4 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA
Dear Reader
Well, here we
are already
with our first
edition for
2021 and it’s
hard to believe
another year
has gone by.
Many people are
pleased we have
finished with 2020
with all the shutdowns and
a different way of life due to
Covid 19. Let’s hope the 2021
will be a good year for us all.
It’s cold in January in most
of Spain, but It is winter!
While average high
temperatures range
from 52 to 61 degrees
Fahrenheit (11 to 16
degrees Celsius),
and some low
dips, weather is
unpredictable,
so you might see
some extremes.
Romance is in the
air as Valentine’s
day will soon be with
us and there are many
restaurants in Out & About
magazine for you to choose
where to take “Your Lady”
or “Your Man” for a great
evening.
This month celebrates Burns
Night on Monday 25th January.
Did you know that every birth
month has a flower and that
every flower has a unique
meaning and tells a story?
The January birth flowers are
DEAR READER
the carnation and snowdrop.
January’s Birthstone:
Amethyst. The two zodiac
signs associated with January
are Capricorn and Aquarius.
Capricorns, who are born from
January 1 - January 19 are one
of the zodiac’s most energetic
and hardworking of signs.
Those born from January 20 to
January 31 are members of the
Aquarius sign.
As a Capricorn born on January
1st, you tend to be ambitious
but also thoughtful. Life is
an adventure and this needs
to be reflected in everything
you do. Seeking actively for
the reactions of others, you
want to be surrounded by
likeminded people.
Chinese New Year is
Friday 12th February
and begins a year
of the Ox which
occurs every 12
years.
The year of
the Metal Ox
brings career
advancement,
success in business,
prosperity, and
wellness for all zodiac
signs. The Ox year of 2021 is
under the influence of the metal
element. This year predicts new
career opportunities, so don’t
let anxiety or negative thinking
affect you.
Remember you are never alone
with an “Out & About Costa
Blanca” magazine. Keep happy
and healthy. Until next time
always keep positive.
Yes, you read that correctly, despite
the current health situation, we’re
back to selling properties just like
yours and we have a growing list of
enquiries from people to buy right
here in the Northern Costa Blanca. In
fact, its even been recently reported
in the British Press that overseas
enquiries are 30% up compared to
last year with people wanting to get
out of the UK before Brexit.
Of course it’s been tough for
businesses since March, but we’re
taking this opportunity to look
inwards and see how we can
improve to meet our simple goal:
to sell your property as quickly as
possible whilst achieving the highest
price.
When it comes to Javea, we have
decided to move offices and will
soon be re-opening in an even
better location to be able to serve
buyers and sellers even better. So,
yes, the port office is closed, but
keep your eyes out for a new office
opening soon!
You might be wondering about
pricing, and rightly so. We’re
pleased to note that whilst we’re

ROCCO
ROCCO
Rocco is still eagerly awaiting his forever home. He
would so love a family to look after. He is around 6
years old and quite a strong dog who needs some
training as he was left in the garden and ignored
for most of his life before he came to Akira.
He would be best suited to someone who has
experience of larger dogs and also to a home with
older children, due to his playful nature which
can mean on occasion he forgets his own size
and strength! That being said he adores human
contact and loves cuddles. A real softie. Rocco has
been castrated, vaccinated and chipped. He is able
to travel within or outside of Spain. If you would
like more information please contact Akira on 657
689 567 or email akirashelter@aol.com. Rocco can
also be fostered and Akira pays all expenses for
their foster dogs.
Nelo
Nelo is a lovely boy who is good with other
dogs and with people. He is mixed breed,
medium size, nearly two years old, castrated,
vaccinated and has a passport so can travel.
Please consider giving this lovely friendly chap
a home. As you can see he is black and black
dogs are often ‘invisible’ in shelters which is
such a shame. Please contact Akira on 657 687
DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER
WHAT IS MACULAR
DEGENERATION?
Macular degeneration — also called
age-related macular degeneration
(AMD or ARMD) — is a vision change
that can gradually create blurry vision
over time.
AMD affects the macula, the small
central area of the retina that maintains
our sharpest vision. The health of the
macula determines our ability to read,
recognize faces, drive, watch
television, use a digital
device, and perform any
other detailed visual
task.
A patient with
AMD gradually
loses central vision
but maintains
peripheral or side
vision. According to
statistics, one-third of
males and one-quarter
of females over 75 have
some form of AMD.
The prevalence of AMD
and the severity of vision loss
increases with age. AMD may occur in
one or both eyes and may affect each
eye differently.
Symptoms of macular degeneration
Early signs of vision loss from AMD
include shadowy areas in your central
vision or unusually fuzzy or distorted
vision. Some patients may notice wavy
or distorted words when reading.
Additional symptoms include
difficulty seeing details in poor lighting
conditions and glare sensitivity.
Many patients do not notice the
symptoms of AMD if they are present
in only one eye or more pronounced in
one eye than the other. When viewing
with both eyes simultaneously the
symptoms of blur and distortion may
not be noticed.
Causes of macular degeneration
Though macular degeneration
is associated with aging,
research suggests
there also may be a
genetic component
to the disease. Some
researchers believe
that over-exposure to
sunlight also may be
a contributing factor
in development of
macular degeneration,
but this theory has
not been proven
conclusively. The only
risk factors consistently
found in studies to be associated
with AMD are aging and smoking.
Treatments for macular degeneration
There is no cure for macular
degeneration, but some treatments
may delay its progression or even
improve vision.
Treatments for macular degeneration
depend on whether the disease is in
its early-stage dry form or in the more
advanced wet form.
For dry AMD, there are no FDAapproved
treatments, but nutritional

DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER JANUARY 2021 | 15
supplements containing vitamins
can reduce the risk of dry AMD
progressing to sight-threatening wet
AMD.
For wet AMD, the goal of most
treatments is to stop abnormal blood
vessel growth and prevent the leakage
of fluid into the retina. The first line
of treatment is the injection of a
medication directly into the affected
eye. Additional medical and laser
procedures are also available to treat
wet AMD.
For AMD patients who have suffered
any degree of vision loss, low vision
devices such as magnifiers, telescopes
and apps on digital devices can help
to maximize vision potential. Ask your
optometrist about low vision help.
If you notice sudden or gradual
changes in your central vision, see
your eye doctor to rule out macular
degeneration as the cause. Yearly,
This month
discounts on
frames and
sunglasses
up to
70%
comprehensive eye examinations are
recommended as preventative care,
especially for those 65 and older.
If you are an AMD patient who
has suffered vision loss, schedule
an examination with an eye care
practitioner specializing in low vision
rehabilitation These vision care
specialists will evaluate your vision
and your daily needs to maximize
function.
Currently, the best ways to protect
your eyes from developing macular
degeneration are to eat a healthy diet,
exercise and that protect your eyes
from the sun’s.
As you grow older, see an eye doctor
regularly as comprehensive eye
exams play an important role in AMD
prevention
JOHN CURTIS
Hello again , Happy New Year and
a warm welcome to the first of this
year´s All Time Greats. I thought I
would say a little today about the
Anglo American singer / song writer
Rupert Holmes whose main claim
to fame and greatness come from
two songs he wrote and recorded in
1979 & which charted in the UK in
the following year.
Born in England in February
1947, with an English mother
and an American father, David
Goldstein (Rupert´s real name)
inherited musical talent from his
father who was a Warrant Officer
and bandleader in the US Army.
Moving to New York when he
was just six the youngster began
displaying his prodigious talent at
the Manhattan School of Music at
which he gained a Major in playing
RUPERT HOLMES
the clarinet. Rupert also learned to
play a number of other instruments
which helped him hone his talents
in writing his trademark story
telling and often playful songs and
discovered that his singing voice
too would enable him to perform
them himself. Early involvement
with the 70s band The Cuff Links
led to a number of recording artists
clamouring to sing his songs which
in turn led to Rupert working for
none other than Barbra Streisand
and providing music for her film A
Star Is Born in 1975. Along the way
today´s hero took on the persona
of Rupert Holmes which legend
suggests came from a childhood
liking for Rupert The Bear and an
adult appreciation for the Sherlock
Holmes stories.
Rupert´s finest hour came in
1979 with his own fifth album, a
collection of typically varied and
witty songs called “Partners In
Crime.” It is on this album (which I
bought in Vinyl form in 1980 and
STILL possess) that the two songs I
referred to earlier are to be found.
First The “Pinacolada Song” (a/k/a
“Escape”) tells the story of a couple

