Pair to part with works<br />

Acollection of artworkthat has inspired its<br />

owners for more than 20 years is attracting<br />

considerable attentioninanexhibition.<br />

The works,byLytteltonartist Roger Hickin,<br />

are being offered for sale by Ohoka’sJilly and<br />

Christopher Marshall at the Roger Hickin<br />

WorksFrom 1989­2009 exhibition in the<br />

Rangiora Library’s Chamber Gallery.<br />

‘‘It is ratherdifficult to let them go butasI<br />

am now 81, sometimes you have got to say<br />

goodbye to old friends earlier thanyou might<br />

wish,’’ Christopher said.<br />

The coupledecided to holdthe exhibition at<br />

the Rangiora gallery rather than at abigger city<br />

gallery because of Christopher’s previous<br />

involvementwith the WaimakaririArts<br />

Council.<br />

‘‘I have chosen the ChamberGallery in<br />

Rangiora, which is part of the Waimakariri<br />

Arts Council, as its host, to benefit in asmall<br />

financial way through the commission on<br />

sales,’’ he said.<br />

Mr Hickin is also anotedpoet, translator,<br />

publisher, picture framer and former owner<br />

of Under the RedVerandah Cafe in<br />

Christchurch, where he established agallery<br />

for his artwork.<br />

He has exhibitedregularlythroughout New<br />

Zealand since 1985and has work in the<br />

Christchurch Art Gallery.<br />

His workisinfluenced by two of New<br />

Zealand’s most well­knownartists, the late<br />

RalphHotereand the late ColinMcCahon, and<br />

oftenfeatures beautifullycrafted recycled<br />

kauri, totara, and matai timber.<br />

Rogerdescribes his ownartwork as havinga<br />

‘‘makeshiftapproach to the metaphysical’’.<br />

The exhibition runs untilThursday, May, 6.<br />

Cars cruise<br />

Fifty­two cars joined the 50th<br />

anniversary cruise of the<br />

American Classic Car Club<br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong>. The milestone was<br />

celebrated with the reenactment<br />

of the cruise held in<br />

1971 when the club, which began<br />

lifeasthePostVintage and<br />

AmericanClassicCarClub,was<br />

formed.The cruise took<br />

participants from Belfastto<br />

Hawarden,via Sefton, Balcairn<br />

andAmberley. The contingent<br />

enjoyed abarbecue lunch<br />

providedbythe Hawarden<br />

Netball Club. Club members<br />

thenheaded south for the rest of<br />

the weekend, for an evening<br />

celebration at avineyard. The<br />

two­day cruise ended at<br />

Rolleston.<br />
