Derek’s daily visit to hot pools
a way to relax and meet friends
GOING FOR a soak in the
seaside hot pools at New
Brighton has almost become a
daily relaxation ritual for retiree
Derek Lowe.
The 84-year-old visited He
Puna Taimoana hot pools for
the first time shortly after they
opened in late May last year and
enjoyed the experience so much
that he immediately bought a
30-day pass.
Twelve months on and he’s
one of the hot pools most
frequent guests, visiting most
weekdays for a relaxing soak and
a friendly natter with staff and
other guests.
“I find it very relaxing,’’ says
Lowe.
On most of his He Puna
Taimoana visits the St Martins
resident takes a book with him.
He has a favourite corner in the
hottest pool where he likes to sit
and read for 30 to 40 minutes
before he goes into the sauna.
After about 10 minutes in the
sauna, he cools himself off by
jumping in the cold plunge pool
before going for a quick swim.
It’s therapeutic for the body,
Lowe believes, but the physical
benefits that he gains are only
part of the reason that he keeps
coming back.
Lowe says he has formed new
friendships – and rediscovered old
ones – through his regular visits to
the hot pools.
“I used to live on Banks Peninsula
and I’ve met people at the
pools who I used to know from
there and it’s been lovely to catchup
with them. I’m also meeting
new people all the time – you get
chatting away and meet all sorts of
interesting people.’’
In the year since He Puna Taimoana
opened, it has welcomed
about 120,000 people.
He Puna Taiamoana manager
Merryn Skipper says that like
Lowe, many of the regular guests
strike-up friendships with other
pool users.
“They often meet each other
while relaxing in the pools or the
sauna and end up socialising outside
the facility too,’’ Skipper said.
“We really enjoy seeing strong
community connections being
forged between our guests because
connecting socially is so important
for people’s wellness, particularly
in the challenging times we’ve
been living through because of
PEGASUS POST
St Faith’s - the
tradition continues
The historic stone church where
thousands of sermons and weddings have
taken place over the past 96 years is a
pillar of the New Brighton community.
The artwork and beauty of the old stone
church holds an endearing spot in the
hearts of families far and wide. A place
where people gather to learn, grow, and
create lasting friendships. A place where
people develop their Christian faith.
Now one of the few remaining ‘Early
English Gothic style’ churches, St Faith’s
will be a Hawke St land-mark, and the
increasing visitors to New Brighton will
have a new attraction, able to admire
the fantastic stained glass windows and
beautiful interior via a newly created
Visitor Centre.
St Faith’s is unique for Christchurch
as part of history and a big part of New
Brighton’s future.
As the coastal suburb’s population was
swelled in the early 1900’s at weekends
by city dwellers spending time-out and
having ‘fun’ in New Brighton, many felt
the need to attend Sunday service and the
Bill Boddington
takes some
pews to the
Menz Shed for
restoring or
repurposing
existing old building was no longer up to
it.
The Port Hills stone church was
constructed in 1925 to replace the 1886
wooden one built on land donated by
James Hawkes. There is still an original
ornate window and internal door in the
current community hall (old Sunday
School erected in 1945) from that church,
known in its day as the Beach Church.
The church restoration and earthquake
strengthening is getting under way.
The goal is to remain a pillar of the
community as a place to meet, worship,
serve, learn, and support each other.
The church leaders are excited for the
newfound extension of life for the church
which means so much to so many. The
approved design is underway as well and
continued fundraising efforts for their
auxiliary building including kitchen
facilities and a toilet area.
“We are delighted by the response so
many people had when we sold the pews
last month,” says Katrina Hill, Vicar.
“People wanted a piece of history to hang
onto and to share with future generations.
St Faith’s wants to share how much we
appreciate the New Brighton community.
Including St Andrew’s who we were able
to help at a time when they needed it,
and who are now reciprocating with their
donation.”
St Faith’s and its Te Waka Aroha
community programmes have been
home to an Artisan Shed, Men’s Shed, a
community fridge and veggie co-op, craft
groups and many other classes, activities,
and events.