JOHN CURTIS
JANUARY 2021 | 17
whose relationship has gone stale
and who separately seek playful
distractions elsewhere only to find
that their efforts lead them back
to each other. The second is the
more serious “Him” in which the
protagonist is trying to come to
terms with the discovery that his
partner is having an affair. These
two songs received copious
play on the radio in the
UK, they still do!. and
earned Rupert his
two hits there in
1980. Another gem
on this album
is “Answering
Machine , yes it´s
a story involving a
phone answering
machine, but sadly
it did not connect in
the UK. There were
many more works from
this hugely gifted musician
but Partners In Crime remains
his seminal work as a song writer
and performer.
I am pleased to report that, with no
one more surprised than me, my
radio show on Bay Radio , Ready
Steady Sunday, carries on into 2021
in fact hoping to turn 13 years old in
May. A feature on Rupert Holmes
and his Partners In Crime album
in particular is long overdue and
will in fact come on the edition
which airs on Sunday 17th January.
I hope you can join me for this and
indeed every edition of a show
than unashamedly wallows
in nostalgia and the
music of the Sixties and
Seventies. Feel free
to contact me with
ideas, requests and
certainly criticism
via “jc@bayradio.
fm.”
Before closing I
wish all my listeners
and readers a very
happy new year as
we continue with
our battles against a
number of foes. I hold firm
to my belief that music is the
panacea to many of our troubles
and my mantra remains the same,
year in year out, that we must KEEP
ROCKING!!!
DAVID MOORHOUSE.
Our Dear All,
written Wednesday, 23rd.
December, 2020.
by John David Moorhouse.
As you/we (wherever) get down
seriously to decorating our Christmas
cakes (Mother and I by the “link” of
lively imaginations) here is a short
story about one of the places in northwestern
France that has fascinated
me/us for more than 70 years
A Story by John David Moorhouse
- “Le Catedral Engloutique” - “The
Sunken Cathedral”
What an unique setting for such a
perfect tragedy.... it stood on the
storm-swept cliffs of coastal
Normandy....waiting
for the inevitability of
centuries!!!!
My family were
true Normans with
connections going
back to the Norse
Invasion.... we were
proud of our long and
important history.
From when I was a young
boy, I was locked into this
unbreakable society through
my family and through Holy
Mother Church, not because I had
to but because I wanted to be part of
it forever.... in those days ‘forever’
carried a special kind of meaning!
As I grew up straight and true, all
seemed well and strong, not clouded
by doubts about the future.
I finished schooling in Rouen (where
stands the Mighty Cathedral to this
day) and launched into a broader,
cosmopolitan world.
But, the ‘pull’ of those years on the
wild, coastal panorama of Normandy
never left me....
Going back some years later I was
dismayed to find that many, old family
homes had fallen into disrepair, the
long-rooted families having deserted
the panoramic cliff-sides that made
our community so unique.... although
the (reduced) core of the community
still lived there, centered on the Parish
Church, now dangerously
close to the ever-crumbling
cliffside and the everencroaching,
wild North
Sea.
Still in regular weekly
use the ‘Cathedral’ (as
we called it) continued
to stand firm and
defiant, a Beacon of
God’s Light upon
Earth.
Walking round the
building, inside and
outside, I could see no signs
of fabric-erosion or foundational
unsettlement.... the whole edifice
seemed as secure as ever!
Little did I know what lay just months
ahead.... one terrible, tempest-filled,
winter night, the Sea finally struck
a mortal blow, hitting directly the
promontory upon which stood the
‘Cathedral’ itself; so forcefully, so
devastatingly, that the ground beneath
the “Cathedral” was totally fractured
and, almost unthinkably, the whole

DAVID MOORHOUSE. JANUARY 2021 | 21
“Cathedral” slid down the steep slope
as a landslide took it, somehow still
standing upright, into the churning
waters below.
Miraculously, the Campanile
stayed intact, the Belfry
unbroken, the Bell
continuing to hang on its
saddle....
I stood atop the
cliff, feeling deeply
the loss to my
community of this
terrible catastrophe,
desperately seeking
some kind of comfort
that my past was
not lost forever.... the
answer came to me in a
few seconds.... the muted
sound of the swinging Bell
beneath the waves far below
“On That Rainy Day”
by John David Moorhouse.
me....
clear, rhythmic tones seemed to
promise that my roots, my community
had not died but would go on living
forever, long after I was gone.... !!!!
P.S. Claude Debussy
composed a wonderful
prelude for piano,
entitled “Le Catedral
Engloutique”, a
timeless, expression of
“forever”.... I strongly
recommend that you
go back and listen to
this music as often as
Foreman. In the early
1980s, after retiring from
28 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA DEE’S TRAVELS
DEE’S TRAVELS
TO VAC OR NOT TO VAC
‘Travel Broadens the mind’ is attributed
to Aldous Huxley, but I’m not sure
if he added ‘at the start of every
year, the big dream for most
people is to go travelling, to
experience the true source
of knowledge in the
world that surrounds
us.’
Personally, I think most
people go travelling
to fry themselves to a
crisp under a boiling
hot sun to prove they
have left British shores
and escaped the pouring
rain and grey skies if only
for a couple of weeks.
Until the latest pandemic hit,
travel has never been so easy or so
affordable. In fact, the most difficult
part is negotiating your way through
the hidden extras on the low-cost
airline sites to avoid paying for multiple
suitcases, boarding a few milliseconds
before other passengers and
measuring your cabin bag
multiple times to make sure
it will fit in the constantlyshrinking
wire cages they
display at the boarding
gate.
Being part of the EU has
made crossing borders
even simpler but it has
not always been like
that. For our first foray to
Africa, we were subjected to
a barrage of needles without
which we were told we would
not be permitted past the customs
shed at our destination.
First, there was the Yellow Fever
jab. We presented ourselves at a
dilapidated building close to the
Seaman’s Mission in Aberdeen, I guess
for the convenience of the sailors. I’ll
swear my pretty doctor was a potential
for the javelin event in the next
Olympics as she aimed for my
unprotected and shaking
arm, took fierce aim and
flung the syringe in my
direction. To be fair, she
did ask me first if I was
allergic to eggs, but
before I could reply
the needle was already
invading my delicate
flesh.
No sooner had the
swelling gone down
and the aching ceased,
we were then pumped with
a bit of anti-typhoid in some
form or another, along with a hopeful
protection to save us from suffering
typhus.
At the time, I had no idea what these
diseases were, what caused them
or their symptoms and how I could
possibly catch them. How would
I ever know if I had any of
them?
I was assured that the baby
I was still breastfeeding
would get all the
protection she needed
from my free food source
and be fine. (She wasn’t,
and I wasn’t, but that is a
story for another day).
But we were not finished
yet. While resembling a pin
cushion, we were subjected
to an anti-cholera jab. I later
discovered this covered you up to 60%
for a mere 6 months and if you drank
only potable water, refused ice cubes in
your drinks, and desisted from buying
food from roadside sellers you were
most unlikely to catch this disease.

