P A G E 8 1A C T I V I S MThai Americans are underrepresented inthe media and arts. Your work certainlycombats that, while creating a uniquelyyou. Not Thai, not American, but you. Canyou talk more about your upbringing -from the Cambodian community in SouthCarolina you grew up in, then the Filipinxcommunity you attended college around -and how that plays a role in your artpractice?Not many people talk about Asiancommunities in the deep south. There is aChinatown in Mississippi composed ofChinese families with Southern accents.Their ancestors moved to Mississippi topick cotton and eventually became farmersand grocery store owners in Blackcommunities. I grew up in Boiling Springs,South Carolina which consisted of Lao,Cambodian, and Thai families living in thedeep south. Most of the community wasCambodian or half Thai.I didn't get a chance to interact muchwithin the culture outside of schoolbecause my parents didn't let me out oftenbut I did celebrate Khmer New Year. I waslucky to live in the South and still feelrepresented. Though I wafeel represented. Though I wasdiscriminated against by White people, Igrew up during the "AZN" surge coincidingwith Tumblr so we all were prettyempowered about being Southeast Asian.My friends were either B–boys or reallyinto cars driving Honda Integras. It was areally fun time forsure! Though I have livedin a lot of places, I tell people I'm fromSouth Carolina because that's where Imainly grew up. I'm proud of my upbringingand I find myself more grounded than mostAsian Americans living in California. I hadfriends who would go "muddin" and Iremember the most exciting thing to everhappen in my hometown was the firstQuiktrip gas station opening up down thestreet, and a burger joint called Cookout. Ididn't catch the Southern accent outside ofsaying "y'all" unfortunately.When I moved to Chicago, I was introducedto more Asian cultures with a lot ofinternational Korean and Chinese students.One of the most disappointing experiencesin my life was when I met another Thaiartist that was my age for the first time, butthey hated the idea of being Thai. Thus Ifound myself enveloped

I was friendswith people who worked in the Field Museum, who specifically overlooked thePhilippines collection. I attended events introducing FilipinX culture and mettraditional tattoo artist/historian Lane Wilcken. I knew pride when I lived in SouthCarolina but for some reason, FilipinX pride in Chicago was powerful. I felt acceptedwithin the FIlipinX community but I was still just an observer, but being within thiscommunity I was inspired to build my own and share my identity as a Southern ChineseThai American in hopes of finding others who yearn for the same communal pride as Iwas. So I started making art about Thai culture and the language which led to memeeting a small community on Instagram called "ThaisTogether." It's a slow build butI'm enjoying the process.
