Cleaning up
the community
When Cheryl Arick (top right) woke up
in the morning on April 10, she said she
was fully human. But by the time she
began participating in a massive
cleanup effort throughout the city of
Grove City, she transformed into a
human and mountain goat hybrid. “I
didn’t expect to be climbing over
uneven rocks,” she said as she picked
up trash wrapped around a branch at
Gantz Park, “but so far my feet and balance
haven’t failed me yet.” Arick was
among more than 200 people representing
45 groups who took part in the
Council seeks
clarity on fences
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
Grove City Council is considering legislation
that deals with privacy fencing.
At the April 5 meeting, council voted to
postpone an ordinance that would define
what is a privacy fence and restrict their
use.
According to Grove City Mayor Richard
“Ike” Stage, a privacy fence has not been
defined in the city’s code since it was
adopted in the mid-1970s. He said city officials
have been in numerous confusing situations
regarding fencing with homeowner’s
associations and people wanting to
build.
“This is an attempt to give clarity,” said
Stage. “What is a privacy fence and how is
it used?”
Stephen Smith, the city’s law director,
said residents will not have to tear down a
current privacy fence.
Despite carrying around heavy buckets and bags full of trash, Jim Swanson, Bev
Killian and Chris Killian (pictured from left to right) are in good spirits as they make
their final sweep along Gantz Road. The members of the Grove City Citizens Police
Academy Alumni Association said though it was dirty work, they were glad to do
their part to keep the city safer. The cleanup event on April 10 was organized by the
Keep Grove City Beautiful Committee and the Adopt-A-Street and Park families. City
officials said they hope to make it an annual event.
Southwest Public Libraries (SPL) has partnered with
the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) to distribute free
at-home COVID-19 test kits. The antigen rapid-test kits
have been purchased by the state and are offered free of
charge to the public on a voluntary basis.
The test is self-administered at home during a free session
with a telehealth proctor and offers results in approximately
15 minutes. To use, patrons will need an email
address, internet connection, and a device with a
webcam.
Those interested in picking up a test kit should
download the NAVICA app from Google Play or the
iOS App Store. The app enables users to find pickup
sites and receive a pickup pass, manage their
health profiles, and store test results for a limited
time.
The library is offering kits for no-contact pickup
only. To request a kit for pickup, patrons should:
1.Download the NAVICA app from Google Play
or iOS App Store and create an account.
2.Call the library and request a test kit for pickup.
3.Come pick up requested kit (labeled with last
name) from no-contact tables near the entrance.
4.Take the test kit home to complete. Users will
need to go to ohio.emed.com to start their telehealth
session. The telehealth proctor will guide
the user through collecting the sample and reading
and understanding results.
COUNCIL
Continued from page 1
“Everyone’s fence gets to stay as long as it’s legal,”
said Smith.
City Administrator Chuck Boso said the goal of the
legislation is to allow residents to have privacy and pet
control but to have fencing that is not detrimental to
the appeal of a neighborhood.
“That’s the big challenge,” he said.
According to the legislation, privacy fencing has
become a challenging zoning issue that impacts the
health, safety and welfare of the community and the
city administration would like to enforce stricter standards
to ensure high quality development, safer fencing
requirements, and more appealing neighborhood
aesthetics.
The legislation presented at the council meeting
defines a privacy fence as a barrier to inhibit public
view and provide seclusion and, when viewed at right
angles, having more than 50 percent of its vertical surface
area closed to light and air, constructed of wood
conditioned for exterior use, vinyl, stone, or masonry.
It goes on to say that no fence on any lot, except a privacy
fence, shall be erected more than four feet in
height. The height of a privacy fence shall not exceed
six feet in height or 36 feet in length on each side. The
legislation states that a privacy fence should not be
used to enclose the entire perimeter of the property.
Residents sent comments to the city via its social
media pages. Many were not in favor of the legislation,
not permitted to assist in any part of the test nor provide
any medical or testing advice.
•Users should contact their local health department for
any questions not related to pickup. (Franklin County
Department of Health 614-525-3160.)
•Please do not pick up if you are feeling unwell. A
friend or family member may pick up instead.
The tests are nasal swab antigen tests.
In collaborating with libraries and other organizations
across the state, ODH hopes to make test kits readily
available to everyone in all Ohio counties. The accessibility
of libraries makes them ideal partners.
