28 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA DEE’S TRAVELS DEE’S TRAVELS TO VAC OR NOT TO VAC ‘Travel Broadens the mind’ is attributed to Aldous Huxley, but I’m not sure if he added ‘at the start of every year, the big dream for most people is to go travelling, to experience the true source of knowledge in the world that surrounds us.’ Personally, I think most people go travelling to fry themselves to a crisp under a boiling hot sun to prove they have left British shores and escaped the pouring rain and grey skies if only for a couple of weeks. Until the latest pandemic hit, travel has never been so easy or so affordable. In fact, the most difficult part is negotiating your way through the hidden extras on the low-cost airline sites to avoid paying for multiple suitcases, boarding a few milliseconds before other passengers and measuring your cabin bag multiple times to make sure it will fit in the constantlyshrinking wire cages they display at the boarding gate. Being part of the EU has made crossing borders even simpler but it has not always been like that. For our first foray to Africa, we were subjected to a barrage of needles without which we were told we would not be permitted past the customs shed at our destination. First, there was the Yellow Fever jab. We presented ourselves at a dilapidated building close to the Seaman’s Mission in Aberdeen, I guess for the convenience of the sailors. I’ll swear my pretty doctor was a potential for the javelin event in the next Olympics as she aimed for my unprotected and shaking arm, took fierce aim and flung the syringe in my direction. To be fair, she did ask me first if I was allergic to eggs, but before I could reply the needle was already invading my delicate flesh. No sooner had the swelling gone down and the aching ceased, we were then pumped with a bit of anti-typhoid in some form or another, along with a hopeful protection to save us from suffering typhus. At the time, I had no idea what these diseases were, what caused them or their symptoms and how I could possibly catch them. How would I ever know if I had any of them? I was assured that the baby I was still breastfeeding would get all the protection she needed from my free food source and be fine. (She wasn’t, and I wasn’t, but that is a story for another day). But we were not finished yet. While resembling a pin cushion, we were subjected to an anti-cholera jab. I later discovered this covered you up to 60% for a mere 6 months and if you drank only potable water, refused ice cubes in your drinks, and desisted from buying food from roadside sellers you were most unlikely to catch this disease.
DEE’S TRAVELS JANUARY 2021 | 29 Armed with a small telephone directory of vaccination papers, we were then ordered to stuff ourselves full of anti-malarial tablets, one kind on Sundays and the other brand daily. We bought boxes and boxes of them. I swear I rattled as I boarded that first plane. Many people in Africa no longer take anti-malarial prophylactics since current thinking is that they mask the symptoms making the disease harder to diagnose. I was even doubtful that anyone would even check the paperwork on our arrival at the airport, but I was wrong. Which brings me to the current fuss about the present Covid vaccinations. While this is touted as the New Age of Enlightenment, when everything and everyone should be equal and no one should be offended or missed out, try explaining your reasons for not having a Covid 19 vaccination certificate at some farflung border post in the middle of nowhere and see where that gets you. Travel may broaden the mind but there are rules to follow and it makes sense to protect yourself, your friends and family and all other humans on our planet. Stay safe and take care. The president, Elinor Gonzalez lives in Las Bassetes where she cares for Calpe’s abandoned and sick animals, bringing them back to health and finding new caring owners for them.
