Executive Director
Summer 2021 5
MRD
Executive Director
Mari Steinbach
Welcome to summer!
We at the MRD could not be more rejuvenated, grateful, and
delighted to see the re-emergence of summer! To say that we are
stoked to rejoin safely with you in classes, activities, wellness, and
pure fun is an understatement.
First up, let’s get back to doing the activities that bring you joy:
whether inside the Field House or the Community Recreation
Center, or outside in the brilliant sunshine. Discover the parks in
new ways: take a stroll, run the river, hike a trail, pedal the bike,
chase a butterfly, grow some greens, smell the flowers, ride the
zipline….you get the idea!
As you do these things and so much more this summer, we’ll be
asking you to share with us your needs and expectations for your
parks and recreation system. Tell us the things that make you
happy, the ways you use or want to use your parks, and the services
you want us to provide. How will you tell us these things? Through
the MRD’s Comprehensive Master Plan Update! We kicked off the
entire process in March and plan to complete it this December.
Together with our planning consultant team, we are working to
clearly detail the current services we provide, identify growth,
trends and potential, and determine the public process we will
go through to gather, rank and prioritize citizen demand and the
opportunities we have.
The District’s last plan was completed in 2005, with a minor update
in 2009. We believe a holistic, system-wide approach is critical so that
the District and City can jointly plan parks and recreation services to
ensure an appropriate balance of parks and recreation facilities and
amenities now and into the future. The planning team will collect
and analyze data from within both the District and the City’s parks
and recreation systems to develop a clear roadmap for the next ten
(10) years and to identify opportunities for District and City action.
We will be on the lookout for you this summer so that you can
weigh in with your opinions about the MRD’s services, because by
far the most important part is hearing from you.
We have such a great team of staff at the MRD, who work hard
EVERY day to ensure your wellness and happiness. We’re pleased
to announce these staff changes:
Debby Harrison - Zarkis joins the MRD staff in a brandnew
position of Administrative Operations Assistant and
will coordinate office administration, internal and external
communication, and special projects.
Justin Mashburn has been promoted to Facilities Manager and
will oversee operations of our recreation facilities such as the
CRC and the Field House. Justin leaves massive shoes to fill in his
previous role as Recreation Coordinator – Youth programs; he’s
made an indelible impression on so many kids and their families
over the years!
Matt Imus has been promoted to Recreation Coordinator –
Youth programs, having worked as Recreation Leader for the
past three years. Matt has worked side-by-side with Justin and
all the other staff so that there will be a seamless transition
from Justin’s work. We’re excited to see Matt shine with more
responsibilities!
Lisa Lopez joins the MRD as our new Human Resources
Generalist. She will handle payroll, benefits, recruiting, and all the
other general HR functions for the District.
We continue to recruit to replace the Recreation Leader as well as
many other part time positions – see our website for a full list!
A final thought: after a year of COVID-19 struggles, our team
has learned so much, including a re-affirmation of just how truly
essential parks and recreation services are to ensuring that our
community thrives. Throughout it all, our staff has kept our
fingers on the pulse of all things COVID and learning ways that
other providers were adapting and how we could adjust our
services to keep serving you. We will continue to serve you, our
community, in every way possible, despite the tighter budget we
now have, the staff, facility members and participants we have lost,
and continuing obstacles we face. We persist in our commitment
to pivot and adjust and keep bringing the fun. We are proud to
serve Montrose.
In gratitude for our remarkable community in this beautiful place
we call home,
Mari

Montrose Recreation District’s Board of Directors
Welcome to Summer!
The Board of Directors and sta of the Montrose Recreation District are excited to bring you summer as
never before, with all of the wonderful news and activities that we know you have been awaiting!
I, for one, am excited that we are bringing back activities we all love and possibly had taken for granted. It
has been a year since we published our last guide, and oh what a year it has been. We are optimistic that we
will be able to have all of the activities you will nd in this guide and that you are as enthusiastic about them
as we are.
I have a renewed excitement about seeing kids splashing around at the outdoor pool, taking swim lessons
and chasing each other around the ball elds. I am thrilled to again host pickleball and lacrosse tournaments
and I look forward to hearing stories of adventure and camaraderie as we start senior trips again. I love the
big smiles, squeals of delight and the general activity that I have come to associate with Montrose, summer
and the MRD.
The new playground at Holly Park has been busy all winter and will continue to be as we prepare to open
Holly Field for play and Riverbottom Drive for access. The new community garden is in at the Field House
and I am excited about all the new opportunities that are available to all of us.
In addition to all of the activities you can find in this guide, we are also busy working behind the scenes
to make the MRD better. In March we kicked off the long-awaited comprehensive master planning effort.
We will be working with our consultants and the City to create a plan for parks and recreation services in
the District that will be used as a roadmap for the next ten years. We will be evaluating the recreation needs
and desires of the current population of the District and the future growth potential. Look for plenty of
opportunities for you to weigh in with your opinions about MRD’s services and future. We want to hear
from you.
The entire staff and Board team is eager to work with our community to provide the activities we love and
need, as well as looking to the future of what we need. We are eager to reconnect with so many of you in the
programs and services you have come to expect, know and love.
Yay Summer!

WATER AEROBICS
Make a splash with water exercise!
Whether you are just beginning an exercise regime, or want to beat
the boredom out of your usual workout, Water Aerobics is a fantastic
solution. Water Aerobics offers remarkable cardiovascular benefits
and works out the entire body without putting stress on the bones
and joints. People are able to work out longer due to the cooling
effects of the water, and consequently, burn more calories. Experts
say that this type of exercise is superior because of the multidimensional
resistance the workout provides. In addition, studies
have shown that being in the water causes the body to release
chemicals similar to those released in deep meditation. You get great
physical and mental benefits, all in one workout!
