
One handfull chopped
spinach
1 heaped tsp ginger paste
1 heaped tsp garlic paste
2 tsp fenugreek seeds
4 tsp curry powder
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp whole cumin seeds
PART TWO
4 x eggs (substitute for water
for vegans)
2 tsp salt
2 cups of gram flour
vegetable oil to fry (about
500ml)
Method
Using your hands (with a
disposable glove), mix all the
ingredients from part one for
3- 5 minutes until vegetables
are all covered with spices.
Add the eggs (or water) and
mix for 3-4 minutes. Add the
salt and mix. Add the gram
flour and mix well until you
get a sticky texture. Heat the
oil in a pan (we used a deep
frying pan). Wet your hands
with some water and mould
into golf ball size circles (do
not squash the mix or the
inside will become soggy) and
place carefully into the oil.
Reduce the heat if the oil gets
too hot. You need the bhaji to
cook inside as well. Crisp on
a medium/low heat for 5 to 8
minutes, until golden brown.
Tandoori
Chicken
1 tsp salt
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp garam masala
2 tsp garlic paste
2 tsp ginger paste
1 heaped tbsp tomato puree
Juice of 1 x lemon
8 tsp Pataks tikka spice
marinade
5 tbsp vegetable oil
2 heaped tbsp plain yogurt
900g-1400g chicken (wings or
boneless thighs or breast)
Method
Mix all the ingredients (apart
from the chicken) together in
a bowl to form a paste. Mix
the chicken into the paste.
Leave to marinade for at least
2 hours (overnight is best).
When ready to cook, place
under the grill, turning half
way through until the chicken
is fully cooked. This would
also be delicious on a BBQ.
We served with a yogurt and
mint dip and salad.

Work with us to help your local
community prosper.
The nursing team at
Scarsdale Vets offer you
some tips on keeping
your pet’s teeth in good
condition.
1. Feed them an appropriate diet. Rabbits and
herbivores need grass or hay to be 90% of their diet to
allow their teeth to wear. Dogs and cats need dry food
to crunch on and not just wet food. Dental treats are
high in sugar and fat so should be used sparingly.
2. Start them young. Most dogs and a lot of cats
will tolerate brushing their teeth if you start them as
puppies or kittens.
3. If you brush, do it every day. Apply a pea size
amount to the brush and slowly work your finger
around their mouth. Move your finger in small circular
motions around each tooth. Don’t forget the back
teeth. Praise and reward your pet once finished.
4. Watch them eat – early signs of dental disease or
mouth pain are subtle.
5. Not all dry foods are equal. Dental diets have larger
kibbles and a more fibrous consistency which is
better at keeping teeth clean.
6. Use an animal toothbrush and toothpaste. Minty
fresh breath may not appeal to your pet, but chicken
flavour toothpaste can help them tolerate brushing.
7. Get them checked: A vet or a nurse should check
your pet’s teeth every year.
8. Let them chew. Rabbits can gnaw on some sticks
and branches and there are various chews designed
for cats and dogs.
9. Check they have lost all their deciduous (baby)
teeth by 8 months.
10. Remember how important their teeth are. Dental
disease can lead to many other health problems,
including liver and kidney problems. Looking after
them will help your pet to live a longer happier life.
my journey is your journey
by My Journey - CIC (Community Interest Company)
Everyone has a journey. It could be a life journey,
a journey of love or a physical journey which may
well impact a part of your life. This is where the
name and idea came from for My Journey CIC.
A small, person focused specialist “journey” solution
that simply helps people access places, groups and
activities that mean something to them.
As our CIC is completely not for profit and as there
are no shareholders, all of the money people pay
us will contribute to local communities by both
improving the services we offer people and in the
future, by hosting community activities that are open
to all with little or no cost.
We know coronavirus has severely impacted the
lives of millions of people all over the world so we
wish to bring communities together, strengthen them
and show them how they can support each other.
We want connection, relationships and interactions
to flourish.
My Journey CIC is your journey. We hope it means
something different to everyone and we want to
meet as many people on our local transport as
possible.
To book a short journey to a community group, day
service, medical appointment or to enquire about
a whole group activity or visit somewhere further
afield, please do give us a call on 07707 336351 or
are you autistic?
by Autistic Nottingham
Autistic people communicate
differently to the general
population and have different
motivations and expectations
when interacting socially.
We experience our environment
differently: we may be over- or
under-sensitive to noise, light,
taste, smells, touch, proprioception and pain. We are
also experts in the things that interest us, the value
of which others may not comprehend.
