How to Protect Your Staff False Unemployment Claims Soar The increase in unemployment claims is creating a new headache for business owners; an increase in false unemployment claims landing in their mailboxes. Throughout Arizona, businesses are reporting fraudulent claims from people who have never worked at their company, and in some cases, claims coming in under the names of their current employees. And while the claims are false, the social security numbers they are using are real. Business owners need to go through the process of reporting the fraud and working through the Arizona Department of Economic Securitiy (DES) to report the fraud. In the meantime, CreditGuard is offering businesses a way to safeguard their employees’ personal information. CreditGuard, can monitor changes in address, which is how many of these fraudulent claims succeed, and send alerts if information is being traded, or a social security number is being used. The company is working with businesses who have been affected by these fraudulent claims and creating cost effective plans for companies who want to offer the extra protection to their employees. Terri Kimble, CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, has been working with elected officials and local businesses to bring awareness to the issue. “It’s one of our top priorities and we are working to establish ways for our members to protect their businesses and their employees,” she says. “In one case, a claim was filed using the correct name and social security number of a current employee. It’s just an enormous amount of red tape for business owners right now as their time is more valuable than ever.” If you think an unemployment claim may be fraudulent, call the AZDES fraud hotline at 1-800-251- 2436 or go online to report it.
