4 CONTENTS
Welcome to the April 2021 edition of The Eckington and
Killamarsh Doorsteppa.
We are absolutely delighted to be back! We’ve all
experienced a winter like no other, and now the better
weather and (fingers crossed) better times are ahead
of us..
Local events are slowly returning to the community and
we aim to include plenty of upcoming activities as the
months progress.
Many people will recall the Channel 5 show ‘Skin A & E’.
They are now looking for more participants for their
second series! Details of how to apply can be found in
our Notices Section on page 31. There’s also an update
on the Clowne Gala held annually at Heritage High
School, as well as details of getting involved with local
litter picks.
In our Monthly Focus in this edition, we point our
attention towards the origins of April Fools, and also
look at International Jazz Day which is April 30. Check
out page 23 for more.
We have news that Killamarsh Sports Centre is set to be
given a new lease of life. £1m is to be invested to
improve the facility. See more info in our Council News
on page 15.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our local
contributors, advertisers, distributors and of course our
loyal readers. These recent months have been difficult
for everyone but we are delighted to be back!
For any company, trade, or individual thinking of giving
your service a boost - please consider our affordable yet
effective way to reach customers throughout this and
many other areas. Do not hesitate to get in touch and
give us a try.
Finally, if you would like a community/non-profit event
to be listed for free in May’s edition, please email
thedoorsteppa@gmail.com. All we ask is that you
provide exact wording before our deadline, and space
permitting, we will be happy to include the details.
Have a fantastic month!
10 TAROTSCOPES
Karen Glazier
www.karenglaziertarot.co.uk
ARIES 21 March - 20 April
Someone, or something, is set to make a huge impact on
you, heart, mind, body and soul. Not before time! The worst of a
situation is behind you and the future looks decidedly brighter. On
the other hand someone is reluctant to relinquish the hold they
have over you and will continue to control a situation. Walk away.
It’s not your failure it’s down to your survival. You’ll regroup and
come back stronger than before.
LIBRA 24 September - 23 October
Yet again, you appear to have been right! What a clever
bunny you are! Sadly, this isn’t the time for sitting back on your
laurels. You are allowed moments to be, quietly, pleased with
yourself but there’s still work to be done. Best get on! Continue to
plan for a brighter financial future ensuring all bases are covered.
Be balanced, honest and fair in your dealings. Legal matters
require your full attention to every detail.
TAURUS 21 April - 21 May
Time for heartfelt discussions with your other half. Prepare to
listen as well as talk. This is most important if you’re to traverse a
new path together and do it harmoniously. It could well be the
start of something big but it now requires baby steps and a
strength and determination to succeed. Not everything will be
plain sailing but, eventually, you come together on the right path
with your joint goals, clearly, in sight.
SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November
Standards and principles! Are you living up to your own or
those of others? Time to reassess past actions and behaviours.
It’ll be six of one and half a dozen of the other. As one phase ends
take some time to catch your breath before moving on to the next
one. A whole new world is waiting to be explored. Some tears are
inevitable but you know the steps to take to heal your world.
GEMINI 22 May - 21 June
At last! The opportunity to show the world exactly what you’re
capable of and The Universe will push you down the path to success.
Obviously, this is going to involve a degree of graft. Nothing you can’t
handle! Home provides a warm, loving, environment to counter any
excess demands. Make sure you get plenty of opportunity to spend
time there. It recharges the batteries, refocuses the mind and
facilitates a speedy reaction to challenges arising.
CANCER 22 June - 23 July
Time spent outdoors blows the cobwebs away and gives
fresh perspective. There’s a reckoning on it’s way and Karma
plays a part as you receive your due, for good or bad, for past
events. You’ll, simply have to accept the outcome. You form a
very close bond with someone in your life and together you go
from strength to strength. Mutual support and appreciation bring a
feeling of contentment not known for some considerable time.
LEO 24 July - 23 August
Life is a bit of a struggle with the last person you’d ever
imagine letting you down. Add to this a degree of tittle tattling over
your actions and you’d be forgiven for wondering if it’s all worth it!
It is, so don’t sink to the depths of despair. Good news arrives
suddenly bringing with it excitement and the need for action. This
is the news you’ve been waiting for! Professional input provides
sound advice.