“Libraries are trusted by their communities and are
available to all,” says Meredith Wickham, director of
Southwest Public Libraries. “By partnering with ODH, we
hope we can help simplify the process for those needing
testing for work, school, travel, or other purposes by providing
easy access to these kits. The SPL team is thrilled
to discover yet another way we can serve our community
during the pandemic.”
The library does not collect nor keep any personal information
in regards to these tests. The telehealth partner
handles all reporting to public health officials as required.
Drive-thru lunch
LifeCare Alliance will host a spring drive-thru
event from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 28, May
12, and May 26 at the Evans Senior Center, 4330
Dudley Ave. in Grove City. Senior citizens (ages 60
plus) can drive by to receive a lunch from LifeCare.
There is no cost but donations are welcome. For more
information, call LifeCare Alliance at 614-437-2854.
saying it is limiting and it would prohibit people from
running a fence over the entire yard if they have a
larger property. Other residents just do not want their
local government telling them what they can and cannot
do with their property. Some residents are in favor
of the legislation because they are tired of looking at
unsightly fencing.
Councilman Aaron Schlabach said the residents
have made it clear to city officials that they do not
favor this legislation.
“We should listen,” he said.
Stage said city officials have listened to the public
and never intended to tell people to tear down their
fences.
“It (the legislation) needs to be fine-tuned,” said
Stage.
Other council members were also on the fence about
the legislation.
Ted Berry said what looks pleasing to one person
may look different to another. He said he would be
more apt to support legislation that deals with the
upkeep of fencing.
Roby Schottke said there are many valid reasons
why people want a stockade fence. He said the city
already has a code to deal with dilapidated fencing and
it is up to the city to enforce it.
Council agreed to postpone the ordinance until the
May 3 meeting for additional clarity.

The traditional cleanup event may be a
thing of the past in Jackson Township.
For more than a decade, the township
has hosted a weekend cleanup event in the
spring and fall at its administrative building
on Hoover Road that allowed residents
of the township, the city of Grove City, and
the village of Urbancrest to offload hundreds
of unwanted household items free of
charge.
“It has been one of our most popular
events,” said Township Administrator
Shane Farnsworth. “It would attract more
than a thousand vehicles and we would collect
tons of residential waste.”
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept
through the state last year, however, the
township cancelled its annual spring and
fall event but established a staggered
cleanup service to take its place.
It turns out the decision to make that
transition was even more popular.
According to Farnsworth, the staggered
cleanup service, which ran from May to
September, received the same amount of
engagement but elicited more positive
feedback overall from the residents.
“They were very appreciative of the convenience
of the extended service,” he said.
“They liked being able to drop off items
before they went to work, or after they
came home, and they liked not having to
worry about having things ready for only a
specific weekend.”
Farnsworth said their feedback has the
township thinking of making this a permanent
change.
“We will have to see what happens
when the pandemic subsides, but for right
now we certainly see the continued benefit
of this service.”
Starting on May 3, residents will once
Hydrant flushing
The Jackson Township Fire Department
will begin its annual hydrant-flushing program
on May 10. This includes hydrants in
Grove City and Urbancrest. The program
will be conducted Monday through Friday
from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., until all areas of
the township have been completed. It is
expected that the flushing will take two to
four weeks.
Hydrant flushing may cause water to
become rusty and to appear discolored.
Although the water is not harmful to drink,
it can cause discoloration of laundry. There
are products on the market, available at
most area pharmacies and grocery stores,
which should remove the rust from clothing
if discolored when washed in the rusty
water.
Spring Shredding Day
The Grove City Spring Shredding Day is
again be allowed to drop off unwanted
household items at the administrative
building, located at 3756 Hoover Road,
Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m., holidays excluded. The service will
run through Sept. 24.
Items accepted include residential bulk
trash, scrap metal and tires. The latter is
limited to four per vehicle. Hazardous
waste will not be accepted, and neither will
batteries.
Residents can also drop off unwanted e-
waste items year-round, but the township
cannot accept monitors and televisions at
this time.
“We’re trying to work something out
where we will be able to accept computer
monitors and television sets in the future,”
said Farnsworth.
There is a new addition to this year’s
cleanup service; residents can bring construction
material and some household furniture
that could be repurposed.
Farnsworth said the township is partnering
with Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore to
repurpose some used or excess material
goods.
“We are trying to keep as many items
out of the landfill as we can,” he said.
