GREENLIGHT’S
A Ryder Cup style tournament featuring GreenLight’s
newest portfolio organization, Per Scholas
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2020 // WESTON GOLF CLUB

GREENLIGHT’S
Thank you for joining us in support of the GreenLight Fund and our 12th portfolio organization: Per Scholas!
We know this year is different than most, and that is why we are especially
grateful that you have joined us for a day of competition and fun. We hope
you enjoy today’s activities featuring our 12th portfolio organization, Per
Scholas! Per Scholas, a truly amazing organization, sees a 400% increase
in salary for low-wealth residents by providing training and industryrecognized
credentials in the IT sector. In their first four years, Per Scholas
will reach close to 800 adults —and help move many more families out of
poverty. In response to COVID-19, Per Scholas expanded its remote learning
capabilities and training to support the global shift to increased remote
work. By providing an innovative solution for employment and increased
income for families, our hope is to change trajectories for adults and their
families and meet the needs of our time.
Per Scholas is an organization with the potential to bolster the recovery
efforts after the dramatic impact of COVID-19, and, now more than ever, it
is important to come together to support the work of organizations like
theirs. None of this would be possible without people like you - friends,
partners, and sponsors, both here in person and in spirit!
As we work to rebuild as a city and as a nation, we need your help, not
just to restore our community back to what it was, but to reimagine what
our city could be. The past eight months have brought to light glaring
injustices experienced by Black, Indigenous and communities of color
across our country for generations. As we reckon with our past and
present, we continue to work towards a future Boston that is healthy, just,
and inclusive. This future will require new and innovative solutions just
like Per Scholas as we continue to serve more than 100,000 Bostonians
each year.
Proceeds from today’s tournament will go to support GreenLight Boston’s
work as we bring in innovative solutions like Per Scholas. We plan to
remain innovative and flexible to the needs of the time, working with
community leaders to identify organizations that can tear down barriers
and open opportunities. And we will do this with our long-time supporters
and champions — especially you!
Safety guidelines for today’s tournament and instructions for accessing
our virtual hole activities can be found in this booklet. We hope you
have a safe, fun day, and enjoy learning more about what the future
holds for GreenLight Boston and Per Scholas!
Enjoy the day!
GREENLIGHT FUND:
INVESTING IN CHANGE
The GreenLight Fund transforms the lives of children, youth and families in high-poverty urban areas through the GreenLight Method.
• Identify critical unmet needs
• Import innovative, entrepreneurial programs that can have a significant, measurable impact, and
• Galvanize local support to help programs reach and sustain impact in the new city.
We call our approach the GreenLight Method. The GreenLight Method is a five-part process that focuses our investments where they will make the most
impact. It’s how we stay nimble enough to address pressing needs and seize opportunities as they arise.
WE DISCOVER
We assess the local landscape to discover
opportunities for transformation: urgent
issues that are currently not being directly
addressed, and where smart, effective
approaches would make a significant
difference in the lives of low-income children
and families.
WE SCOUT
We search the country for the most effective
solutions: the nonprofits that are creating
new ways to deliver services, connect with
their clients and sustain their work.
WE SELECT
We look at hundreds of nonprofits each year.
Through rigorous due diligence we select the
nonprofit that is the best fit for the
community—that meets identified needs
with innovation and impact that can be
successfully replicated.
WE INVEST
We invest our funds, time and passion. Our
community connections and strategic
advice help organizations ramp up and start
producing direct, meaningful change in the
community. We continue this support so that
each organization can thrive over time.
WE MEASURE
We measure the growth and effectiveness of
our investments and share that information
with investors, partners and the local
community
GREENLIGHT’S
SELECTION!
GREENLIGHT FUND: Meeting Community Needs with Proven Solutions
STEP 1:
DISCOVER
MEET THE PER SCHOLAS LEADERSHIP TEAM
The GreenLight Method, a five-part process, provides a focused approach to making
investments where they will have the most impact. It’s how we stay nimble enough
to address pressing needs and seize opportunities as they arise.
We are an on-the-ground partner who deeply cares about our community. To ensure
early and long-term success, the GreenLight Fund provides significant resources
and strategic support during a portfolio organization’s first years in Boston. Each
portfolio organization continues as part of the GreenLight Boston family thereafter.
The latest addition is Per Scholas.
Adults of all ages deserve well-paying jobs and careers. We are excited to welcome
Per Scholas to the Greater Boston community.
