Welcome to the May 2021 edition of The Eckington 

and Killamarsh Doorsteppa. 

It’s been a fantastic month locally. Much more is 

happening within the community, and we are proud 

to say the feedback we have received after last 

month’s re-launch has been overwhelming! 

There’s a bit of a difference in our Books section this 

month, as we focus on a local writer. Killamarsh 

resident Patricia Ayling has written a debut novel 

‘The Curse of Becton Manor’, based on her 

experiences staying in her grandmother’s house in 

Wiltshire. Check out the all the details on page 41. 

On page 7 we draw our attention towards local 

news from Eckington Parish who have been 

delighted to welcome people back recently, and 

Bethany Acey (the new PGA professional) at Birley 

Wood Golf Club is ready to give lessons for anyone 

wanting to brush up on their game. 

It’s been a crazy year for all of us, but have you seen 

someone you recognised and you weren’t certain 

because they were wearing a face mask? St Giles 

Church has the answer! Our Community section on 

page 29 will reveal more.

NEWS FROM ECKINGTON PARISH 

Since Easter we have been able to meet in person and what a joy that is! 

As I write this we are still not allowed to sing in church: we really hope we will be able to when we 

celebrate Pentecost on the 23rd of May. 

We invite you to join us at 9:30 on Sunday mornings in St Peter and St Paul’s in Eckington. If you decide 

to do so, please check out our website where you can register as the number of people in church is still 

limited under Covid rules. The services are also available on YouTube. 

Rev Andy’s podcast is broadcast every week, giving us another opportunity to listen to God’s message. 

Just want a quiet moment with God? St Peter and St Paul’s, Eckington is open for private prayer on 

Tuesday mornings between 10 and 12. Alternatively, you can also find a quiet moment at home to sit 

quietly and pray and listen to God. However and wherever you pray, be assured, God will be with you.

Halfway Litter Pickers 

A big thank you to everyone who has taken part in 

our Sunday morning litter picks over the last few 

weeks. 

We have seen an increase in people wanting to help 

every week since we started and we have managed 

to make a great improvement in a number of areas. 

The small wooded area and paths below Halfway 

Junior School are looking lovely. We have tackled 

the area around the school and also either side of 

the football pitch and the Streetfields area. 

Local children are getting involved which is 

wonderful and we hope this number increases over 

the weeks and months to come. 

We will put together regular updates in ‘The 

Doorsteppa’ so watch this space!! 

If you know of an area around Halfway that needs 

a ‘spring clean’ please get in touch and get 

involved if you have the time!

yourself though as this could lead to resentment later on. Sticking

Secret enemy! The truth regarding at least one situation is 

about to emerge and someone, who hasn’t been the support they

Special edition Chairman’s Choice Gin helps raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare 

Derbyshire Distillery have teamed up with the Chair of 

North East Derbyshire District Council to launch a special 

edition pink gin to help raise vital funds for Ashgate 

Hospicecare.

to produce this incredible special edition gin. It is sure to 

be a big hit with gin lovers and as a special edition – make 

sure you get your hands on a bottle before they run out!” 

Derbyshire Distillery was established in early 2018, using 

only the finest local and international ingredients. 

Demand has continued to grow across Derbyshire and 

the Peak District and beyond 

This collaboration with the Chair of the Council will see a 

cherry flavoured gin and glitter, it is sure to be a big hit 

amongst gin lovers and will be available for sale via the 

Derbyshire Distillery website, by visiting their premises in 

Markham Vale or from Chesterfield Football Club. 

The signature gin is one example of local businesses 

working together with the Chairman and every penny of 

profit from sales will go towards helping raise money to 

support Ashgate Hospicecare in the work they do to 

provide palliative care to patients and support they 

provide to many families in the district. 

“Of course, the main reason for producing this limited 

edition gin is to help support my charity this year in office 

– Ashgate Hospicecare. All profits from the sales of the 

gin will be donated to the charity. The work they do to 

help families in their tough and distressing times is 

incredible and I would like to do everything possible to 

help support them in continuing their fantastic work and 

care they provide”.

chance to perform at a Chesterfield Football Club match day!

encourage them to take part in the competition to help raise 

much needed funds for a charity but also showcase their 

own amazing abilities.” 

