Welcome to the May 2021 edition of The 

Barlborough, Clowne & Renishaw Doorsteppa. 

It’s been a fantastic month locally. Much more is 

happening within the community, and we are proud 

to say the feedback we have received after last 

month’s re-launch has been overwhelming! 

There’s a bit of a difference in our Books section this 

month, as we focus on a local writer. Killamarsh 

resident Patricia Ayling has written a debut novel 

‘The Curse of Becton Manor’, based on her 

experiences staying in her grandmother’s house in 

Wiltshire. Check out the all the details on page 27. 

On page 15 we draw our attention towards local 

news from Eckington Parish who have been 

delighted to welcome people back recently, and 

Bethany Acey (the new PGA professional) at Birley 

Wood Golf Club is ready to give lessons for anyone 

wanting to brush up on their game. 

It’s been a crazy year for all of us, but have you seen 

someone you recognised and you weren’t certain 

because they were wearing a face mask? St Giles 

Church has the answer! Our Community section on 

page 43 will reveal more.

Special edition Chairman’s Choice Gin helps raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare 

Derbyshire Distillery have teamed up with the Chair of 

North East Derbyshire District Council to launch a special 

edition pink gin to help raise vital funds for Ashgate 

Hospicecare. 

fantastic experience working with Derbyshire Distillery 

to produce this incredible special edition gin. It is sure to 

be a big hit with gin lovers and as a special edition – make 

sure you get your hands on a bottle before they run out!” 

Derbyshire Distillery was established in early 2018, using 

only the finest local and international ingredients. 

Demand has continued to grow across Derbyshire and 

the Peak District and beyond 

This collaboration with the Chair of the Council will see a 

cherry flavoured gin and glitter, it is sure to be a big hit 

amongst gin lovers and will be available for sale via the 

Derbyshire Distillery website, by visiting their premises in 

Markham Vale or from Chesterfield Football Club. 

The signature gin is one example of local businesses 

working together with the Chairman and every penny of 

profit from sales will go towards helping raise money to 

support Ashgate Hospicecare in the work they do to 

provide palliative care to patients and support they 

provide to many families in the district. 

“Of course, the main reason for producing this limited 

edition gin is to help support my charity this year in office 

– Ashgate Hospicecare. All profits from the sales of the 

gin will be donated to the charity. The work they do to 

help families in their tough and distressing times is 

incredible and I would like to do everything possible to 

help support them in continuing their fantastic work and 

care they provide”.

chance to perform at a Chesterfield Football Club match day! 

Cllr Martin Thacker MBE, Chair of North East Derbyshire 

District Council, said: “I know we have a great many talented 

individuals and groups across north Derbyshire so I 

encourage them to take part in the competition to help raise 

much needed funds for a charity but also showcase their 

own amazing abilities.” 

All talents are welcome, from singers, musicians and dancers, 

to magicians and balloon modellers. Anything goes but 

it must be family friendly! The contest is open to anyone in 

north Derbyshire, including Chesterfield but you must be 18 

years old or over. 

If you would like to take part, please upload a video of your 

performance to social media and use the hashtag 

Entry fees: For acts containing one-three people, the cost is 

£5. For acts with four or more people, the cost is £10. This 

must be paid for through the Chair’s donation page

provide your name and share your posted video link in the 

details so this can be matched up with your video 

submission. If your act/group has a name, please also 

include that too. 

A panel will judge the competition, with the winner 

announced by 15th September 2021. There will be one

chance to perform at a Chesterfield Football Club match day. 

Participants will be required to take part in publicity. 

Submitted videos may be used in publicity for the event and 

the winning entry will be shared with local media and 

council communication channels.

Since Easter we have been able to meet in person and what a joy that is! 

As I write this we are still not allowed to sing in church: we really hope we will be able to when we 

celebrate Pentecost on the 23rd of May.

Congratulations to Janice Dyson from Wingerworth - winner of 

our Chair’s Pet Photo Competition. We asked residents to send 

in their funny pet pictures to raise money for our Chair’s chosen 

charities and be in with the chance of winning a prize. 