Farnsworth said if residents have any
questions regarding the cleanup to call the
office at 614-875-2742, send an email to
info@jacksontwp.org or visit
jacksontwp.org.
The township will also continue to offer
summertime brush pick-up services for
residents in the unincorporated areas. The
dates are set for May 24-28; June 21-25;
July 26-30; Aug. 23-27; and Sept. 20-24.
Farnsworth said he encourages residents
who live in these areas to call the township
office to let them know they plan to participate
in the brush pick-up on one of the
scheduled days.
“We don’t want to miss them,” he said.
Saturday, May 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at
Park Street Intermediate School, 3205
Park St.
The event is for Grove City, Jackson
Township and Urbancrest residents only.
No business shredding accepted. Limit of
five boxes or trash bags per car. All paper
is securely shredded offsite. Masks must be
worn at all times. Residents must retain
their boxes or bags after emptying paper in
Grove City Editor
Garden grows in Grove City
A community garden will be growing in Grove City
thanks in part to a local Boy Scout.
For his Eagle Scout project, 13-year-old Shane
Fuller, decided to work with the Grove City Parks and
Recreation Department to build a community garden
at Fryer Park. The Jackson Middle School student has
been part of Boy Scout Troop 136 in Grove City for
three years.
Fuller said he has always enjoyed gardening and
thought a community garden would be something
other people might enjoy too. He plans to build 30 4x12
foot beds, 20 4x10 foot beds, and four elevated beds for
the elderly or those with physical limitations.
“I was looking at gardens in Columbus and saw
something similar at Franklin Park Conservatory,”
said Fuller of the elevated beds for those who have a
hard time bending down. “I thought it was a good
idea.”
According to Kim Conrad, Grove City Parks and
Recreation director, there are a few privately-run community
gardens in the area, but this will be the first
active publicly operated community garden.
“This gives people an opportunity to get their hands
in soil and be part of the community,” she said.
The community garden at Fryer Park will start
with the 54 beds planned by Fuller. This will be one
quadrant of what Conrad hopes will be a larger garden.
“There is room to grow,” said Conrad. “If there is a
lot of interest, we are hoping to grow.”
Conrad said city officials decided to start at Fryer
Park but could build community gardens at other locations
in the city. She said the garden gives people a
space to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers. It is ideal
for those who live in an apartment or condominium
who may not have space for a garden.
According to Fuller, he and a group of friends, will
build the beds in the upcoming weeks. He said the goal
is to have the community garden up and running by
mid-May.
“I hope people will use it,” said Fuller. “I want the
community to enjoy it.”
The city has already spent about $15,000 on the
project. Conrad said the total cost should be less than
$20,000.
Those interested in a garden plot can register
through the parks and recreation department.
According to Conrad, there may be a fee for a garden
plot, but city administrators are still trying to
determine if there will be a fee and what amount to
charge.
“The fee is still in question,” said Conrad. “It will be
under $50 and it may be refunded at the end of the season
or donated to local organizations.”
Leftover produce from the community garden will
be donated to local food pantries.
For more information on the community garden or
to reserve a plot, call the parks and recreation department
at 614-277-3050 or visit www.grovecityohio.gov.
Making Magical Moments
April 18, 2021 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - PAGE 7
By Christine Bryant
Staff Writer
Thinking about having a yard sale? The good news is
you can get rid of some clutter while restoring hope in a
child’s life.
The Magical Moments Foundation will host Piles for
Smiles, a city-wide event on May 14-16 that will allow
Columbus area homeowners to donate some or all of the
proceeds from their yard sales to the non-profit organization.
The wish-granting foundation serves children with
facial differences that are the result of congenital anomalies,
facial burns or trauma.
Richard Kirschner, chair of plastic and reconstructive
surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital co-founded the
Magical Moments Foundation with his wife, Krista, just
over a year ago. As the director of the Cleft Lip and Palate
Center at the hospital, Kirschner says his life has long
been dedicated to serving children with facial differences
both at home and abroad.
“We saw a real need for Magical Moments,” he said.
“There are literally hundreds of wish-granting organizations
in the U.S. that do the good work of serving children
with life-threatening illnesses, but precious few that help
children with facial differences that threaten the quality of
their life for all of their lives.”
Krista Kirschner, whose background includes healthcare
work at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, serves as the
organization’s executive director. She says kids are growing
up in a world that is increasingly centered on appearance
and that defines beauty in a particular way.