VIRGO 24 August - 23 September
How you see yourself and how others perceive you aren’t
necessarily one and the same. You like to appear as the calm,
unruffled, soul who can deal with any challenges set before you in a
balanced, logical, way. Beware! This attitude can come across as
selfish, dictatorial, and uncaring. Someone needs true compassion
and understanding. Openly dealing with your own emotions and fears
may be the only way you don’t lose out. You’re not Superman/woman!
SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December
News arrives leading to high end activity so prepare to move
fast and think on your feet. Two heads are better than one and
joining forces with another could prove lucrative. It’s the start of a
new phase and good planning ensures you capitalise on every
opportunity coming your way. Let go of the past once and for all.
Don’t let emotions and old scars stop you. Messy situations
resolve in time. Patience is all.
CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January
Historically, you’ve offered help and support to others and
been an all-round good egg. Karma now steps in to ensure you
get your just rewards as you’re in line for an abundance of love
and gratitude. One man in particular gives you his heart; give him
yours. Be aware though he can’t make everything in life perfect.
There may be one issue involving loss or, perhaps, it’s time to
make new plans and move on.
AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February
You were right!! Whatever it is, potentially around career,
stand proud. You’ve more than proved your worth and others look
up to you in admiration. Take the accolades with charm and
humility and quietly plan your next step. This is no time to rest on
your laurels. Somewhere, someone tries to bully you. Walk away,
regroup, and come back stronger than ever. Most of the hard work
has been completed but there’s more to do.
PISCES 20 February - 20 March
News reaches you which requires you to move fast. The
news may not seem good at first and you could be left feeling
somewhat despondent. Look closer. The smallest, most
insignificant, detail could open up a fabulous opportunity. Don’t
miss it. A course of study is suggested. Maybe it’s time to hone
your skills and turn a hobby into a lucrative side line or have a
complete change of career. Either way you benefit financially.
15 COUNCIL NEWS
New lease of life for Killamarsh Sports Centre
Killamarsh Sports Centre is set to be given a new lease of life, after it was agreed
North East Derbyshire District Council would take over the running of the site
and invest £1m to improve the facility.
The investment will lead to extensive refurbishment,* the
introduction of modern fitness studios and an extended
gym with the latest equipment.
Users of NEDDC leisure centres will now have an even
greater choice of where to keep fit, as the centre will be
added to the existing leisure portfolio, which includes:
Dronfield Sports Centre, Eckington Swimming Pool and
Fitness Centre, and Sharley Park Leisure Centre in Clay
Cross.
Cllr Alex Dale, Leader of North East Derbyshire Council,
said: “We have been working with Killamarsh Parish Council,
which owns the centre, for the last year to look at ways
of improving the leisure, health and wellbeing for our
residents.
“I’m therefore delighted that following talks between the
two sides, the parish council has agreed to transfer the
centre’s operations to us and users will soon be able to
benefit from investment in the facility, together with our
many years of experience in running leisure centres and
all the benefits that brings.”
Killamarsh Parish Council Chair, Steve Clough, said: “We
are delighted to have secured major investment by the
District Council to refurbish our Sports Centre, which not
only improves the centre for the community, but also
ensures its long-term sustainability.”
As well as investing in the building,
we are also committed to investing in the
team at Killamarsh.
The investment will lead to the creation of
new jobs at the centre, in addition to career
development and training opportunities for the
existing leisure centre staff.
Cllr Mark Foster, NEDDC portfolio holder for HR,
said: “We are always keen to create new
employment opportunities in the community and
to progress our staff and make sure they are kept
up-to-date with all the training opportunities
available to them.
“The past 12 months have been difficult for
everyone with the leisure sector being hit
particularly hard. Creating jobs and training
opportunities in the leisure sector will have a
positive impact within the community,
developing staff to reach their full potential.”
* There will be periods of time when the centre
will be closed to allow the works to take place.
Thank you in advance for your patience while
these improvements are carried out.
17 HEALTH & FITNESS
The perfect lockdown exercise
During the first lockdown I rather enjoyed the
enforced laziness. I am a gym member, but I
don’t really love it. After a while though I noticed
that while I didn’t miss weights and running on
the treadmill, I did miss the classes, and the rush
of endorphins that followed. Then one day while
idly flicking through YouTube videos I came
across a ‘hula-fitness’ workout. It looked fun. I
grabbed one of my daughter’s neon hula hoops
and had a go. Much harder than it looked but I
enjoyed it. The next afternoon I had another go
and my teenage daughter joined in. We laughed
a lot (which was a bonus as anyone who has
a teenage daughter will acknowledge) and
afterwards we investigated hula-fitness a bit
more.
