Every year on Chinese New Year, myparents would get a new one to put on our door and we would hang it up together. Since thebeginning of the pandemic, I've been stuck living away from home, away from my family, andaway from my culture. It comes with a lot of mixed feelings: it feels like I am growing up andbecoming more independent, but it also feels like I’m growing more distant from my communityand my culture. Making this piece was a small way of keeping Chinese culture close to me,while also wishing myself good luck.Recreating an object like this represents the labor of learning about heritage but also representsthe love and care that this decoration carries. In thinking about the medium of the work, it isinteresting to compare the bobbin lace process to the ink calligraphy process that thesedecorations are typically executed in.

Bobbin lace appears to beextremely difficult and complicated, withits seemingly infinite bobbins, but a signalstitch is fairly easy to learn. Contrastingly,calligraphy is deceptively simple, withquick brushstrokes that actually takeyears to fully master. They both functionon a 2D plane, creating a final work that isthin and delicate.This piece is made out of bobbin laceinstead of the traditional paper, so itdoesn’t hold its shape when hung on thewall unless all four corners are pinned.The lack of structure signifies the abilityfor traditions to shift and change withnew generations. The portability of thisobject also speaks towards the need fortraditions to move with people.
