Opposition ramps up over planned
2000-home development
• By Susan Sandys
LINCOLN RESIDENTS with
concerns about the proposed
2000-home Lincoln South
development have turned out en
masse to a meeting.
More than 200 attended the
meeting held in the town on
Wednesday night last week.
Sam Elder
said she had
got together
with a small
group of fellow
residents
to organise
the meeting,
Sam Elder
after becoming
aware of the
large scale of
the Carter Group development
and confusion in the community
about it.
The group had organised
district council planning staff to
answer questions from residents
at the meeting, which was
chaired by Lincoln resident and
former mayor Michael McEvedy.
They had invited Tim Carter of
Carter Group, but he was unable
to make it.
Elder said concerns voiced
by residents were numerous.
They included the development
CONCERNS: Last week’s meeting over the proposed Lincoln South development.
would result in increased traffic
and emissions, the loss of high
quality agricultural soil, pressure
on the town’s infrastructure and
services, and reduced air quality
due to dust from earthworks.
The meeting was calm, albeit
there were some with really
strong views, she said.
“They (residents) have huge
number of questions about it,
and real concerns about it,” Elder
said.
Submissions to the district
council on the Lincoln South
proposal, which has been lodged
as Plan Change 69, close at 5pm
tomorrow.
Elder applauded the district
council for establishing a Friend
of Submitters to help people
with the submission process. The
Friend of Submitters was independent
planner Liz White, and
she is contactable at 0272285006
and liz@lwp.co.nz, and in person
at the Todd Lounge at Lincoln
Event Centre 2.30-6.30pm today.
Plan Change 69 proposes to
change the Selwyn District Plan
to rezone about 190 ha of land
to allow for up to 2000 homes
located generally on the south
side of the township. The land is
to the immediate south of the Te
Whāriki and Verdeco residential
subdivisions, to the east and
west of Springs Rd, and to the
north of Collins Rd. The western
and eastern boundaries are an
ephemeral waterway termed
Western Boundary Drain and
the LII River respectively.
Tim Carter told Selwyn Times
in a statement that he was not
surprised there was considerable
community interest.
“It’s important to the Carter
Group that this development
maintains the character and rural
feel of Lincoln,” Carter said.
On the Lincoln South website
Carter says the development is
about people being able to own
their own home, and that more
houses are needed in the fastgrowing
district.
As well as the website, the
company had set up a Facebook
page for people to provide
feedback. He also welcomed
feedback through the district
council’s submission process.
Incredible survival story: Driver
• By Susan Sandys
JOHNNY MILLER was stuck
up a tree with raging floodwaters
beneath him.
The 54-year-old Hororata
plasterer had phoned his friend
after abandoning his vehicle. In
the pitch-black darkness, heavy
rain soaked through his jacket
and he started to feel cold. His
phone was about to go dead, but
before it did, he got the text he
was hoping for - help was on its
way.
It was the start of a fourhour
battle for survival, which
ended with Miller being swept
downstream and clinging to a
branch before being winched to
safety.
The interior plasterer
and racehorse trainer was
among those saved in several
dramatic air rescues during the
Canterbury floods.
He had been driving to
Darfield from his home and had
almost reached the town when
his car suddenly hit raging
waters about 7pm.
Miller said he had not
expected the Hawkins River on
Greendale Rd to have risen like
it did. The river is usually dry,
but runs across the road when
it is flowing. Miller said he had
driven across it just a couple of
NIGHT RESCUE: Rod May’s tractor lights up the Hawkins River and a swift water rescue crew during the first two
attempts to pluck Johnny Miller from a tree. Miller later leapt into the water and was rescued by an air force helicopter.
Right: Miller relaxing after his ordeal.
hours earlier, when the river
was just a “trickle” and the road
had been “as good as gold.”
“I went out in the dark, it was
my fault, the road wasn’t closed,
before I knew it, I hit it,” he said.
His Ford Ranger floated
downstream. He undid his
seat-belt and picked up his
cellphone. He pressed the
number at the top of the
recently-phoned list on the
screen, which was for his friend
Ricky Chapman.
“I said ‘S**t mate, I think I’m
in a bit of trouble’.”
He decided to climb out the
driver-side window, and zipped
his cellphone into his jacket
pocket. On the first couple of
tries the automatic button to
wind the window down didn’t
work.
“And then it went,” he said.
Remaining calm, he climbed
onto the roof and was there for
a couple of minutes as the Ranger
was swept downstream about
50m, where Miller grabbed onto
a tree. He was surrounded by
pitch blackness as he stood on a
large branch of the tree, above
the raging waters below. He
phoned Chapman again.
“I said ‘I don’t think they will
get me out of here’.”
He did not want to cause a
fuss by phoning emergency services,
and thought he would
probably be alright up the
tree for the night. Chapman
disagreed and said he would
phone 111.
“I said ‘alright’.”
Chapman soon texted him
back to say he had called 111.
After that Miller’s phone
stopped working.
While he had been reasonably
dry when he got to the tree,
Miller soon became cold and
wet from the heavy rain.
NEWS 5
plucked from raging river
After he had been there about
45 minutes, Darfield fire crews
arrived, found where he was by
calling out and shone torches in
the area.
Later a farmer, Rod May from
Darfield, shone lights from his
tractor onto the tree, while a swift
water rescue crew unsuccessfully
tried to reach Miller with boats.
An air force helicopter was next
on the scene. The helicopter
winchman was lowered down.
However, Miller was in an awkward
position in the tree and the
winchman could not reach him.
The helicopter flew away.
By this time Miller had had to
climb higher up the tree as the
water had risen. The ordeal was
now stretching into hours. It was
nearing 11pm and he was getting
“bloody cold.” However, he
said he had never felt desperate
or thought he was not going to
make it out.
“I was calm, but I was cold.
To be fair, I wasn’t worried. The
whole time I was out there I felt
calm,” Miller said.
He started to think that maybe
he could get to the bank of the
river, near where the emergency
services were, about 40m away.
He believed either the rescuers
would throw him a rope, or he
would be able to grab onto another
tree.
“I thought - I will go like hell,
and I will get out on the right side
where those torches are,” Miller
said.
“I felt I had got myself in that
position, I felt I had to try and get
myself out of it.”
He took off his jacket, keeping
on his T-shirt, shorts and work
boots, and dived into the river.
“I felt warmer in the water than
in the tree.”
The river sucked him down
under branches at one point, but
the force of the river pushed him
through the debris. He tried to
grab at trees along the way, and
after being swept about 300m
managed to hold onto the branch
of a tree.
“I had a rest on the branch, I
had a wee breather for about a
couple of minutes, and I briefly
got up the branch, and I saw the
helicopter. They must have called
the helicopter back. I got further
out on the branch and waved,
and they spotted me.”