Hula hooping is inexpensive, and you can do it
practically anywhere, which was kind of the
point back in lockdown. All you need to get started
is a hoop and room to move.
Standard hula hoops are cheap as chips but after
a few sessions we invested in weighted ones.
Even they didn’t break the bank. Ours cost about
£15 each but even the more expensive ones
were only £40.
It is important to find the right-sized hoop.
Larger hoops are a little easier as a beginner
because you spin more slowly. If using a
weighted hoop, begin with a lighter one (around
0.5-1Kg) and increase the weight as you get
more proficient. Correct form is more important
than weight, and I did have a little accident
where I pulled a muscle in my back for a few days
because in my enthusiasm the first hoop I
bought was too heavy.
There are a few online tutorials that talk you
through how to hula hoop with proper form. To
my delight I found our gym offered a beginner’s
online hula fitness class, so we signed up for that.
With hula hooping, you teach your body how to
move the right way with the hoop while working
your cardiovascular system. Shorter workouts
are better at the start. We started with two
ten-minute sessions a day and worked up from
there.
Basic form and posture
Feet should be a little more than shoulder-width
apart, with one foot slightly in front of the other.
Your back should be straight, and your core
engaged to protect your back.
Hold each side of the hoop around your waist,
resting against your back.
With the hoop against your back, start spinning
the hoop in whichever direction you find easiest.
As the hoop starts to spin, move your waist in a
circular motion to keep the hoop moving. Push
your hips slightly forward as the hoop moves
across your stomach and push back when the
hoop moves across your back. KEEP THE CORE
MUSCLES ENGAGED – TUMMY TIGHT.
If the hoop drops just pick it up and get going
again.
Finally - If you have a back injury or chronic back
pain, check with your doctor or physical
therapist before trying hula hooping to make
sure it’s safe for you.
A MESSAGE FROM KILLAMARSH
CONSERVATION GROUP
Don't bin your empty crisp packets!
21 LOCAL CHRONICLE
Guest of St Giles Parish Church. The bench will
stand proudly for many years to come for future
generations to pause and reflect ‘In Remembrance
2020 – Faced with Courage.’
You may not be aware that crisp packets are not
recyclable through the local authority kerbside
collections and most end up in landfill where they
take up to 80 years to decompose.
There is however a commercial recycling scheme
by TerraCycle UK Ltd that turns this waste into
recycled products. Killamarsh Conservation Group
sought and was given permission by the Bridge
Street Co-op to place a public collection box for
crisp packets in-store and also arranged for a
similar box at Killamarsh Infant and Nursery School
for their pupils and parents to use.
The Group approached St Giles School, and they
too have a box for their children to bring empty
packets to be recycled via the school. We are also
very pleased that Eckington School has joined the
campaign to reduce the number of empty crisp
packets that so often end up as litter on the streets
and in hedgerows. Our thanks to the Manager at
Killamarsh Co-op, and the respective Head
Teachers of the schools for taking part. Only empty
crisp packets (no other snack wrappers) are
recycled through this scheme, but both individual
and multipack wrappers are accepted.
Further recycling information can be found on
Ian Judson, who has lived in the village for several
years and Barry Thompson, a live long resident,
together opened Art and Minds at 43 Bridge Street
in 2017. Their main function is to encourage
members of the community (especially those with
mental health/social problems and loneliness to
use the shop for a chat, a cuppa, to listen to music,
read or participate in art and craft if they wish.
They also have for sale in the shop many gifts and
goodies so call in and I am sure you will find
something you like. They are a not-for-profit
organisation with any money raised from sales
being used to pay the rent and energy bills.
23 MONTHLY FOCUS
April Fool!
The origins of April Fools’ Day are lost way back in
time but like many traditions it probably has a
number of historical roots.
There was certainly a Roman festival called Hilaria
which took place around the time of the spring
equinox. There was also a Medieval ‘Feast of Fools’
although that took place at the beginning of the
year. Throughout history there seems to be a
tradition of transgressing boundaries during such
celebrations: whether male and female, low class
and high class, religious piety and impiety, people
have enjoyed straddling society’s boundaries.
