At last we’re coming out of lockdown, the evenings 

are lighter longer and we can hope for warmer 

weather. 

We applaud those businesses which have prepared 

diligently to reopen their doors once more and we 

encourage you to support the local traders and shop 

locally. 

We can enjoy eating out and mixing with friends 

and family (within government guidelines). Life may 

seem a little happier once again but please remain 

mindful we are not out of the woods yet. If you don’t

It’s been a joy to work with the young journalists 

from our local schools. Please read what they have

The Big Community 

Take Away 

The Big Community Take Away was set 

up at the beginning of the Covid-19 

pandemic to help feed people most in 

need in Chesham. Between April 2020 

and February 2021, the organisation 

has delivered over 7,000 hot meals in the 

Chesham and Amersham area. 47% of 

these were for children, whose parents 

were often going without food themselves. 

It’s become increasingly clear that, even when 

the pandemic is over, food poverty is a very 

real issue in the Chilterns and there is a huge 

need for our service. 

We are now expanding our work to have 

a permanent operation to cover Amersham 

and Little Chalfont. If you run a pub or 

restaurant that could help us, please get in 

touch via email on bcta.hq@gmail.com. 

Amersham Football 

Festival 3rd July 

King’s Church Amersham FC (KCA FC), a 

local junior football club, are delighted to 

announce their first ever Football Festival 

at Amersham Town FC’s Spratleys Meadow 

ground on Saturday 3rd July 2021. 

The day will feature a 

5/6-a-side round-robin 

tournament for all existing 

club players on the main 

pitch. The clubs under 

18s team will be given a 

fantastic send off as they 

leave the club with an 

11-a-side match against 

Amersham Town FC. The day will include a 

sizzling BBQ, the new clubhouse bar open 

all day, fun and games for all ages and the 

chance to see one of the Euro 2020/21 

semi-finals on screens in the clubhouse.

A tribute to Dame 

Cheryl Gillan 

It is with immense sadness that we pay 

tribute to our MP the Rt Hon Dame Cheryl 

Gillan who passed away on Saturday 4th 

April. 

Dame Cheryl had been very poorly for some time 

but carried the burden of her illness with great 

fortitude, never faltering in her efforts to look after 

her constituents, always helping so many people 

throughout her time in Parliament. 

She was an indefatigable campaigner for many 

causes, most notably fighting the detrimental 

impact of HS2 and being a champion on all 

matters relating to autism. In 2018, in recognition 

of Cheryl’s accomplishments, she was made a 

Dame Commander of the British Empire. 

Baroness (Emma) Pidding CBE had the privilege 

of knowing Cheryl since she was first selected 

for the constituency of Chesham & Amersham 

ahead of the 1992 General Election and she says, 

“Cheryl’s obvious talents were well recognised 

throughout Westminster and beyond. She shone 

as a bright star, having been appointed to her 

first of many Government positions in 1995, 

culminating as Secretary of State for Wales (her 

place of birth) in 2010 and had been our MP for 

29 years”.

THE YOUNG 

Enjoying summer 

the Amersham Way 

I think I speak for many students in 

being glad to be back at school, but the 

strict routine five-days-a-week risks life 

becoming rather drab. 

The talk of an imminent summer provides a 

beacon of hope, excitement and ‘irksome 

shrieks’ from me and my friends at the thought 

of being able to undertake postponed and 

cancelled plans as restrictions are lifted. In the 

words of an Amersham School student, ‘I hope 

it’s not as short lived as last time’… 

I asked a group 

of school council 

students, to 

understand how 

they felt about 

restrictions being 

lifted, and what 

they planned 

to do for the 

summer. Most 

hoped to explore 

new places with 

friends, being 

able to visit safely 

and spend 

time with family 

following a close 

second. Most students said that they couldn’t 

wait, and were excited to be ‘let out’ as soon 

as possible. Some felt both excitement and 

nervousness; others were concerned that 

COVID-19 cases would go up. Nevertheless, 

there was an overriding sense of anticipation, as 

students were desperate to feel free and enjoy 

themselves in a way that has been restricted for 

the last year. 

‘I’m excited about going to my friends’ house to 

watch movies and hang out together.’ 

‘I will feel so free and happy [when doing 

activities in the summer post-lockdown].’ 

‘I am really excited about doing fun activities in 

the summer, but nervous there is going to be 

another lockdown.’ 

‘I am so excited and ready to get back to society, 

but COVID has to be taken seriously.’ 