“We need to look no further than the ads on our billboards
and magazines, in the media and on social media,”
she said. “We now even have filters to enhance our facial
appearance on social media and Zoom. This is the world in
which we live.”
Concerns about appearance can affect children’s selfesteem
and put them at risk for mental health disorders
like anxiety and depression, Richard Kirschner said. In
fact, recent studies show that up to 75 percent of children
admit to having been bullied at school and that 25 percent
have experienced cyberbullying.
“With all of this in mind, you can certainly understand
that, for some children living with a facial difference
resulting from a genetic condition, cleft lip and palate or
other congenital craniofacial differences, a birthmark, cancer
treatment or from facial trauma or burns, the world
Sophia, the first Magical Moments recipient, is pictured here
with Rabii Saber, an award-winning pastry chef. Sophia got to
spend the day with the chef and learn tricks of the trade. She
wants to become a pastry chef.
can sometimes be a place of sadness, isolation and
even hopelessness,” he said.
Children born with facial differences and those
living with the scars of facial trauma may endure
the pain of teasing, bullying and isolation, he said.
“For many, appearance-related stigma can
interfere with their healing, their self-esteem and
their quality of life,” he said. “In any form, appearance-related
stigma can shatter dreams and leave
emotional scars that can remain for years.”
The Kirschners founded Magical Moments
Foundation to change all of this, they say by providing
magical moments for those with facial differences.
“Our mission is to restore children’s hope and
self-esteem while also fundamentally changing the
world in which they live,” Krista Kirschner said.
A girl named Sophia became the organization’s
first child to have her wish granted - a trip to Walt
Disney World. The Kirschners say Sophia was born
with a cleft lip and palate in Guizhou, China. She
was adopted by her parents in December of 2010, and
three months later, underwent the first of many surgical
procedures to reconstruct her lip, nose and palate.
On top of the several surgeries and painful recoveries
she endured, her father suddenly died in 2018.
“Magical Moments Foundation recently granted Sophia
the wish of a trip to Walt Disney World with her mother
and her younger brother and sister,” Krista Kirschner
said. “While in Orlando, Sophia, who dreams of becoming
a pastry chef, was also granted the opportunity to spend a
day with Rabii Saber, the executive pastry chef at the Four
Seasons Resort and one of the world’s finest, award-winning
pastry chefs.”
Columbus residents who wish to participate in Piles for
Smiles and donate a portion or all of their yard sale proceeds
to Magical Moments Foundation so that other children
like Sophia can realize their dreams can sign
up on the organization’s website at magicalmomentsfoundation.org
and clicking the “Piles for
Smiles” tab. Families can choose to host their sale
for one, two or all three days.
“We will provide participating households with a
toolkit to help them host their sale,” Richard
Kirschner said.
The toolkit will include signs, price stickers, a
tips and instruction sheet, a Magical Moments cash
donation box for shoppers who want to donate additional
funds and some Magical Moments brochures to help
raise awareness. The homeowner’s contribution is fully tax
deductible, he said.
“By participating in Piles for Smiles, families can dispose
Livestock legislation halted
www.columbusmessenger.com
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Differing versions of an ordinance to prohibit farm
animals and livestock from taking up residence in the
village of Urbancrest has temporarily halted its adoption.
The mix-up was unveiled at the April 13 council
meeting as the third and final reading of the policy
went up for a vote. Before that vote could happen and
turn this policy into village law, Law Director Rodd
Lawrence said that it was not in the “correct legal form
to be approved.”
According to Lawrence, the text of the legislation
was missing the correct legal language and form, thus
making the ordinance unsubstantial.
“There is no substance to this ordinance,” he said.
He then asked the council if they had made any
changes to the ordinance as the same concerns were
expressed last year.
In August, village council introduced its first version
of the ordinance that would prohibit residents
from possessing farm animals or livestock on their
property. It was pulled from the table shortly thereafter
because Lawrence said it was “not in the correct
form.” Additionally, code enforcement officer Randall
Bogue wanted to make clarifications about service animals
within the text.
After Lawrence questioned the latest version, councilwoman
Alicia Wiggins said that the version he had
before him was the wrong version.
“We made changes to that version and I gave an
updated copy to you and the council at the meeting in
December,” she said.
While attending the meeting virtually, Wiggins
read her version of the legislation and Lawrence
agreed that it appeared to be in the correct form. The
problem, however, was that members of the council
and the law director all had different versions of the
legislation.