STEP 5:
MEASURE
STEP 2:
SCOUT
Robin Nadeau — Managing Director, Greater Boston
Robin is a servant leader who creates opportunity, fosters social change, and grows collaboration. She has over
20 years experience in workforce development, education, and community development — both domestically
and internationally —having served communities in over twenty states, as well as in Ukraine and Poland. She is
passionate about creating access and opportunity for people who face barriers to employment.
Her work includes past positions of leadership at nonprofits, including School and Main Institute, Year Up, and Goodwill
Industries International, leading program design, management, and organizational growth, as well as facilitating social
change and partnership efforts at national, regional and local levels. She has experience facilitating and coaching leaders in
education, nonprofits, and business, and growing long-term partnerships between the public and private sectors. The crux
of Robin’s work has always been systems-building partnership efforts, skill building, collaborative leadership, and crosssector
collaboration.
PER SCHOLAS: Plans for Boston
Under the leadership of the Per Scholas Greater Boston team, more than 800 adults
will receive free training and preparation for a career in IT over the next four years.
Founded in 1995 in the Bronx, Per Scholas was created to bridge the digital divide by reconditioning old computers and
giving them away to schools and families in need. As part of this mission, they trained adults from the community
to recondition computers. Holding on to talent from the community was difficult — they realized that residents,
once completing Per Scholas training, were leaving for better paying jobs, taking with them the skills employers
desperately needed. More than two decades later, Per Scholas has evolved to a national organization, opening doors
to transformative technology careers for individuals from often overlooked communities in about a dozen cities. This
year, Per Scholas enrolled its 10,000th student. 87% of graduates are people of color and 31% are women.
Plinio Ayala — CEO and President
Plinio became President and CEO of Per Scholas in November 2003 after having served as Vice President of Operations with
oversight for the bulk of Per Scholas’ programs. Today he leads the organization in its national expansion. Plinio previously
served as Director of Program Operations at SOBRO,
and, before that, as Chief Program Officer at Jobs
for Youth. In 2012, he joined a diverse group of
stakeholders with decades of experience in New
York City’s workforce system to develop a blueprint
for the new Mayor, re-envisioning the New York City
Workforce System. Plinio has more than 20 years of
nonprofit management experience and is deeply
committed to the fight against poverty. When not
at Per Scholas, Plinio spends time with his three
children and wife...and the New York Mets.
WELCOME
Weston
Golf Club
1
PAR 4
A Donald Ross Course
Since 1894, The Weston Golf Club has earned its
reputation for honoring the skill of the game of golf.
The Par 72, 18-hole golf course was originally designed by
Donald Ross and is the focal point of the club.
Although the Club opened in 1894, the current location
was built in 1916-1917. Donald Ross designed the original nine
holes and the expanded par-71 layout, which opened in 1923.
The two newest holes (11 and 12, designed by Geoffrey
Cornish) were added in 1965. These replaced a very
short par 3 and one par 4, and brought the course to
its current par-72 layout. Improvements during
the 1990’s included new tees on 16 and 17.
1
The first hole at Weston is a straight forward opening par 4
that can be reached in two shots with a good drive. A player
that avoids the bunkers to the left of the fairway and the
heavy rough on the right will be rewarded. The green is well
guarded by bunkers to the left and short right but Donald Ross
has created lots of room to run up on longer shots.
2PAR 5
3PAR 3
The second hold at Weston is a demanding 3-shot,
straightaway par 5. A drive in the fairway allows the player
to carefully navigate the layup area that is heavily bunkered.
The third shot is played uphill to a tiered green,
with a severe false front. Depending on the hole location,
the approach shot can be difficult and putting as well
if you are not on the proper level.
2 3
The third hole at Weston is a long, downhill par 3 has a
classic look of a New England, Donald Ross golf hole.
The green is surrounded by a collection area on the left
side and is protected by a large bunker on the right.
The green slopes from rear-left to front-right and it may
be difficult for a player to control their speed.
4PAR 4
5PAR 3
The fourth hole at Weston is a long par 4 that will test even
the best of players. The landing zone is guarded by a very
penalizing fairway bunker. A good drive down the left side will
leave a short to mid iron into one of the most difficult putting
surfaces at Weston. The green is guarded by bunkers both to
the left and front right, with a narrow, steep collection area
behind the green. There is a large mound in the middle of the
putting surface that creates many interesting hole locations.
4 5
The fifth hole at Weston is the final hole in a stretch of long
and demanding shots that a player faces to start their round.