Rod May
He had been in the water about
15 minutes when the winchman
was this time able to reach him
and lift him from the water.
He had a “windy” ride at the
end of the rope dangling under
the helicopter, as it moved to a
nearby paddock and hovered
over it for some time to get in the
right position to lower him down.
However, at that time he wasn’t
feeling the cold.
“What happens is your adrenalin
kicks in, that’s why, but then
when I got to the ground, then I
was cold, and they put me in the
stretcher,” Miller said.
In the ambulance, paramedics
told him his body temperature
was low. He was taken to
Christchurch Hospital, where he
stayed the night and was treated
for hypothermia.
Miller said he had learned a
lesson from the ordeal, about
just how quickly floodwaters
can rise and to never know what
is around the corner in such
conditions.
“Don’t expect every road that’s
not got a sign up to be foolproof,”
he said.
Miller said he had great respect
for his rescuers, who were
“gutsy.”
“You don’t want them putting
their lives out there, you know,
but they do.”
His rescuers told The Star how
they were stunned at Miller’s
survival.
Rod May, who had earlier
brought the tractor to the scene,
and his family watched as Miller
dived into the river.
“We were horrified, we thought
that’s it, he’s gone,” May said.
Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief John Chambers echoed this
fear.
“When he went into the river,
we really thought that possibly it
was the end for the poor bugger,”
Chambers said.
Miller bought a new cellphone
last week, and had plans to
retrieve his jacket and the phone
that saved his life from the tree
once floodwaters subsided. He
also planned to retrieve his
car, which he had since spotted
downstream on its side.
Line-up revealed for Selwyn Sounds
AUSTRALASIAN heavyweights
Jimmy Barnes and Jon Stevens
will headline a star-studded act
at next year’s Selwyn Sounds.
The line-up was announced
yesterday for the annual iconic
event at Lincoln Domain on
Saturday, March 5.
Event promoter David Parlane
said the travel bubble with
Australia was great news for
Selwyn Sounds.
“Jon is particularly pleased
as he was booked for our 2021
event, but could not make it due
to all the travel restrictions,” he
said.
Choirboys will also be coming
from across the Tasman.
Said Parlane: “They are still
doing what they have always
done best, play great Australian
pub rock. From where they first
started in 1978 to where they are
now, so much has happened.
“They’ve had hit records, full
houses, and travelled all over the
world . . . living the rock ‘n’ roll
dream.”
•The other acts lining up
at Selwyn Sounds are:
•Rietta Austin: From
last 20-plus years performing
in the United Kingdom and
Europe. Known as the Aotearoa
Angel, she may not be known by
many in New Zealand, but when
you are asked to be the opening
performer at the London O2
Arena, you are up there with
the best. She has featured on an
international compilation album,
alongside legendary artists
Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye,
Gladys Knight, Maxwell, Dionne
Warwick and Earth Wind And
Fire. Other recordings include
Bonnie Tyler, INXS and Sam
Smith. In the UK, Austin appeared
as a support artist for
Bryan Adams and Jocelyn
Brown and on tour in Russia for
Johnny Gill and Joe Cocker.
She has recently signed a UK
record deal with Strictly Come
NZ’s highest selling Kiwi band,
three albums charted within the
top 10 of the NZ album chart,
securing their status as a classic
mainstay in the New Zealand
music scene. They have performed
Uncertain future for
community garden
Students help with
farm clean-up
• By Susan Sandys
THE FUTURE of the Lincoln
Community Garden is under
threat as the town’s maternity
hospital prepares to close.
The 800sqm garden, managed
by the charitable trust Lincoln
Envirotown, is on land at the
hospital site, made available by
the Canterbury District Health
Board.
The CDHB has applied to the
Ministry of Health for permission
to dispose of the land as it
plans to relocate the hospital’s
services to Selwyn Health Hub
next year.
Lincoln Envirotown project
manager Dave Fitzjohn said the
CDHB had indicated to the trust
that it would give it six months
notice in the event of it having to
move. It had not yet received the
notice.
Fitzjohn believed it was highly
unlikely the garden would be
able to stay at the location.
“I think once the community
has a community garden, you
should really try and keep it
somewhere because it’s very hard
to turn the clock back and establish
a new one,” Fitzjohn said.
ESTABLISHED: The popular Lincoln Community Garden.
He hoped the garden could be
established elsewhere.
The trust would be on the
lookout for land that another
organisation, such as a church
or the district council, could
provide.
He said the garden was a venue
for many Envirotown workshops
and working bees.
Its produce helped feed the
community.
Volunteers harvested fruit and
vegetables, giving these away to
people in need and selling them
at the workshops with funds
going to Envirotown. Lincoln
Kindergarten also has plots at
the site.
Structures include a small
glass house, archway and
CDHB-owned garden shed.
Darfield High School launched their own version of
the student volunteer army following the catastrophic
Canterbury floods. “Many hands make light work,” said their
principal Andy England. That was the ethos behind about
70 senior students getting out onto surrounding properties,
particularly along the Hawkins River, and in the Sheffield
and Springfield areas. On Thursday and Friday the students
visited 12 farms, assisting the farmers with reinstating fences
and clearing them of debris. Meanwhile, Selwyn MP Nicola
Grigg and former Christchurch Central National candidate
Dale Stephens have set up a Givealittle page called
Manaakitanga: Feed and Seed to help flood-devastated
Canterbury farmers and their animals.
Victoria Cross recipient’s earthquake
damaged family plot to be repaired
• By Chris Barclay
THE EARTHQUAKE-damaged
family plot of Lincoln-born
Sergeant Henry Nicholas,
Canterbury’s first Victoria Cross
recipient, will be repaired after
the New Zealand Remembrance
Army answered the call of a
distressed Korean War veteran.
Ken Wright’s campaign
to reinstall and clean the
toppled headstone in Bromley
Cemetery will reach fruition
after the charity devoted to the
restoration of New Zealand war
graves learned of the plot’s state.
NZ Remembrance Army chief
executive Simon Strombom
said the city council would be
approached to organise the
necessary consents and ideally
the rejuvenated plot would be
unveiled in about two months.
“We’ll hopefully get a
ceremony organised because it
is a nationally significant grave,”
he said.
The headstone had to be lifted
and pinned, with Strombom
estimating the work would cost
$1500 to $2000.
“We’ll underwrite it and get it
done. This is what we’re here for,”
he said.
“This is a classic case, there’s
war graves all over New Zealand
and no one looks after them. We
just funded six (repairs) in Te
Awamutu.”
Strombom said the
Christchurch branch of
the Returned and Services’
Association would contribute to
the project.
The New Zealand Army and
Veterans Affairs’ New Zealand
had also pledged support.
