A landscape plan for a natural play area at Rawhiti Domain was recently approved by the Coastal-Burwood Community Board. A Government shovel-ready grant of $580,000 will help Eastern Community Sport and Recreation and the Guardians of Rawhiti to develop their joint vision for the area. “Nature play is the perfect place for imagination, exploration and physical play,” a city council staff report read. “There is research to support the positive links between direct experiences in nature and children’s mental, emotional and physical health and well-being.” The existing playground beside the tennis court will reach the end of its life within the next five to 10 years and will be removed once the time has come. An opportunity rose to enhance the domain as the area already had natural materials which can be used as playground equipment. The existing wooded sand dunes between the athletics track and golf course provided an area with “wild and natural character.” Currently used for exploring, walking and biking, it will be retained and enhanced with additional native plantings which will encourage butterflies to the area. Logs, stumps and boulders already there will be used as a feature for play, including an accessible fort, tee-pee village, slide, timber merry-go-round, log steps, net nests and a woodland garden. The play surface will be made from recycled rubber tyres. The amount of plastic in the play area will be limited. Using recycled plastic for park furniture such as seating and tables were considered, but timber was chosen to keep in character of the play space. However, additional shade, CCTV cameras, lighting, rubbish bins, a park barbecue and an area for wet play were outside the budget and scope for the project. Construction is expected to be completed by October this year.