However, the rest of the world doesn’t seem to
understand or appreciate this, so autistic people
think that they are either not trying hard enough to
integrate or they are failures. We become distressed
with having to put up with all the sensory clamour
in order to succeed in achieving our goals. We feel
frustrated that we can’t give enough time for our
interests because it seems everybody else’s priorities
are more important than our own.
We don’t get any support until we become a problem:
children with noticeable learning disabilities or
difficulties; adolescents with ‘challenging behaviours’;
adults with mental health or social problems.
Autistic Nottingham is run by autistic people. We
provide advocacy, support and connection for adults
who are struggling to find appropriate help when
dealing with public services that others take for
granted. Our advocacy team are skilled in ensuring
that you are taken seriously by gatekeepers to
support services. We provide a support network for
those who may feel judged by others for needing
support in what everybody else seems to cope with
naturally. We also offer opportunities to meet and
socialise with other autistic adults in a way that
autistic adults prefer and enjoy.
PREPARING FOR THE
FUTURE
by Helen Jones
It’s almost a year since the country went into the
first lockdown. In many ways it seems to have flown
by, but it has also proven to be the most challenging
period of many peoples’ lives.
Indeed, most of my friends and contacts believe that
things will never be quite the same again as we navigate
out of the pandemic.
In the news today it’s reported that the UK has met its
vaccination targets to date which is a huge boost to our
confidence that life can maybe go back to some sort of
new normality.
And new normality it will be.
Many companies are now considering remote working
as the best way to engage and retain staff for the
future. The pre pandemic 9 to 5 office based role is fast
becoming a dinosaur. Flexibility is the key and creating
a culture of trust where employees continue to feel
supported and valued from afar.
There is also an expectation from the new workforce
generation that we as employers play a more active
role in modern day debates and cultural issues. There is
simply no excuse any more for not looking at the bigger
picture – climate change and equality being two topics I
regularly come across in my involvement with schools.
There is also a need for continued digital fluency
and literacy. Data analytics and digital skills will
become ever more important for potential employers.
Technology is continuously being adopted to make
companies more productive, jobs healthier and increase
wellbeing. The reputational damage of not getting this
right will without doubt have consequences for many
employers who are reluctant to adapt.
The things about the ‘old normal’ (e.g. commuting,
work – home separation, after work socialising) that
now appear valuable in hindsight will set the bar for the
‘new normal’. We must find other ways to engage and
intentionally create these scenarios so that we still have
that sense of belonging in a different way.
“Trust the wait. Embrace the uncertainty. Enjoy the
beauty of becoming. When nothing is certain, anything
is possible.”
oo! that’s a bit racey!
by Claire Bale
Nottingham’s new blog
to open up conversations
that can change the
world.
On 15th August 2020, I
shyly published my first
blog post. I had a clear
vision for Oo! That’s a Bit
Racey! I wanted to create
a space where we could all talk about race in a way
that was open, honest and without judgement. To
make it clear that “race” doesn’t have to be a scary
word.
My head was spinning last Summer. As a mixed race
woman, everything I read about racial inequalities
resonated and made me determined to make
changes within my communities. I quickly learnt that
fear was holding us back.
Many of us are terrified of saying the wrong thing,
asking a question we feel we should already know
the answer to, or inadvertently offending someone.
We’re scared to even have a conversation about
race. Without conversation, there’s little learning; and
without learning, there’s no progress.
So, I committed to learning more and sharing my
journey. Hopefully, I’m inspiring others to learn
more too. To read books they may not have picked
up before. To hear from voices they wouldn’t
have listened to before. To reflect on their own
experiences. And most importantly, to talk about
race.
Everyone’s welcome to join me along the road, and
I’d love to hear from you.
If you have a question, a point of view, or an
experience you’d like to share, visit the blog,
street support nottingham - tackling homelessness
by Paul Scotting, Nottingham Homeless Voluntary Sector Forum
Looking for Homeless
Services in Nottingham?
To Find or Give Help
Go To:
streetsupport.net/nottingham/
In December 2020 more than 30 charities that support homeless people
across Nottinghamshire teamed up to launch Street Support Nottingham.
Numerous Nottingham City buses have carried banners advertising the
service and business cards carrying the site’s details accompanied copies
of the Big Issue and remain available at the front desk of every library within
the Nottingham urban area. The result of this initial publicity effort has been
remarkable, with over 1000 page views in the first month.
The business cards are the key to making Street Support Nottingham part
of the City’s culture. We want every single person who wants to help, to have
one of these cards tucked away in their wallet or phone. And we want every
single person who needs help to know that they can find it through Street
Support Nottingham. Donations and volunteers were already coming in via
the new website. We would like to thank the National Lottery and Boots for their support on launching the
scheme.