DEE’S TRAVELS
JANUARY 2021 | 29
Armed with a small telephone
directory of vaccination papers, we
were then ordered to stuff ourselves
full of anti-malarial tablets, one kind
on Sundays and the other brand daily.
We bought boxes and boxes of them.
I swear I rattled as I boarded that
first plane.
Many people in Africa no
longer take anti-malarial
prophylactics since current
thinking is that they mask
the symptoms making
the disease harder to
diagnose.
I was even doubtful that
anyone would even check
the paperwork on our
arrival at the airport, but I was
wrong. They examined each and
every single vaccination certificate in
meticulous detail, slowly, very slowly
until I was convinced we’d die of heat
https://lucindaeclarkeauthor.com
stroke before we even stepped outside
the terminal.
Which brings me to the current fuss
about the present Covid vaccinations.
While this is touted as the New Age of
Enlightenment, when everything and
everyone should be equal and
no one should be offended or
missed out, try explaining
your reasons for not having
a Covid 19 vaccination
certificate at some farflung
border post in the
middle of nowhere and
see where that gets you.
Travel may broaden the
mind but there are rules to
follow and it makes sense to
protect yourself, your friends
and family and all other humans
on our planet. Stay safe and take care.
30 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA SIMON RATCLIFFE
I am going to write this article based
on my personal and professional
experience regarding the effects
of wearing a protective face mask
during these difficult times. I wear
a protective mask for about 8-10
hours a day during my professional
activity and first thing I must
mention is that it is 100% necessary
to wear it if we want to control the
spread of covid-19. A lot of people
are skeptical regarding the need
to wear a mask or not, I personally
believe that in enclosed spaces it is
of upmost importance to be wearing
one, especially when being treated
during physiotherapy/osteopathy
sessions. So clarifying that I am in
favor of mask-wearing, let’s continue
with this article:
As I mentioned earlier, I am writing
this on personal and professional
experience and haven’t looked in to
other possible articles or scientific
studies regarding this issue,
although it’s probably too soon to
have come up with studies to test
this out anyway.
What I mechanically experience with
a mask on is jaw mobility restriction,
this means that because we are
unable to fully open our mouths
when wearing a mask, it’s possible
that we are altering are normal jaw
mobility when talking and breathing
UNMASKING NECK PAIN
AND HEADACHES
for example. This shouldn’t be a
problem if you are only wearing the
mask for brief periods of the day
like for taking your kids to school
or going shopping, but can be an
issue if you have to wear your mask
for many hours a day, for example
at work. So because the mechanics
of the jaw are impeded that affects
the joint and also muscles and its
connections. The muscles in this
area are physically connected to the
neck and skull and are controlled
by nerves that also come from these
areas. Because of this the jaw can
cause neck pain and headaches,
this isn’t anything new and you can
find many scientific studies on this
matter.
Another issue is the tension caused
by the loops around the ears; this
can irritate the temporal muscles
that also connect to the jaw and skull
therefore increasing the problems at
this area.
The last thing I believe may be a
factor is the steaming up of our
glasses while wearing a mask. The
reason I mention this is purely
because it’s very easy for us to just
take our glasses off to avoid this
from happening, in many cases this
isn’t a problem because our glasses
may not be the cause of our neck
pain. But in other cases not wearing
SIMON RATCLIFFE
our glasses can cause us to change
the positioning of our cervical spine
to help adjust our eye sight and
therefore causing a biomechanical
issue. Also forcing our eyes to try to
adjust without our glasses can lead
to headaches in its self.
So now that I have mentioned the
main reasons I think the face mask
can cause these problems, what is
the solution?
Well the best thing is to make
adjustments to our daily mask
wearing routine if possible. We can
do this by altering the straps that
our masks use; there are alternative
straps that go around the back of our
heads therefore reducing tension on
the ears.
Another option is to take regulated
breaks and take our masks off safely
MR YEN BAR/ RESTAURANT IS THE PERFECT PLACE
JANUARY 2021 | 31
A warm welcome awaits you from the owner “Yen” at the recently opened MR YEN Asian Bar/Restaurant in Moraira.
The owner is well known, from his previous, well established restaurants, ASIA Ye and Qing Qing, Tabaira, and
Ichiban in Moraira as serving excellent food and of course this continues in his new restaurant.
You will immediately notice the pleasing atmosphere and the different areas
where you can dine. From a front terrace to a well presented dining area inside,
to a large covered back terrace. Thus plenty of space to choose where to dine,
with comfortable seating. Everything is perfect.
There is a variety of menus and diverse dishes of Asian specialty cuisine, with
delicious tasty food, all at excellent prices. There are set menus and a variety
of meat dishes from Pork, Duck, Chicken, Beef and seafood with vegetables,
rice or noodles. Kids menus available.
The wine list is good and reasonably priced. There is also a “Take Away Service”.
Very attentive friendly family service.
Perhaps you would like to relax just with a drink on the terrace. No problem.
Parking available at the front of the restaurant.
in areas where this is possible, when
doing this some jaw exercises may
be useful to help liberate any tension
in this area.
Always wear our glasses and
adjust the mask properly to avoid
steaming, maybe try different masks
that adjust better on the bridge of
our nose.
There are probably other
preventative things we can do to
improve the issues I mentioned at
the beginning of the article, but can’t
think of many more at the moment.
And last but not least, it’s possible
you may need treatment for these
mechanical issues, especially if you
are unable to take the mask off at all
at work, or have a preexisting neck
or jaw issue that is worsened by
wearing the mask.