All talents are welcome, from singers, musicians and dancers, 

to magicians and balloon modellers. Anything goes but 

it must be family friendly! The contest is open to anyone in 

north Derbyshire, including Chesterfield but you must be 18 

years old or over. 

If you would like to take part, please upload a video of your 

performance to social media and use the hashtag 

Entry fees: For acts containing one-three people, the cost is 

£5. For acts with four or more people, the cost is £10. This 

must be paid for through the Chair’s donation page

submission. If your act/group has a name, please also

A panel will judge the competition, with the winner

Participants will be required to take part in publicity. 

Submitted videos may be used in publicity for the event and 

the winning entry will be shared with local media and 

council communication channels.

23 HISTORY 

As we start to enjoy Spring with its promise of 

better things to come, this month we look at 

the history of the Maypole. 

You have probably seen a Maypole dance at 

some point or other. In fact it would appear 

that Killamarsh has always embraced the 

Maypole and you may have seen one at an 

event in the past. Back in the days of the 

Summer Fete which was held at the old 

Rectory every year, there was usually a Maypole 

with children from St Giles School, in fact 

you may have taken part in one. 

Maypole dancing is a tradition of May Day. It is 

believed to have started in Roman Britain 

around 2,000 years ago when soldiers celebrated 

the arrival of Spring by dancing around 

decorated trees thanking their goddess Flora. 

These days a Maypole is a painted pole which 

is decorated with flowers, round which people 

traditionally dance on Mayday holding long 

ribbons that are attached to the top of the 

pole. Dancing around a Maypole involves a 

group of people taking a coloured ribbon 

attached to it and weaving around each other, 

often to music. 

A Maypole should be 3.5m tall and should be 

at least 40 mm in diameter. The top of the 

Maypole needs a crown on which to attach the 

ribbons and there should be 6 – 8 ribbons on a 

Maypole. 

A Maypole at Killamarsh Gala in the 1920s 

Maypole dancing is a form of folk dance from 

England, Germany and Sweden. Historians 

believe the first Maypole dance originated as 

part of pagan fertility rituals. Originally the 

dances danced around a living tree. 

In the second half of the 20th Century, the rite 

of the Maypole remained a rite of celebration 

of Spring. 

Maypole dances have been viewed as 

scandalous at various points throughout 

history, largely in the 18th and 19th centuries, 

and were even banned in 1644 by British 

Parliament, described by “Puritan 

Moses” Oliver Cromwell as “a heathenish 

vanity, generally abused to superstition and 

wickedness.” 

But today, May Day revellers are free to 

practice the tradition anywhere they please.

29 COMMUNITY 

During the last year, have you seen someone you 

thought you recognised but were not certain, as 

they were wearing a face mask? Or seen someone 

wearing a mask and thought “I like that. I wonder 

where they’ve got it from?” 

Who’s behind the masks? St Giles Church in 

Killamarsh has an answer. 

Christine Tilbrook and her daughter Julie managed 

St Giles Charity Shop until it was forced to close in 

March 2020 due to Government regulations 

introduced to combat the coronavirus outbreak. 

Julie had the idea that wearing face masks could 

become compulsory in shops. She saw some 

brightly coloured masks online and thought she 

could make some and perhaps sell a few for 

charity. As she and her mother had been involved 

with St Giles Church Charity Shop, they agreed that 

any sales revenue would go to the shop. 

Having found a pattern online, work started in 

June 2020 on the triple layered 100% cotton masks 

in a range of sizes for adults and children. These 

soon grew in popularity, initially being sold to a 

few friends and neighbours but quickly to a much 

wider circle of customers. As word spread, 

enquiries started to come in for customised 

patterned masks. One example was from the 

mother of a teenage boy in hospital who asked for 

masks in Harry Potter fabric to match his bedding. 