The scheme has the full support Nottingham City Council. Andrew Errington, Nottingham city’s Director of
Community Protection said “The site is comprehensive and easy to use … it will be an asset to helping those
sleeping rough… this will be a useful tool for agencies involved in supporting those facing homelessness and
getting them the right support as quickly as possible.”
Geraniums -
Easy plants for
difficult places
Hardy Geraniums are well-loved
plants: they’re easy to grow, give
great value in the garden and
there are varieties that do well in
the most difficult spots.
Commonly called cranesbills,
(due to the shape of their seed
pods), they are completely
different to the half-hardy
Pelargoniums which are also
commonly called geraniums.
Cranesbills come in many shapes
and sizes from tiny alpines to
large bushy plants. Most are
well-behaved and easy to care
for but beware there are invasive
types. Here are some of my
favourites for different locations.
For dry, sunny spots you can’t
do better than the bloodroot
geraniums (G. sanguineum) with
their ground-hugging stems. The
flowers are large and come in
many shades of pink and white.
One of the best is “Elke” with
exceptionally large silver-edged
pink flowers. I’d also recommend
“Striatum” (veined pink flowers),
“Glenluce” (lavender pink) and
“Album” (pure white). You can
cut these plants hard back after
the first flowering (May – July)
and they will respond with more
flowers in August or September.
For shady but not too dry spots
the mourning widow (Geranium
phaeum) flowers from April
through to July. The wild type has
dark maroon flowers, however
there are more showy varieties
to choose from. My favourite is
Geranium phaeum “Album” with
pure white flowers to brighten up
a dark spot.
For really shady, dry places
Geranium “Czakor” will provide
ground covering, aromatic
leaves, and brilliant magenta
flowering in early summer.
This really is a tough customer
succeeding where most plants
would fail.
My favourite for more open
sunny borders is the lovely
meadow cranesbill – Geranium
pratense. These flower in
mid-summer and often repeat
in autumn. The best of these is
“Mrs. Kendall Clark” who has
pearly-blue flowers and grows to
2ft 6in – 3ft / 75-90cm tall.
The superstar of blue geraniums
must be “Rozanne”; voted plant
of Centenary by The Royal
Horticultural Society for very
good reason: Her large, whitecentred
blue flowers smoother the
trailing stems of the plant from
June to October and she grows
well in partial shade.
Geraniums can all be cut back
after flowering and some will
rebloom, but all will grow fresh,
attractive leaves. It’s worth
dividing them every few years
after flowering to keep them
vigorous. They will benefit from
your normal garden feeding
programme – I feed with
growmore in spring and blood,
fish and bone in summer.
Refresh, Restore, Recharge
There is something utterly renewing and rejuvenating about
Spring, and for this year in particular, that feeling is more
significant than ever.
After months of miserable lockdown and
cold dreary weather, now is the time
to spruce up our homes, embracing
the sunlight and energy that
comes with the new season.
Who doesn’t love a Spring clean?
It feels so good to get everything in order with a
full clear out and a refreshening of our homes,
from clearing counter tops to finally cleaning the
microwave or defrosting the freezer.
One magical cleaning agent I’ve recently discovered
is white wine vinegar. Vinegar is a natural
disinfectant making it not only cheap to use but also
eco-friendly. It has the ability to dissolve mineral
deposit, grease, dirt, grime and bacteria. To clean
the inside of your kitchen cupboards simply use
equal parts of warm water with white wine vinegar
in a spray bottle. Spray inside the cupboards then
wipe down with a clean cloth.
Declutter
Research has shown that clutter and mess can
cause anxiety and create stress - our brains like
order. Now is the perfect time to help recharge
our batteries and purge unnecessary items. When
you start, and particularly if you are a natural
hoarder, don’t be overwhelmed. It’s important
to focus on one room, one space or even just a
zone within a room (eg, your bathroom cabinet),
completing the job fully before moving on.
One simple trick to help you declutter is to use four
empty cardboard boxes:-
Box 1 - Put away
This box is for items that have crept out of
their storage spaces, this could be a cup in the
bathroom or a jumper in the kitchen.
Box 2 – Donate
This is for the charity shop and are items you can
imagine another person wanting or needing.
Box 3 – Recycle
Items that need to be recycled such as plastic, glass
or paper.
Box 4 – THE BIN!
Be brutal, if you don’t need it or use it, it serves no
purpose or its broken beyond repair, then get rid.