Janice sent us this picture of her adorable dog Finn playing in 

leaves to scoop a £50 Marks and Spencer gift voucher. Finn, an 

Irish stray adopted from Manchester Dogs Trust in 2019, is said, 

is said to be a ‘playful character’ with the photo capturing how 

much he enjoys life.

grandmother’s haunted house in Wiltshire 

and her interest in the Elizabethan era. A dual

with his family. Mysterious events lead him to 

investigate the almost 400 year history with 

dark results and revelations of a period 

fraught with religious strife and persecution 

for those deemed as practising witchcraft:-

Patricia Ayling, now living in Killamarsh, was 

born in the 1950s so, in her words, a

while she was an examiner/verifier for the 

awarding body Edexcel. 

After leaving school and working in libraries, 

she had several jobs while living in Canada, 

but returned to study nursing at St. Mary’s 

Hospital in Paddington. Following many years 

as a neurosurgical nurse, she turned to 

teaching and writing, then running her own 

training business. 

She and husband Len have five children, nine 

grandchildren and one Labrador. After nine 

years living part time in Cyprus, they are back 

in England permanently.

39 GARDENING 

Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a beautiful, tasty 

addition to the dinner table, and the garden. It has 

a great flavour, a long harvesting season and is 

nutritionally beneficial. A single portion provides 

half your daily requirement of carotenoids, plus 

high levels of folic acid and vitamins A and C. It's 

definitely a 'plan-ahead' crop though. If you start 

planting now you will give yourself something to 

look forward to next January, and as it is a 'cut and 

come again' crop, that long season should keep you 

going until April or May! 

Purple-sprouting broccoli is extremely hardy, 

tolerating temperatures as low as -12°C. You can 

actually start raising seeds in March, for even 

earlier crops. I usually start the new year with good 

intentions of staggering my planting like this 

(because it is one of my favourites veg), then forget 

and end up planting in April or May. 

One of the reasons I love it is that I garden on fairly 

alkaline soil, in which it thrives. It prefers a heavier 

soil than mine ideally but seems to do well enough 

in my garden. I dig in a fair amount of leaf mould 

and well-rotted manure to bulk it up. Purple 

sprouting broccoli doesn't like exposed sites, 

because the wind buffets the stems, so if your 

garden is more open it will need a bit of protection. 

Sow seeds into small pots or multi-cell trays, using 

a good quality multi-purpose seed and cuttings 

compost. When the little plants are large enough to 

handle, prick the seedlings out and transplant them 

into single 9cm pots. Watering them in well. 

Once the plants have matured, fork the soil over. 

Remove large stones and perennial weeds. Even if 

your soil is heavier it's worth digging in some organic 

matter to improve texture and moisture retention. 

I don't need to add lime to my soil but if you garden 

on neutral or acid soil, you'd be advised to 

work some in. Transplant when the broccoli plants 

are 7-9cm tall. Water them well before removing 

from their pots, and plant them 

50-60cm apart, with a similar distance between the 

rows. Brassicas dislike loose soil, so make sure you 

firm around the plants lightly with your foot. Water 

again after planting. Six plants will produce enough 

broccoli to feed a family of four. I grow more 

because I love it. 

Harvest when the flower shoots are well developed 

but before the flowers have actually opened. Cut 

the central spears with a sharp knife first, as this 

encourages the side shoots to develop quickly. 

Then crop the side shoots regularly to extend the 

cropping time. 

January seems a long way away right now, but a 

little planning and preparation will ensure that 

deliciousness will await when we get there.

During the last year, have you seen someone you 

thought you recognised but were not certain, as 

they were wearing a face mask? Or seen someone 

wearing a mask and thought “I like that. I wonder 

where they’ve got it from?” 

Who’s behind the masks? St Giles Church in 

Killamarsh has an answer. 

