2021 marks our 50th Jubilee year and we have kicked off the celebrations in Term 1 with

a bang. In this special bumper edition newsletter you will see photos from our jubilee

events. Also featured is how our students have celebrated many achievements over

Term 1, including ASB Polyfest 2021. Our winter sports are about to begin, so keep an

eye out for our teams and we also have many exciting academic events happening this

term such as the South Auckland Mathematics Competitions. Enjoy reading.

MC Term 1 Newsletter - 1

A word from the Principal

This year we are celebrating our 50th year as a school. Students first attended

Māngere College in 1971 and the school has gone from strength to strength over

the following 50 years. We will be marking this special year with events in each

term which started with our Jubilee Pōwhiri and Meet & Greet event on 9 April.

It was great to meet so many past students and staff at these events including

some students and staff who started at the school in its very first year. If you

would like updates on other events through the year please register on our

website.

Term One this year was a long and busy term and despite the lockdown

disruptions at the start of the year there was so much to celebrate.

We started the year with the news that our NCEA results in 2020 were

our best ever. Our Level 1 pass rate was 86%, Level 2 was 90% and Level

3 was 64%. These are fantastic results for our school particularly with all

the disruption we had through the year in 2020. Students worked very

hard with the support of their teachers and all our senior students for

2020 should be congratulated on their fantastic results. These results

now set a benchmark that we aim to meet each year as we continue to

improve.

To finish off Term 1 we were very fortunate to see our students

displaying their talents in Polyfest. It has been three years since

we have seen a full Polyfest take place and our students did not

disappoint. All groups performed with pride and passion and it

was particularly pleasing to see our Cook Islands group win the top

overall prize.

a partnership with the Ministry

New Staff

wished Deputy Principal

Deb Ward all the best as she

begins her maternity leave.

We welcome all of our new staff who have

started at Māngere College this year.

It is exciting to note that two new staff

members are previous students from Māngere

College. Salome Wright began in Term 1 in

Learning Support and Pamata Toleafoa joined

us this term as Careers Admin Support.


50th Jubilee Pōwhiri

On Friday 9th April, we opened our 50th Jubilee

with a pōwhiri.

It was a truly momentous occasion complete

with a sign of blessing with a huge downpour of

rain right in the middle of the occasion. Thank

you to all who were part of the ceremony, the

pōwhiri organisers, our students who perfomed

the haka pōwhiri, our speakers, kaumatua,

honoured guests, and all alumni students and

staff who attended.

Thank you also to Romeo Fidow who filmed the

event on facebook live so our almuni overseas

and absent could watch.

A special acknowledgment to speakers Jake Ratu,

Toi Katipa, Martin Cooper, Principal Tom Webb

and Eddie Manukau.

MAU ACADEMY

Beginning in Term 1, a group of Year 12 and

13 students embarked on an exciting 7 week

journey with the Mau Academy.

Through discovering their 'Mau'/identity, this will

guide their design process as they design street

art, planter boxes and pavilions for Bader Drive

(outside school) and Elmdon St. Students will also

gain credits and build connections with Unitec

Pathways and Unitech.

compete regularly at De La Selle

College. The Debates teams - choose

support with your school work.

This year we have

heaps of new

members and have

had some upskilling in

photography.

Our MC Media students have done a great job

of photographing Polyfest and various sports

events while gaining great technical skills.

off their journey with

a special trip to the

Māngere Arts Centre to

This term, one of

our senior music

classes has had the

privilege of having

workshops with

Tony Laulu from

Digital Discipline.

These workshops

have been centered

around the topics of

mental health in the

area of social media,

cyber bullying and

internet addiction.

Students have

discussed important

topics of self-image

and self-worth

and have enjoyed

taking a deeper

look into how we

view ourselves and

where we place our

priorities in life.

One of our

songwriting groups

was commissioned

by Digital Discipline

(with support from

the Ministry for

Pacific Peoples)

to write a song

that would shine a

light on this topic,

with D’nadcyn

Matia, Pypher

Tohilima Franklin,

Lilly-Anne Ikiua,

Siobahn Mafileo

and Te Amorangi

Nuku taking up the

challenge. With the

song completed,

D’nadcyn, Pypher

and Siobahn headed

into the recording

studio with Kava

Bowl Media’s

Malachi Samuelu

to professionally

record the track. The

music video was

then filmed in the T1

school holidays, and

was released on 5th

May.