Bring Mother Nature inside
Not only do indoor plants enhance the overall
appearance of a space, but they’ve been shown to
boost moods, increase creativity, reduce stress, and
eliminate air pollutants — making for a healthier,
happier you. Obviously, real plants are best but if
you’re nervous about keeping one alive then there
are some great faux products on the market now.
Simple updates with minimal spend
Put away heavy faux fur throws and wool blankets
and replace with lighter fabrics like cotton or linen.
Swap out dark colours which were right for winter
and bring in bold pastels or neons to create that
fresh spring look. Crisp neutrals can make a room
feel bigger and brighter. For example layering
whites and pale pinks can be a lovely way to add
a pop of colour while keeping your space neutral.
Adding a lovely woven basket or two is the perfect
accessory for a room to store bits while still looking
chic and stylish, a great way to reduce clutter and
change up your look.
Making an entrance
It’s also nice to freshen up the outside and small
changes can make such a difference. Transform
the entrance by changing the colour of your
front door or simply replace the door matt with
something stylish and smart. Frame the doorway
with a planter either side to make a warm,
welcoming and elegant statement for you and
your guests.
If you require help with any aspects of interiors,
from design, spatial planning to decluttering,
contact Lisa on 07837 096 707.

Ford Mondeo 2.0 TiVCT HYBRID Titanium:
I’d Love To Change The World
From the outside, there’s a
confidence of form to this
Mondeo estate that hints at, in
MotorMartin’s eyes, a lost Aston
Martin, it’s superb chrome lined
front grille, deep front spoiler and
subtle chrome highlights looking
absolutely stunning in any light.
Moving around the muscular
front wheel arches and taking in
the strong crease running along
the car’s high waist allows you
to drink in the premium look and
feel of this handsome estate. 18”
10 x 2-spoke alloy wheels add
a hint of sportiness to the mix as
does the rear privacy glass and
chrome surround to the windows
whilst the roof rails of the estate
edition finish off the look with
some panache.
Once inside your eyes are
immediately drawn to the
integration of the pin sharp
8” touchscreen with the rest
of the centre console. Quality
leather seats are infinitely
adjustable, as well as being
heated, and provide the driver
and passengers with a very
comfortable place to spend their
time.
With the Mondeo on test being
the bang on trend hybrid edition,
Ford have provided the driver
with a 10” colour TFT cluster
display allowing you to monitor
every aspect of the future
proof drivetrain as you strive for
maximum efficiency. Completing
the interior and raising it to a
standard worthy of the titanium
nameplate are bright-finish front
door scuff plates, multi-colour
LED ambient lighting, autodimming
rear-view mirror and
MotorMartin’s personal favourite,
the ‘Ford Power’ starter and
keyless entry system.
But let us address the elephant
in the room, that very clever
hybrid petrol engine and see
why it’s possibly the ideal halfway
house for those worried about
the transition to a full on BEV
(Battery Electric Vehicle.) Doing
away with any hint of range
anxiety, the Mondeo Hybrid has
two sources of power which it
automatically switches between
depending on the external road
conditions and the heaviness of
your own right foot. Increases in
technology and usability allow for
a conventional petrol only driving
mode, a pure electric mode
(for short distances) or the use
of both together to power the
vehicle as needed. Not only that
but a hybrid engine recharges
the battery used in two ways,
regenerative braking capturing
typically wasted energy to create
electricity, which charges the
battery and the conventional
engine itself powers the
generator to generate electricity
and again, charge the battery.
The best bit though is that all of
this happens without any decision
making or input from the driver.
Perfect.
Now let’s run through a few
figures. The 2.0 TiVCT engine
delivers an impressive 185bhp
which, when combined with
maximum torque of 128 ft/lb
torque means that the Mondeo
has more than enough power to
deliver both people and goods
swiftly and trouble free. What’s
more, you benefit from up to
50.4mpg on the combined cycle
and CO2 emissions of just 103g/
km, allowing preferential rates of
vehicle tax over a purely petrol
engine. Figures that would have
been impossible to achieve in
such a luxurious, petrol estate
only a few short years ago.
What we have then with this
Hybrid Titanium Mondeo estate
is an extremely handsome mile
muncher with the typical estate
benefits of a cavernous boot
(633 litres with the rear seats up
and 1508 litres with the seats
down) excellent interior space
for driver and passengers alike,
all the driving aids and tech that
you could possibly need and,
because of the efficient nature
of the car’s clever power terrain,
you’ll also notice a difference in
your wallet.
A job well done and a price
starting at only £29,830.
improve your home with klg
by KLG Rutland
With much of the UK still stuck at home, this
period of time has prompted many of us to reflect
on our surroundings and start contemplating
potential post-lockdown home improvements.
