DARWIN DEMOLITION
Eels on track to break Premiership drought
The Parramatta Eels have reached the quarter-way
mark of the NRL season with just one loss as they look
to break a Premiership drought that dates back 35 years.
They returned from TIO Stadium in Darwin with two
more competition points in the bag, thumping
Brisbane 46-6 and sounding a warning siren to
premiership favourites and western Sydney
rivals Penrith.
Only the Panthers stand between the Eels
and the top of the NRL ladder.
Special tributes to the fallen at ANZAC services
COVID-19 restrictions meant numbers were
down on previous years, but hundreds still
attended Dawn Services in Parramatta and
surrounds on Sunday, paying their respects on
ANZAC Day.
Wreaths were laid in commemoration of
those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy
today, while the sounding of ‘The Last Post’ cut
through the chill of the morning air.
Many of those who couldn't attend Dawn
Services took part in simple, solemn driveway
services, or watched live streams of commemorations.
ANZAC Day 2021
LORD
MAYOR’S
MESSAGE
CR BOB
DWYER
On Sunday I attended the ANZAC Day Dawn
Service hosted by the Parramatta RSL sub-
Branch to remember and honour all the
Australian and New Zealand men and women
who served and sacrificed for our nation. It
was a moving ceremony, and it was wonderful
to see our community come together in
commemoration of ANZAC Day once again
after not being able to do so last year.
I would like to recognise and thank the
Parramatta and Epping RSL sub-Branches for
hosting COVID-safe ceremonies and for all of
the support they provide to our local veterans
and community.
You can access Council’s ANZAC Day Online
Experience until 2 May. It includes a range of
historical articles, photos, and stories from
local soldiers, as well as the details of a special
conservation project. The Online Experience
can be accessed at cityofparramatta.co/
EducateAT Parramatta Alliance
Last week we launched a ground-breaking
alliance to help establish Parramatta as the
best city in Australia for students to study and
succeed. The EducateAT Parramatta Alliance
unites top universities that have a presence in
Parramatta to advocate for, and attract talent
to, our City.
A ceremony was held on Wednesday 21 April
at Western Sydney University’s Parramatta
City campus to sign the EducateAT Parramatta
Charter. I signed the charter along with
City of Parramatta CEO Brett Newman and
representatives from Western Sydney University,
University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, University
of New England, Swinburne University of
Technology, and the Western Sydney Local
Health District.
Under this charter, alliance members will
develop a range of projects to position
Parramatta as a destination for educational
excellence; advocate for more affordable
student accommodation and better transport
options; link students with industry; and improve
the City’s liveability and sustainability.
Parramatta is already known for its $1.6 billion
education sector, which includes world-class
universities and the respected Westmead
Health Precinct. I am looking forward to working
with this alliance to achieve our shared vision of
making the centre of global Sydney a thriving
hub of academic excellence and vocational
training.
and introduce them to new and broader
audiences, as well as inspire future generations.
Sydney Writers’ Festival has returned for 2021,
with special events running until 2 May. This
is a great opportunity for us to highlight and
I was pleased to hear that the Parramatta River
Catchment Group (PRCG) has been awarded
the 2021 Stormwater National Awards for
one of the founding members of the PRCG,
City of Parramatta Council is proud to be
a leading player in the development of the
Council believes that cleaning up the
Parramatta River is critical to making our
City a great place to live and work, and I am
looking forward to continuing to build strong
partnerships with our surrounding councils,
State Government agencies, and local
community groups to ensure we achieve our
collective goal of making Parramatta River
Dwyer: Let the
people decide
NICOLA BARTON
The people of Parramatta could be
given the power to elect their own
Lord Mayor, if Councillors choose
to support it.
Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer has put forward
a notice of motion, calling for Council to
hold a constitutional referendum at this
September’s Local Government Election
to canvass voters on introducing a popularly
elected Lord Mayor from September
2024.
Traditionally, City of Parramatta Councillors
have selected their own Lord Mayor,
which has seen a significant number of
differing representatives in the position.
There are only four Lord Mayors in the
State of NSW.
The City of Parramatta is the only of the
four that does not popularly elect its Lord
Mayor.
Cr Dwyer said it’s time for the residents
of Parramatta to have their say about who
they would like to support for the position.
“On the basis that in more recent times,
we have been favourably compared with
the City of Sydney Council, then I have
a passionate view that it is time City of
Parramatta also have a popularly elected
Lord Mayor for a four year period,” he said
“I believe a popularly elected Lord Mayor
in the City of Parramatta is required by
September 2024 due to the ongoing growth
of our city into a true major commercial
city.
“We are already the Central River City, as
designed by the State Government, to be
Sydney’s second Central Business District.
“By September 2024 I will certainly not
be a City of Parramatta Councillor, hence
my thoughts are merely about the future of
the City of Parramatta.”
Other western Sydney Councils with a
popularly elected Mayor include The Hills
Shire and Fairfield City Councils.