It was Oscar Wilde who said that anyone who doesn’t judge
fellow Irishman but the latter comment doesn’t necessarily hold
water. We do judge on appearance, which is not to our credit.
Furthermore, such an attitude doesn’t add credit to one’s bank
account.
I recall hearing of a shiftless looking character who ambled into
a show house situated on a classy new housing estate. Set in
blue-chip Cheshire the surrounding countryside was broken by
magnificent homes. If you made as much money as a premier
WALSH’S WISDOM
division footballer, politician or banker, they were likely to be your
neighbours.
The show home the stranger wandered into doubled as the sales
office too. In fairness, the stranger calling in did look out of place.
To say he was dressed down would be to flatter him. He appeared
to be a farmhand perhaps down on his luck. His distressed
corduroys and shabby jacket set him far apart from the usual welldressed
house buyers.
As the man entered the company’s sales office two fashionably
dressed sales clerks scornfully peered at the unwanted intruder.
When he politely enquired as to the purchasing price and buying
process of two homes he had admired, the two sales ladies looked
at each other in puzzled contempt.
As you might expect, the smartly dressed reps gave the enquirer
the brush off and considered him fortunate that they had not given
him a good dressing down as a bonus.
You know what is coming, don’t you? It turned out that the
caller was the owner of the land and the house builder’s sales
representatives now polish their fingernails elsewhere.
The lesson learned, don’t judge on appearance. I know several
millionaires as I am sure you do. Not one of them could be picked
out in a crowd as being wealthier than the rest of us. In fact, two of
my friends actually look down at heel.
As my wife and I accompanied our wealthy friend along the
promenade at super-posh Puerto Banus on the Costa del Sol, there
were a few despairing glances sent in our friend’s direction. What
they didn’t know was that our companion was wealthy enough to
own one of the yachts in the harbour. Furthermore, he had just sold
his casino for €7 million.
In my long experience, those who flaunt their wealth have very
little of it; those who do don’t advertise it.
If you lose a customer by forgetting he is king then your business
takes a double hit. You lose his custom and your trade rival
pockets your profits. If you think the poor man’s shilling is
worth less than the rich man’s shilling you shouldn’t be running
a business. Treat all customers with deference and respect. It’s
called business.
THE EXILED DUKE WHO
TURNED DESERT TO PARADISE
WALSH’S WISDOM
CITY VICTIM OF UNFAIR SLURS
If in the 1960s Liverpool was your
hometown you bathed in celebrity
status wherever in the world you found
yourself. This was largely due to
Liverpool FC’s collection of silverware
that lesser clubs could only drool over.
Then there were the Beatles, the
Mersey Sound, the city’s playwrights
like Willy Russell who penned
Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, and
Blood Brothers. Prime Minister Harold
Wilson was educated on Merseyside.
Liverpool was said to be the Second
City of the British Empire.
The city’s Irish links are well known.
Britain’s much-loved comedian Ken
Dodd (RIP) described Liverpool as
Murphyside; or described the city as
Dublin’s East End. Ireland’s capital is
in fact nearer to Liverpool than it is to
London.
One can only pity the wasp-tongued
uncharitable minority and their
spiteful put-downs. Whenever
Liverpool’s name is mentioned, we
hear hackneyed humour that is long
past its sell-by date. But, as the saying
goes, ‘Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity
pays to genius.’
What I fail to understand is why some
Scousers are themselves responsible
for the city’s negative image. However,
wherever I travelled throughout
the UK most people, by far, were
WALSH’S WISDOM
JANUARY 2021 | 35
complimentary.
An interesting observation was that
whenever someone was acid-tongued
about one of my favourite cities I
would ask. ‘Have you ever been to
Liverpool?’ No, they had never been
to the city but felt expert enough to
pronounce on it.
The myths include the Liverpool
citizen’s inclination to steal, cheat the
system, and their poor dress sense.
Being of the older generation I recall
the same ‘jokes’ being ascribed to West
Indians, Africans and Asians. The law
was changed so the insulting remarks
suffered by these cultures were instead
re-directed at Liverpool or Irish people
who are not a protected species.
When I last checked, of the five
metropolitan police regions,
Merseyside’s crime rate was the lowest.
London is by far the highest and
Tameside (Manchester) suffers double
Merseyside’s crime rates. Sixteen UK
cities promise a crime rate higher than
Liverpool’s. Sadly, some will never
allow facts to get in the way of myths.
Of the city’s many quirks, the wit
of Liverpool people is legendary.
Above all else, they love poking fun
at themselves. Nevertheless, when
they do so it is said with humour; you
laugh with them, not at them. They do
not take themselves or their funniness
seriously.
Some outsiders fail to understand this.
When a Liverpool comedian teases and
pulls his fellow citizens’ legs about
their crime rate, poor dress sense or
laziness, we know it is not true.
Perhaps the problem is that there
are some who fail to understand this
subtlety. That is a shame, as there
cannot be a single Briton who would
be anything but the poorer if Liverpool
and its people did not exist.

ANNE RODGER
SIXTH FORM
BY
ANNE RODGER
My first day in the Sixth
Form with such euphoria. I
had evaded my mum and there
I was being congratulated
by our Form Mistress, Miss
Whitehouse on having
achieved the best O’ Level
results of our year. I was at the
top of my game - could take
any course I wanted. There
was only one for me – Modern
Languages. I had loved English
and French and was looking
forward to learning Spanish. To
my dismay, Miss Whitehouse
said that the Spanish teacher
unexpectedly left and had not
been replaced.
“You will have to do either
History or Latin as your third
subject”, she said. I didn’t want
to do either. As there seemed
to be no other alternative. I was
sent to the Headmistress. She
was intransigent, agreeing with
Miss Whitehouse. There was
no stalemate. A long silence,
during which I glared at Miss
Carter.
Eventually I said “Alright, I’ll
do Science”. What a mistake
but one that determined the
course my life would take.
It was not pointed out that
I would be stuck with my
Sixth Form subjects forever.
I didn’t want to teach young
children, so as a Secondary
School teacher, I would teach
a specialist subject. That of
course, would be the subject
I had studied as a student –
which would be determined by
what I had done in the Sixth
Form. With hindsight, what is
obvious, but at 16, on my first
rebellious Sixth form day, it
never entered my mind.
So I embarked on 2 years of
misery. Completely out of my
depth with an impossible work
load. We were given a choice
in Biology of either doing it
as one subject (11 periods a
week) or Botany and Zoology
separately (14 periods a week).
The three of us who had opted
to do Biology, had to agree. For
the sake of an extra 3 periods a
week we would get 2 A’ Levels,
not one so we voted to do the
separate subjects.
This was okay for Mary and
Chris as they would be doing
General Studies as their third
subject, so would have plenty