The extra time indoors presents an opportunity
to plan ahead and think about the changes that
would raise your quality of life (and the value of
your house!).
DIY home improvement ideas
DIY projects are great for keeping the household
occupied and giving everyone common goals to
work towards. Whatever your budget, there are
small, achievable changes you can make to your
home to create a more enjoyable environment to live
in. Given that there’s no definite answer as to when
things will completely return to normal, now is the
time to upgrade your living space.
Even inexpensive home improvement projects can
have a considerable impact. If it’s needed, giving
your rooms a fresh lick of paint is an excellent place
to start. Use up some of those old tins you’ve got
lying around if you can. Simply repainting a room is
rewarding, but there’s also the opportunity to pick
out a new shade and revitalise the space.
Online DIY
Whilst you might not want to replace your furniture
altogether until you can visit the full range of stores
in person, you can upgrade existing features using
only items that can be bought online. Looking
through many online websites such as Amazon and
eBay can allow you to find little niches that may not
have been widely available when looking through
shops, specifically looking through local small
businesses on Etsy which allows the user to explore
a vast network of handmade products.
Post-lockdown home improvements
Once you’ve had enough of creative DIY projects,
you can start planning post-lockdown improvements
that will revolutionise your experience of being at
home and increase the value of the property. Doing
your research now will save you time and money in
the future.
Following current government guidelines KLG
Rutland are still open during lockdown so you have
the opportunity to put your plans into action. Our
staff will provide consultations and quotations for
your project!
Invest for the long term
When you’re comparing the different options
available for your project, it’s really worth thinking
about the long term and investing in projects that
will stand the test of time. Many homeowners opt
for the cheapest manufacturer and installer, only to
regret their decision in a few years when the signs of
poor workmanship begin to show.
This advice applies not only to choosing a company
but also to selecting the components that go into
your project. For example, whilst composite doors
may be a more expensive option than uPVC when
replacing the back door in your home, it’s worth
investing in the stronger material for greater security
and longevity.
Whilst the age-old adage that you get what you pay
for may not always apply these days, it is certainly
the case when it comes to home improvements.
Research your project thoroughly, check out all of
the possible options, and avoid rash, inexpensive
purchases that could cost you money down the line.
If you’re planning a project with a focus on doors,
windows, or conservatories contact us for a free
consultation. KLG Rutland: 0115 9221155 or visit:
“Then put your warm little hand in mine,
There ain’t no hill or mountain we can’t climb
Babe, I got you babe”...Groundhog Day, or that’s
how it feels to be back in lockdown again.
When I wrote my first lockdown article, I said I
hoped that by the time it had gone to print, we
would be back to “normal”. Sadly, that didn’t quite
pan out. Here’s my latest lockdown update…
Uni-boy is back. Again. Back in his old room (pig
sty), rent free. Not that I’m bitter. I love the mess.
The wet towels on his bedroom floor. The sodden
bathmat that never gets hung up to dry. The crumbs
that litter the kitchen floor directly under the treat
cupboard that he, allegedly, never goes in. The
endless yogurt pot scraping.
At least now he has learnt to cook and pretty
much feeds himself. Just after he moved back
in, there was a shout from the kitchen and I went
rushing in – what’s up? “I’ve left my Bircher pot
in Loughborough.” There was silence while we
processed this remark and he realised how poncey
he sounded. Wow Uni-boy, you’ve changed. What’s
wrong with Crunchy Nut cornflakes?
Youngest son is trying to get a part time job (about
time). He gets notifications from Indeed and when
reading one, he commented on the pay being really
good. Really Frankie? What makes you think that?
“Well, it says sick pay”. Not sure the world of work
is ready for him yet!
Previously, I moaned about Zoom chats and my
total incompetence at using this technology. Well,
fast forward a year and get me, doing online fitness
classes, having pub nights and even giving virtual
Lockdown
Three Tale
presentations. I totally miss the gym, but there are
some advantages of keeping fit in your bedroom.
When you have to drop to the floor for press ups,
if you position the camera at the right angle, you
can sneak a few crisps and have a quick breather
incognito. So I’ve heard anyway…
During lockdown no.1 I shared the horrific images
of my old dog, Harry looking embarrassed – half
clipped, half dreadlocked. Well, things have
improved on that front. We now have a proper
grooming kit. In fact, Harry now has the smartest
haircut in the whole house. Luckily, we can all wear
woolly hats for at least another month or so.