Earlier this year a Penrith City Councillor
similarly attempted to put forward a
motion calling for a constitutional referendum,
however it was defeated.
Cr Dwyer said he appreciated most of
his Councillor colleagues do not intend to
support his motion, however he believes if
a constitutional referendum is deferred, it
will be “too late” for the City of Parramatta.
“We need to think about the future; if
this isn’t supported it won’t be until 2028
that we can revisit this again,” he said.
This year’s election is on September 4.
Troy Dodds
@troydodds
We must always remember
It may have been a little different to
what we’re used to, but ANZAC Day was
still very special on Sunday.
What we’ve learned this year and last is
that it doesn’t matter where or how you
commemorate this important day, it’s
that you do it at all.
Whether you stood on your driveway or
balcony, watched a livestream or managed
to get to a Dawn Service, the very
fact you dedicated a slice of your day to
those who fought for the lives we enjoy
today is so important.
We can never, ever lose this tradition.
It’s up to us to ensure it survives.
Joy of running with strangers
The Uber driver pulls up at the end of
the road. “What’s going on here?” he
turns to me, bewildered.
Trumper Street, Ermington certainly
looks a sight at 7.56am on what’s meant
to be a sleepy Saturday morning. Dozens
of men, women, boys and girls are
converging on George Kendall Riverside
Park from all directions. Some in hoodies,
others singlets, making a beeline for
the start line. Because everyone knows
the Parramatta parkrun starts at 8am. On
the dot.
It was so tempting not to bother. I’d
stopped doing parkrun when it got mothballed
during COVID.
And my car was conked out (hence the
last-minute Uber dash). But I’d faithfully
promised a friend.
Suddenly here we all were: an amazing
turnout of 301 runners doing our best to
socially distance as the race coordinator
barked out pre-event instructions and led
us in applause for the volunteers.
You might think what weird people
would want to do a timed 5-kilometre run
with hundreds of strangers when they
could be having breakfast in bed? You’d
be wrong. Parkrun might have once felt
like a cult. But it’s now a suburban phenomenon.
Horoscopes.................................18
Founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt in 2004,
the first race was staged in London. Since
then, the movement has gone global. Our
local franchise, which winds scenically
along the Parramatta River almost to Rydalmere
wharf before turning back – has
been staged 395 times.
The great thing at Ermo is everyone is
welcome. People pushing prams, chatting
with neighbours or running with dogs.
Primary school long distance champions.
Puffing 60-year-olds drenched in sweat.
Others taking it easy as they recover from
injury.
And I guess people like me, fast approaching
their mid-life crisis, where the
only sensible option might be to train for
that elusive marathon.
The lure of parkrun isn’t about the times
(although it still hurts to be overtaken by
a little squirt, one-quarter your size). But
the camaraderie from putting an event
together.
It really takes a community to make
each Saturday work – just as it took a pandemic
to stop it.
From the wardens who march out early
to mark the course, to the people scanning
barcodes, brandishing stopwatches
and performing first aid.
There’s a great spirit of mateship among
Entertainment ....................19-27
Business Directory ......28-30
runners too, as people encourage each
other or warn of approaching collisions
(because for some reason, the course also
seems to attract every cyclist this side of
the Tour De France).
In Sinton-Hewitt’s words: “The regularity
and reliability of parkrun provides
a comfort that comes from knowing it is
always the same time, the same place, the
same friendly faces. As is it for so many of
you, parkrun is my sanctuary.”
On this day, I’m a little rusty. And I ruefully
learn that socially distancing from
the lead pack won’t be a problem.
There’s a moment on the return leg
when you feel like petering out to a walk.
Particularly as you approach “Heartbreak
Hill”, the ironic name my friends have
coined for a slight ascent from the river
that’s only 10 metres long but inconvenient
nonetheless.
But something steels me. Maybe it’s the
thought of Corroboree Café at Ermington
shops after the race, home to the bestvalue
“big breakfast” in Sydney. Or simply
the knowledge that I’ve done the hard
part – getting out of bed – so I can bound
into the weekend with positivity and life
with new energy.
If you haven’t done so already, check
out parkrun.
Coroner says Granville schoolgirl was murdered
NICOLA BARTON
Missing Granville school girl
Quanne Diec died by homicide,
a Coroner has found but many
unanswered questions remain for her
family.
It’s been almost 23 years since the
12-year-old disappeared when walking
from her home to catch a train to school,
but to this day her body has never been
found. Despite the meticulous investigation
that followed no substantial evidence,
other than circumstantial, was uncovered.
NSW Police suspected she was deceased
and so the matter was referred to the Coroners
Court.
An inquest into her death commenced
recently where NSW Deputy State Coroner
Magistrate Derek Lee ruled that Quanne
died the day she went missing on July 27,
1998 or after.
Despite no solid evidence leading to the
place or precise cause of death, Mr Lee
found the victim died by homicide.