ANNE RODGER JANUARY 2021 | 37
of free periods, whereas I also
had Physics and Chemistry
to fit in. My work load was
impossible and to fit in the 4
periods, we had to stay till 5.00
pm on 2 nights a week. On 2
nights I had tennis practice,
and on the fifth night – Choir
Practice. I was never home
before 7.00 pm. – tired out and
“stressed” (not a word that
existed in those days). Not in
any state to do homework after
tea.
I would not admit defeat,
though it was obvious
to everyone that I was
struggling. There
were no Physicists,
the other 9 also
doing Maths, so the
“Mechanics” part of
the Physics subjects
covered in Maths
lessons, which I
could not attend as
they clashed with
Zoology. Inevitably, I
failed the Physics Mock
Exam so was not allowed to
take it at A’ level.
There was a small glint of
light to brighten the misery
of my Sixth Form years. I had
a boyfriend. His name was
Tom. He was Chairman of
the Debating Society of the
Boys Grammar school next
door. I was Chairman of ours.
I remember very enjoyable
debates, with a lot of shouting
and motions like “A Woman’s
Place is in the House”.
He swung incense at his
“High School”. This man was
an Alderman. His dad was
area controller of Walls (Ice
cream and Sausages). He was
“acceptable”. On Saturdays he
borrowed his mum’s CAR to
take me to “The Pictures”. No
one in our area had a car, so I
knew that I was the subject of
comment from the neighbours.
By my 18th Birthday, Mum was
hearing Wedding Bells.
As she let us in the front door
after 11.00 pm one Saturday
evening, mum didn’t ask about
the film as she normally did but
said “You’re very late”. To
my everlasting shame,
Tom replied, “Well we
had to stop for a quick
snog”. Mum didn’t
look at me for at least
a week.
Our final assembly
at school was
bittersweet. We
were presented with
our badges. Both my
best friend Mary and
I got our “First Tennis
Team” and “Senior Prefect”
badges and Mary had been
Games Captain. She had been
a wonderful friend to me –
letting me copy her homework
when I hadn’t done mine, and
even lesson notes when I had
been asleep. (That’s another
story).
She wanted to be a nurse, and
I was going to be a teacher. So
we went our separate ways.
But before that, we had a
memorable week’s holiday at
Butlin’s Holiday Camp. Then I
became a Student.

40 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA A MEDIUM RARE
Just like writing the very first
entries into your new 2021 diary,
here comes another year and a long
month of January looms ahead. I
may be clairvoyant, but nobody
could really knew this time last
year, what would happen during a
year that brought us all lockdowns,
curfews and obligatory mask
wearing into existence; testing us
to a level previously unthinkable.
Having said this, the year just
seemed to fly by, whatever our
experiences of the ups and downs,
and under all circumstances into
the bargain.
Spiritually, many people began
to look for solutions, but actually
they never got explanations, and
hopefully kept hold of their faith
which allowed them to serve and
protect their communities and
families as best that they could
under the circumstances. We
knuckled down, but we could not
fight an unseen enemy, and we
rock and rolled each our way as the
jukebox of the Pandemic played
tune after tune on the turntable of
life.
After a year of fear and despair,
Spirit brought in loving care and
survival and resolution. We are
getting hope now in a World
that has managed to allow us to
readjust as we reinvent ourselves.
We can make a suitable place
within ourselves to assist the
needy and focus on the needs
of others, and that is as a direct
FIRST FOOTING
result of a crisis. So, too have we
learned much about ourselves
in the process, each relaxation
of severities imposed bringing
relief in their cancellation, and
each helping to make a genuine
difference in the way that we live
our lives.
When people say that things will
never ever be the same again, then
maybe, just maybe, they could be
better. After all, it is very true that
you appreciate things more when
you do not have them, and in
general we take things for granted
when we do have them. Being
grateful for what we do have, and
making others happy, because we
can, are two great joys in life.
Whatever is out there for us now
is something that we still have to
face. The power that is the Universe
of life brings antidoteal rescue to
our aid even on the darkest nights
of the soul. When the wind blows
or the bee stings, or we are feeling
sad, then somebody is at least out
there for us, watching our backs
and bringing solutions that cover
all that hurts or threatens us, in
any way. Spiritual people all over
the World are gearing up for an
Ascension and are in process of
clearing themselves to enable the
taking on of roles we know we
are prepared to take to help heal
a damaged Planet. We are taking
such strides to ensure that what
comes next is a need to share and
care in a way that we have never

A MEDIUM RARE
ever done before. Are we afraid?
Well, fear never helped anyone,
so whatever comes along in the
forthcoming year, we are onto it,
and come what may we will never
be alone in the caring and sharing
process that unites the Globe and
strikes a blow for the freedom of
the soul; as an expression of the
loving care that we hold inside.
It may be hard to plan a way
through this year, and it hopefully
will get better with time. Whether
you decide to take up the
opportunity of a shot of anti-Covid
vaccine when and if it should
be offered, or you are happier
working together with your natural
immunity and reject vaccination;
may you stay safe and well and
protected. Let’s make this a year
JANUARY 2021 | 41
where the littlest things matter
most, and friends, neighbours
and family can be a focus of our
attention, hopefully in a post Virus
situation. I would ask that all the
dedicated health care practitioners
are rewarded for doing such a job,
and that business are compensated
so that we can get back to even
basics once more, Currently knock
on effects are biting hard into a
burgeoning negativity, and things
have to change to bring security
and happiness back into our
doubting lives.
Make this year matter, and amidst
changes and difficulties I hope
Spirit brings you safely through the
months ahead, come what may and
day by day.
42 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA WALSH WISDOM
Walsh’s Wisdom
SAILOR CADET WHO NEARLY
SANK A US DESTROYER
At 4,000 miles it
is quite a distance
between Los Angeles
and the entrance of
the Panama Canal.
The tranquillity of
the tropical western
seaboard of the United
States was likely the
last place on earth where one might
expect high drama but on the high
or restful seas always prepare for the
unexpected.
As a Junior Ordinary Seaman (JOS) I took
my trick on the ship’s wheel situated on
the monkey island, a small platform deck
atop a ship’s wheelhouse which means
the helmsman’s virtual isolation.
The officer of the watch was in the chart
room and the ship’s deck crew were
nowhere to be seen as I held the ship’s
course. I had the vastness of the Pacific
Ocean all to myself, or so I thought.
This was not quite true for on the horizon
I spotted another vessel but there was
nothing unusual in that. But, there was
something unusual about to happen as
it became apparent that the approaching
vessel was on course to cross our path.
This is not good at the best of times but it
is disastrous when the other vessel is an
American warship.
As a 16-year old, I had little idea what
action to take to avoid what looked like
an impending collision? With an oath
coarse enough to curl a fair maid’s hair I
called down the voice pipe for the ship’s
Second Officer. My cries went unheeded;
I presumed the officer to be fast asleep.
By this time, our vessel was closer to the
warship whose course was now a clear
invitation to our ship to take evasive
action or to hew it in two. In the case of
the latter, Whitehall’s War Office would
have some explaining to do to avoid allout
war with the United States.
Wet behind the ears I lacked the
experience (and brains) to alter course
that would take the MV Columbia Star
around the stern of the warship. We
were taught that when an officer gives a
helmsman a course to steer he steers it no
ifs or buts about it.
Holding my ship’s course I put the onus
on the American Navy to take evasive
action. Anyway, by now I had left it too
late to alter course. A ship will travel a
mile or so before it responds to a turn
of the wheel. The distance between our
approaching vessels had narrowed to
a point where I could see her sailors
scurrying about on the American
destroyer’s decks.
Steeling myself for the inevitable
collision I watched my life pass before
my eyes. Then, unexpectedly, the
warship’s stern plunged deeper. The
boost from its powerful engines turned
the warship’s wake into a maelstrom,
the bows reared and the destroyer
moved quickly aside to allow the British
merchantman to cleave the warship’s
wake instead of its topsides.
Although merely a cadet I did know that
the protocol of the sea is that merchant
ships give way to warships. Furthermore,
the practice is for the merchant ship to
first dip its jack in salute to the warship.
The latter does likewise and again raises
their ensign at which point the merchant
ship raises its ensign.
As the crew of the Columbia Star
were ‘otherwise engaged’ and quite
unknowing of the drama one assumes
that the bare flag pole of the passing
merchantman was seen as a one-fingered
salute.