One good thing to have emerged from being locked
down again – I have become house proud. Yes
indeed. Whilst eating crisps on the floor during a
HIIT class, a large cloud of dog fur wafted past my
nose. Enough was enough. I grabbed my cleaning
caddy (yes, I do have one) and started from the top
floor, working my way down. No room remained
untouched. And the weird bit…I ENJOYED IT!!!!
Although the house has benefitted from lockdown,
my appearance has taken a further nose dive, if
that were even possible. Dog walking clothes have
become the new black. Hair gets washed once a
week – surely that will stop the colour fading so
quickly won’t it?? If I am really pushing the boat out,
I will put my best Christmas PJ’s on for the weekend
and float around my gleaming house smugly
sipping prosecco. You’ve got to get your kicks
somehow, right?
Lockdown, you have a lot to answer for.
Cloudy2Clear, A Family Run
Service With A Smile.
I think we can all agree that
seeing the back of 2020 was a
welcome event for each and
every one of us, and we can
now hopefully march into 2021
with renewed positivity and
optimism. One thing is for sure
though, there have also been
some heart warming positives
that we can take out of last
year. It has often been said that
we can only really get to know
one another and realise what
is truly important in times of
crisis. I think few would argue
that in this case what has
proven to be important is local
community spirit and family.
When talking to the Managing
Director of Cloudy2Clear
windows Richard Burke it
became clear that these values
have been held dear for a
number of years. Since starting
Have Your Windows
the business some years ago
Cloudy2Clear have remained true
to their core values of supporting
the community by providing
a service that saves the public
money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only
requires the glass to be replaced
and not the whole window once
the unit has failed. Richard
commented “Cloudy2Clear were
able to assist our community
through the last financial crisis
in 2008 due to the savings that
can be made in using our service.
Unfortunately we might be going
through something similar again
soon and the public can rest
assured that we will be there to
help once again”.
Northward Bound
by Bob Massey
Through the centuries Nottingham was
contained within a city wall. Beyond the wall
was Sherwood Forest which stretched over
most of the country all the way to York.
If you were travelling north from Nottingham
there were only two roads you could take. The
main route was what is now the A60/614 which
travelled through thick forest for most of its
route. Roads at this time were very bad and
the hill at Redhill was near impassible in bad
weather. In winter, travel stopped altogether.
This was a much travelled route however and
became the major route for travellers and
armies to follow.
When the Turnpike Act came into force in the
19th century this road was fitted with toll gates
along its length. The road surface was also
much improved. The downside of this was that
it involved a cost to traverse each section and
it slowed travellers down. If you had a large
number of animals or people to transport it
became very expensive, especially if you had
to pass through multiple toll gates. There was
another route that you could take, at least for
the early part of your journey. This was up the
hill leading to Mapperley and along Mapperley
Plains joining the now A614 after Leapool. As
a result it missed out most of the toll gates,
saving a considerable amount of money for
a large party. The road was rough and still
required climbing steep hills including the
steady climb of Woodborough Road.
In 1827, Woomwells Menagerie, who were
leaving Nottingham to visit Worksop, used this
route with their long train of animal trailers and
wagons.
At the time, Mapperley was a windy place,
mainly covered with scrubland and sheep with
only a few farms dotted about. Not an easy
place for highwaymen and robbers to hideout,
unlike the other northern route through thick
forest. So if you could manage the rough road
this was a better option.
Travellers started to use this alternate route
and an inn, the Travellers Rest, was built to
accommodate their needs. It was built about
half way from Nottingham to where the road
rejoined the main route north. To this day it’s
still out-of-the-way, within a mainly agricultural
area.
Having negotiated Woodborough Road hill,
the wilds of Mapperley Plains and the terrible
road conditions, the travellers were due a welldeserved
rest at this inn before continuing their
journey north.
The road through Mapperley was eventually
improved as the area started to grow in
importance. The industrial revolution and the
great demand for bricks meant that Mapperley
needed good roads to transport the millions
of bricks now being produced. Houses, shops
and pubs started to be built for the travellers,
brickyard workers and residents. Eventually
a tram line was constructed from Nottingham
which made access to Mapperley much easier.
The route from Nottingham over Mapperley Top
towards Leapoool however began to decrease
in use. This was because the Mansfield/Rufford
Roads were deturnpiked in the late 1800s. It
was now free to travel this way. The Redhill
cutting had been made in 1812 and so even
this hill was not the problem it once was. Traffic
north from Nottingham now mainly travelled the
A60 route again. The alternative route had lost
its importance.
I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with
more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

2020 edition of NG3 is 25 November 2019.

The Year That Shall
Not be Spoken!
Let’s face it, 2020 was the year nobody expected.