Because the majority of the council was attending
virtually, copies of the latest version of the legislation
could not be distributed. Instead, the council agreed to
once again table the passage of the legislation until
May so they could “all get on the same page.”
The latest version does include changes from the
version that was presented last year and it is not just
limited to the legal language of the documents. The
version that is slated to be voted upon next month
includes changes to the time residents have to remove
an animal after receiving a cease and desist order (30
days in the first version, 35 days in the latest) and the
exclusion of fines. Wiggins said they did not see the
point of issuing fines as she did not believe they would
be enforced.
Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr. said fines have been
issued and collected before in regard to other ordinances
being violated.
However, he added that residents usually comply to
cease and desist orders, which make the prospect of
fines null.
within the same small town. The photos and information
Spring Auto Care
What your car color says about you
Cars and trucks may be modes of transportation,
but many people see their vehicles as extensions of
their personalities.
The color of a vehicle can say a lot about its driver.
Automotive experts say color affects drivers’ decisions
when they’re buying new vehicles. In 2015, a survey
from PPG Automotive Coatings found the color palette
of black, silver, gray, and white makes up 75 percent of
new cars on the road. White has been the most popular
car color for years, perhaps because neutral tones tend
to look new for years, improving resale value as a
result.
The Pantone Color Institute periodically highlights
popular trends in colors for home decorating, graphic
design, fashion, and much more. Their experts know a
thing about what color can say about a person. Here’s
a look at how drivers may perceive themselves (and
how others view them) based on their color choices in
vehicles, courtesy of Pantone, NerdWallet, Thrillist,
and Today.com.
•White: This color can often project a persona of a
diligent, hardworking person. White is a dependable
color that also is sleek and modern. Many people who
prefer white also like the purity of the color and its perceived
cleanliness.
•Black: Black vehicles have stood the test of time as
status symbols. Those who purchase black cars may
view them as classic and powerful. Black also conveys
elegance. That’s why limousines and hired cars are
often black.
•Silver: Silver cars may have futuristic connotations
because of their metallic hues. Silver vehicles
also can be elegant and prestigious. A certain element
of modernity is associated with silver cars and trucks.
•Gray: People who choose gray vehicles may be less
concerned about status and more interested in a vehicle
that blends in with the crowd. This no-nonsense
hue could be ideal for cautious, even-keeled drivers
who like to go with the flow.
•Blue: Light blue to mid-blue cars convey a sense of
calm and coolness. Blue is a dependable color and may
indicate the person behind the wheel is friendly. Dark
blue can be a confidence-booster and also signal
authority, as many police cruisers and law enforcement
uniforms feature deep blue.
•Red: People who own red cars probably like flash
and attention. They’re likely magnetic personalities
who enjoy standing out in a crowd.
•Green: Green cars indicate owners who have a
strong sense of self and care little about what others
think of them. They may be the people who march to
the beat of their own drums. But the popularity of
green cars peaked in the 1990s, so fewer green cars
may be on the road today than in the past.
A memorial tells the story of your loved ones
to future generations. The experts at Hannigan
Memorials, part of the Modlich Monument
Company, have tips on choosing just the right
monument.
Plan ahead
Aim to purchase a memorial before the emotional
time of losing a loved one. Even with cremations,
there are memorial options, such as
burying cremains and erecting a monument; creating
a cut-out in a monument and sealing the cremains
inside; or using a decorative urn inside a
mausoleum.
“A memorial takes time to complete and place
in the cemetery,” said Chad Sothard, branch manager
of Hannigan Memorials. “We deliver and
install every monument we build, making sure
everything is just right for our customers.”
PAID ADVERTISING
How to memorialize a lost loved one
Match the memorial to your lot
Some cemeteries restrict the size, shape or
material used for memorials. “We have experience
working with a variety of budgets and different
cemeteries to help ensure your final memorial
choice fits your personal taste, budget and cemetery
regulations,” said Sothard.
Personalize your memorial
“We believe a memorial is as unique as the life
it commemorates,” Sothard said. “Our craftsmen
can create any type of memorial, with stones in
any type, color, shape or size.” Customers can
choose their engraving, from standard sandblasting
to hand diamond-etched portraits. Hannigan
also provides computer-generated scale drawings,
so customers can easily visualize their
memorial.