This is the most demanding tee shot of all the par 3’s here at
Weston. The green is raised and heavily bunkered with
a treacherous chipping area to the right of the green.
Birdies are rare, and pars are always a good score.
6PAR 5
7PAR 4
The sixth hole at Weston is a classic risk/reward par 5.
The player must decide if they want to be aggressive and take
their drive over the mound, left of the landing zone.
Players may also play short of the mound or to the right.
Although it’s a huge advantage, the tee short does not require
a long drive, but rather a well-positioned drive. Reachable in
two shots, this large green slopes from back to front with a
steep false front that will challenge the player with multiple
shot varieties and a difficult putting surface.
6
7
The seventh hole at Weston is the club’s signature hole.
The hole lends itself to either a conservative or aggressive
tee shot. An aggressive play off the tee allows for a short iron
or wedge into a green that slopes back to front, favoring the
player. This is a great birdie opportunity with a good tee shot
in the fairway. The green is severely sloped from back left to
front right which places a premium on your approach shot.
8PAR 4
9PAR 4
The eighth hole at Weston is a classic short par 4 with
a narrow fairway. Trees and a rocky landscape on the right
side challenge the player to hit a precise tee shot.
Then the player is faced with a short iron or wedge approach
to a perched, narrow, and two-tiered green that is very
difficult to putt if the approach is not placed properly.
8 9
The ninth hole at Weston is a very demanding finish to
the front 9. The player faces a downhill tee shot to a narrow,
sloping fairway into a prevailing wind. The green is receptive
to approach shots due to its severe slope from rear left
to front right, but is very treacherous to putt.
10
PAR 3
11
PAR 4
The tenth hole at Weston is a beautiful mid-range par 3,
with par always being a good score. While it requires a
modest 165 yard shot, balls that aren’t hit to the putting
surface are very difficult to get up and down. The green
is raised and falls off on all sides with deep bunkers
guarding the front left and front right. The putting surface
is heavily contoured and difficult to read.
10
11
The eleventh hole at Weston has water to the right of the
fairway that also needs to be carried on a player’s approach
shot to the green. A good drive off the tee to the left or
short off the pond is faced with a long approach. This long
and gradually sloping green is guarded on both sides
by bunkers and is the number 2 handicap hole.
12
PAR 3
13
PAR 4
The twelfth hole at Weston is a great birdie opportunity
that is sandwiched between two difficult par 4’s. Players have
the option between hitting a short or a longer and aggressive
tee shot. The approach shot is played over a pond to a large
green with a severe false front and bunkers on either side.
12
The thirteenth hole at Weston is a bunkerless, dog leg left
par 4 that is one of the most difficult holes on the course.
The blind fairway bends to the left between the trees that
requires a long drive to reach the green in two shots.
The approach shot is placed to a raised green that has
two tiers and many subtle breaks which can make it one
of the most difficult putting surfaces on the course.
14
PAR 5
15
PAR 4
The fourteenth hole at Weston is a beautiful par 5 that
is reachable in two for long hitters. There is plenty of room
to drive the ball, but a drive that is hit left or right will have
a difficult time navigating the bunkers of the layup area.
The approach shot is played to a punchbowl style green
that is surrounded by bunkers and collection areas.
14 15
The fifteenth hole at Weston is a heavily bunkered, mid-range
par 4 with out of bounds to the left over the stone wall.
The player has the option to hit a fairway wood or hybrid
off the tee to avoid these obstacles. The approach shot is
played to a raised green that is severely sloped from rear
left to front right with a false front. It is paramount that
players stay below the hole on their approach shot.
16
PAR 4
17
PAR 3
The sixteenth hole at Weston is a great par 4 with
our signature logo tree just to the right of the player’s landing
zone. The player must avoid a serious of deep, penalizing
bunkers just to the left of the fairway. The approach shot
is played to a very small, classic Donald Ross turtleneck
green. This green is difficult to hold from anywhere other
than the fairway. The green slopes from back to front
and is very difficult to putt.
16
17
The seventeenth hole at Weston is a downhill par 3
that is guarded by bunkers in the front left
and right with a collection area to the rear left
and directly behind the green.
A tee shot to the center of this green
will give a player a great
opportunity at birdie.
18
PAR 5
The eighteenth hole at Weston is a reachable par 5
with a penalizing cross bunker that guards the right side
of the green. The green is two tiered from back to front
that has a noticeable spine that runs down the midsection,
separating the left and right side of the green.