“It is most likely that Quanne went
missing, and died in suspicious circumstances,”
he found.
“The manner of death is therefore homicide.
“The absence of any postmortem examination
does not allow for any finding to be
made as to the precise cause of Quanne’s
death.”
The question as to where Quanne’s
remains lie and who is responsible
remains a mystery.
Despite former nightclub bouncer
Vinzent Tarantino previously confessing
to her murder, he was found not guilty of
the crime in 2019.
Mr Tarantino’s former partner Laila
Faily was the first to report his confessions
to police, claiming he admitted to murdering
Quanne by strangling her on his bed.
Mr Tarantino later confessed to police
himself, claiming it was a “ransom gone
wrong”.
He was subsequently charged with
murder, however later pleaded not guilty,
telling the Supreme Court he had only
made the admissions due to fear of reprisal
from members of an outlaw motorcycle
gang.
Without substantial evidence linking
him to the crime, he was found not guilty
in court.
Quanne Diec went missing in 1998.
He does, however, remain a person of
interest to police.
Mr Lee has recommended the case be
referred to the State Crime Command
Unsolved Homicide Team.
“It is hoped that one day some further
information will be provided to Quanne’s
family to hopefully allow them to find
some measure of solace from such a tragic
and devastating event,” he said.
Anzac memory lives on
Before dawn on 25 April 1915, the first
soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand
Army Corps landed on the shores of the
Gallipoli peninsula. They were some of at least
130,000 soldiers on both sides who lost their
lives at Gallipoli.
April 25th is not about military victory. Instead,
it’s a commemorative day when the loss of war
first scarred the conscience of Australia.
The loss was felt across the whole community.
Anzac Day has become an occasion to honour
all who have worn our country’s uniform in
service. It is a day of gatherings of veterans,
of reunions, of services, of community
involvement, of reflection and appreciating
our forebears.
Supporting small business
I met with the team at Lloyds Enterprise last
week in my ongoing effort to support thriving
small business.
Lloyds Enterprise engages high-net-worth
individuals and provides them with an array of
professional services. From business advisory,
corporate finance, management consulting
to large project consulting, Lloyds Enterprise
assists its clientele in growing their business to
a successfully sustainable entity with increased
wealth opportunities.
At Cumberland City Council we take pride in
supporting our local businesses.
Meet Your Mayor success
Every week I take a couple of hours to meet
with community face-to-face at shopping
centres, train stations and community centres
in what I’ve called “Meet Your Mayor”
sessions. It’s an opportunity for me to listen
to issues and concerns.
I’m proud to announce that over 300
enquiries have been raised at my weekly
“Meet Your Mayor” sessions since this
initiative began. To date, 86% of issues
raised have been resolved to our
residents’ satisfaction.
My approach has always been accessibility to
residents so I am glad we are able to achieve
outcomes together.
It’s important to look at the way we service
the community, and these face-to-face
sessions have been a real game changer
offering insight into what residents have
come to expect from Council.
In Cumberland City, we have a strong veteran
history. Anzac Day is of great importance
to me and honouring and respecting the
memory of our fallen soldiers and those who
have served our great nation will always be of
great priority to Cumberland City Council.
I will ensure we will continue to honour their
legacy with monuments across the region
dedicated to those who have served.
It has been over 100 years since the First
World War ended. But these Australians
paved the way for the freedoms and values
we cherish today.
We will continue to honour their courage and
continue to support and encourage our local
RSLs with all resources available to us.
We will continue to support our residents and local
businesses to the best of our abilities with every
resource available to us.
Mayor Steve Christou with Joseph Moussa and George Tamer
I am regularly approached on a range of
topics from infrastructure upgrades to parks,
Seven Hills: Police appeal for help
after robbery and assault
Police are investigating after a man was
injured during a robbery and assault at
Seven Hills recently.
About 11.20pm on Monday, April 19,
a man was walking towards his parked
car on Best Road when he noticed a man
inside.
As he neared the Audi, the other man
saw him approaching and ran from the
scene.
The owner of the car chased the man in
his vehicle into Boomerang Place where
he stopped and confronted the other
man and an altercation commenced.
Police have been told the man produced
a weapon and assaulted the driver before
running into Seven Hills Railway Station.
It is believed cash was stolen during the
incident.
Officers from Blacktown Police Area
Command attended and established a
The 43-year-old man was treated at the
Bridge is quite a sight
Construction continues on
NICOLA BARTON
big infrastructure project
If you drive on James Ruse Drive, it’s
unlikely you’ll miss it, as the second
longest steel arch bridge in the state is
assembled.
The bridge, once completed, will connect
light rail users, cyclists and pedestrians
when the Parramatta Light Rail opens in
2023.
Minister for Transport and Roads
Andrew Constance said the biggest of
the six bridges being constructed for the
project will stretch across six lanes of
traffic on James Ruse Drive in Rosehill, to
accommodate the new light rail and walking
and bike-riding path.