46 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA CHANGE YOUR LIFE
ARE YOU A LOVE ADDICT?
Apparently so many of us are!
This can cause many problems
socially, emotionally, and
even end up as physical
illness, but if you recognise
it and deal with it, all can be
well.
We bring an awful lot of
problems on ourselves by the
way we allow ourselves to be
pulled down by dwelling
on masses of stuff
that happened
years ago and we
can do nothing
about!. …..then,
as if that isn’t
bad enough,
we choose to
also worry
about loads
of things that
MIGHT happen
in the future that
haven’t happened yet!
There is nothing wrong with
CARING about things, but
worrying about everything
24/7 is going to wreak
havoc in our lives, destroy
relationships, and make us
miserable and incapable of
enjoying life too. Negative
thinking…..or thinking the
worst about everything is
destructive in every way. It
can alter your personality and
it can make you ill! Positive
thinking on the other hand,
…..or trying to see the best in
everything, uplifts you and
boosts your immune system.
FACT!
People become love addicts
because they have
experienced rejection
in their youth, they
did not feel the
love they needed
back then, so
they become
addicted to
wanting that
feeling in their
lives as adults.
They are the
ones who settle
for much less
than they deserve
when it comes to
relationships….they continue
to put up with abuse if every
kind, emotional and physical,
they don’t want to let go of
relationships because they
don’t want to be on their
own and feel unloved and
unwanted. Reason? No love of
self.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Sadly, to add to the situation
the partners they often
choose are often Romance
Addicts! Romance Addicts
are people who are addicted
to multiple partners. They
are not afraid of bonding,
romance addicts bond with
each of their partners—to
one degree or another—even
if the romantic liaisons are
short-lived or happening
simultaneously. By “romance”
I mean passion and artificial
emotional intimacy. Please
note that while romance
addicts bond with each of
their partners to a degree, their
goal (besides getting high off
the romance and drama) is to
JANUARY 2021 | 47
avoid commitment or bonding
on a deeper level with any
one partner, so they collect
partners and move around!
Imagine what this does for the
love addict trying to hang on
in there, refusing to make the
break for their own salvation.
I asked at the beginning if
any of you thought you were
Love Addicts,? Well the reason
behind that is that I have met
quite a lot recently, and yet by
learning how to take control of
their own lives, all this can be
overcome, and life can become
sweet again.
Till the next time! Take care!
Violet King
Have we all been born for a reason?
If that sounds a strange question to ask, let
me explain. The vast majority of people are
not interested in anything but getting through
the day. They aren’t interested in what makes
things tick, they wouldn’t grab an opportunity
if it got up and bit them, they don’t care about
what is going on except what is on T.V. or what
they had for dinner last night, and the daily
routine of life.
I have personally witnessed glazed expressions
go across people’s eyes if the conversation
changes to anything with more depth than
that. No problem! I am not being critical here,
or saying that it is wrong to be like that. I am
just stating a fact.
Some people would not get involved in any
discussion that would reveal what they feel
about things, or what they believe in. They just
listen, then if it is a controversial theme, they
change the subject of the conversation at the
first available opportunity!
People who have impressed me and motivated
me and helped me make changes in my way
of thinking have always endeared me to them
by presenting a different point of view and
one that I could see makes sense. I love that.
There is not one thing that I think now, that I
wouldn’t change if someone could present me
with a better option and different way of seeing
things. Not fickle, just not happy about being
stuck with a rubbish point of view!! I love
change, I love variety, and I love learning different
things about life. We aren’t around long
enough at the moment to risk being bored, and
the world is full of people with different points
of view, different experiences, and I love to
hear about it all!
Success in life has nothing to do with what you
gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s how
you handle things, and what you want to get
out of life. It also has to do with how you see
life and how you see yourself. If you want to,
you can make changes, and maybe that way we
can find out what our own life is all about No
one else is in control of how we handle things,
but us.
Till the next time, take care!
Violet King.

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions is
to start to exercise more then read on...
Ranking in one of the top 3
New Year’s resolutions is to
start to exercise regularly.
Maybe you have even been
given a membership to a gym
for a Christmas gift? Whilst
in the medical profession
we actively encourage
regular exercise, for those
who have not exercised for
any significant time it may
be wise to have a simple
medical check up prior to
starting.
If you feel you are generally
fit and well and have no
chronic (long term) health
issues, a check up may just
be a simple visit with your
G.P. who will give you the
‘once over’.
However, for people with
certain health conditions it
is more important that they
do indeed get the ‘green
light’ before they start
any significant exercise.
Definitely consult your
family doctor if:
• You have been sedentary
for over a year
• You are over 65 and don’t
currently exercise