The things students can’t wait to do in the 

summer varied from places like Woodrow, 

to taking a trip down to Tesco. Many Amersham 

School students will spend their time supporting 

local Amersham businesses, through dining 

at the Artichoke, The Beech House and Pizza 

Express. Many students - like myself - were 

unable to experience the thrills of music festivals 

last year, and have already purchased their 

Pennfest tickets (the lineup looks great!) for this 

year in July. 

I hope that whatever you decide to do, your 

summer is able to be made your own, and lived 

without limits!

As someone who has applied to 

university this year, I can understand 

the whole process can be confusing. 

So, I asked the Year 12s from my school 

to send me their questions to answer. 

Which university should I choose? 

You should choose a university that teaches 

in a way that benefits you. For example, is it 

more lecture or seminar based? Information on 

the teaching styles is available on all university 

websites. Furthermore, when shortlisting 

universities, it’s advisable to have a secure choice 

which you think you’re likely to get the grades 

and is an aspirational choice. Location should 

also play a part in your selection: it’s very 

expensive to live in London rather than 

Manchester, for example. 

How do I apply? 

All UK applications are done via UCAS which 

your school will have their own link to. 

What kind of offers are there? 

The most common offers are conditional or 

unconditional. A conditional offer is where 

you can go to your chosen university as long as 

you meet the requirements and an unconditional 

is where you’re guaranteed a place at the 

university. In some cases you can also get a 

contextual offer if you meet certain criteria such 

as your home address; not all universities offer 

this, but you can check on their websites to see 

if you’re eligible. From these offers you should 

choose a firm and an insurance choice; your firm 

choice is the university you must go to if you 

meet their conditions. 

What is a student loan and how do I apply? 

All the information about student loans and how 

to apply are on the GOV.UK website Student 

finance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) as well as other 

useful websites such as Complete guide to

What things do I need to take to university? 

It’s important to check what your accommodation 

provides for you on their website. What to take

I’m worried about making friends 

A crucial thing to remember is that everyone 

is in the same boat when going to university; 

everyone is nervous about making friends so the 

most important thing to do is put yourself out 

there and speak to as many people as possible! 

Additionally, join Facebook groups for your 

university, course and accommodation can help 

with anxiety as you’ll have a few familiar faces 

when you join.

Dietary choices affect longevity 

and quality-of-life as well as global 

bio-diversity. 

A plant-based diet has recently seen exponential 

growth in the UK but many are wondering 

whether this is another ‘transient trend’. It is not. 

Shifting to a nutrient-rich diet with less or no 

meat and dairy products has been scientifically 

verified by Imperial College, as being the 

biggest difference one can make to reducing 

global climate change as well as boosting health 

and wellbeing. 

Meat and animal products have been a 

significant part of our diets but in the light of 

new evidence, indicating that the factoryfarming 

industry’s effects on bio-diversity, meat 

and animal product consumption needs to be 

reconsidered, reshaped and reduced.

Classified as a Group 1 carcinogen (equally 

cancer-causing as alcohol or smoking) by 

the World Health Organisation, processed 

meat also exposes you to faecal matter on animal 

carcass, increasing your exposure to diseases such 

as salmonella. A study (verified by The Vegan 

Society) of 12,000 people, shows that those on 

a plant-based diet are 32% less likely to die from 

UK’s biggest health-related killer: heart disease. 

The ancient belief ‘You need meat and milk for 

protein!’ has long been disproved. Soy milk 

contains similar amounts of protein to cow’s milk 

and less saturated fats. A study by the University 

of Sydney found that ‘if you choose to replace 

some or all of your dairy milk intake with soy 

milk for environmental reasons, you will not be 

nutritionally disadvantaged’. You could also 

splash some refreshing oat or coconut milk onto 

your breakfast cereal to enhance it with vitamins 

A, B12 and D as well as calcium. 

If every UK family removed meat from one meal 

a week, this would have the same extensive 

effect as taking 16 million cars off the road. 

There is a choice we can take to increase our 

life expectancy by eight years and being 

compassionate towards sentient animals. 

A plant-based diet is an alternative path, and 

it is up to you to take it.

Little Chalfont 

parish news 

Council elections, postponed from last year 

because of the pandemic, are being held on 

Thursday, 6 May 2021. 

These would normally have included elections 

for councillors for Little Chalfont Parish Council 

(LCPC) but, this year, there is no need. This is 

because the LCPC has nine councillors, and 

we have nine candidates, so they are all 

automatically elected. 