Wright first noticed the family
plot 20 years ago when visiting
from Dunedin. He moved to
Christchurch last November and
was appalled the plot has not
been repaired since the
2011 earthquakes.
PROGRESS:
The family
plot of Victoria
Cross recipient
Sergeant Henry
Nicholas is set to
be repaired by
the New Zealand
Remembrance
Army.
He was rapt to hear the NZ
Remembrance Army had
mobilised.
“That’s brilliant, bloody great,”
Wright said.
Nicholas was awarded the
VC for his heroic exploits in
December 1917 when storming
a German machine gun nest in
Belgium during World War 1.
Nicholas was killed, aged 27,
in France on October, 29 1918,
shortly before the armistice.
Robyn Thew, a great-niece of
Nicholas, was delighted the plot
would be restored and noted
Henry’s brothers Frederick
Charles and Ernest, who also
served in World War 1, were also
buried there with their mother
Hannah.
“The family lost quite a lot.
They lost one of their sons and
the other two came back pretty
shell-shocked. They never had
families,” she said.
Thew visited the plot several
years ago and felt guilty the plot
had lay so long in disrepair.
“My sister said to me: ‘I never
even thought about that grave.
When the earthquakes happened
the last thing you think of is
the gravestone of an old relative
don’t you’?
“I felt really sad that we hadn’t
thought about that.”
The NZ Remembrance Army,
formed on January 1, 2019,
relies on donations from the
public, which can be made at
Message from Mayor Sam
Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to help each other get through
what was a dramatic storm with lasting effects. As the storm built rapidly I was heartened to see and
hear so many stories of selfless acts of kindness and generosity within our community.
Thank you for being brave and to those who reached out for support, by asking early our volunteer
teams were able to help before bad situations deteriorated.
Thank you to our Selwyn Gets Ready network of volunteers. Your ability to mobilise at the drop of a hat is
a testament to the amount of time you put into preparing for these situations. Your local connection and
swift action to open community welfare centres allows the response to be much more locally focused.
Thank you to our farmers for the early action you took, the neighbours you helped, the stock you
saved, and for the heavy equipment you used to save the day for so many of our community.
Thank you to our Emergency Operations Centre staff and volunteers, and those from our partner
agencies through this event. Being able to gather information centrally, and then coordinate activity,
led to timely decision making and a much more efficient response.
Thanks to the many business owners who opened their doors, provided services free of charge or
released staff to support their families or volunteer for our community.
We live in a district full of awesome people and organisations – and you have shown that you not only
care for your own needs but also for the community around you.
Thank you all for your work over the past week.
To the Hororata fire service
for their quick response on
Sunday.
These wonderful volunteers
came out in horrendous weather,
stood in thigh-high water to
clear a blocked drain that was
causing flooding to neighbouring
properties. Their pumping
avoided potential evacuations.
Also to Blakelys which pumped
overnight down on the corner
and into the next day. Their work
cleared the flooded road and
reduced the water level in the
drain to a manageable level.
Thank you.
– Yvonne Thomas
Hororata
I would like to share my
experience of Lincoln Maternity
Hospital.
I had my first born in the late
60s in what was then called St
Helen’s.
A year or so later I had
my second child at Lincoln
Maternity Hospital. A totally
different experience!
It was the doctor’s first night
on duty. The buzzer wasn’t
operating so the doctor didn’t
make it. The midwife (who had
greeted us at 1am, in her dressing
gown) said no worries and
gave my husband a mask, saying
he was her help.
That set the tone for a wonderful
friendly atmosphere. A
mother and baby could stay for
a few days until they felt ready
to go home. I vividly remember
sitting out on the lawn
writing letters.
I felt it was the closest thing
to having a baby at home. The
nurses and staff were lovely.
A few years later I had my
third child at Lincoln, once
again experiencing a warm and
friendly atmosphere.
I will always have fond
memories of my time at Lincoln
Maternity Hospital.
One other thing I should
mention is prior to having my
daughter at Lincoln Maternity
we were given a list of rules and
things to take with us when the
time came.
In the letter we were asked to
arrive before 11pm or after 5am.
I was outside those hours and
ready to go at 1am which is why
we were greeted by the matron
in her dressing gown!
That was 1969.
– Jenny Chater
Leeston
NEW ZEALAND has about
1500 native weevils or snout
beetles in the Curculionidae
family. There are close to 50
other introduced weevils here,
some of which have become
significant
pest
species.
One
such
species
found
recently at
my home
is the
lucerne
weevil,
known scientifically as Sitona
discoideus.
This weevil was accidently
introduced from Australia and
first discovered in Hawkes Bay
in 1974, but originated in the
Mediterranean.
Adults are 5mm long, grey to
brown in colour with three pale
stripes on their thorax.
Lucerne is their main host, but
they do feed on other medics
(Medicago species) and very
occasionally on clover.
Both adult weevils and larvae
can cause significant damage.
The adults feed on leaves and
make characteristic scalloping
of the leaf margins and are
active from
December
to January,
whereas
larvae feed
on roots or
within root
nodules.
Oviposition
or egg
laying usually
occurs
in the soil from May to October.
Soil dwelling larvae are mostly
seen around lucerne roots in late
spring and are legless, white and
reach 5mm in length. Pupation
occurs in the soil 10-100mm
deep. The species only has one
generation per year.
In 1982 a parasitoid wasp,
Microctonus aethiopoides was
introduced from Morocco as a
biocontrol agent, which proved
successful.
Cancer survivor and
CANCER SURVIVOR Diana
Reid of Darfield has received
the Queen’s Service Medal for
services to cancer support.
The 80-yearold
(left) is one
of two residents
in the district
who have been
recognised in
the Queen’s
Birthday Honours.
The other
is Stephen Phillips of Rolleston,
who has been named a Member
of the New Zealand Order of
Merit, for services to seniors and
the community.
Reid helped to establish the
Malvern Cancer Support Group
in Darfield in 1983, after identifying
the need for a local group. She
is herself a bowel cancer survivor,
having contracted the illness at
the young age of 34.
Reid said she felt the medal
was not just for herself, but that it
was also for her late friend Janice
Collier, who was a co-founder of
the group.
“She died of cancer in 1999,
that was devastating for me,”
Reid said.
Reid was the group’s coordinator
for many years. The
role included providing transport
to hospital for residents receiving
treatment, supplying affected
families with meals, offering
cleaning and gardening services,
and providing companionship
and moral support.
Thirty-eight years later, she
is still an active member of the
group.
Reid has been involved with
fundraising for the Cancer Society
of New Zealand Canterbury
– West Coast Division, including
its signature Daffodil Day event
and Relay for Life.
While she is regarded as a dedicated
volunteer and inspiration to
those facing a cancer diagnosis,
she was humble about receiving
the QSM.
