Selwyn Times Wednesday March 31 2021 12 NEWS DOMESTIC student numbers are at a 10-year high at Lincoln University. Numbers for semester 1 are 35 per cent higher than at the same time last year, with a total of 894 domestic equivalent full-time students enrolled, an increase of 231 on semester 1, 2020. At the same time, new-to-programme domestic enrolments are up 58 per cent on last year. These figures represent the highest number of domestic EFTS enrolled for the university semester 1 programmes since before 2010. Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Bruce McKenzie said domestic student numbers were significantly ahead of target, and demonstrated the university’s ability to respond to changing demands in the Covid-19-affected environment. “New Zealand’s primary industries are confronting a number of distinct challenges in the Covid-impacted marketplace,” McKenzie said. “Lincoln has moved swiftly over the last 12 months to tailor course offerings to meet the demands of the country’s thriving food and fibre sectors, and ultimately produce graduates who will help drive the economy forward.” Property management. Six sub-degree programmes in the ields of food and fibre became fees-free when the Government’s targeted training and apprenticeship fund took effect in semester 2 last year. The university extended this initiative to offer its own fee waivers on targeted courses until December 2022. Lincoln has also recorded its highest total of Māori students since before 2010, with 161 students, an increase of 17 per cent since semester 1 last year. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Students take win against police teams • By Susan Sandys IT WAS an epic battle of youth against experience at the inaugural Rolleston College versus Selwyn Police Sports Day. Police were on the back foot to start with, outnumbered at just 37, compared to 60 students. Co-organiser Constable Glenn Dawson said all games were played in great spirit. There was plenty of banter at the basketball. The result saw students come out on top by just one point, achieved in the final second. Students also won the netball and cricket, while police won the football and touch rugby. The latter game was the undoing of the area response manager Senior Sergeant Dean Harker, who was injured in the first minute, tearing a hamstring. Police were quite happy to be the underdogs, it has just made them all the more determined for next year, Dawson said.