“The giant bronze arches will be an
amazing sight for locals and anyone travelling
through the area,” he said.
“The new bridge has the second longest
steel arch bridge span in the state, behind
the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“This bridge is currently on a construction
site next to James Ruse Drive, where
the fabricated steelwork, each piece
weighing up to 60 tonnes, has been assembled
to build the 15-metre-high steel arch.”
It’s hard to miss construction of the new bridge. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
The Australian-made steelwork for the
bridge was fabricated by western Sydney
based company, S&L Steel, before it was
transported to Rosehill for assembly.
Parramatta MP Geoff Lee said the
project is committed to using Australian
resources wherever possible and supporting
local jobs.
“The Australian steel was fabricated in
a workshop at Rooty Hill, creating around
50 jobs for western Sydney,” he said.
“The bridge will be a great asset for the
local community as it will not only support
the new light rail, but it will make it much
safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross
the very busy James Ruse Drive.”
Over the coming weeks, the temporary
support frames will be removed, and
the arch will be fitted out with precast
concrete, concrete deck, precast concrete
barriers, and temporary steel railing and
protection screens.
After this is completed, the 1425-tonne
steel and concrete structure will be lifted
into place during a weekend closure of
James Ruse Drive at some point in the
coming months.
Honour fallen Anzacs by
supporting our veterans
Anzac Day in 2020 was very different for all of us.
The ceremonies and marches were cancelled, but people in
Parramatta still found ways to pay our respects under COVID
restrictions.
I joined people ar ound Australia reflecting on the sacrific es
made by our veterans and those who continue to serve by
holding my own dawn service on my balcony as part of Light
up the Dawn.
While we lit candles in socially dis tanced safety, defence
personnel worked tirelessly to support the pandemic response.
Their efforts contact tracing, in quarantine and at state border
checkpoints helped s top the spread and make community
commemorations possible this year.
On Sunday I was honoured to be part of services held by
the City of Parramatta RSL Sub-branch, Granville RSL Subbranch
and the Consortium of Tamil Associations NSW in
Wentworthville.
This is important – but our support f or veterans shouldn’t start
and finish with symbolic recognition on Anzac Day.
Since the start of the Afghan war, we have lost many more
veterans to suicide than soldiers killed in combat.
Veterans have been telling us for years now that we need a
Royal Commission into this unending tragedy. The Morrison
Government resisted their calls – proposing a National
Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention,
More affordable child care
Australians pay some of the highest child care
costs in the world. In fact, fees have gone up
more than 35% under the Liberals. That’s why
Labor will make it more affordable for 97% of
families with childr en in child care – scan the QR
code to find out how much you’ll save.
Julie Owens Bulletin
despite veterans’ concerns that it would not have the
independence, scope or resources of a Royal Commission –
before finally calling a R oyal Commission last week.
Labor is disappoint ed this has taken so long, but we are
ready to work with the Government to make sure this Royal
Commission has the strong and broad powers and Terms of
Reference that it needs.
Unfortunately, early reports indicate that it will not cover
the role of departments lik e Defence and Veterans’ Affairs,
previous reviews and inquiries like the 2019 Productivity
Commission report, veteran homelessness, or the impact of
anti-malarial drug trials on v eterans’ mental health.
The Morrison Government needs to do better – and the first
step is to consult widely on how the Royal Commission should
be run. This means listening to the voices of the veterans’
community and the families of veterans who have tragically
died by suicide and can no longer speak f or themselves.
One of the best ways to honour the service of our fallen
diggers is to look after our living servic e men and women
and their families through a strong veteran support system.
Listening to the voices of veterans and their families through
this Royal Commission is a crucial s tep towards building one.
no question players need to make
A
charity for children with
rare forms of dementia
will receive a generous
residents banded together for
the worthy cause.
Laing+Simmons Wentworthville
Sales Manager, Leon
community initiative after a
twist of fate saw him help local
resident, Ingrid Maack purchase
her new home.
Ms Maack has been heavily
involved with fundraising initiatives
for the Sanfilippo Children’s
Foundation.
Sanfilippo is a rare genetic
condition that causes childhood
dementia and fatal brain damage.
Most children with the condition
never reach adulthood.
When Mr Gietzmann heard of
Mr Gietzmann wanted to help
in a way that was close to his own
heart: gardening.
“I’m a green thumb throughand-through,
and I run a plant
A
new program aimed at improving
work prospects for older
Australians with disability is
coming to western Sydney.
AimBig Employment will launch its
pilot SkillRestart program this month,
with the aim to challenge stereotypes
and increase job opportunities for
mature workers with disability.
The most recent review into Australia’s
retirement income system found
that almost 20 per cent of Australians
between 55 and 64-years-old were
receiving either JobSeeker, the Carer
Payment or the Disability Support
Pension.
It also highlighted that it usually took
much longer for older Australians to find
a new job than younger job seekers.