“I feel very grateful, but there’s
so many people, it wasn’t just
me, it’s always been a combined
effort,” she said.
Phillips was chief executive of
Age Concern Canterbury from
2008 to 2012 and has been vice
president of Age Concern New
Zealand since 2020. He was a national
board member from 2017
and a Canterbury board member
from 2014.
He has empowered older
people by establishing, promoting
and supporting initiatives to
improve the quality of services.
Since 2016, he has been an
independent trustee of Ōtautahi
Community
Housing Trust,
which manages
a social housing
portfolio
of more than
2400 units. He
has been deputy
Stephen
Phillips
chairman of
the Canterbury
District Health
Board consumer council and a
trustee of Canterbury Health
Care for Elderly Trust since 2017.
He has contributed to the
development of city-wide
policies to promote inclusive
communities and ensured
funding for organisations
working with seniors.
Phillips was instrumental in
setting up service desks after
the 2011 earthquake. He was
convener of all service desks in
Canterbury from 2012 to 2016.
He has been a Justice of the
multiple governance roles with
the Canterbury Justices of the
Peace Association, including as
president from 2011 to 2013.
OUR PEOPLE – PHILLIP HARRALL 13
Wartime highs and lows remembered
Tell me about how you came
to live in Lincoln.
We (myself and wife Fiona)
had been coming backwards and
forwards (from our former home
in England) for quite some time.
I have a lot of cousins who live
at Rolleston and Rangiora and
areas around. I was born in New
Zealand (but moved to the UK
when I was a baby), as my father
was recalled by the Royal Navy
Fleet Air Arm, because they were
very short of experienced fighter
pilots. He had served as a fighter
pilot in World War 2. My elder
daughter moved to Auckland
about 10 years ago, so we were
coming out to visit her. She is
now in Prebbleton. We made
the decision we would probably
come back to New Zealand at
some time. Then we had a granddaughter,
and decided to come
back. We made the decision to
move to Lincoln, which we did
in 2019. It’s paid off and we are
really happy to be here.
Are you involved in the local
community?
One of the things we decided
to do if we came back was to get
involved in the local community,
hence joining Lincoln Rotary.
Lincoln Rotary seems to be
bucking the trend, getting more
and more members. When
we joined there were about 35
members, in two years we are
up to 66 members. It’s fantastic,
we are growing. It’s lovely to see,
I’m really proud of the group,
we do a lot of work for the local
community.
How did you come to join the
Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm?
I went to a school in Elgin in
the north of Scotland while my
father was based at the Royal Naval
Air Station at Lossiemouth,
which was seven miles away.
I was awarded a place to
study physics at the Aberdeen
University. At the same time,
being a navy brat, I threw my
hat in the ring and went down
to do selection at Biggin Hill
RAF station. I passed both tests
for pilot and observer. My father
being a pilot, I elected to become
an observer, I didn’t want to
follow in his footsteps and be
always told you are not as good
as your old man!
The observer is a tactician in
the aircraft, they look after all
the weapons, navigation, and
the radar. I gave up Aberdeen
University and went down to the
Britannia Royal Naval College in
Dartmouth in Devon.
Tell me about your experience
of the Falklands War.
(At first) I was what was
known as the helicopter warfare
instructor on the squadron of
Lynxes (specialist naval anti-surface
helicopters). I was one of the
few people who had fired the Sea
Skua (air to surface) lightweight
anti-ship missile (from the Lynx)
under trial conditions. So I spent
a lot of my time with my Lynx
and my pilot, going from ship to
ship, briefing the crews on how
to fire the missile. The Sea Skua
was never designed to sink ships,
it was designed to sort of cause
them a problem.
Did you ever fire one to cause
a ship a problem?
That’s a very sore point, I was
probably the only bugger who
didn’t fire one! Once I got into
what we called the territory
exclusion zone, the 200-mile
circle around the Falklands, my
role changed. I had a very large
infrared camera on the side of
the (Lynx) aircraft and my role
was to go close in shore at night
and take infrared images of the
areas around Port Stanley (where
the Argentinians had taken over
an airfield). The pilot and I had
to fly off the ships to look at the
land to see what we could see in
the way of troops or radars or
weaponry.
That sounds like real high
adrenaline stuff, how did you
know you wouldn’t get shot
down?
Well, we had a very good
electronic warfare system on
board the Lynx, so I could see
their radar on my screen and I
could see if they were tracking
us. On about the third night we
had gone in and we were just
watching what was happening
on the camera. Suddenly, I got a
very bright light. They had fired
a missile called Tiger Cat. I knew
it had a range of about six miles,
and I knew I was sitting eight
miles off the coast. However,
when you watch the recording
of the thermal imaging and the
data recording of our voices in
the cockpit, my voice gets higher
and higher as this thing gets
closer and closer. I begin to realise
that actually it doesn’t stop
at six miles, it’s gone ballistic
by that stage. So we just took
evasive action, it splashed in the
water about a mile from us. Once
the missile motor burned out, it
continued on for another mile.
Did you see it coming?
This was two in the morning;
it was complete darkness. We
couldn’t see the missile, but
because I was tracking it on
the camera, we just turned 90
degrees to the missile, increased
speed and went down to a low
DECORATED: Phillip Harrall has been
included operating as an observer in
the specialist naval anti-surface Lynx
helicopter during the Falklands War.
level so it didn’t have a chance of
getting near us.
You must have nerves of steel.
I wouldn’t say it was nerves of
steel, I would just say we were
highly trained.
Have you had any other close
calls?
We were doing a recky of West
Falkland, again about two in the
morning... this time Fox Bay. It
had two little airstrips on it. I
think the command were worried
that the Argentinians could make
use of those airfields. So we went
in to have a quick look, and all
hell broke loose. The Argentinian
ground troops fired on us, the
Lynx got hit in the tail. We were
aware that we had been hit, we
didn’t know how badly. So we left
the area and returned to the ship
at very low level. We didn’t want
to fall from 200 feet into the water,
we would rather fall from 50 feet.
After we landed, the admiral staff
air engineer looked at the holes in
the tail, and said “Do you realise
if you put holes in a tube it makes
the tube stronger?” to which I said
“Well you fly the frickin’ thing
then.”
ARA INSTITUTE OF CANTERBURY
Free computing
course delivers
unexpected benefits
14
Fighter pilot follows
A simple desire to become more digital
savvy has opened a world of possibilities for
business owner Thomas King.
A co-director of a logistics business for 20
years, Thomas has seen huge changes in the
way business is conducted.
“The world is rapidly changing and to keep
pace with it, having some confidence and
competence in computing is crucial,” he says.
“I realised that I’d have to embrace this new
tech-driven world sooner or later, and now
here I am today, loving what I once feared.”
Thomas took his first steps in computing at
Ara Connect which offers free, non-assessed
computing courses for anyone wanting to gain
skills and confidence using digital technology.
