A Message from our President, Josh Gordon
As this will be my last GATEWAYS article, I wanted to start with a thank you. Thank you
to each individual in the community for your support, for your action, for your
volunteerism, for your concern, and for your care for Shaarey Tikvah. I have learned
much. Gratefully, I think that I have grown in many ways as well. There are decisions
of which I am proud, and some that I wish were made differently. I can say without
reservation that they were all made with the best of intentions for the community as a
whole. We have tried to facilitate connection through virtual programming, streaming
services, zoom services, in-person worship, outdoor gatherings. We have made
cocktails, tasted chocolate, provided learning opportunities on a wide range of social
issues, learned from Jewish scholars from across this country, and have thus far led
the way to a return to in-person services.
And still, I know that the many challenges of these past two years have left many
feeling disconnected. I was recently inspired by the words of Rabbi David Wolpe who
pointed out that our history can be neatly summarized by a single word…. Return.
Throughout our history we return from plagues, from oppression, from exile. It is now
time to return. It is time to return to the warm embrace of each other’s company. It is
time to return to the healing power of prayer. It is time to return to the inspiration of
study. I recognize that process will look different for different people. Whether through
your computer screen, at an outdoor gathering, or in our holy sanctuary, please know
that the community will try to meet you wherever possible to try to return.
In service and peace,
Josh
HaZak Lunch brought some friends back together!
Special thanks to John Siff and Rabbi Roland for
organizing. Join us again June 24!
A Message from Martha Sivertson, Executive Director
Hello Sports Fans!
I was going to write about something more mundane this month but, in honor of Father’s Day and
because I had the pleasure of visiting the Cleveland Area Soap Box Derby (CASBD) grounds this past
weekend, I thought I’d let you know what is really on my mind.
For a few years now, I have thought about our CST driveway as having the perfect slope to have soap box
cars meander down. Well, it is not, but that’s okay because the perfect slope is still right here in Cleveland!
With a shot-in-the-dark e-mail through the CASBD website, Joe Mendise invited me to attend a
“rally” on a Saturday morning.
Of course, I missed the exit off of Route 2 going west but that led me on the back roads to Wendy Park
where 20-30 people were on various bird-watching walks. I saw a deerkill and a seagull myself but that
was not what I came for so, with a little re-working, I got back on Rte. 2, rounded my way through Gordon
Square, made at least one illegal turn and found the entrance. Had I taken the correct exit to begin with, I
would have been right there, no problem
Anyway, it was cold and windy with a threat of rain but that did not dampen
the spirits of the drivers and parents present. Joe was the perfect host,
showing me around the pits (though they do call them that) and giving me
some history. Kind of like Shaarey Tikvah starting above the Tasty Shop
Bakery, the CASBD started on some sloped streets in Cleveland neighborhoods.
It wasn’t until Mayor Michael White officially dedicated the land that
they got their home alongside the Westbound lane of the Shoreway on
Whiskey Island.
Participation in Soap Box competitions can get a little steep with car kits running from $300 to thousands
of dollars. Boys and girls are so into both the competition and the camaraderie though, that parents
seem to take it in stride. Joe, himself, has two daughters that aged out (18) of Soap Box but he maintains
a seat on the CASBD Board and his wife and daughters were running the schedules and minding the
track while I was there. A real Family Affair!
The CASBD has invited Shaarey Tikvah to attend a rally or competition anytime. However, the better
suggestion from Joe was to make a CST Family Day out of it. The CASBD is always looking for more drivers
and even has cars our kids can try out. Stay tuned for a fun summer Sunday afternoon soon.
A Message from Rabbi Scott Roland
Dear Friends,
With Shavuot behind us and a taste of the first hot days of the season, it is only a matter of time
before we start focusing on the work of the High Holy Day season. But first, SUMMER! In the UK,
summer break is referred to as “The Long Vacation.” Following suit, Israeli’s have “The Big
Vacation,” or Ha-hofesh Ha-gadol. As a brief aside, I’ve read that some parents refer to summer
break as, Ha-onesh Ha-gadol, or “The Big Punishment” as they struggle with the responsibility of filling
all of their children’s time in absence of school.
However, I think there is much more to learn from
Ha-hofesh Ha-gadol. At its root, het/peh/shin
means freedom or liberty. As summer begins,
whether real or perceived, there is a sense of
freedom. Perhaps it means the freedom to
transform ourselves as the spring has transformed
the world around us. The sudden abundance of
daylight hours gives us the sense of having more
time. In my family, that means leisurely dinners on
the back patio, camping adventures, and patiently
waiting for our garden to grow.
What would it mean to give greater intention to this free feeling? This question seems more relevant
as we slowly creep back toward “normal” at this point in the pandemic. What if we take pause
before jumping back into our old routines and allow ourselves to imagine living in alignment with the
priorities of our hearts and souls? I am reminded of the words of Psalm 16, “Teach me the path of
life. In Your presence is perfect joy; delights are ever in Your right hand.”
Not at all etymologically related to hofesh is the root het/peh/sin. By moving one little dot over the
last letter of the root, freedom takes on the meaning of seeking or disguising. I have long considered
that a meaningful spiritual life is a bit of a game of hide and seek with the Holy One. This image not
only delights me as I imagine a playful God, but also brings me back to games of flashlight tag with
neighborhood friends on summer nights. We can find so much joy when it feels like time is on our
side.
I wish you a summer of long days and peaceful nights. I pray that you embrace the sense of freedom
and use your time wisely. I hope that you find what it is that you are seeking. Who knows? Maybe I’ll
even find you in shul!?
With much love and blessing,
Rabbi Scott B. Roland
A Message from Rabbi Rachel Brown, Director of Congregational Learning
Summer is just about upon us! In my mind, summer is the time for a sabbatical of sorts. The Torah tells
us what is supposed to happen during a sabbatical. The sabbatical that comes once a week – Shabbat
– invites us to rest, to pray, to study, to eat well, and to be with people we love. The sabbatical that
comes once every seven years – shmita – is a sabbatical for the land. It is a time for the land to have a
break from intense farming. By extension, it is a time for farmers to take a break from tilling, planting
and sowing, weeding, and harvesting – in other words, a break from intense farming.
It is easy to imagine that the break that is a sabbatical is a time of dormancy – on the surface, nothing
is happening. But as a Jewish educator who has taught in classrooms during the school-year and at
summer camp, I can tell you that during break time is when a lot of intense learning happens. By
taking a break from figuring out how to get through the day – how to finish a task, or pass a test, or
squeeze all the chores in after working all day – there is time to ruminate, to wonder, to daydream, to
just be. During those times one can learn, or be reminded about their own true essence, or figure out
what is really important to live a satisfying life, or even simply find out what it’s like to feel rested.
I hope that you are able to take some time this summer to rest, to take a break, to have some sort of
sabbatical from the stress of this past year, to learn something new about yourself. And I look forward
to being together again (hopefully in person) later this summer – to learn and to celebrate together
again.
Special Thanks to all who organized and attended this year’s Shabbaton
