SUCCESS: Burnside High School won the top spot at Canterbury’s Showquest competition with a piece about the
negative effects of fast fashion.
Burnside takes Showquest
BURNSIDE HIGH School is
Showquest’s newest regional
champion after a strong message
of fast fashion’s detrimental
impact on the environment
struck a chord with the judges.
The town hall was a buzz of
activity last week when teams
from Canterbury schools
competed for a spot at New
Zealand’s biggest performing
arts competition for schools.
Burnside team student captain
Simone Blackie said they
picked their theme because it
was relevant to everyone in the
audience.
“In our piece, we contrasted
our world versus the world of the
workers who are manufacturing
our clothing,” she said
“We did not expect to win. We
didn’t even think we were going
to place. It feels amazing. It feels
unreal.”
Regional competitions are
under way until July 6. Teams
are judged on their overall
production, performance,
movement and theme.
Rockquest Promotions general
manager Matt Ealand said the
regional Showquest competition
had again shown how talented
young people were.
“We are extremely grateful
to be back with live events
this year and yet again we are
amazed by the high quality of
performances,” he said.
“The leadership and teamwork
required ... are immense and
these school teams have done an
incredible job.”
THE WEATHER forecast for two
weeks’ time has confirmed that
it’s going to be cloudy – with a
chance of golf balls.
St Patrick’s School in Bryndwr
is taking a fresh approach to its
fundraising efforts by making it
rain golf balls at the Riccarton
Park Golf Complex on June 11.
Dubbed “Helicopter Hole in
Won”, the plan is for the school
to sell hundreds of uniquely
numbered golf balls. These will
be loaded into a helicopter and
dropped onto the golf course.
Whoever’s ball is the first to
achieve a hole in one, or the closest
to one, will win $1000 cash.
Jo McKenzie, the school’s
Parents and Friends Association
chairwoman, said the novelty and
simplicity factor appealed.
Having hosted golf tournaments
in the past, the school was
no stranger to the sport, but it
was time for a change.
“We were looking for something
fresh that would bring the
school and wider community
together,” said McKenzie.
“We’ve hosted golf tournaments
and charity balls before but it was
time for a change.
“The response from the school
and the community so far has
been fantastic.”
The community has until tomorrow
to buy a golf ball and be
in to win $1000.
Buyers’ names and contact
details will be recorded next to a
number that corresponds with a
particular ball.
Proceeds from the fundraiser
will support the school’s ambassador
programme and junior
gymnastics programme. These
encourage leadership opportunities
and help with technology
equipment for pupils.
Spectators can tuck into a barbecue
lunch from 12.30pm. The
helicopter arrives at 2.15pm.