Julie and Christine were happy to oblige and were 

delighted to learn that he was much happier than 

wearing standard hospital issue masks. Requests 

also came in for special masks for special 

occasions, so masks were produced with beads or 

sequins sown on and in specially chosen patterned 

fabrics. A Christmas collection proved very popular. 

Christine and Julie originally hoped they might be 

able to raise £50 for the Charity Shop but, by 

the end of March 2021 they had raised the 

tremendous sum of £2,250! During this time they 

have worn out 1 sewing machine, 1 iron and an 

i-Pad. Orders have been sent all over the UK and 

even overseas. 

Revd Canon Helen Guest, the Rector of Killamarsh, 

said their hard work in support of St Giles Church 

was magnificent and greatly appreciated and, as a 

customer herself, knew how well the masks had 

been received. Christine and Julie have already 

been asking when the Charity Shop will reopen – 

perhaps they are looking for a well-earned respite 

from making masks.

Patricia’s first novel ‘The Curse of Becton 

Manor’ is based on historical facts but has a 

supernatural edge. It was inspired by her 

grandmother’s haunted house in Wiltshire 

and her interest in the Elizabethan era. A dual 

era tale, it opens with Tom, aged 15 

reluctantly moving into an Elizabethan manor 

with his family. Mysterious events lead him to 

investigate the almost 400 year history with 

dark results and revelations of a period 

fraught with religious strife and persecution 

for those deemed as practising witchcraft:-

Patricia Ayling, now living in Killamarsh, was 

born in the 1950s so, in her words, a 

latecomer; that is, for fiction anyway. Patricia 

has published four health related textbooks 

while she was an examiner/verifier for the 

awarding body Edexcel. 

After leaving school and working in libraries, 

she had several jobs while living in Canada, 

but returned to study nursing at St. Mary’s 

Hospital in Paddington. Following many years 

as a neurosurgical nurse, she turned to 

teaching and writing, then running her own 

training business. 

She and husband Len have five children, nine 

grandchildren and one Labrador. After nine 

years living part time in Cyprus, they are back 

in England permanently.

45 LOCAL CHRONICLE 

Killamarsh Conservation Group report on their 

latest project - Bridge Street Wildflowers. 

Killamarsh Conservation Group's latest project has 

been completed in just 2 weeks from start to finish. 

Thanks to a grant from the Community Leadership 

Scheme under the guidance of County Cllr Diane 

Charles, the group has purchased seeded wildflower 

turves from Pictorial Meadows of Rotherham and 

following consultation with and approval from 

Killamarsh Parish Council laid them in the small 

fenced-off area of the Linear Park at the corner of 

Bridge Street and Kirkcroft Lane. 

The group spent several days removing a top covering 

of thickly matted grass and weeds from the space 

before applying a layer of topsoil to give the turves a 

growing medium on which to sit. On the day of laying 

the soil was thoroughly watered before the turves 

were put down. The 26sq m of turf were carefully 

positioned so as not to permit invasion of other species 

within the carpet of wildflowers. Any off-cuts of 

turf were used to fill gaps. Once all the turf was down, 

the area was again thoroughly watered to give the 

seedlings the best possible start. 

The meadow will require minimum maintenance – 

seed heads and stalks will be left through the winter 

to provide a habitat for insects, birds and small 

animals. As growth will restart in the spring a “cut and 

collect” operation will encourage the new flowers. 

The seeded turves were chosen in favour of sowing 

seeds because we should see growth in the first summer, 

so for anyone passing the “meadow” in the next 

few weeks – prepare to be wowed!!

the pharmacy from Lee Rowley, Member of 

Parliament for North East Derbyshire. 

Amit is married and has a lovely daughter. 

Outside of his working life his interests are 

keeping fit & healthy, reading medical journals, 

watching TV and spending time with his family. 

Since that time he and his staff have provided a 

wonderful service to the village but also Amit 

has shown a great interest in what is happening 

within the local community and with the 

residents and is always happy to help and 

support. 

Amit has more than 20 years of work 

experience in the Pharmacy sector and has 

recently qualified as a Pharmacist Independent 

Prescriber. 

During the first lock down, Amit and his team 

were nominated for Harry’s Heroes Awards and