“As we move forward into the coming
year and decade, St Faith’s desires to carry
on our traditions of peace, love, worship
and friendship.” Rev Katrina says with an
endearing smile.
Coastal New Brighton
Timebank off to a strong start
Covid isolation opened the doors
for new ideas to spring forth,
one of those being the Coastal
New Brighton Timebank. Once
the “all clear” was announced by
the government to interact and
move about, the Coastal New
Brighton Timebank which was
the brainchild of Samantha Fay,
was born.
“When I was reconnecting with many
of my neighbours, they said how they
had missed sharing, caring, and teaching
during lockdown. I had previously heard
about the Timebank idea and thought it
would add value to our community and
thought one should be started here. That
is how it came about, and it has been
warmly embraced by our community and
an instant success,” Samantha said.
What is a Timebank?
A Time Bank is a community system
where a person who volunteers one hour
of their time helping someone else gains
an hour time credit. They can then use
that time credit or their accrued time
credits to receive help from someone else.
Everyone’s time is equal no matter
what each hour is spent doing!
1 hour of help = 1 time hour.
What is the benefit of
getting involved in a time
bank?
It creates an opportunity to get
to know your neighbourhood.
This happens through friendly
exchanges between community members
and creates a way for stronger, interactive,
and safer communities.
Most of us enjoy helping our
neighbours from time to time. However,
knowing who could use our help, or
where to direct our skills is difficult. A
Timebank can be the organisational piece
to put people together.
There is someone who enjoys and does
not mind doing a task or activity which
another person may be procrastinating to
do or struggling with accomplishing or
feeling overwhelmed and another person
can step in and help and assist with the
task.
The opportunity is created for someone
to help to get the tasks you struggle with
(or just do not like!) done. Everyone has
a list of day to day chores some which
include tasks we prefer more than others.
Each person has different preferences.
A Timebank offers the opportunity to
Sarah McKay,
Timebank
Coordinator
get out and meet some new people, where
you can do the jobs you prefer, and you
can get someone else to do the chores you
like the least.
Life can be tough and sometimes you
just need a hand. A Timebank can put you
in touch with people who enjoy or find
easy your difficult tasks.
“Our community is awesome and has
totally embraced this opportunity, which
was the result of a response to Covid. So
many people had lost their jobs or were
feeling low that getting involved with
helping another person offered a sense of
worthiness and hope and friendship.”
Check out their Facebook Page Coastal
New Brighton Time Bank. Or feel free
to stop by every Monday from 10-2 at
105 Brighton Mall, in the New Brighton
Project Office and talk with Sarah McKay,
the Timebank Coordinator. She talks
about how the Timebank works, the
processes and tasks people are looking to
swap time for.
The Timebank idea brings back a
system used for generations where people
share their skills for time, knowledge and
along the way friendships are created.
thanks to the expertise of City Care who
have taken on the building contract
guided by South by Southeast architects.
The club is amazed with the progress
that has been made so far, all being done
with volunteer hours. The rebuild has had
tremendous support in their fundraising
efforts from the community, builders, and
the local government.
The intrinsically designed structure
will have several rooms which will house
community events. The new build is
designed to allow people to sit under
shelter and watch the sea, as well as
to host classes, weddings, and other
functions.
65 more homes for
Central New Brighton
Brighton school site will be built in
stages, with architecture reflecting the
local environment and people-friendly
design.
Established Christchurch developer
Grant MacKinnon, of DGM Group, was
selected to lead the development.
PEGASUS POST
Pick up some pork and
try something different
Pork is often
considered a treat,
but there are many
ways to present this
versatile meat
Sirloin roast pork
with stuffed baked
apples
Ingredients
Serves 3-4
500g trim pork sirloin
roast or mini roast
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
4 small apples
3/4 cup fresh breadcrumbs
2 tbsp finely chopped sage
leaves
1 shallot, diced
1tsp crushed garlic
2 tbsp table spread
Directions
Preheat oven to 200 deg C.