The most popular theory about the ‘modern’ April
Fools’ Day is that it began to take shape in late 16th
century France. At that time, there was a switch to
the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. Prior to
this there had been a New Year’s week (March
25th-April1st), and under the Gregorian system,
New Year’s Day fell on January 1st.
As with any change there was some resistance, and
many people stubbornly refused to accept the new
system, continuing to celebrate New Year on
April 1st.
These people were ridiculed and labelled ‘fools’ by
the general populace and were often the butt of
jokes and pranks. They were known as poisson
d’avril, or April fish, possibly because a naïve young
fish is easily caught.
Over the years the custom of prank-playing spread
to the general population and eventually to Britain,
where schoolboy pranks are still the order of the
day, so watch out!
By Tom Hancock
All that Jazz!
International Jazz Day brings together schools, artists,
historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the
world to celebrate and learn about jazz.
Jazz began in the early twentieth century in New Orleans,
in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The port of New Orleans
meant the area was a melting pot of different
nationalities and their musical influences: Spanish folk
music, French military band music, Ragtime, European
ballroom dance music, and Blues music all had an impact
on the birth of Jazz.
Jazz wasn’t written down in
the same way as classical
music; the styles and tunes
evolved as they were
passed on by ear. Black
musicians in particular,
were for the most part not classically trained, and began
to express themselves through jazz. These musically agile
instrumentalists and singers improvised around a main
melody, often the popular folk and blues tunes of the
era, creating a rich and exciting new blend of sound.
International Jazz Day - April 30th
Although the ‘Jazz Age’ was in the 1920s, jazz never went
away, it evolved through various incarnations. Talented
soloists like Louis Armstrong pushed jazz in the direction
of virtuosic improvisers, weaving their music around
each other. Swing was a smoother, more easy-listening
sound, popularised by the pianist and composer Duke
Ellington. This was followed in the 40s and 50s by the
Latin influences of Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with
other musicians to bring jazz into the mainstream.
Charlie Parker pioneered modern jazz (be-bop) which
challenged many listeners with its complex
experimentations in rhythm and harmony. Miles Davis
on the other hand developed a more gentle, understated
style. Free jazz ignored all the previous rules and
constraints on harmony and structure which many
people disliked.
During the past 50 years jazz evolution has accelerated
through jazz fusion – which fuses jazz solos with other
musical styles - and acid jazz, which draws on soul, funk,
disco and hip-hop. Well known pioneering acid jazz
groups include 'Jamiroquai', and ‘The Brand-New
Heavies'.
29 HISTORY
I have recently come across an article in The Voice
newspaper from September 1976 which was
written by its Editor the late Dave Froggatt. Dave
was renowned in the village for many, many years
for his humourous takes on village issues both in
prose and poetry. ‘Killamarsh Council’ were often
his target.
This article was written during the water shortage
of 1976 during the heatwave that summer with his
usual humour and wit.
HOW YOU CAN HELP SAVE WATER NOW
Following the official recognition of the state of the
drought, an emergency meeting of Killamarsh
Council was called to discuss the situation and adopt
suitable measures.
By an almost unanimous vote it was agreed that the
Common Market could not be held responsible, but
reservations were made regarding the deleterious
effect of decimalization, coupled with the constant
floating of the pound.
To offset the high cost of water rationing (cost of
standpipes, water carts etc.) it was decided to effect
distribution of the ration once a week in the form of
blocks of ice. These could be stored by the
consumer and thawed out as necessary. It was
pointed out that there were residents without a
refrigerator and these were advised to stack
the blocks of ice in the bath (first removing the coal)
and allow the cold tap to maintain a steady drip
on to the ice.
Encouragement is to be given to the formation of
communal bath parties, reminiscent of the war-time
street efforts. Holes would be dug at strategic
points, lined with polythene, and the entire
population of the larger streets could bathe together
once a fortnight. Smaller streets would have to
make do with a more intimate, but none-the-less
effective, communal rub-down with wet flannels.
N.C.B. Westthorpe report a profit so far this year,
mainly due to the sale of surplus (once used) bath
water, much in demand for car radiators due to its
self-sealing qualities. This is likely to cease on the
temporary closing of the baths with the adoption of
the car-wash scheme whereby miners are taken by
bus to the automatic car wash. Batches of up to 20
miners can nip through revolving brushes in the time
taken to clean one car, averaging out at a water
consumption of one cupful per miner. Surface
workers are expected to ablute at a commensurately
quicker rate to maintain output and productivity.