52 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA PAWS FOR THOUGHT
As with every Christmas we all have a
great time but I tend to overdo the eating
and getting excited about our presents.
Now it is January will need to diet and do
more exercise….I will think about it!!
However, we had a fantastic Christmas.
Such a lot of presents for Bentley. Alfie and
I to open. We have two boxes full of our
toys. I say all the toys, not quite right as
Bentley tends to take the toys to hide them.
He is doing that right now. We are not
bothered, we will find them at some point
but at the moment I prefer the comfort of
the fire.
Helping Santa was so enjoyable and I am
sure he will ask us again next year to assist.
We all enjoyed it.
Alfie gets very excited though. He goes
to the toy box and sorts out the toy he
likes most and then he runs around with
it in his mouth, for people to notice him.
However, when he holds the toy tightly it
squeaks and he starts to sing along with it.
It is funny to see and hear. However, this is
short lived as Bentley usually takes it from
him. They all share very well but if anyone
is going to be grumpy it would be “Bossy
Paws” Bentley. He is the smallest but in
charge.
We were bought some lovely, soft beds.
I sleep enough now and I am very lazy
and snore loudly but I just cannot resist
sleeping that little bit extra on my lovely
big feathered bed. Oh yes I am spoilt but
I am worth it. Everyone hugs me, so I
give them my “Special Look”. Yes they
melt when they see this look. I am told I
am gorgeous, handsome and have a kind
nature and I “lap” it up. My bed is by the
fire in the lounge and I really enjoy the
heat.
I love being fussed. Bentley puts his paw in
the air so he can be tickled on his tummy
and under his leg ha!! He likes to be
independent but Alfie is my shadow. He
cannot even sleep on his own. I suppose
because he is the youngest.
However, Valentines is just around the
corner and I did think of contacting my
lovely long legged, red head. Although she
made my paws curl at one time, I feel now
I am too old to cope with Valentine’s Day. I
can’t be bothered. I enjoy looking forward
to a good meal and stretching out in front
of the fire. Yes maturity has taken over. No
teenage thoughts about my red head long
legged friend any more.
Let me introduce you to my very special
friend Mayra, she is an 8yr old big softie.
She was left in kennels and her owner
never returned, abandoned. Good with
people and other dogs but does not
understand cats - does anybody :) She
is sterilised and passported and would
love to find a family to love her. For more
information about ?? please telephone the
PEPA helpline on 650 304 746 or email
p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com
Until next month. Lots of tail wags, paw,
paws and licks from Bentley, Alfie and of
course yours truly Tyson!!
CELEBRITY PROFILE
BARBARA WINDSOR
In September the Out & About magazine
published a story of Barbara’s life so it
is very sad to say that the actress Dame
Barbara Windsor, died at 8:35 pm on 10
December 2020 at the age of 83.
Barbara Ann Windsor, MBE (born Barbara
Ann Deeks on 6 August 1937) was an
English actress. Her best known roles are
the Carry On films and as Peggy Mitchell
in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.
Her husband Scott Mitchell said
she had died peacefully from
Alzheimer’s at a London care
home on Thursday evening.
He said she would be
remembered for the
“love, fun, friendship and
brightness she brought to
all our lives”.
Barbara created an icon
in Peggy Mitchell, our
formidable Landlady. in
EastEnders, she appeared
in nine films in the Carry On
comedy series, plus Sparrows
Can’t Sing, for which she was
nominated for a Bafta, as well as
parts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and
On the Fiddle with Sir Sean Connery.
Her last appearance in the soap came
in 2016, the same year she was made
a dame for her services to charity and
entertainment.
She also worked in theatre - making
her stage debut at 13 - and appeared
in productions including Oh! What A
Lovely War and Fings Ain’t Wot They
Used To Be.
The character you saw on TV and film
was remarkably close to the person
you would chat to before and after an
interview. She was from a generation of
working-class actors who had got their
breaks in the 60s when theatre directors
like Joan Littlewood were looking for
talent that seemed real and natural on
stage and screen. that’s not to say she
wasn’t also tough and canny enough
to know how to turn on the charm. Her
life was a story filled with gangsters, set
backs and determination to succeed.
She had decided to act when she was a
child and there was behind the laughter
the sort of steel you need to have a
career that lasts nearly 70 years. There
was a definitely something of
her character in the tough
EastEnders landlady, Peggy
Mitchell. But she was always
open about her ups and
downs, she didn’t hide the
flaws and vulnerabilities,
which only made her all
the more likeable.
The star delivered a letter
signed by 100,000 people
pleading for better care for
people affected by dementia
and saying the system was
“completely inadequate,
unfair, unsustainable and in
dire need of more money”.
Mr Mitchell, who campaigned
alongside his wife, said of her death: “It
was not the ending that Barbara or anyone
else living with this very cruel disease
deserve. “I will always be immensely
proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and
generosity dealing with her own illness
and still trying to help others by raising
awareness for as long as she could.”
The couple went public with her diagnosis
in 2018 and Mr Mitchell had said they had
been “really nervous” about revealing she
was affected by the condition.
In his statement he thanked the public,
family and friends for support which he
said “Barbara deeply appreciated”.
He added: “I’ve lost my wife, my best
friend and soul mate and my heart or life

