LOCAL NEWS
Locals urged to be safe
Dangerous roads revealed as State Government seeks feedback on safety
NICOLA BARTON
The Parramatta region has some
of the most dangerous roads in
Sydney, according to insurance
companies – so what can we do to make
them safer?
In a bid to drive down the state’s road
death toll, the NSW Government is asking
for community feedback on a new fiveyear
Road Safety Action Plan, as part of
its commitment to driving the death toll
down towards zero.
Almost 1,100 people were killed on
Australia’s roads last year, a figure only
slightly less than the previous year, despite
COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns.
According to AAMI Insurance’s 2020
Crash Index, Pennant Hills Road at
Carlingford is among the top three most
dangerous roads in Sydney, with the M4
Motorway at Parramatta coming in at
sixth.
Nearby hot spots that featured in the top
10 also included Victoria Road in West
Ryde and Pennant Hills Road, Pennant
Hills.
Minister for Transport and Roads
Andrew Constance said the State Government
is committed to working towards
zero road trauma by 2056.
“We are asking the community to build
on the great work already undertaken
under the current Road Safety Action
Plan, which includes the $822 million
investment in the Safer Roads Program
and the Mobile Speed Camera Program,”
he said.
“We are continuing to increase our
investment in life saving infrastructure
like wide centre lines, flexible barriers and
rumble strips, but we want to hear from
you about how we can make your local
roads safer.”
The objectives to improve safety as
part of the Road Safety Action Plan 2026
include reducing drink and drug driving,
increasing speed compliance, creating
safer urban roads and reducing other
unsafe road behaviours such as driver
fatigue.
A Suncorp spokeswoman, on behalf of
AAMI Insurance, reminded locals to stay
vigilant on the roads.
“With traffic returning to pre-COVID-19
levels, it is important for all Parramatta
drivers to be alert and vigilant to their
surroundings,” the spokesperson said.
“All it takes is a moment of not having
your eyes on the road, for you to miss one
speed sign or for you to divert your attention
to something other than the task at
hand, for things to go wrong.”
Consultation on the 2026 Road Safety
Action Plan is open now and will close on