For the duration of the drought, it was resolved that
the library shall issue books only by authors in the
A-G and P-Z sections. The closure of the H-O section
should result in immediate water saving.
Dave
Froggatt
A bus at
the Pond
The Woodall Pond Management Committee are to
be congratulated. Their various methods of water
conservation, involving anglers being required to
squeeze each fish landed (saving 20 per cent)
employing bird-scarers to stop them drinking (saving
20 per cent) and anti-evaporation polythene covers
(saving 75 per cent), are all working well.
As these measures result in a total saving of 115
per cent, they are now stockpiling water. It is an
impressive sight to see accumulated water heaped
above the banks. The local bus company is running
excursions to the pond and it proving quite a tourist
attraction.
Despite some success in village efforts to conserve
water, it was finally decided that a concerted civic
effort should be made to pray for rain. As the Clerk
to the Council has some connections in this field, it
was left to him to contact the necessary authority.
This article is reproduced with the kind permission
of the Froggatt family and has been edited for
reasons of space.
Halfway Litter Pickers
A big thank you to everyone who has taken part in
our Sunday morning litter picks over the last few
weeks.
We have seen an increase in people wanting to help
every week since we started and we have managed
to make a great improvement in a number of areas.
The small wooded area and paths below Halfway
Junior School are looking lovely. We have tackled
the area around the school and also either side of
the football pitch and the Streetfields area.
Local children are getting involved which is
wonderful and we hope this number increases over
the weeks and months to come.
31 NOTICES
Clowne Gala
The Clowne Gala will not be
taking place this year.
The Clowne Gala which is an event held at Heritage
High School every July has unfortunately had to
announce that it will not be taking place this year.
The organisers who put on stalls, activities for all ages,
and live music every year have said that due to the
pandemic it is too early to start planning a public
event. However they are optimistic about the return
of the Gala in 2022 so keep an eye out for further
notices.
We will put together regular updates in ‘The
Doorsteppa’ so watch this space!!
If you know of an area around Halfway that needs
a ‘spring clean’ please get in touch and get
involved if you have the time!
You can find the S20/21 Litter Pickers on Facebook
Hope to see you all soon!!
37 BOOKS
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry
by Rachel Joyce
Retirement is meant to be relaxing, isn’t it? You
do what you love doing and enjoy yourself. But
what if you suddenly receive a letter out of the
blue? A woman who worked in your office many
years ago has cancer and is dying. She just wants
you to know. This touches you for reasons you
can’t quite explain, so you write her a note to say
that you are sorry to hear that. Putting on your
coat and your yacht shoes you leave with the
note. Your destination? The post box. Just as far
as the end of the road.
And so, starts Harold Fry’s extraordinary journey:
627 miles in 87 days. With no plan, other than to
reach Queenie, he sets off on a journey of faith.
Scribbling on the note he tells her to wait for
him. This debut novel from radio and TV writer,
Rachel Joyce, will take you on a gentle journey
with Harold and the various people he meets
along the way. Totally unprepared for what he
will encounter, his faith in positive thinking
keeps him going as he learns more about his life
and relationships with his wife and son.
Post-apocalyptic and dystopian literature is
perennially popular with teens and adults alike,
and the events of 2020 only served to increase
its attraction. The Maze Runner was initially
published in 2009 but came to prominence with
the release of the film adaptation in 2014.
Thomas is a teenager who awakes to find himself
in a box in a place called the Glade. He has no
memory of who he is or how he came to be here,
but he is thrown into this new community, and
as a reader so are you. Before long you become
familiar with the terminology used by the boys and
you feel as if you are a Glader along with them.
As Thomas adjusts to his new environment, he
learns about the Maze which surrounds the
Glade. Each day the walls open and a select
group of runners spend daylight hours exploring
and mapping it. It is a race against the clock
because at sunset the Grievers – giant robotic
creatures – enter the Maze and they are deadly.
The walls close to protect the community and
overnight the structure of the Maze changers,
leaving the runners to start again in the morning.
The big mystery is why. Why are Thomas and the
other boys there and why do the Grievers come
out to get them? Why do the walls in the Maze
change and will the runners ever solve it?