MEGASCHOOLS COMPETITION

In the Term 1 holidays two of our

dance crews headed over to the

Vodafone Events Centre to compete

at the annual Megaschools Hip

Hop Dance Competition. ‘Ma Galz’

Crew competed in the Mini-Crew

Division, and ‘MC Vibes’ competed

in the 9 Man Crew Division. The

Events Centre was packed full of

family, friends and supporters, and

our teams competed against strong

schools such as Manurewa High,

Avondale College and Mt Albert

Grammar. At the end of the night,

our crews were stoked to come away

with two placings; 2nd Overall for

Ma Galz Crew, and 3rd Overall for MC

Vibes. It was a fantastic experience

for our dancers not only to compete,

but to unify their team bond and

also gain inspiration from other

crews.

CREATIVE LOCKDOWN CHALLENGE

The challenge was to

create a music cover or

dance choreography to

the song “Sun Comes Up”

featured on our Māngere

College Performing Arts

Instagram.


1ST XV BOYS RUGBY

In April, our 1st XV rugby boys

played a friendly pre-season game

against the Māngere College Old

Boys with a win to the Old Boys.

It was a great opportunity for the

current and previous students to

connect and bond and the game

also tied into our 50th Jubilee

celebrations for the year.

The Māngere College 1st XV rugby team were

asked to perform a haka for Old Boy Ofa

Tu'ungafasi before his 100th game for the

Blues.

It was an honour for our 1st XV boys and Captain

Nathan Taufahema found the experience scary

with the large crowd but felt a great sense of

pride in what they had achieved as a group.

"We were shaking the whole time," he said.

"It made us feel proud wearing our uniform in

front of so many people.

"It gave us a sense of what it could be like to be

where Ofa is one day."

TRIP TO AMBURY FARM

Our Year 11 Science

students had a field trip

at Ambury Park during

Term 1.

The purpose of the

trip was to enhance

knowledge on animal

genetics and selective

breeding.

The students learnt the

differences between

breeds of sheep and

cattle and how to

recognise the dominant

characteristics and the

how these are passed to

their offspring.

The students also

acquired knowledge to

identify and distinguish

dairy and meat cattle.

Students were also

exposed to how to

identify cattle breeds

and to see how their

characteristics are

related to their uses and

the conditions they are

bred for.

Level 2 Geography students visiting Hunua Falls for an NCEA

assesment

This term our Year 13 Catering class completed

an NCEA assesment at Manukau Institute of

Technology. Well done to the whole class for

passing the assesment.

Red Cross fundraising

Well done to our Red Cross group who fundraised

last term and raised $155.00 to donate to Red

Cross.

World Vision Youth Conference

Caylis, Krizzia and Fatima from the Student Council

attended the World Vision Youth Conference on the

10th of May. They were all inspired to make change!

Watch out for the 40 Hour famine coming up soon.


Sports Leadership

Early in Term 2 the

Level 2 Sports Leaders

were working hard

organising and

preparing to officiate

and run an Athletics

event for our junior

students this term.

Unfortunately, the

lockdowns in Term 1

resulted in this event

being cancelled/

postponed. However,

the Sports Leaders

have done great to

keep focused and

maintain a positive

attitude towards their

learning in this course.

In the second half of

this Term 1, the Sports

Leaders were coaching/

teaching our year 9

students through

ABL team building

activities. The year 12’s

are building confidence

in their leadership and

received great feedback

on their performance

from coaching the year

9’s.

MĀNGERE ROTARY

CLUB DONATES TO

50TH JUBILEE

Māngere College would like to extend its

gratitude to the Rotary Club of Māngere for its

generous donation towards our 50th Jubilee

celebrations.

Because of the donation, we were able to drop

our price for our Meet & Greet event which made

it more accessible for our alumni to attend.

Rotary’s work addresses many of today’s

most critical issues - health, hunger, poverty,

the environment, education, and literacy to

name a few. Other programmes focus on the

development of young people with leadership

training and student exchanges.