Christine Tilbrook and her daughter Julie managed 

St Giles Charity Shop until it was forced to close in 

March 2020 due to Government regulations 

introduced to combat the coronavirus outbreak. 

Julie had the idea that wearing face masks could 

become compulsory in shops. She saw some 

brightly coloured masks online and thought she 

could make some and perhaps sell a few for 

charity. As she and her mother had been involved 

with St Giles Church Charity Shop, they agreed that 

any sales revenue would go to the shop. 

Having found a pattern online, work started in 

June 2020 on the triple layered 100% cotton masks 

in a range of sizes for adults and children. These 

soon grew in popularity, initially being sold to a 

few friends and neighbours but quickly to a much 

wider circle of customers. As word spread, 

enquiries started to come in for customised 

patterned masks. One example was from the 

mother of a teenage boy in hospital who asked for 

masks in Harry Potter fabric to match his bedding. 

Julie and Christine were happy to oblige and were 

delighted to learn that he was much happier than 

wearing standard hospital issue masks. Requests 

also came in for special masks for special 

occasions, so masks were produced with beads or 

sequins sown on and in specially chosen patterned 

fabrics. A Christmas collection proved very popular. 

Christine and Julie originally hoped they might be 

able to raise £50 for the Charity Shop but, by 

the end of March 2021 they had raised the 

tremendous sum of £2,250! During this time they 

have worn out 1 sewing machine, 1 iron and an 

i-Pad. Orders have been sent all over the UK and 

even overseas. 

Revd Canon Helen Guest, the Rector of Killamarsh, 

said their hard work in support of St Giles Church 

was magnificent and greatly appreciated and, as a 

customer herself, knew how well the masks had 

been received. Christine and Julie have already 

been asking when the Charity Shop will reopen – 

perhaps they are looking for a well-earned respite 

from making masks.

45 RECIPE 

Preparation time: 10 min 

Cooking time: 1 hr 20 plus cooling 

Serves: 2-4 

Ingredients 

250g fresh egg lasagne sheets 

For the sauce 

1 tbsp olive oil 

1 onion, peeled and cut in half 

1 carrot, cut in half lengthways 

1 celery stick, cut in half 

800g tinned plum tomatoes 

1 small bunch basil 

Splash of balsamic vinegar 

For the filling 

250g fresh spinach 

1 tbsp butter 

1 small garlic clove, peeled and crushed 

175g fresh ricotta 

30g Italian hard cheese, grated 

Nutmeg 

Method 

Heat the olive oil in a wide pan over a medium heat, 

add the onion, carrot and celery, and fry for two 

minutes, until they start to brown. Add the tomatoes, 

basil, and balsamic vinegar, bring everything to a 

simmer, then turn down the heat and cook gently for 

about 30 minutes, until thick. Remove the vegetables 

and herbs, then blend the sauce until fairly smooth, and 

season to taste. 

While the sauce is cooking, trim and discard any tough 

stalks from the spinach and wash the leaves well. Put 

the still-wet spinach into a saucepan over a medium 

heat, cover and cook, shaking the pan occasionally, 

until the spinach is completely wilted, then run under 

cold water to stop the cooking process. Once it’s cool 

enough to handle, squeeze until dry, then chop finely. 

Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat, add 

the garlic, cook for one minute, then add the spinach. 

Sauté to coat everything with the butter, then remove 

from the heat and leave to cool. 

Heat the oven to 200C (180C fan) / gas mark 6. Mix the 

ricotta and spinach and add most of the grated cheese, 

reserving some for the top, season the mixture well 

with nutmeg and salt. 

Pour a thick layer of tomato sauce into the bottom of a 

medium baking tin. Make a sausage shape of filling on 

the short end of one of the pasta squares and roll it up, 

until you have slight overlap. Put the filled tube seam 

side down in the baking dish, then repeat with the 

remaining pasta and filling; pour the remaining sauce 

on top. Bake for 30 minutes. Scatter the remaining 

grated cheese over the dish before serving and place 

under the grill until it bubbles.