Add disability into the mix and the
employment opportunities for mature
workers become even scarcer.
SkillRestart is a practical, hands-on
group training program that runs for 12
weeks. At the same time participants
will be working towards a Certificate
III in Business and work with real businesses
throughout the training to come
out with practical experience.
AimBig Employment General Manager
Terry Wilson said the focus on digital
literacy and confidence is critical.
LOCAL NEWS
New program aims to help
locals find employment
NICOLA BARTON
A new jobs program is headed our way.
“It is easy to feel left behind with today’s
rapidly changing workplace technology
and software, particularly if you never
worked in an office environment or have
experienced a break in employment,” he
said.
“Unfortunately, the odds are unfairly
stacked against mature Australians
with disability, but employers can get so
much from this group if they are willing
to give them a chance.”
AimBig Employment are looking for
participants in western Sydney to take
part in the free pilot program.
Participants must be over 50-years-old
and have a disability.
LOCAL NEWS
Property attracts big price
$12.3 million sale proves popularity of Lidcombe
NICOLA BARTON
An Adidas-anchored, blue-chip
property in Lidcombe has sold to
a private investor for a whopping
$12.3 million.
The sale of the property, situated at 55-59
Parramatta Road, Lidcombe represents a
net yield of 5.6 per cent, making it a landmark
high-profile investment in the area.
Real estate professionals believe it
indicates high investment interest in
Lidcombe and surrounding suburbs.
The property was marketed and sold by
Ray White Commercial Western Sydney
Senior Sales Executive Jai Sethi, Managing
Director Peter Vines, and Asian Investment
Services Director Victor Sheu.
Fully leased, the 2,595sqm space on a
prominent corner block was offered to the
market via expressions of interest.
Mr Sethi said they received over 100
enquiries, issuing multiple contracts as
the campaign rolled out, with buyer interest
from across the country.
“This fully leased asset represented a
highly sought-after opportunity to acquire
a secure investment with projected future
A property on Parramatta Road at Lidcombe has attracted a huge sale price.
upside in the epicentre of the Parramatta
Road bulky goods retail corridor,” he said.
“We believe that convenience-based
retail is hugely benefitting from consumers
not having to go into shopping centres.
“The potential to value-add, reposition
or redevelop with bonus FSR available for
specific developments (subject to council
approval), really appealed to the investment
market.
“The property also benefits from the high
exposure corner position on Parramatta
Road which accommodates over three
million commuters every year.”
The building is currently anchored
by Adidas and is further occupied by a
number of other tenants.
Mr Sheu said Lidcombe is an attractive
suburb for prospective investors.
“One of the most well-equipped suburbs
in all of Sydney, Lidcombe is home to an
immense amount of variety in multiple
forms – housing, businesses, restaurants,
streetscapes, and even cultures,” he said.
“The range of interest received as part of
the campaign was local Asian groups.
“Some were occupiers looking to potentially
take over part of the building, but a
number were investors with a view to hold
and tap into the underlying upside of the
location in the future.
“Deals like the recent $129.5 million sale
of Auburn Central shopping centre tells
us that Lidcombe and areas around this
suburb are becoming a real attraction for
the investor market.”
Getting back on track
After the pandemic drove us to the pantry, it’s time for a health overhaul
NICOLA BARTON
It’s an understatement to say the past
12 months have been a rollercoaster,
from pandemic health concerns and
economic uncertainty, to lockdown and
restrictions; but what impact has it had
on our waistlines?
According to a CSIRO survey undertaken
in June last year, 34 per cent of Australians
reported frequently raiding the pantry
for snacks, with 32 per cent reporting
increased ‘comfort eating’ of junk foods.
The issue of unhealthy eating habits and
being overweight is nothing new, with 25.5
per cent of the Parramatta Local Government
Area considered as being obese,
according to 2019 data released by the
Mitchell Institute.
Local Dietician and Newington-local,
Tuo Tao says it’s time to get back on track.
“The statistics show a lot of people put
on weight during the pandemic,” he told
Parra News.
“When people started working from
home, they began snacking a lot more,
they lost their usual structure of eating
and others weren’t exercising as much.”
Dietician Tuo Tao doing a supermarket tour with a customer.
Last year during the pandemic’s peak, Mr
Tao launched an online platform and free
Facebook community called Eat Savvi,
aimed at providing tips for individuals,
couples and families to make positive,
healthy changes in their lives.
When it comes to knowing which products
to choose, fads and placebos can
make it difficult to navigate through the
wealth of products available.
Uniquely for Parramatta, as a place of
such rich diversity, it’s not a simple cookie
cutter approach when it comes to improving
your diet.
“It can be overwhelming with all the
thousands of types of foods on offer and
that prompted me to help people navigate
that, not just through the pandemic but to
make long term lifestyle changes,” Mr Tao
said.
