English PageIssue 277 (6) Asian Tribune 26 March, 2021EditorialCovid resurgenceExactly a year after India imposedthe world’s strictest lockdown inorder to contain Covid-19, the secondwave of the pandemic is spreadingacross the country. The daily caseloadhas reached around 47,000, the highestin the past four months or so, evenas the fresh coronavirus infections havebeen rising at a faster rate than the recoveriesfor the past over 10 days. Theworst-affected states have started reimposingrestrictions, with Punjab enforcingnight curfew in the districtswhere the situation is deteriorating fast. The efficacy of such steps, however, remains questionable. The nationwide lockdown fromMarch-end to May-end last year had impactedmillions of lives as well as livelihoods. The economy, which hadslipped into recession, is still strugglingto regain the pre-Covid growth rate.Going by this nightmarish experience, another lockdown is ruled out. TheMaharashtra Government has made itclear that people must follow Covid-19safety protocols if the state is to avoidanother lockdown. This holds true forthe rest of the country as well. The basicdrill — wearing masks, washinghands and maintaining social distancing— is still as relevant, if not more, asit was a year ago. The violators shouldbe strictly dealt with as per the law sothat it deters others from becomingreckless. Even though the election seasonis in full swing, the onus is on politicalleaders to encourage Covid-appropriatebehaviour at rallies and exhorttheir supporters to arrange smallergatherings. Political and social congregationsthat turn out to be superspreadersof the virus will jeopardiseIndia’s valiant fight against the pandemic. It is also critical to extend thevaccination programme beyond thelimit of 45 years set by the Centre onTuesday. People in the working agegroup (25-60 years) need to be coveredat the earliest so that they can keepcontributing to economic recovery withoutthe fear of getting infected. Thoughthe daily caseload is rising, it is nowherenear the peak of around 98,000 thatwas witnessed in September last year. This should inspire confidence amongall stakeholders and spur them tominimise the damage caused by thesecond wave.Yash SharmaQuad’s rise augurs well for India-Oz trade tiesEditorial TeamProf .