Thomas says the tutors at Ara Connect
welcomed him warmly, made learning
an enjoyable experience and were
very supportive. “I felt so inspired
during my journey. The tutors want
you to succeed and they encourage
you to push your boundaries without
ever throwing you in the deep end.”
Discovering something new and
amazing every time he got on a
computer was one of the things
Thomas enjoyed most about his time
at Ara. “There are some amazing
apps and software out there.
I’ve especially fallen in love with
collaboration tools which can help
me complete a host of project management
tasks.”
Thomas is now considering further study
and possibly a complete career change. “I’m
keeping my options open but a future in IT
is becoming more likely for me with every
passing day.”
His advice for anyone else considering the
computing courses at Ara Connect is to just
go for it. “Knowing how to use computers can
make life so much easier. I certainly wish I’d
taken courses like these two decades ago. My
advice is to pluck up the courage and just go
for it.”
School. To find out more, visit ara.ac.nz or
RECOGNISED: Phillip receiving the Air Force Cross for Gallantry, with his
wife Fiona, at Buckingham Palace in 1988.
• From page 13
Did you fly that helicopter again?
They did the best repairs they could
and we flew it for about another couple of
weeks. We took it across to Atlantic Conveyor
(navy ship). An hour later (after we
left), Atlantic Conveyor was sunk. I feel a
little bit like Pig Pen in the Charles Shultze
cartoon of Charlie Brown, where there
is a cloud of dust following little Pig Pen
around wherever he goes. I feel that trouble
did that to me in the Falklands, it seemed
to follow me around.
What’s another example of trouble
following you?
We picked up a spare Lynx after the
one we lost on the Atlantic Conveyor. We
hopped off from HMS Hermes which
was the aircraft carrier, across to HMS
Broadsword, which got bounced by four
Argentinian aircraft. The ship had some
very good anti-aircraft missile systems and
it was firing those. Then she was hit with a
thousand pound bomb.
Did the bomb explode?
I was standing in the hangar, the bomb
hit the sides, it was a bit of a thud as it hit.
Everyone looked at each other and thought
“Uh oh.” It didn’t explode. It hit one of the
vertical walls of the ship, came up the vertical
wall and out through the flight deck
and took the nose off the spare Lynx that
we had borrowed and completely trashed
it. The bomb went over the side, into the
sea. The only injury was one of the two
laundry men who were from Hong Kong,
they were part of the Chinese laundry
which was very famous on navy warships,
and one of them took a bit of a splinter as
the bomb hit the vertical wall and went up.
Did you feel lucky to be alive?
I think three or four months later, I felt
lucky to be alive. I think at the time there
is so much adrenaline going through your
body that you just get on and go with the
training, you know there is war to fight,
let’s get on with it.
Do you have any other stories from the
Falklands War?
We were sent about 200 miles to the
south, east of the Falklands, just to see if
any shipping was coming up from that
particular direction. It was a horrible, horrible
foggy night, and we picked up a radar
contact which we couldn’t identify. (Command)
decided it was a threat, and we had
the skua missiles on board and they said
“Take the target out.” You know how the
hairs on the back of your neck go up, you
think something is not quite right? So I
said to (pilot) Alan Harper “We are going
to go and identify the target.” It was like a
line from the film Top Gun. “You want to
do what?” We came around behind it, we
honed onto it, we put all our landing lights
on in the fog and we identified it as a UK
survey ship painted up as a hospital ship.
It was out of position, because it wanted
to break away and behave independently,
so that the Argentinian air force wouldn’t
find it. We found it, we were given permission
to attack it, we didn’t because
something didn’t feel right, it turned out
my hunch was correct.
in family’s footsteps
favourite fashion store
What are your thoughts on war?
There’s a lot of pithy comments about
war, you know, “Ninety-nine per cent
boredom, one per cent sheer terror.” It’s a
bit like that. In the Falklands, every hour
of every day we were under attack, I can
think of two days when we weren’t under
attack because of thick fog, but we still flew
in the thick fog and managed to get back
to our own ships, using the radar and the
electronic warfare kit. The sad thing of all
was that I was one of the training team
for the Argentinians when they bought
the Lynx. A few years before, I had met
most of their Lynx crews and done a lot
of lecturing and teaching for them on the
equipment they had. And there we were
trying to kill each other.
Tell me about the Gulf War.
During the Falklands War I was a
lieutenant, during the Gulf War I was
a lieutenant commander, I was a navy
liaison officer to the army. It was more or
less “What can the navy do for you?” That
was a land campaign for me and that was
completely different from being in the air.
PREPARED: Phillip Harrall
pictured on the left, in the
Royal Navy in 1972 (left);
Cambridge with a Masters
in Philosophy in 1997.
There’s not really a lot I would like to talk
about because I probably couldn’t. A lot of
it is still classified, basically.
Did you lose friends in either of the
wars?
About three or four (in the Gulf War),
in the Falklands quite a lot. About half a
dozen were Lynx crews. It is difficult to
take, but life goes on and you move on.
You revert back to your training, and you
get lots of support from your family and
friends.
Did you get any recognition for your
service?
In 1988 I was awarded an Air Force
Cross (AFC) for Gallantry which we collected
from the Queen. That was a grand
day out to go to Buckingham Palace.
What was the AFC for Gallantry
awarded in relation to?
It was a number of different incidents
that accumulated in being awarded it. It’s
an oddball one, because I can’t say a lot
about it. It was after the Falklands, it was
just as we were developing tactics to look
closely at maritime counter terrorism.
Recovery under way
after flooding
Civil Defence and the Council are continuing to respond to the flooding event from last week.
The rain caused significant flooding along Selwyn’s rivers and damage and disruption to roads,
water supplies and homes.
NIWA figures show almost 400ml of rain fell in the area around Springfield on Saturday, Sunday
and Monday. Environment Canterbury river flow data showed at the height of the floods 447 cubic
meters of water was flowing through Coes Ford every second, compared to an average of 2 cubic
metres per second over the previous month.
Around 203 households evacuated from their homes during the flooding with support from Civil
Defence where necessary. Civil Defence Centres were set up in Darfield and Lincoln and around
16 households remain out of their homes and receiving support from the Council’s Civil Defence
welfare team.
Selwyn Civil Defence Manager Al Lawn says the focus over the coming weeks will be assisting
people in flood damaged homes, getting roads and water back up and running and providing
support to communities badly affected, including the rural community.
“There’s a big clean up to come. The community has responded really well to get through the
flooding, now we need to look after our people who have lost homes or had their farms and
businesses damaged, to help them get back on their feet.”
Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says he is proud to see the way the community has come together.