We witnessed family and friends struggle mentally
and physically, and our day-to-day living started
to be overshadowed with fear.
2021 is going to be our year to embrace change.
To regain focus, and move forward. And this is
how we are going to do it:
Your Focus Points
Mindset
Habits
Nutrition
Fitness
Everything starts with mindset. We are fortunate
to have a wealth of knowledge around us at the
click of a button. From podcasts to books, we
have more than enough resources to gain clarity
around our demotivated minds.
*My Fit Flow Radio podcast is also only a click
away.
Our actions define us, and habits create us. Bad
habits lead to poor ways of living. From changing
your daily structure to dropping the workouts, we
spend more time fighting breaking habits than we
focus on just doing. A new habit takes around 60
days to hit the subconscious thought pattern.
Want to do something new? Do it for 60 days
without fail.
I hate diets. We don’t diet. We focus on nutrition.
Diet is a word used to describe the variety of
foods we eat, not the restriction on how we eat.
You can eat balanced and still produce amazing
results, so don’t give up just yet. I’ve given you a
blueprint to help.
Being limited on space and time doesn’t mean
our fitness should suffer. We actually only need a
little exercise to begin with to see big changes. It’s
the consistency of how often we do the little bits
that count.
Your challenge this month is to build on at least
one focus point to start regaining that control
and move forward to a happier, healthier lifestyle.
And with the blueprint below, this is how you are
going to achieve it.
MINDSET: Choose one podcast or one book to
expand your wealth of knowledge. I recommend
top-selling personal development books and
podcasts. The value of these is 10x on your
lifestyle. Tackle one at a time. Don’t overwhelm
yourself.
HABIT: Pick one new habit to start, or one old
habit to break. Take action on this until the effort
becomes automatic (60 days, remember?). Then
implement, review other habits and repeat. Want
to run 5k? Start by walking around the block. Each
day challenges the habit.
NUTRITION: Don’t face the diet mindset, or
food restriction with fear.
Start by using an online calculator, get an idea
of how many calories you need per day and just
start logging your intake. Once your mindfulness
improves with food, your habit will kick in and you
won’t need to track it anymore.
FITNESS: Don’t make exercise harder than it
needs to be. Build a little muscle, drop a little
body fat and enjoy the process. Too many
times I’ve seen exercise become so extreme it
consumes a lifestyle. Exercise should add time to
life, not take it away. So long as you are burning
400-800 calories from light cardio or resistance
training you will produce a result using the calorie
knowledge learnt from blueprint No.3.
2020 was a hard year for all of us. Implementing
a little change every day will help you get back on
track, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, you must be kind
to yourself.
DOES LOCKDOWN
MEAN THAT SELF CARE
HAS TO STOP?
‘Absolutely NOT ‘ – says Dr.Olha BDS, from Angels
Twelve, Shine Medical and Cosmetic Courses clinics.
During these challenging times, staying positive and
taking care of yourself is more important than ever.
Some would argue; ‘why would I bother if I don’t go
out, if I don’t see my friends?’
But you are DOING THIS FOR YOURSELF.
We always hear; ‘look after your loved ones, look after
the vulnerable.’ And we are 100% supporting this. But,
if you can’t look after yourself, how can you look after
the others? If you want to cheer people up, if you want
to make them feel better, you need to feel and look that
way yourself.
SELFCARE today is so important.
There are so many aspects to it: healthy diet, exercise,
mental health, wellbeing and of course we can’t take
this away – our face.
Looking well, fresh and healthy can really make a big
difference to your day.
Dr.Olha shares with you what can be done while many
cosmetic clinics and beauty salons are closed.
At our clinic we have seen a significant increase in
online consultations.
We developed this service during the first lockdown and
it has grown dramatically over the last year.
By booking an online consultation you are bringing the
expert advice right to the comfort of your home.
Our doctors and therapist will give you detailed advice
about any skin condition that you may have, advice on
correct skin care and our doctors can prescribe skin
care and post it to you as well.
Healthy glowing skin is a great foundation for any
further treatments, if you decide to have them later
when we are able to open the clinic again.
Our specialists also provide you with a bespoke
treatment plan.
Consultations are FREE of charge, so why not contact
us and take the first step to achieving a healthy
glowing skin.
Thanks to you, our Santa Tours have been an
unprecedented success.
It was fantastic to see so many families gathering
(safely) and giving Santa a really warm welcome with
so many smiles.
All of us involved in the collecting have found it truly
heart-warming and it has been a pleasure to hear so
many people saying;
“Thank you for coming and making it seem like a
normal Christmas.”