PAGE 16 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - April 18, 2021
Low brow humor can be
found in “under Force”
I am going to begin this movie review
with a visualization session. It will help
you, the reader and potential movie watcher,
determine your level of tolerance for
icky and strange things done in the name
of comedy.
Picture a plateful of chicken cutlets,
boneless and skinless, to be exact. I don’t
want you to think about the best way to
prepare them, just picture it as is. Now,
envision someone shoveling those glistening
bits of flesh into their gaping and gleeful
maw, and then transition into watching
that same person being delicately fed those
unseasoned cuts during a romantic interlude
with someone sporting crab claws in
lieu of typical hands.
If that short, albeit graphic, visualization
session entirely grossed you out and
did not elicit even a small smile, you might
not be the right audience for “Thunder
Force,” an absurdist superhero comedy now
streaming on Netflix. However, if you were
intrigued by its potential and don’t mind
setting your brain to ‘entertained by very
stupid things,’ this might be the right
movie for you.
Much like eating raw or undercooked
meats, I had strong reservations about this
film. Though its original form had a lot of
appeal as it starred Melissa McCarthy and
Octavia Spencer in the superhero roles, it
was the wording on the package that said
“written and directed by Ben Falcone” that
gave me the most pause.
I have nothing against Falcone. I believe
him to be a kind person, but I have also
watched a majority of the films that he has
written and/or directed and come away less
than impressed. While they all have
glimpses of promise, mostly because they
feature his wife and national treasure
Melissa McCarthy, overall, they are lacking.
Though the warning signs were there, I
decided to proceed with “Thunder Force”
because, frankly, I was in the mood to
watch something dumb. And I have to say
that it met my want for stupidity and yet it
slightly exceeded my expectations because
it wasn’t as disappointing as I thought it
would be.
It begins as all superhero films do — with
an origin story. It is the year 1983 and a
massive pulse of interstellar cosmic rays
have struck Earth. While a majority of the
population was unaffected by this most
unusual event, it exclusively granted powers
to those exhibiting the traits of
sociopaths. Needless to say, the following
years have not been so great for the nonmiscreants.
Fast forward to present day and Emily
Stanton (Spencer), a billionaire biotech
genius who lost her parents in a miscreant
attack, has developed a serum to give nonsociopaths
powers to stop their deadly and
destructive reign. But just when it seems
that all of her plans to change the world are
going according to plan, they get sidetracked
by a bulldozing blast from the past.
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
Out of the blue, Emily gets a text message
from her ex-best friend Lydia Berman
(McCarthy) who wants her to attend their
high school class reunion. Though she
makes a promise to attend, she gets sidetracked
with her studies and forgets the
date. Much to her surprise, Lydia shows up
at her high-rise complex in Chicago in
order to take her there but things quickly
go astray. According to Emily, Lydia has
always been something of a disaster, a
loyal friend, but someone who always
wants to mess about where there are so
many serious things going on. So, it really
shouldn’t have been a surprise when she
leaves Lydia unattended on the premises
and comes back to find her strapped to the
molecular changing machine and injected
with the serum that gives people superpowers.
With Lydia sequestered in a complex,
and with Emily undergoing her own transformation
to become invisible, one might
think plenty of time would be given to them
repairing their friendship and finding a
way to become an effective force to battle
the miscreants by using their own
strengths and weaknesses. But no. Most is
spent on repetitive scenes of Lydia’s treatments
and tests, and repetitive jokes that
don’t land the first, or the second, or the
third time they are said.
When the action finally gets underway,
it doesn’t land that well either, especially
with the way the fight scenes were staged.
With the negative aspects, one might
wonder what makes this film watchable, or
even somewhat enjoyable. And to that I say
it’s the heart between McCarthy and
Spencer and the side characters which
include a miscreant woman (Pom
Klementieff) who blows things up with her
hands, a “half-creant” named The Crab
(Jason Bateman) and a would-be mayoral
candidate (Bobby Cannavale) who moonlights
as a decent person. With these three,
you get the sharpest dialogue, the funniest
puns, and great scenes of physical comedy,
such as The Crab scuttling away during a
gunfight.
Were my brain not set in an ‘entertained
by low brow humor’ kind of mood, I’m not
sure I would have found much to like about
“Thunder Force.” I mean, even at that setting
I could see how much it could be
improved had it leaned more fully on the
absurdist humor. But still, it gave me quite
a few laughs and I probably would watch it
again given a chance. And that is more
than I can say about some of Falcone’s
other theatrical attempts.