“It’s been great to see the way the community has pulled together once again, taking people
into homes, helping out in the rain, checking on your neighbours and so much more. There’s a
long way to go, but we’re a resilient district and I know we will keep supporting each other in the
months to come.”
If you need help with your flood damaged home or feel you have been adversely affected by the
recent weather event and need assistance, please give us a call on 0800 SELWYN (735 996) or
email contactus@selwyn.govt.nz and we will assist or connect you with the appropriate agency.
We are also encouraging people to please check on your neighbours and make sure they are
doing okay.
Kidsfest returning these holidays
The Council will be running a busy programme for the popular
annual KidsFest event, from Saturday 10 to Sunday 25 July.
KidsFest has been running for 30 years and this year has seen some
exciting additions on top of the old favourites returning, Council
Events and Funding Coordinator Cristene Trenuela Chan says.
“We’re delighted with an exciting line up of over 70 events this year.
We’ve put a real focus on getting events out across more of the
district and we’ve been able to add a whole new set of events at the
Selwyn Sports Centre as well.”
This year’s festival will feature events held across libraries,
sports and community centres, and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre,
including the return of favourites such as the high ropes challenge,
Moviemania and the return of Elgregoe the Magician.
There has been a focus on increasing events district wide such as
the popular Kids Market which will see markets held in Rolleston
and Darfield in addition to the annual Kids Market in Lincoln.
The Selwyn Youth Council will be bringing the dance moves for
13-17 year olds, with two BOOST events – a Hip Hop workshop and
disco – come along bring your TikTok moves.
Children and families will once again have the opportunity to get a
whole new view of the district through the Eye Spy Selwyn activity
hunt, which will take children to explore the district and win prizes.
Tickets and full details of the events are available now at
Selwyn families can also attend events in
Christchurch and Waimakariri.
New pool opens at Selwyn Aquatic Centre
The new pool at Selwyn Aquatic Centre officially opened last week.
The new 10-lane, 25-metre pool was opened to the public on Tuesday, completing the main extension
works to the centre and substantially increasing the pool space.
Once the new pool has been opened for at least two weeks
the existing main pool will be closed for maintenance,
including reducing the depth of the pool. The new pool,
leisure pool and learn to swim pools will remain open.
Five new family changing rooms, a new accessible family
changing room, and new smaller male and female overflow
changing rooms next to the aquatic centre extension have
already opened.
The upgraded female changing rooms, foyer and additional
administration space are on track to open in late June.
Applications are open for the Selwyn Youth Project Fund for any
A hidden community treasure
Over the coming months we’ll be putting the spot light on some of our community halls and the great
service they provide to our community, starting with the Weedons Community Pavilion.
Tucked away on Maddisons Road off from the main route to West Melton, sits the Weedons
Community Pavilion.
Only a five minute drive from Rolleston, this modern hall has seen a recent increase of people
through its doors. It has hosted several sporting events, Zumba classes, corporate events, education
workshops, birthday parties and Council-led events, Council’s Weedons Community Pavilion Duty
Manager Chelsea Jones says.
“A lot more people are finding out from other people that the place is hireable and how cheap it is.
We've even had a few hirers from the West Melton Community Centre. When West Melton Community
Centre is fully booked we recommend Weedons and book them in straight away."
The venue is often hired for children's birthday parties, because the glass doors allow for an easy view
of the grass area outside, she says.
“It's just got a nice atmosphere about it. It's nice to see it being used and not just sitting there."
Selwyn Parenting Network coordinator Kate
Webb, attended an event at the Pavilion and
instantly recommended it to Talk Together
founder Megan Lewis who runs speechlanguage
therapy sessions for children.
“They've been really struggling to find a venue
that is suitable. It's just the perfect size, because
the kids need space to break out into little work
out groups but they don't want this massive big
area. I think this is a lovely little venue."
As a frequent user of Lincoln Event Centre,
Kate says she's beginning to use the other
community facilities all over Selwyn and has
really enjoyed discovering these new areas.
“The Council has been quite proactive about
getting out into these other spaces, which is
really cool."
The art of mortgage advising
Sharon Hunt,
Mortgage Advisor
and the Director at
Loancraft
Sharon Hunt is a Mortgage Advisor
and the Director at Loancraft, a Leestonbased
Financial Advice Provider—and
they have an ethos to leave you in a better
financial position than when you first
meet. It doesn’t matter who you are, you
should be better off for working with
Loancraft. Sharon and the team have a
wealth of experience when it comes to the
financial world and are proud of the help
they’re able to provide, evident by the fact
that clients come back time and again for
advice on how to manage their money
because they know—help is just a phone
call away.
What Loancraft can help with
Loancraft arrange loans for people that
are in the market for a new home (either
buying or building), or those who need
top-up loans for renovations, investments
or a new car. In most cases—and it’s the
core of what they do—you’ll start with
a budget assessment to discover all your
debts and credit cards, look at what you’re
earning, where that money is currently
spent (rent, rates, food, insurance, etc)
and importantly, what’s leftover (the banks
call this a surplus and it’s very important.
Whether you have short- or long-term
financial goals, they can help you forward
plan to reach them. Debt consolidation
can play a big role in getting you on
track—rolling all your debt into one loan
with a lower interest rate than you’re
currently paying. Without this, you could
be short-changing yourself and decreasing
your borrowing capacity, so this is an ideal
way to set yourself up and improve your
financial position.
What you can expect
To give you the best they’ve got,
Sharon and the team do a thorough
job in assessing your financial position.
They’ll ask lots of questions, sometimes
about things you might not have even
realised were relevant—like the limit of
your credit cards (not just the balance).
They’ll also encourage conversation about
how and where you currently spend
your money and analyse how that ties in
with your grand plans. Even if you’re not
financially ready for large commitments
like a mortgage, they help you on that
journey with good preparation. But don’t
be disheartened if you don’t have enough
money now, or don’t earn enough—that
home loan might not be as far away as you
think and Loancraft will be with you every
step of the way.
So, if you’re sitting there thinking
“money is tight, but I can’t afford financial
advice”, that’s simply not true. 99% of the
time your advice is completely free. You’ll
only pay a fee in exceptional circumstances
which is all covered off in the terms of
engagement you’ll sign.
If you’re ready to get control of your
finances, or you’re planning to buy,
build or renovate and think you might
benefit from some financial advice, get
in touch with Sharon at Loancraft before
you make any big decisions. You can
reach her on 0274 339 752 or at www.
NOW THAT winter is here we
can expect regular, heavy frosts.
However, the gloom of winter
is brightened by the appearance
of blooming azaleas, camellias,
early flowering rhododendrons
and early flowering cherries. It’s
an excellent time to plan your
summer garden.
It’s also time to harvest those
winter maturing vegetables that
were planted in late summer/
autumn. Veges to harvest
in winter include artichoke
(Jerusalem), broccoli, brussels
sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers
and carrots.
