Tel: 038 411 009Facial recognition softwarehas always had the threat of lettingBig Brother watch us evenmore than in the past, but somethought that Covid mask wearingmight hopefully decreasethe use of such software.Anyone with a smartphonethat uses facial recognition willknow it does not really work witha mask on.That can be frustrating– or reassuring - but althoughmasks have undoubtedlythwarted the facial-recognitionindustry, the technology hasalso adapted.It may sound strange butwearing a mask does not necessarilystop a computer fromidentifying someone and thereare even examples of the pandemicbeing used as an excuseto use facial recognition.Last year, as people beganto increasingly wear masksaround the world, the prevailingview was it represented a hugechallenge to facial recognition.It seemed obvious - algorithmsdesigned to analyse faceswould be less accurate if part ofthe face was concealed.Sure enough, The NationalInstitute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) tested 89commercial facial-recognitionalgorithms - and found a 5-50%error rate in matching faces withdigitally applied masks to photosof the same person.But some facial-recognitiontechnologies still work prettywell on those wearing a mask.In January, a US Departmentof Homeland Security "controlled-scenariotest" found onewith a 96% success rate - althoughthe results "varied greatlybetween systems"."Based on these results" thedepartment said, "organisationsthat need to perform photo IDchecks could potentially allowindividuals to keep their maskson, thereby reducing the risk ofCovid-19 infection."And although some policeforces are using facial recognitionless,London's MetropolitanPolice, for example, has not conducteda facial-recognition test forover a year - it is still being used,even, reportedly, at Black LivesMatter protests last summer."Even if the use of this technologyis temporarily interrupted...that doesn't obviate the threat thatthis technology poses both in theshort and the long term," saysMichael Kleinman, from AmnestyInternational."Anyone walkingin front of a camera where policedepartments are running facialrecognition - their face can be capturedand they can be identified.That's Orwellian."In the private sector, it is harderto tell whether the use of facial recognitionhas decreased over thepast year - there is no directory, nolist of when and where it is used.But recently, it was announcedDisney World was to trial facial-recognitiontechnology for amonth.Its system takes an image ofa customer's face and convertsit into a unique number, which isassociated with the form of admissionused for entry into the themepark.The idea is to cut waiting times,with Disney saying it wants a more"touchless experience".And crucially,the technology does notrequire guests to take off theirmasks.The bottom line?