CELEBRITY PROFILE
will never feel the same without her.”
The Alzheimer’s Society said it was
“incredibly grateful” to Dame Barbara
and her husband for their work bringing
awareness to the disease.
In a statement, the charity said: “Dame
Barbara Windsor was an amazingly
true, much-loved national treasure, and
in speaking out about her experiences
shone like a beacon for others affected by
dementia.”
Like her EastEnders character, Dame
Barbara was born in east London. Born in
Shoreditch, London in 1937, the only child
of John Deeks, a costermonger, and his
wife, formerly Rose Ellis, a dressmaker.
She passed her 11-plus exams gaining a
place at Our Lady’s Convent in Stamford
Hill. Her mother paid for her to have
elocution lessons, and she trained at the
Aida Foster School in Golders Green,
making her stage debut at 13 and her
West End debut in 1952 in the chorus of
the musical Love From Judy.
Her first film role was in The Belles of
St Trinian’s in 1954. She joined Joan
Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop at the
Theatre Royal, Stratford East, coming
to prominence in their stage production
Fings Ain’t Wot They Used to Be and
Littlewood’s film Sparrers Can’t Sing in
1963, achieving a BAFTA nomination
for Best British Film Actress. She also
appeared in the 1964 film comedy Crooks
in Cloisters, and in the sitcoms The Rag
Trade and Wild, Wild Women. In 1980,
Windsor appeared as “Saucy Nancy” in
the second series of the ITV children’s
show Worzel Gummidge.
One of her most iconic scenes was in Carry
On Camping in 1969, where her bikini top
flew off during outdoor aerobic exercises.
In classic Carry On style, exposure is
implied but little is in fact seen.
From 1973 to 1975 she appeared with
several of the Carry On team in the West
End revue Carry On London! During this
time she had a well-publicised affair with
her co-star, Sid James.
She also starred on Broadway in the
Theatre Workshop’s Oh, What a Lovely
War! and received a 1965 Tony Award
nomination for Best Featured Actress in a
Musical.
JANUARY 2021 | 55
In 1970 she landed the role of music hall
legend Marie Lloyd in the musical-biopic
Sing A Rude Song and in 1972 appeared
in The Threepenny Opera. In 1975,
she toured the UK, New Zealand and
South Africa in her own show, Carry On
Barbara..
In 1981 she played sex-mad landlady
Kath in Entertaining Mr Sloane, directed
by her friend Kenneth Williams.
In 2009 Windsor announced she was to
quit her role as Peggy Mitchell, saying
she wanted to spend more time with
her husband. On 10 September 2010 her
character left Albert Square after a fire at
the Queen Victoria pub, of which she was
the owner.
2010 Windsor appeared on Piers Morgan’s
Life Stories and revealed she has become
teetotal to help Mitchell with his
“terrible alcohol problem”. Also in 2010
she was honoured for her outstanding
contribution to show business, at the
Variety Club Showbiz Awards.
Windsor has married three times: Ronnie
Knight, Krays associate (married 2 March
1964, divorced January 1985). Stephen
Hollings, actor (married 12 April 1986 in
Jamaica, divorced 1995). Scott Mitchell,
former actor and recruitment consultant
(married 8 April 2000).
During the 1960s, she also had a brief
relationship with footballer George Best.
In her autobiography, All of Me, Windsor
talks about her five abortions, the first
three of which took place before the age
of 21, the last when she was 42. She has
said that she never wanted children as a
result of her father rejecting her.
In August 2010, Windsor was given the
Freedom of the City of London she was
honoured by the City of Westminster at
a tree planting and plaque ceremony.
In 2012 Windsor became a patron of the
Amy Winehouse Foundation
As well as being an actress, Windsor and
her husband run four pubs: The Queen
Victoria after the pub in EastEnders, The
Balmoral, as that was the original name of
the Queen Vic, The Dagmar after a wine
bar in EastEnders and The Plough.
What happens to the children,
Fate put aside for me,
But I was bent on other things,
So they were not to be.
I often think those little souls,
Not born to someone else,
Wonder of the life they missed,
But now they’re little Elves.
They play in lover’s garden,
Mortal they’ll not be,
Were they meant for someone else,
Whilst I was meant for thee?
I pray my unborn children,
Will not feel bad of me;
That he is he and she is she,
But cannot now be we:
Well, yes we are in certain ways,
In image and in essence,
Though somewhere else and out of
Nela was so excited waiting for
this was her first Christmas and
the first time to see a Christmas
She put her Christmas outfit
Santa arrived he was “Over the
Experience the Magic of the Mediterranean Cruising
By Carol Levey
The information on cruising is stating
that cruises through to October 2021 are
backed by new, risk-free cancellation
policies. Book today and cancel later
without penalty. Plus there are some
really good reduced prices available.
It also reads that there are currently
assessing enhanced health and safety
protocols in light of COVID-19 and how
they may impact future offerings. Their
actual offerings may vary from what is
displayed or described here. So always
best to check.
The Mediterranean has a way of calling
you when you least expect it. There is
no better way to experience the sunny
and gorgeous Mediterranean than on a
cruise and wake up every day in another
part of the Mediterranean. New places.
New spaces. Old World.
Technically, the off-season in the
Mediterranean is November to March,
when most cruise lines move their ships
to the Caribbean, South America, or
Asia to meet demand for sailings in
warm-weather destinations. However,
the temperate Med can be quite inviting
and far less crowded during these
months. However, there are cruise ships
available and there are some short 7 to10
day Mediterranean cruises in the Off-
Season.
Normally, there are more ships in the
Med all year-round than you’d think.
However, there have been restrictions
due to the Covid 19. So why not start
planning your dream cruise holiday?
Plus there are some very good prices
available.
Norwegian Cruise Line has its
2,018-passengers. Norwegian Spirit
cruising from Barcelona to ports
in Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and
the Canary Islands. Ocean calls
it the “quiet season” and has its
930-passenger Viking Star sailing
half-a-dozen itineraries, mostly from
Rome and Barcelona. MSC Cruises
has two ships in the Med this season
the 4,488 passenger Meraviglia and
the 2,550-passenger Orchestra—while
the 3,724-passenger Costa Diadema
is hosting seven-night itineraries in
the region from Barcelona, Marseilles,
Savona, and Civitavecchia (Rome).
Normally by mid to late March, there
will be 16-plus ships from six cruise
lines sailing in the Mediterranean.
However it may change so it is always
best to keep checking.
Normally there are some very good
short cruises on offer like a 10-night
round-trip cruise on the Norwegian
Spirit from Barcelona to the Canary
Islands and Morocco. Or you could opt
for a seven-night itinerary to ports in
Spain, Italy, and France on the Costa
Cruises and MSC.
There is Often Last-Minute Availability.
You might like to get away for a
romantic Mediterranean cruise this
Valentine’s Day? Or to celebrate a
milestone birthday or anniversary in
March? Off-season cruises often don’t
sell out, so you can be spontaneous and
decide to book with just a few weeks’
notice.
The Weather Is Better for Touring.
Yes, the mercury can dip into the 40s
(January is the coldest month, yet it
rarely gets close to freezing), but more
likely you’ll enjoy daytime averages in
the high 50s, 60s, and even low 70s—
perfect for active days of touring.
Both Barcelona and Rome—two top
cruise ports. You’ll appreciate that
this time of year due to restriction on
travel the tourist hordes are noticeably
thinner, lines are shorter, and you’ll be
able to enjoy the sights in comfort.
Without so many tourists in the mix,
you’ll be able to experience your

JANUARY 2021 | 63
destinations more authentically.
The pace of daily life will be a bit
slower, and the low-key charms of
the Mediterranean from November to
March may just make an off-season
cruiser out of you for good.
The Mediterranean is a fantastic mixing
pot of culture, art, and cuisine. You have
the beauty of living on the Costa with
nearby, Cannes, France, and Italy to visit
with all its charms in Venice, Naples,
Rome, Tuscany, Pompeii, and Florence.
Again on our doorstep discover the
charm of Barcelona and Majorca, as well
as Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, and much
more.
A Mediterranean cruise is a fantastic
way to see several countries, cultures,
and cuisines, on a budget that won’t
flatten your wallet. Twenty two
countries have a coastline on the
Mediterranean Sea, so if you want to
see a lot in a short amount of time, but
only want to unpack once, cruising
is the perfect way to explore the
Mediterranean.
Winter is from late October to mid-
April and it’ll be cold in the Northern
Mediterranean but don’t let that
dissuade you from cruising, as the
weather will still be perfect in Morocco,
Egypt, and the Canary Islands.
The Western Mediterranean borders
France, Spain, and Italy, and most
cruises will embark in Rome or
Barcelona. When cruising the Western
Mediterranean you’ll visit cities like
Rome, Florence, Naples, Barcelona,
Nice, and Lisbon.
The Eastern Mediterranean will be
warmer but the area isn’t quite as
popular as the Western Mediterranean.
You’ll be exploring the black sea, and
can expect to visit Turkey, Greece, Italy,
Croatia and Malta, to name a few.
For those who want to save some
money, Island Cruises are always a great
choice. While the ships will be smaller
this allows them to get into ports that
some of the larger ships can’t access.
Make notes on the type of cruise ship,
ports of call required and price you
roughly have in mind to spend.
Usually ports of call govern the decision
however, some choose certain ships for
the on board entertainment catering for
older people or young families.
1) Every cruise line has a different
style, e.g. Celebrity has a mature and
luxurious feel. Carnival is just that -
great for partiers, Disney is the ultimate
family cruise, and Royal Caribbean
specializes in activities on and offboard.
2) Keep the season in mind. Northerly
cruises are very popular including
Alaska and the Baltic Sea but only
run from late spring to early autumn.
Warmer climates are generally offered
year-round.
3) A general rule - the longer and more
expensive the cruise, the older the
clientele.
4) Most cruises don’t include alcoholic
beverages, tips, off-shore transfers and
off-shore activities. Make sure to factor
those into your budget when planning
your cruise. Opt for an inside cabin for
even more savings.
5) The larger the ship, the less chances
you might be seasick. Try an inside
cabin in the middle of the ship, where
there is less movement to avoid nausea.
6) Choose a cruise that fits your dining
style. They can range from cafeteria
style buffets to elegant sit down dinners.
Food is never lacking on a cruise ship.
7) School holidays and holiday times
mean a ship full of children; off-season
is quieter and you’ll often get a better
deal.
There is also the train to Barcelona
which is a really good bonus to start any
holiday. On arriving in Barcelona either
stay overnight in this fabulous town or
go straight to your chosen ship. Again
check as this year has altered with
regard to travel restrictions.
There are many types of cruises so be
sure to find the cruise that is best suited
for you.
Happy Cruising!!
