Swiss-European Mobility Programme
The mobility programme within the Swiss Programme to Erasmus+ designed for
the higher education level is called the Swiss-European Mobility Programme.
SEMP offers Swiss universities and colleges of higher education the opportunity
to sponsor students, lecturers and staff for stays abroad in one of 34 European
Erasmus+ Programme Countries (outgoing mobility). If students or higher education
institution staff come to Switzerland from abroad, they are also supported
by SEMP as ‘incomings’. This practice guarantees exchange based on reciprocity
between institutions of higher education.
The budget of CHF 18 million in the academic year 2019/20 makes SEMP the
leading national mobility programme. It is implemented by Movetia and
40 Swiss educational institutions. The legend on the fold-out page lists all
participating institutions. The following statistical information relates to
outgoing mobility. Where incoming figures are declared, this is noted accordingly.
Most educational institutions in Switzerland
and Europe switched to distance learning
in spring semester 2020. Thanks to rapidly
implemented measures that made it
possible to finish a semester or an internship
online, most students were able to continue
and complete their mobility semesters.
Mobilities that are continued online as
well as interrupted are taken into account
in the statistics.
student lasts on average 6 months and earns 35 ECTS, traineeships with an
average duration of 5 months give students their first work experience. All SEMP
students receive a financial grant of CHF 1’600/semester or CHF 440/month
of traineeship.
Staff mobility was and remains the most
affected by the current restrictions. Due to
the pandemic, many mobilities could
not take place as planned: 195 outgoing and
119 incoming mobilities were cancelled.
For staff, SEMP funding was only available
for physical mobilities (not for online
activities).
