P A G E 4 5E N T E R T A I N M E N T A N D R E P R E S E N T A T I O NThe Queen of Goguryeo depicts beautiful Asian women who could be Korean (or evenmixed with Chinese, Jurchen, or Mongolian blood) living in northern Manchuria, wherethe kingdom of Goguryeo existed. I depicted the pinnacle of Asian beauty by beingfaithful to the Asian genes and physical character and what it can result in without theneed to give them a westernized appearance like Japanese anime. I want every Asiangirl or woman to look at the painting and feel the immense beauty that is a reflection ofthemselves, and I want every Asian boy and man to look at the baby tiger and feel theraw power of the baby tiger, which is a reflection of their future selves. In all, TheQueen of Goguryeo is about equality and the pursuit of beauty and truth. I hope I havebeen quite successful in this regard.
C H U N B U M P A R KP A G E 4 6T H E Q U E E N O FG O G U R Y E OB y C h u n b u m P a r kI grew up in the American South and experienced racistattitudes that belittled Asians and Asian women in particularabout their appearances and their lack of attractivenessand/or sexual desirability. On one hand we had the Europeanpaintings and fashion and swimsuit magazines that essentiallydeclared western beauty standards to be a pinnacle, while onthe other hand Japanese anime agreed by whitewashing itscharacters to appear western, which was a form of selfhatred.As a teen, I had such low self esteem about myself andmy race because of the constant belittling and derogatorycomments expressed by my classmates and the lack ofrepresentation of Asians in the media, the arts, etc. The onlyworthy Asians were the ones who could get into the IvyLeague schools or become a doctor or lawyer. It was onlythrough a decade of soul searching and my own exploration ofmy artistic abilities and visions that I regained my sense ofself, self-esteem, and pride of being an Asian.