However, more importantly why has a girl been
sent to the Glade and why has all communication
with the outside world suddenly stopped?
This is the first book in an engaging series which
develop the story and characters beyond the
original theme.
Make your vote count!
On Thursday 6 May 2021, the following elections will
take place across the North East Derbyshire area:
• Police and Crime Commissioner for the Derbyshire
area
• Derbyshire County Council
There are seven county electoral divisions across North
East Derbyshire - Clay Cross South, Clay Cross North,
Dronfield East, Dronfield West and Walton, Eckington
and Killamarsh, Sutton and Wingerworth & Shirland.
There may also be some by-elections taking place in
your ward/parish area.
There are several ways to have your say in these
elections. You can vote:
• In person at a polling station
• By post
• By appointing someone you trust to vote on your
behalf known as a proxy vote
The last date to register for
these elections is
19 April 2021 and the
deadline to apply for a postal
vote is 5pm on 20 April 2021.
We will be putting arrangements in place to help you
stay safe at the polling station.
You can expect to see measures that you’ve become
used to in shops and supermarkets over recent
months such as hand sanitiser, floor markings and face
coverings.
Should you have any questions in relation to
voting at the forthcoming elections,
please either contact the
Electoral Services Team by email
elections@ne-derbyshire.gov.uk or by telephone
01246 217069 or 217069 or alternatively please visit
our website for the latest information.
43 GARDENING
Following on from last month’s list of essential
garden tools for beginners I thought I’d explain
about the humble hoe. When I first started
gardening, I didn’t really understand how to use
one. There are a couple of varieties of hoe and they
are used in different ways, and they really are your
friend at this time of year.
The hoe is actually one of the most ancient garden
tools and came before the plough. It’s mentioned
in Egyptian art, the Code of Hammurabi and in
the Bible.
The reason spring is a great time to put your hoe to
good use is because right now is when the annual
weeds (the ones that self-seed freely and pop up all
over the place every year) have started to germinate.
The aim when hoeing, aim to sever the top growth
from the roots, just below the soil surface, then
leave it in the sun to dry out and die. Hoeing is best
done when the soil is dry as this creates a ‘dust
mulch’ which inhibits the germination of new weeds.
I prefer a hoe with a long handle because it’s better
for preventing back pain. I also have a short handled
hoe known as an ‘onion hoe’ for closely planted
areas. A shorted handle gives more control, so you
don’t damage your prized plants.
It’s important to note that hoeing only kills the
annual weeds, not the deep-rooted perennial
weeds, those need to be dug up by hand.
There is also a tool called a Dutch hoe. This is used
by sweeping it smoothly over the soil so that the
surface is just ‘brushed’. If used correctly it slices the
tops from the weeds. It’s actually simple to use but
you do need to practice your technique. Slice the
tops of weeds by bringing the hoe towards you,
altering the angle to accommodate slopes. When
you turn over a Dutch hoe you can use it to make a
shallow trench called a seed drill to sow larger
seeds, like peas into. Larger seeds are better
because they need to be covered well.
Your hoes need to be kept sharp and well
maintained for maximum effectiveness. I use a
metal file to both clean and sharpen, but you can
buy sharpening stones reasonably cheaply and they
are easy to use.
Happy gardening
45 RECIPE
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 25 minutes
Serves: 2
Ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, finely sliced
120g Chorizo, sliced
1 yellow pepper, finely sliced
1 orange or red pepper, finely sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
½ tsp sweet smoked paprika
400g can chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp capers (optional)
2 large eggs (4 if you’re really hungry!)
2 tbsp fresh chopped flat-leaf parsley
2 thick slices of bread
for 5 minutes. Add the peppers and cook for a
further 2-3 minutes until they soften too. Stir in the
crushed garlic and sweet smoked paprika, cook for
another 1 minute. Pour in the tomatoes and add
the capers, lower the heat and simmer for 10
minutes, until the tomatoes reduce and thicken a
little.
Make two or four wells in the thick sauce and
gently crack an egg into each.
Place the pan into the preheated oven for 10
minutes, or until the whites are set but the yolks
are still runny.
Towards the end of the cooking time, toast the
bread.
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Use a frying
pan with an ovenproof handle. Heat the olive oil,
then add the onion and chopped Chorizo. Soften
Removes the eggs from the oven, scatter with the
parsley and serve with the toasted bread, drizzled
with a little olive oil.
