The zine has always been freefor artists to submit and get published. Thezine has always uplifted the voices of artistsand writers who are marginalized from thedominant culture. These principles haverooted us as both our zine and social mediapresence grew!Along with staff editor Baotran Truong,who has done a lot of work editing pagespreads and putting final touches on thelast three issues of the zine, I have steppeddown from Editor-in-Chief of the AsianAmerican Arts Zine.It is bittersweet to say goodbye but thestaff is in good hands. Sam Riedman will betaking over as Editor-in-Chief and I knowshe will do an amazing job. Sam’sbackground is in organic farming andwriting. Her nature-based found artcollages in this volume are a delight. Hereye for design and passion for all thingsnatural and sustainable will be a greatdirection for the zine. We could all do witha little plant medicine. She will make agreat leader because she is varied inexperience and genuinely intuitive. Herpast interviews for the Asian American ArtsZine have shown just how Sammie listens inan authentic way, which I know will serveher well as the next Editor-in-Chief!
K A T H E R I N E L E U N GP A G E 4In this issue, here are some highlights:Interview with Koy Suntichotiun, theunofficial inventor of the emoji collage,an artist I was absolutely starstruck toget to interviewMisha’s story about her father, a fineartist, turning the stereotype of “Asianparent” on its head!Jasmine Li’s wonderful cover image andactivism-based worksThe entire food section was edited byGrace - and Cole Chang, Jamie Mah,Ethel Martinez, Brianna Mitjans’ worksare all wonderful! Food in the Asiancommunity plays such a nostalgic andpowerful role.I hope you enjoy Volume IV. I can’t wait tosee what Sammie cooks up for Volume V.KatherineP.S. I won’t be gone from self and indiepublishing and I will certainly see you atzine fests.
