No trespassing
they tell us
trespassers will be shot
(and raped, and maimed, and beaten,
and dehumanized)
Who am I
to question the systems
that shaped me
and gave me these gifts
of anxiety
and depression
and self-hatred
to break cycles
when I keep thinking that progress
is linear
to not remember that
internalized
is another word for buried
and the unearthing
of trauma
that I inherited
feels destructive
because I am
used to seeing myself as the serpent
but maybe I am the eagle too