The parish of Little Chalfont is divided into 

three wards and each ward had the same 

number of nominees as there were vacancies. 

Four existing members of the council are 

joined by five newcomers. Details of all the 

parish councillors can be found on the council’s 

website www.littlechalfont-pc.gov.uk. We 

very much regret, however, that one of the 

existing councillors who is stepping down is

Meet South African-born Johanci Tyson, 

who has lived in the UK for over 20 years. 

She moved to Chalfont St Giles six years 

ago’ has a young family - and Labrador dog! 

In South Africa she grew up with the smell of 

linseed oil and turpentine at home as her dad 

was an artist. Art is in her genes, something 

she is passionate about and has an emotional 

connection with. She studied fine arts and 

settled in the UK where opportunities took 

her into a different direction and led to a 

successful career in luxury residential property 

management, working for Harrods for the 

much of her career. 

Lockdown resulted in Johanci reassessing her 

life priorities, which is why she is now pursuing 

her art full-time with a creative start-up. Being 

creative makes her happy. 

Her paintings are large, colourful and 

contemporary making a bold statement. 

Her most popular collection are large-scale 

abstract and textured paintings on canvas. 

These tend to be vibrant, expressive, textured 

and will liven up any interior space. She also 

creates monochrome lino prints, demonstrating 

her love of architecture, and she can recreate 

places that are special to her.

Bring your cash 

ISAs to life 

Millions of pounds still sit inside cash 

ISAs earning poor rates of return and 

this situation is unlikely to change in the 

foreseeable future. 

The question is, was it a mistake by investing in 

the first place? The answer in many cases is no. 

The reason is having the option to organise an 

ISA transfer, which is effectively moving the tax-free 

ISA value across to a product that might be more 

appropriate and with the potential for better returns. 

This can involve increasing the investment risk, 

however is does not necessarily mean moving 

from low to high risk. The most popular choice is 

for retirees to move cash ISAs across to an income 

portfolio and although this does mean introducing 

higher volatility, the income stream from a wellmanaged 

portfolio can be extremely consistent, 

currently delivering tax free monthly income 

between 3% and 4%. 

Alternatively, for those not requiring income, an 

option to invest into a risk graded model portfolio 

often provides an attractive solution using the 

following fund profiles: 

Cautious • Moderately Cautious • Balanced 

Moderately Adventurous • Adventurous 

What makes this opportunity even more viable 

follows the introduction of the new Personal 

Savings Allowance (PSA). This is the amount of 

interest which can be earned tax free and for a 

basic rate payer this amounts to £1,000 per annum. 

A deposit account can be seen as an extension to

Can I divorce my partner for unreasonable behaviour? 

On 25 June 2020, after decades of campaigning, the 

Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill became an 

Act of Parliament. This will bring a significant change, 

allowing couples to divorce without the need for one 

party to be blamed for the marriage breakdown. 

However, a note of caution - the ‘No Fault Divorce’ 

law will not come into effect until Autumn 2021, so 

couples wanting to divorce now still have to rely on 

the current system. 

Currently, a spouse can apply for a divorce where 

their marriage has irretrievably broken down, but has 

to prove one of five facts: 

1. Partner’s adultery 

2. Unreasonable Behaviour 

3. Two years’ separation by consent 

4. Five years’ separation 

5. Desertion 

The Office of National Statistics (publishing 

statistics in November 2020) revealed that in 2019, 

unreasonable behaviour was the most common 

reason for divorcing, with 49% of wives and 35% of 

husbands petitioning on this ground.

intolerable. The test is whether a “right-thinking 

person” would conclude that one party could not be 

expected to live with the other, taking into account 

circumstances and personalities. 

We recommend including examples that are as 

anodyne as possible, avoiding inflammatory topics 

such as the children. The divorce petition does 

not have an impact on financial matters, so typical 

examples are: 

• Not helping with household chores 

• Being uncommunicative, not showing any affection 

• Not spending time together 

• Irresponsibility with family finances 

We also advise clients to agree the examples 

of unreasonable behaviour before issuing the 

petition at Court – in order to avoid a situation 

where your spouse opposes the petition, which 

can be costly. 

Clearly therefore the introduction of No Fault Divorce 

is a very welcome positive change, so that the blame 

game is no longer an issue.