You have also ‘lit the way’ for Santa, as requested,
in spectacular fashion. The amount of notes in the
collecting buckets has never been seen before, so it
shows that our Rotary Club, and what we try to do, is
really appreciated.
We are delighted to say we have raised over £11,000
with the vast majority of that going to support local
causes.
If you would like to find out more about us, perhaps
becoming a ‘friend’ or a member of our club,
live to an audience.
Nevertheless we hope to have an extravaganza of songs for
you, your family and friends to join in with.
Our Christmas concert was well received, with charitable
donations exceeding all our expectations. If you wish to
contribute or would like to join in the fun, or would like more
recommendations about on-line productions they have seen,
and safe walking locations they have discovered etc.
We have also taken the opportunity to update our website
TAROSCOPES
Air signs- Libra, Aquarius,
Gemini
(Knight of Coins, The Emperor,
Three of Swords)
Stop letting them walk all over you! I mean it,
because it’s gone on long enough, and you
DO have power here. No one can make you
feel inferior without your consent. Take back
the power, and freeze these people out. They
are taking advantage of your warm nature,
and you’re better off without this influence in
your life.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries,
Sagittarius
(Queen of Cups, Three of Wands,
Five of Coins)
Like a phoenix from the flames, you’re back in
business, and working with others to get ahead
(leaving some shaking their head, because they
under-estimated you AGAIN). It’s your bonds with
others that help you progress and get some right
now. You’re a leader. Your power, you know, is IN
your presence. Use it.
Earth signs- Capricorn,
Virgo, Taurus
(Nine of Wands, The Devil, Temperance)
Listen: nothing is as bad, hard or overwhelming
as it seems right now. Know that you only have
to live each single moment, one at a time, so
stop focusing on the mountain and see the next
step on the path- and take it!
You’re overblowing your obstacles and making
yourself scared. You can handle ALL of this; just
one little step at a time.
Water signs- Cancer,
Pisces, Scorpio
(Four of Wands, Queen of Wands,
Ace of Cups)
A new beginning or relationship beckons you,
and it has the power to improve your life in more
ways than you can imagine! Believe in this bond,
and let it into your life fully. Maybe you are going
to move in together, maybe you’ll start a little
side venture together, maybe you plan a great
adventure or trip together. This bond has happy
days written all over it.
Top Dogs: Meet Notts Police K9 Unit
A police dog’s sniffer senses and
determination mean they can hunt
down suspects when they might have
otherwise escaped, and uncover illicit
items when they’re hidden. It’s a wellknown
saying that dogs are man’s best
friend, but when it comes to policing,
they are also invaluable work colleagues
too.
There are two types of dog which you
can find in policing; search dogs, or
‘sniffer dogs’, who sniff out suspicious
items and general purpose dogs, who
chase and detain suspects. All have
been highly trained and have gone
through various assessments and
training courses to ensure they are
suited to the role.
Police dogs are cared for by their
dedicated handlers. Handlers have to
ensure they have sufficient space and
a kennel for their dogs at their family
homes and their canine colleagues
travel to and from work with them each
day, where among training and other
exercise they are ready to be called to
an incident at a moment’s notice.
As well as being ready for urgent
call-outs, the dogs are also involved in
a number of pre-planned operations
and patrols, and support various
other departments in force with their
important police work including finding
missing people.
Nottinghamshire Police’s Dog Section
have also welcomed seven new
handlers in the last year, bringing new
dogs with them. We would like to
introduce you to some of the brightest
members of the pack:
PD Quantum is one
brave police dog,
and has had an
eventful career with
the force, bouncing
back from injury a
number of times.
Whilst successfully
chasing two violent
burglars in Top Valley during March
2018, the now five-year-old Belgian
Malinois and German Shepherd cross
received stab injuries to his face.
However, this hasn’t stopped him and
he can most recently be found on the
latest season of TV documentary Police
Interceptors with his handler PC Jen
Ellse, where among many successes he
was able to pick up a scent after finding
a ditched car in Broxtowe Estate and
tracked down two suspects who were
hiding in a nearby garden.
PD Cooper joined
Nottinghamshire
Police after his
family got in touch
feeling that he
needed more of
a challenge, and
that he was simply
too energetic in
his usual family home setting despite
getting a couple of hours of exercise a
day. He passed his course and joined
the force officially in February 2020,
where he also joined the family of PC
Jen Ellse and PD Quantum.
Cooper is a ‘sniffer’ dog and has been
trained to search for a wide range of
drugs, cash and firearms. He’s shown
great success as a ‘sniffer’ dog, and
during one particular job he helped
uncover £3,000 in cash which was well
hidden in between a radiator.
