10-year celebrations for market
• From page 1
“We saw this in Devon Conway’s
epic 99 against Australia,’’
he said.
“Every time we play, we enjoy
the opportunity,” which was
evident in the school’s recent
championship performance in the
T20 Gillette Cup Qualifier.
Next up for the school is the
girl’s competition with the theme
being “Fun with Cricket.”
The first XI also have their next
Gillette Cup knockout match
THE OPAWA Farmers’ Market
has celebrated a decade of
supplying residents with fresh
and local produce.
Launched just days after the
February 22, 2011, earthquake,
the market was a welcome initiative.
Its timely arrival provided
a haven for locals to connect
and purchase fresh, local
produce and other staples
from Canterbury growers and
producers.
Although it appeared to be a
response to the earthquakes, the
market had actually been many
months in the planning.
Because of this, all the growers
and producers had already been
secured, many of whom lost all
of their usual outlets due to the
earthquakes.
Ten years on, and with over
500 events under its belt, market
manager Doug Hesp is proud
that the market continues to
maintain its primary purpose of
providing a local outlet to purchase
fresh produce direct from
their local growers.
“It’s great to see our community
supporting local growers
and producers which not only
strengthens community connections
but also our food security,”
he said.
“We are aware some of our
regular weekly shoppers came
to that first market and have
continued to support their local
businesses throughout this time.
We’d like to pass on our thanks
and appreciation on behalf of
our stallholders to all those who
have supported the market over
the years.”
About 1000 tonnes of local
produce has been supplied
through the market over the past
decade – just one example of the
positive impact the market has
had on the wider community.
The farmers’ market has also
been host to a number of popular
events over the years drawing
in locals and Cantabrians from
afar including the children’s
spud growing competitions,