If using a traditional
roast, brush it with oil
then season with salt and
pepper.
Core apples with an apple
corer. Using tip of a sharp
knife, cut through skin
around the circumference
of each apple.
Combine breadcrumbs,
sage, garlic, salt, pepper and
shallot. Mix in 1 tablespoon
of spread. Stuff apples with
this mixture.
Dot tops with remaining
tablespread.
Place in a roasting pan
with pork. Cook roast
for 35min according to
packet instructions. Cook
traditional roast for 10
minutes at 200 deg C.
Reduce heat to 160 deg C,
and continue cooking for
35-40min.
Cover and rest roast for
10min before carving.
Remove apples once soft
and cooked. Keep warm.
Great served with a kumara
mash and steamed green
beans.
Pork sirloin and stuffed apples are a good
combination for the dinner table.
Mustard and
Ingredients
500gm pork steaks
1 tbsp wholegrain
¼ cup pomegranate glaze
1 tsp Chinese five-spice
Directions
Cut steaks into four portions.
Combine mustard,
pomegranate glaze and five
spice.
Brush over cutlets. Cover
and refrigerate for 30min.
Preheat a barbecue or grill.
Remove steaks from fridge,
scraping off any excess
marinade. Grill on mediumhigh
for about 8-10 minutes
depending on thickness,
turning often.
Brush with reserved glaze
near the end of cooking.
Great served with risotto or
creamy polenta.
Schnitzel with Asian
flavours
Serves 4
Ingredients
300-400gm pork schnitzel
½ cup flour
Flaky sea salt and freshly
ground black pepper to
taste
1 large egg
2 tbsp coconut milk or
plain milk
1 cup dried breadcrumbs
3 kaffir lime leaves,
deveined and finely
chopped
2 tbsp each: chopped
coriander leaves, mint
2-3 tbsp rice bran oil
Directions
If necessary, pound
schnitzels with a rolling pin
until thin.
Combine flour, salt and
pepper in a shallow dish.
Whisk egg and coconut
milk or milk in another
shallow bowl.
Place breadcrumbs, kaffir
lime leaves and chopped
herbs in a third shallow
dish.
Coat schnitzels with flour,
dip in beaten egg, then coat
with crumb mixture. Chill
for 5min.
Heat oil in a large,
non-stick frying pan on
medium.
Add schnitzels. Cook
for 1-2 minutes each
side, until golden. Serve
immediately.
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air we breathe affects
our health and ability to perform. We
breathe in and out approximately 20,000
litres of air every day. It is therefore very
important to ensure good air quality
indoors through adequate ventilation.
Ventilation is the process of air exchange
to provide the necessary air quality that
meets the needs of the occupants for clean,
fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon
dioxide causes stuffiness in the room
and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible
harmful substances like a high content
of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful
and can cause various diseases. Even bad
smells can cause discomfort or irritate the
nervous system.
In summer, it’s easy to open windows
for cross ventilation, however as winter
approaches, we start to shut up out houses
to trap in the heat and as a
result, air quality can decline.
Ventilation includes both
the exchange of air to the
outside as well as circulation
of air within the building. It
is one of the most important
factors for maintaining
acceptable indoor air quality
in buildings. Filtered air
supply for summer and
filtered and warmed air in
winter creates a healthy
environment in which to live
and work. In cases with poor
or insufficient air intake from
outside, the oxygen content decreases,
humidity and dustiness levels increase. If
exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is
not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity
and harmful substances are not removed.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required air exchange for
your building requirement. Smooth-
Air offers a wide range of ventilation
equipment, from air vents to ducting
for fans, for both the commercial and
domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans
and ventilation components in-store but
they can also provide innovative solutions
tailored to differing requirements.
NEW RELEASES
Churchill & Son
by Josh Ireland
A moving and revealing new portrait of Winston Churchill through the most important
relationship in his life - that with his son, Randolph.