New community 

building in Chalfont 

St Peter 

You may have noticed a new building 

springing up right in the centre of 

Chalfont St Peter, and perhaps wondered 

what it is - or more importantly, what 

will happen there? Known as ‘The Hub’, 

this aims to be a centre for community 

activity and a new Home for Gold Hill 

Baptist Church - who are providing this 

new facility. 

The building itself includes a large auditorium 

/ community space on the ground floor, with 

adjoining hospitality area (foyer and kitchen), 

accessed via a welcoming reception. 

The mezzanine floor houses a number of 

community rooms. Right at the centre of the 

top floor is a multi-purpose activity hall, a range 

of differently sized community rooms and a 

terrace looking out on the village to the front, 

and an office area for the Gold Hill church 

team to the rear. 

Activities and services will serve all ages 

and stages of life - toddlers, children, young 

people, young adults, families right through 

to Seniors. Services to support people 

who are facing challenges (includingdebt 

recovery, food bank, mental health support) 

will continue and be strengthened. 

Community users will be welcomed to 

provide sports/dance activities, educational 

services, leisure/interest activities, health-related 

services, and much more. The partnership 

with local schools will continue and willmake 

available a better space for seasonal events 

such as Christmas concerts or days facilitating 

transfer from junior to senior school. 

Gold Hill already provides and welcomes 

a range of different activities and services 

for local residents, businesses and other 

organisations from their current base on 

Gold Hill East. The Hub will enable these 

to be expanded and extended, provide 

more suitable, accessible and modern 

accommodation and ensure that even more 

people in the area are able to flourish.

when they are open to see the facilities and 

understand the heart behind this venture.

Local residents 

group, launch proposal 

for Chalfont St Peter 

Activity Park 

A group of Chalfont St Peter residents 

have launched a new proposal for a family 

activity park in the village. 

Concerned about the lack of local free-to-use 

sports and leisure facilities, the Chalfonts Activity 

Park proposal is seeking funding for a “wheeled 

sports” park suitable for skates, BMX bikes, 

wheelchairs, scooters and skateboard riders of 

all ages and abilities. 

The group have formed a committee chaired 

by CSP resident Kenny Ross, himself a life-time 

boardrider. 

Kenny said: “Chalfont 

St Peter is one of the 

largest villages in 

England, yet there are 

no free to use facilities 

at all in this area. 

Other areas enjoy 

much better amenities 

and we think our 

community deserves 

the same. “If you play 

cricket or football, 

you’re catered for, 

but there is nothing 

suitable for those 

who don’t take part 

in team sports and

who genuinely need something different to do 

in their free time, and a skatepark would be a 

fantastic addition to our community.

“But we don’t just want a skatepark. If there is 

enough interest and funding, we’d like to see it 

include other features to become something that 

our whole community can enjoy, where families can 

gather and take part in a wider range of activities. 

“Our village is growing, attracting more 

families who need things to do. We also need 

to encourage more participation in sports and 

recreation, so people lead healthier lifestyles. 

Investment in facilities such as this will bring 

benefits for generations of families.” 

Kenny said the group spent several weeks 

reviewing potential locations for an activity park. 

“We consulted with other councils, skatepark 

builders and community groups and looked 

at all of the available sites in Chalfont St Peter 

considering location, environmental impact, 

noise considerations, accessibility, land 

ownership and community impact. 

“We feel that Cheena Meadow offers great 

potential as a site, but there is also a lot of 

support for Mill Meadow near the Community 

Centre, which would be a fantastic location. 

“This is a community project and we want 

everyone interested to be able to get involved, 

whether they support the concept, or have 

concerns about it,” Kenny said.

Bekonscot Model 

Village welcomes 

visitors once again 

The famous gates at Bekonscot Model 

Village and Railway re-opened on Monday 

12th April and will remain open 7 days a 

week until Sunday 12th December. 

We are delighted to be able to welcome 

visitors back to the village where some new 

models have appeared alongside the old 

favourites. The gardens are springing into life 

and promise to offer their usual spectacularly 

colourful backdrop. 

On opening we will be operating under 

strict guidelines which include regulation 

of numbers onsite, plenty of handwashing 

facilities and enhanced cleaning regimes. 

Our play area, education centre and 

additional play equipment will remain 

closed for the time being with the hope 

that we can start to open them up as 

restrictions are further lifted. The ride-on 

railway will be running as normal and the 

tearoom will continue to offer a takeaway 

service. 

In order to control the number of visitors 

on site, all tickets must be booked 

in advance online via our website