Continue to spread compost
around maturing vegetables
to help with excess water and
improve the soil. Inspect your
vegetable plants regularly for
snails – they appear to become
more cold-hardy every year.
Where possible, prepare
the soil for spring plantings,
digging to a depth of 200mm
and adding compost as you go.
Ensure it is mixed in well.
Winter flowering annuals
should now be providing masses
of colour in your gardens
and containers. Remove dead
flowers to encourage continuous
blooming throughout winter.
Flowering winter annuals
include; ageratum, calendulas,
cineraria, cornflower, nemesia,
pansies, poppies, primulas,
snapdragon, stock and sweet
pea. Top up existing plantings
with ‘potted colour’ annuals
that have been grown to the
flowering stage.
Complete pruning of
deciduous fruit trees and
spray with copper oxychloride
to prevent fungal diseases
reappearing in spring. Grapes
and kiwifruit can also be
pruned. Garden centres and
nurseries now have new season
fruit trees in stock.
Plan your purchases carefully.
Part of your fruit tree
selection should be to ensure
you have a year-round supply
of fresh fruit. You can easily do
this by planting a few varieties
that crop at different times of
the year. In warmer areas, a
variety of citrus will be ripening
soon, including mandarins,
lemons, limes, grapefruit and
early oranges. Last plantings of
strawberries should be completed
before August.
Garden centres are bursting
with new stock of a wide range
of ornamental trees and shrubs.
Winter is a very safe time for
planting. Ensure your planting
sites are well prepared with
the addition of compost and
have adequate drainage. Pop
GARDENING 21
Winter a safe time for planting
in a planting tab when planting
your trees/shrubs to give
them the best start. Plan out
what and where you will plant.
Check the heights that plants
will grow to avoid overcrowding
in future years.
Winter is the main time for
pruning roses as the plants are
now dormant. Don’t be afraid
to prune your roses quite hard.
Spread fresh compost around
the base of the bushes.
One week after pruning,
spray with lime sulphur or
a copper compound such as
copper oxychloride to ward
off fungal diseases (do not mix
these sprays together), then
three or four days later, apply
a horticultural spray to kill off
any overwintering pests (again
do not mix with copper).
Garden hygiene is very
important with roses so remove
any dead leaves or diseased
wood from the ground. Remove
these from the property
as they can harbour overwintering
fungal diseases and reinfect
your plants come spring.
Don’t forget about your
houseplants in winter. Try not
to overwater them. Many only
require water once a week or
fortnight. A light misting of
foliage with warm water stops
leaves from drying in warm
indoor conditions.
With the shortest day looming, it is time to
get prepared for planting garlic.
Garlic is a crop that is easy to grow and doesn’t require
a lot of space. Garlic also has many health benefits as
well as adding fantastic flavour to our food. All you
need is a pot or container, some top-quality growing
mix and a sunny spot somewhere around the house.
If you are starting from scratch, make sure you get a
good growing mix that is free-draining and supplies
the right nutrients. For pot and container planting, you
can use our Patio Plus Potting Mix, All Purpose Potting
Mix, Organic Growing Mix or Veggie Garden Mix. If you
have an existing area that you want to plant in, simply
mix through some organic compost and sheep pellets
to rejuvenate the soil if you haven’t done so already.
/igro.co.nz
/intelligro_nz
When choosing which cloves to plant, make sure
you choose the larger ones to maximise the growing
potential. Split the garlic heads into individual cloves.
There is no need to peel off the white paper that
surrounds each clove, it naturally protects the bulbs in
the soil, and then disintegrates once the plant starts
developing.
When planting out, make a hole about 5cm deep, and
10cm apart. If you are planting in a large area, label the
rows so you don’t forget where you have planted. In
4-6 weeks you will see the bright green shoots appear.
Once they have popped up, add a layer of mulch
around the rows to help keep the soil temperature
even, retain the moisture, and keep the weeds down.
Make sure you water frequently as to not let the plant
dry out. If you’re unsure if your mix is drying out, the
best way is to feel the soil with your fingers. If it feels
dry – give it a water.
Canterbury, we need to talk
about our changing climate
Climate change is already affecting our
local ecosystems and communities. It is
not an easy or small topic. That’s why our
local and regional councils have pooled
resources, knowledge and expertise to help
people understand, prepare for and adapt
to the climate change impacts Canterbury
is likely to experience.
The new It’s time, Canterbury website
is home to reputable information and
resources on the topic. People can explore
these pages to learn about what is expected,
as well as ideas on how we can each help
lessen and adapt to the impacts of climate
change.
What is climate change?
Over many years, scientists and tohunga
have learnt a lot about Earth’s climate
system. Through observation, we know
Earth’s temperature is currently warming
much faster than experienced before. As
Earth’s temperature continues to rise it
causes changes in rainfall, weather patterns,
and the frequency of extreme events, as
well as ice melt and sea level rise. This
results in a range of effects we experience in
our natural environment and the areas we
live in.
Climate change in Canterbury
Under a ‘business as usual’ scenario,
where greenhouse gas emissions continue
to increase, average temperatures in
Canterbury are projected to increase by
up to 3.5°C by the end of the century. The
likelihood of drought conditions is also
projected to increase, and fire risk will
increase as soils and plants become drier.
Alongside drought, over the next two
decades, we can expect wetter winters in
many eastern, western and southern parts
of Canterbury, with up to 40% more rain.
What’s being done?
The more learnt about the challenges
associated with climate change in
Canterbury, the more they’re shaping
decision-making. Councils are thinking
differently about biodiversity, water
availability, flood protection, coastal
erosion, energy, land, urban design,
infrastructure and industry so you, your
whānau, your community or your business
can be supported to better understand
and proactively respond - Mō tātou, ā, mō
kā uri, ā muri ake nei – for us, and our
children after us.
At a national level, the Climate Change
Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment
Act 2019 has a target for New Zealand to
reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to
zero by 2050, except biogenic methane,
which has its own separate reduction target.
Can I really make a difference?
Absolutely! The easiest thing you can
do is be informed and become part of the
conversation. Make sure you have verifiable
facts to base your discussions and actions
on and talk with others about what you
know. On the It’s time, Canterbury website,
you can show and share your support
simply by putting your name to the cause,
as well as learn about projected changes in
your district.
For those who want to act, there are ideas
showing how simple changes can support
New Zealand’s commitment to reducing
greenhouse gas emissions. Examples
include reducing electricity use, walking,
biking, or catching the bus instead driving,
and shopping locally.
Everyone has a role to play and it starts
at itstimecanterbury.co.nz.
We’re here to help you understand, manage and prepare for more changes Canterbury is likely to face in the future.
Because as well as taking action to reduce the impacts of climate change, we need to ready ourselves to adapt to them.