“Now I use social media to provide hands
on tips, catered to different cultures and
lifestyles and also talk about a lot of trendy
foods and what is good or not good.”
For those who don’t know where to start,
Mr Tao says “be mindful”.
“My first tip to start with is always to be
mindful when it comes to food and to use
all your sensations to enjoy food,” Mr Tao
said.
“Get 100 per cent satisfaction from the
foods you love, rather than just scoffing
down so that when you do have them you
are really taking that in.
“Cutting out carbohydrates and sugar
is important but easier said than done so
start small.”
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
The current planetary placements (the
Sun, Mercury, Venus and Uranus are
visiting your home zone and Saturn is
sauntering through your sign) are teaching
you to slow down and appreciate
the wisdom in your world, the people
in your life and the love in your heart.
So be inspired by birthday great, singersongwriter
Willie Nelson: “I take it not
only a day at a time, but a moment at a
time, and keep it at that pace. If you can
be happy right now, then you’ll always
be happy”.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY BOHO ASTRO - JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
You need to be clear and straightforward
in the way you communicate with
other people this week. Don’t waste precious
time pussyfooting around or being
‘creatively elastic’ with the truth. With
four planets in earthy Taurus, it’s time
to be a more practical Pisces and stick
to the facts, especially when it comes to
relatives, neighbours and local community
matters. By all means escape into a
fabulous fantasy world – but make sure
you can step back into reality when it’s
required!
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Monday night’s Full Supermoon increases
your magnetism and boosts
your ability to inspire others and transform
your own life. So do your best to
find appropriate ways to let off steam
and choose challenging projects to
channel your fiery energy into. A major
relationship (whether of the romantic,
platonic or professional variety) could
also go through a metamorphosis, as
you voice your concerns in a respectful
way and work through a problem that’s
been holding you back.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
With unpredictable Uranus still moving
slowly through Taurus, old rules
have changed and outdated ideologies
have been replaced. Change, disruption
and transformation are the new norm.
So businesses need to innovate; communities
need to be creative; people
need to pivot; and Bulls need to be very
adaptable. So your motto for the moment
is from birthday great, comedian
and producer Jerry Seinfeld: “If life boils
down to one thing, it’s movement. To
live is to keep moving”.
GEMINI
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Avoid being a superficial and garrulous
Gemini. You’ll find there’s a lot
more going on beneath the surface than
meets the eye. The planets (especially
the Supermoon in Scorpio) encourage
you to slow down, strip back the layers
of polite conversation, dive deep, listen
and do some learning. Venus, Neptune
and Pluto also boost creativity, compassion,
perception and intuition. So you’ll
find thoughtful observation and insightful
soul-searching will take you far this
week Twins.
On Monday night there’s a Full Supermoon
(in fellow water sign Scorpio).
So expect an emotionally intense week
when unresolved issues with a partner,
family member or close friend could
rise to the surface and demand to be
addressed. Jealousy, possessiveness or
power games could also be cause for
concern. Resist the urge to be a sidestepping
Crab! Do your best to keep
things in perspective, as you deal with
any drama in a straightforward and honest
way.
Watch out for domestic dramas this
week, as the Full Supermoon shines a
harsh spotlight on a brewing and stewing
family situation. Being housebound,
quarantine rules, lockdowns laws or
social distancing guidelines could contribute
to you feeling restless and rather
reckless! Clever Cats will cool down,
calm down and observe keenly from
the sidelines. Friday night’s Sun/Uranus
conjunction could spark a brilliant creative
idea that shakes up your career or
helps you find a new job.
This week you’re in a curious state of
mind, as Mercury and the Full Supermoon
generate a promising opportunity
involving international connections,
publishing, education or social media.
So get your ideas out there on the world
wide web, as you inform and entertain
others with your mercurial thoughts.
Your motto for the moment is from
writer (and fellow Virgo) Samuel Johnson:
“Curiosity is one of the permanent
and certain characteristics of a vigorous
mind”.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
The buzz word this week is transformation.
Librans have a talent for creating
beauty … in the way you speak, sing,
write, dance, dress, draw, decorate, cook
or just generally create. So that’s what
you must do. In a world full of sickness,
uncertainty and financial problems, you
can divert people’s attention to a more
beautiful and magical place. Be inspired
by birthday great, comedian Jerry Seinfeld:
“When someone does a small task
beautifully, their whole environment is
affected by it”.
Metamorphosis is the name of the
game, as the Full Supermoon in Scorpio
pushes you to rise Phoenix-like from
the ashes of a difficult situation. A challenging
relationship has the potential
to be reborn into a much more positive
partnership. But you must be prepared
to release old grudges; let go of the past;
forgive and forget. So your motto is from
birthday great, writer Harper Lee: “You
can’t really get to know a person until
you get in their shoes and walk around
in them”.