Few fathers and sons can ever have been so close as Winston Churchill and his only
son Randolph. Both showed flamboyant impatience, reckless bravery, and generosity
of spirit. The glorious and handsome Randolph was a giver and devourer of pleasure,
a man who exploded into rooms, trailing whisky tumblers and reciting verbatim whole
passages of classic literature. But while Randolph inherited many of his fathers’ talents,
he also inherited all of his flaws. Randolph was his father only more so: fiercer, louder,
more out of control. Hence father and son would be so very close, and so liable to
explode at each other. As much as he idolised Winston and never lost faith in his father
during the long, solitary years of Winston’s decline, he was never able to escape from
the shadow cast by Britain’s great hero. The world, big as it was, only had space for one
Churchill. Instead of the glory he believed was his birthright, Randolph died young, his
body rotted by resentment and drink, before he could complete his father’s biography.
Billie Eilish
by Billie eilish
Billie Eilish is a phenomenon. With distinctive visual flare and darkly poignant lyrics
that are unparalleled among music icons of the 21st century, Billie is a musician
who stands out from the crowd.
Between her record-shattering award-winning music and her uncompromising and
unapologetic attitude, it’s no surprise that her fanbase continues to grow by millions
month after month. She is that rare combination of wildly popular and highly respected
for her prodigious talent, a once in a generation superstar.
Now in this stunning visual narrative journey through her life, she is ready to share
more with her devoted audience for the first time, including hundreds of neverbefore-seen
photos.
This gorgeous book will capture the essence of Billie inside and out, offering readers
glimpses into her childhood, her life on tour, and more. A must-have for any fan.
The Missing Sister
by Lucinda riley
They’ll search the world to find her. From the Sunday Times number one bestselling
author Lucinda Riley, The Missing Sister is the seventh instalment in the multimillioncopy
epic series The Seven Sisters.
The six D’Apliese sisters have each been on their own incredible journey to discover
their heritage, but they still have one question left unanswered: who and where is the
seventh sister?
They only have one clue - an image of a star-shaped emerald ring. The search to find
the missing sister will take them across the globe - from New Zealand to Canada,
England, France and Ireland - uniting them all in their mission to complete their family
at last. In doing so, they will slowly unearth a story of love, strength and sacrifice that
began almost one hundred years ago, as other brave young women risk everything to
change the world around them.
Bridge Over Troubled Dreams
by delta Goodrem
The emotional stories behind Delta Goodrem’s sixth studio album.
In her first-ever book, Australian singer-songwriter Delta Goodrem shares the intimate
stories behind each of the tracks on her sixth studio album, Bridge Over Troubled Dreams,
taking readers on a deep dive into her inspiration for each song and revealing the truth
behind the lyrics.
From the touching account of her birth – two months premature – to battling bouts of
missing home and many incredible self-discoveries along the way, Bridge Over Troubled
Dreams is truly the book of the artist’s life. She speaks candidly about love, family, highs
and lows, patience, freedom, faith, hope and survival, and how she uses lessons learned
to drive herself forward.
Delta’s heartfelt stories are accompanied by never-before-seen pictures from her personal
collection: candid behind-the-scenes shots, unreleased tour photos and even personal
snaps from her childhood.
Faking It: My Life in Transition
by Kyle Mewburn
Kyle Mewburn grew up in the sunburnt, unsophisticated Brisbane suburbs of the 1960s and
‘70s in a household with little love and no books, with a lifelong feeling of being somehow
wrong - like ‘strawberry jam in a spinach can’.
In this book, Kyle describes this early life and her journey to becoming her own person - a
celebrated children’s book author, a husband and, finally, a woman. She shares the dreams,
the prejudice and the agony of growing up trans and coming out, the lengthy physical ordeal
of facial feminisation surgery, and her experiences as a woman - good, bad and creepy.
This is a heartbreaking, often hilarious, candid true story about what it means to hide
from yourself, your partner and the world, and then to attain the freedom and acceptance
of being yourself.
A story with the bittersweet beauty you’d expect from the writer of Old Huhu that is relevant
for anyone wanting to know and understand the trans experience - or anyone wanting to
discover who they are and what they are meant to be.
