identifies hot spots<br />
and acts as deterrent<br />

Merely driving a patrol<br />
car down a street acted as a<br />
deterrent, because criminals<br />
know they are being watched.<br />
“We’re forewarned if there’s<br />
an area [with] a lot of burglaries,<br />
and St Albans has come up on<br />
that list. It comes and goes, but<br />
it just seems to get worse in St<br />
Albans,” he said.<br />
“Four-wheel-drives have been<br />
taken, bike thefts in another area<br />
and Stanmore Rd is quite a hot<br />
spot.<br />
“If we see anything we report<br />
it to the police, but we don’t put<br />
ourselves in danger because<br />
we’re volunteers. Visibility of the<br />
car is the deterrent more than<br />
anything else.”<br />
Police did not respond to<br />
questions asked by Nor’West<br />
<strong>News</strong> by deadline. But last<br />
week they warned residents to<br />
remain vigilant after 166 bike<br />
thefts worth the equivalent of<br />
$250,000 have been stolen in<br />
the past six weeks around the<br />
central city.<br />
Meanwhile, a Community<br />
Safety Initiative Working Group<br />
has been formed to also address<br />
growing crimes of a similar<br />
nature in Bishopdale, as well as<br />
Avonhead and Russley.<br />
The group, which involves<br />
Neighbourhood Support<br />
Canterbury and the<br />
Christchurch North Community<br />
Patrol, will facilitate residents<br />
providing informal feedback<br />
to self-identify any hot spots to<br />
focus on.<br />
It aimed to help residents<br />
feel safe by recognising and<br />
resourcing where possible based<br />
on the feedback, and supported<br />
opportunities for community<br />
partnerships and activities to<br />
respond to their issues.<br />
“The group looked at recorded<br />
evidence and police reported<br />
statistics; an increase was not<br />
clearly shown in these statistics.<br />
It is possible that the crimes,<br />
while being reported on social<br />
media, are not perhaps being<br />
reported to more official<br />
sources,” a Fendalton-Waimairi-<br />
Harewood Community Board<br />
area report for March read.<br />

at not-for-profit pre-school<br />
CHILDREN at the Christchurch<br />
Methodist Mission’s early<br />
childhood service arrived at<br />
the centre last week to see a<br />
vibrant new mural outside their<br />
premises.<br />
Spanning two walls, the mural<br />
features Aratupu’s signature<br />
piwakawaka, as well as totara<br />
and other flora and fauna<br />
that were once indigenous to<br />
Papanui.<br />
The children loved the huge<br />
piwakawaka, the baby birds and<br />
the ladybird in particular.<br />
The mural adds much-needed<br />
colour to a busy stretch of Harewood<br />
Rd, enhancing the area<br />
with a joyful example of public<br />
art for all to appreciate.<br />
CMM is grateful for funding<br />
from the Papanui-Innes Community<br />
Board, Creative New<br />
Zealand and other generous<br />
Aratupu funders.<br />
“Thanks also to chile_onenz of<br />
the New Brighton Outdoor Art<br />
Foundation for his design and<br />
talented artwork,” said a CMM<br />
spokeswoman.<br />
The mural completes the<br />
exterior revamp of the building,<br />
which was last year enhanced<br />
with the new Aratupu logo.<br />
Aratupu is a not-for-profit<br />
preschool that offers quality education<br />
to children from threemonths-old<br />
to school age.<br />
Its last Education Review<br />
Office report found Aratupu<br />
promoted positive learning<br />
outcomes for tamariki, with<br />
teachers demonstrating a strong<br />
commitment to the centre’s<br />
philosophy, vision and values<br />
of a socially just and inclusive<br />
society.<br />
Aratupu is run by the<br />
Methodist Mission.<br />
Aratupu staff include a<br />
whānau support worker, an<br />
on-site social worker dedicated<br />
to helping whānau resolve any<br />
issues or problems that may<br />
require particular support.<br />