Innovative ideas and lightning flashes
of inspiration make for a thought-provoking
week. But there’s a tendency to
be a real know-it-all (especially at work)
and you’re likely to blurt out the most inappropriate
comment to the most inappropriate
person. So take your foot out
of your mouth and think things through
(carefully) before you speak! Heed the
wise words of birthday great, writer
Harper Lee: “Folks don’t like to have
somebody around knowing more than
they do”.
Can you keep your control-freak tendencies
under control this week? If you
can, then you’ll astound and amaze others
with your can-do Capricorn attitude,
your natural personal authority, your
networking skills and talent for leadership.
You’re ready, willing and able to
work hard and help others. Just make
sure you are generous and inclusive
as you encourage family, friends, colleagues
and community members to
pull together during the ongoing COVID
challenge.
STILL MAKING
MEMORABLE MUSIC
ERIN CHRISTIE
After many years in the industry,
Kevin Mitchell – more
commonly known these days
as Bob Evans – is still finding
ways to challenge himself and
create great music.
His much-anticipated new album, ‘Tomorrowland’,
has been out for just one
week, but already he is keeping himself
preoccupied with thoughts of what might
come next.
The 43-year-old rose to fame with Jebediah,
the popular ‘90s act made up of himself,
Chris Daymond, Vanessa Thornton,
and Kevin’s brother Brett, whom he had
been ‘performing’ with for many years already.
“My older brother, Brett – he had a cassette
tape of the band Kiss, and me and my
brothers all had masks, Kiss masks,” Kevin
said in a chat with Parra News.
“I had the drummer, Peter Criss … we
used to listen to ‘Dynasty’ by Kiss and put
on our masks and get these plastic tennis
racquets and put on mini concerts in our
bedrooms.
“I always loved music and loved being
around it.”
After begging his mother to enrol him in
dance classes at age seven, Kevin began
to play instruments and write songs at
12. Now, with almost three decades in the
industry, he believes he has matured as a
musician.
“I used to believe in the idea that inspiration
is a lightning strike, you just had to
wait for it to happen,” he said.
“I’ve been doing this for 26 years now
since Jebediah started … along the way I
started to change my belief that if you wait
for inspiration to happen, you’re not putting
yourself in the best position for it.”
A testament to this, Kevin demonstrates
an ongoing love of creating music that has
kept him working across both his solo act
and Jebediah, who are touring this year.
“I think there’s a nostalgia factor for people
coming to watch Jebediah,” he said.
“For us, it’s not so much a nostalgia thing,
but it is a little bit like time-travel.
“When we walk on stage it’s kind of like
getting into a time machine, and for the 45
minutes that we’re on stage, it’s kind of like
we all turn into teenagers again.
“I think that’s what the crowd is experiencing
as well.”
Although his work as Bob Evans keeps
him busy, he says that Jebediah has also
been working on an album over the last
few years.
“I like to think that we’ve still got another
record left in us to make,” he said.
Bob Evans’ brand new album ‘Tomorrowland’
is available now to buy or
stream.
At the movies...
Plenty of lessons to take from historical epic
THE COURIER

1 hour, 51 minutes
ERIN CHRISTIE
Based on the gut-wrenching true
story of a Soviet agent and the kindhearted
man recruited to help him,
‘The Courier’ is a gripping watch for
any modern history buff.
However, going in with no prior
knowledge of the Cuban Missile Crisis
makes this film as educational as it
is exciting.
Greville Wynne, a talented salesman,
was recruited by MI6 given his
frequent trips to Eastern Europe, to
act as a courier passing state secrets
from Soviet spy Oleg Penkovsky onto
the British and American authorities.
The information passed on by Penkovsky
was essential to the UK’s discovery
of Soviet emplacement of missiles
in Cuba during one of the most hostile
crises of the last 100 years.
Wynne is played by Benedict Cumberbatch
in a rare role where the audience
can easily forget the presence of
such a renowned actor; he slips into
the character effortlessly. He is supported
by a believable crew of actors,
including Rachel Brosnahan, a seasoned
comedy actress, who manages
to hit her stride as Emily Donovan, a
dedicated CIA agent torn between her
dedication to her work and saving the
lives of Wynne and Penkovsky.
There are many lessons to take from
this film, but also how as individuals,
we can help change the world.
TV NEWS
The new season of ‘Big Brother’
premiered last night on Channel Seven
and continues tonight. Like last year, this
season has been filmed in advance, except
for a live finale in which viewers can
choose the winner. Sonia Kruger returns
as host.
A second season of ‘The Hills: New
Beginnings’, a sequel to the famed docuseries
‘The Hills’, will premiere at 8.30pm
on Thursday, May 13 on MTV. After a year
of lockdowns and lost time, the cast of
Hollywood’s most iconic friend group
is reuniting. This season finds them at
a crossroads and their lives tested like
never before. Audrina Patridge, Ashley
Wahler, Brandon Thomas Lee, Brody Jenner,
Frankie Delgado, Heidi Pratt, Jason
Wahler, Jennifer Delgado, Justin “Bobby”
Brescia, Kaitlynn Carter, Spencer Pratt
and Whitney Port return alongside newcomer
Caroline D’Amore. Kristin Cavallari
will also appear.
Streaming from Friday, July 30,
‘Watch the Sound with Mark Ronson’, a
new six-part docuseries coming to Apple
TV+ will examine sound creation and the
revolutionary technology that has shaped
music as we know it. The series will
feature Paul McCartney, Questlove, King
Princess, Dave Grohl, Adrock and Mike
D from the Beastie Boys, Charli XCX and
more. Each episode of ‘Watch the Sound
with Mark Ronson’ will follow Ronson
as he uncovers the untold stories behind
music creation and the lengths producers
and creators are willing to go to find the
perfect sound.
UK drama ‘Call the Midwife’ has been
renewed for two more seasons, taking
it to Series 12 and 13, the latter in 2024.
Season 10 is currently airing on Monday
nights on BBC First.
Just as production is getting underway
on the second season, Netflix has
renewed hit romance ‘Bridgerton’ for
a third and fourth. ‘Bridgerton’ was a
runaway hit last year, so Netflix must be
very confident in the show to make this
decision.
New Zack Snyder movie ‘Army of the
Dead’ will drop on Netflix on Friday, May
21. Following a zombie outbreak in Las
Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the
ultimate gamble, venturing in the quarantine
zone to pull off the greatest heist ever
attempted. The film stars former wrestler
turned action hero David Bautista.
Smash hit cop drama ‘Blue Bloods’
has been renewed for a 12th season. The
show airs inconsistently on Channel 10
in Australia but has been a Friday night
staple in the US for more than a decade.
It is currently mid-way through airing its
11th season.
GWM makes its mark
The game-changing Haval H6 arrives in showrooms across Australia
NATHAN TAYLOR
The all-new Haval H6 is now
on sale with first deliveries
and demonstrator models
now in all 54 GWM Australian
showrooms.
Demand for the company’s highly
anticipated new mid-sized SUV
is expected to be strong with a
number of dealers having already
taken deposits from customers
eager to be amongst the first to own
a new H6.
The all-new Haval H6 range kicks
off from $30,990 Driveaway for the
feature-packed H6 Premium 2WD
with 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol
engine good for 150kW and 320Nm
and mated to a 7-speed Dual Clutch
Transmission.
Next is the mid-spec H6 Lux 2WD
at $33,990 Driveaway with the
range-topping H6 Ultra at $36,990
Driveaway for 2WD and $38,990
Driveaway for 4WD.
All new Haval H6’s are backed
by a seven-year unlimited km
warranty and five years roadside
assist. A Capped Price Servicing
program will also be available on
H6 to ensure that the significant
value being offered at purchase is
continued throughout the ownership
period.
As a replacement for the previous
generation H6, the all-new H6 is
more advanced in almost every
way and loaded with levels of technology
and standard active safety
features that are usually only found
in SUVs at higher price brackets.
Initial customer demand indicates
that the mid and high grades
will be the volume sellers, mirroring
what has been seen with the
GWM Ute since launch.
The all-new Haval H6 is the first of
a new generation of SUV products
that will further define GWM in
Australia and which are expected
to confirm the brand as a serious
player in the country’s highly
competitive new car market.
Full specifications for the all-new
Haval H6 can be found at www.
Dragway ready for racing
Major refurbishment of Sydney Dragway complete; Nitro Thunder on next month
NATHAN TAYLOR
Racers at Sydney Dragway are
set for their best performances,
with the resurfacing works
officially opened last Wednesday.
Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the
new international standard surface
forms part of the NSW Government’s
$33 million upgrade of facilities at
Sydney Motorsport Park.
“The NSW Government is committed
to providing high quality and
safe motorsport facilities and the
resurfacing of the Sydney Dragway
will be heavily used by the drag racing
community,” he said
“This upgrade replaces the previous
15-year-old surface, providing a worldclass
surface for races of all levels.”
Key features of the surface upgrades
include a new, continuously reinforced
concrete surface, as well as significant
upgrades to the grandstand, corporate
facilities, lighting and power, amenities
and general building maintenance.
“These upgrades will provide an
outstanding event experience for petrol
heads and motor racing lovers,” Mr Lee
said.
Sydney Dragway General Manager,
Darryl Stephen, said he’s looking
forward to their first major event at the
Eastern Creek facility since the refurbishments.
“We’ve already seen some world
record setting performances on the
new surface in testing, and we are looking
forward to opening our doors for
our fans to enjoy the facilities here at
Sydney Dragway for the Gulf Western
Oil Nitro Thunder on May 6 and 7,” he
said.
“I would like to thank the NSW
Government, Western Sydney Parklands
Trust, NSW Office of Sport and
the Drag Racing community for their
support throughout the project and
venue upgrades.”
The new surface will be used for an
exciting calendar of events in 2021.