Full steam ahead for Kia’s Stonic
MOST NEW car distributors
these days will tell you supply
is awkward due to the ongoing
effects of Covid-19 and shipping
delays.
Production of semi-conductors
and other electronic componentry
is well below demand and
that has meant headaches for
the automobile industry. Due
to shortages of these products,
manufacturers simply can’t build
enough cars, and sales are also
on the rise which compounds the
situation.
One company that is weathering
the storm relatively well is
Kia, and Kia in New Zealand is
maintaining good market position.
A lot of that has to do with
the introduction of the Stonic, a
small sport utility vehicle that has
often topped sales in that part of
the market. I guess that is helped
a little by the withdrawal of the
Sportage due to supply issues, a
wait for the Sportage will mean
that when the new generation
model lands here later in the year,
forward orders will buy you into
that variant.
That aside, the Stonic joins a
multitude of small SUVs that
have landed recently including
Ford’s Puma, Toyota’s Yaris Cross
and a revamped Suzuki Ignis, to
name just some.
The Stonic lands here in five
variants with two engine options.
The range starts at $22,990 for the
base model LX with a 1.4-litre,
four-cylinder engine, an extra $5k
will buy you into a mid-range EX
while the Limited specification
model, as tested, lands at $29,990.
In contrast, there’s the option of
a three-cylinder turbocharged
1-litre GT Line unit that lists
at $31,990, and a GT Line+ at
$33,990.
If these driveline options look
familiar, yes, they are pretty much
as what is specified for the Rio
range. The Stonic is based on the
Rio platform, yet it has higher
ground clearance and it is taller.
That’s why it slots into the SUV
category, it also has a chubby,
muscular, wagon-type body style.
Bear in mind though, the Stonic
is just front-wheel-drive, it’s
not a vehicle designed for crosscountry
travel but it does serve its
design concept well, it is an urban
commuter and exudes capable
highway travel. It will also satisfy
in an everyday role, access is easy,
and for someone with old bones
like mine, that is important, along
with a comfortable ride.
Coming from the modern
Korean factories, the Stonic
is chock-full of specification
although there is one minor
omission in the Limited model
that would have me looking at the
mid-spec LX for purchase. The
Limited has leather seat coverings
but there are no seat heaters.
While I appreciate the cost has
EASY ACCESS: The Stonic’s elevated ride height makes it
an attractive purchase for those not so agile.
KIA STONIC LIMITED: Small sport utility vehicle based on Rio platform.
been kept down for desirability,
those seats aren’t inviting when
a cold Canterbury frost hits. The
LX has cloth trim.
Elsewhere, though, there is all
the kit to satisfy, satellite navigation,
radar cruise control and a
raft of safety kit that comes under
the guise of advanced driver
assistance systems. There are no
surprises there, but to say the
Stonic gets a heap of kit to keep
you out of trouble and to protect
you if the worst case scenario
evolves.
Under the bonnet, the 1.4-litre
engine and smooth-shifting sixspeed
automatic transmission are
all traditional, and that is a good
thing, I like a little bit of simplicity
in vehicles and the driveline
in the Stonic is set-up well for its
role.
Kia claims power outputs of
74kW (6000rpm) and 133Nm
(4000rpm), even though they are
generated tall in the rev band the
engine doesn’t work hard. The
Stonic weighs in at just under
1.2-tonne, so there isn’t a lot of
demand on the engine. Power is
willing across the rev band and
it is generated smoothly without
much fuss. For the record, the
Stonic in this form will accelerate
to 100km/h in 11sec and make
120km/h from 80km/h in 7sec.
On the subject of figures,
the four-cylinder Stonic also
fares well in the fuel usage area.
• Price – Kia Stonic Limited,
$29,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4140mm; width, 1760mm;
height, 1520mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1368cc, 74kW,
133Nm, six-speed
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 11sec
• Fuel usage – 6.7l/100km
Kia also claims a 6.7-litre per
100km/h combined cycle average.
On my long highway run through
Mid-Canterbury the instantaneous
readout was constantly listing
at around 4.4l/100km (engine
speed 2400rpm at 100km/h),
and when I took the evaluation
car back to the dealership a
7.2l/100km average was showing
on the readout.
On the open road the Stonic
travels quietly with little wind
noise and thorough sound-proofing
underneath.There is a solid
feel of communication through
the steering, the high grade
205/55 x 17in Continental tyres
send all the right messages to the
driver and provide direct steering
accuracy.
Steering input is quick and
reactive, while the entire body
structure feels balanced and controlled
through the suspension.
Incidentally, the latter is a
front-strut/rear-torsion beam
design. Even though the rear
wheels are tied together through
the beam there is just the right
amount of movement on each
side to deal with uneven surfaces.
The spring and damper rates
are biased towards firm, which
helps contain gravitational movement,
but they are not so hard
that occupant comfort is jeopardised,
especially in the rear where
the seats are supportive and
cocooning.
Even though the Stonic is
compact, there is satisfactory leg
and head room all through the
model. There are three seat belts
in the rear and for three adults
there wouldn’t be too much of a
squeeze.
As much as I enjoyed the
evaluation, I’d like to have a drive
in the three-potter, I recall that
engine from the Rio and I can
report it is absolutely delightful.
I’m always happy to report
when a friend buys a new car.
When the Stonic was destined for
our market an acquaintance put
her name down early for one. She
has since received that car and is
delighted with the purchase.
With that type of feedback it’s
no surprise why Stonic sales are
elevated, it’s my hope that supply
is maintained so that others like
my friend can enjoy an affordable
and desirable SUV experience.
rolleston business hub
Jones Road and Industrial Zone
Do you get your car regularly
serviced? You should
Almost everyone has a car these days, and
some people have two or three. Others adore
classic cars and are keen to get them up and
running but not sure where to start. Not
everyone knows what they need to be doing
to take care of their vehicles properly. Many
people simply forget to book a service, and
because a quality service can be expensive
others think that to save money they’ll skip
servicing altogether, when that’s the worst
thing you can do—and it can be costly.
Organise a service schedule
Servicing your car isn’t just changing the
oil and getting new filters. Your car needs a
proper look-over by trained professionals
who understand things like modern onboard
computers, and emissions gears. Without it,
you’ll run into problems like brakes wearing
out or your car overheating from a broken
fan belt. Regular clients at Rolleston Diesel
and Petrols often plan a servicing schedule
that considers the mechanics, and the cost.
When cost becomes the question, alternatives
are sourced but they won’t compromise on
quality. And they’ll always provide options
and advice on the best solution that works for
you.
Get the most out of your car
If you’re after a one-stop shop for all your
car maintenance needs, Rolleston Diesel
and Petrols is the place to go. Booking in
for regular servicing can cut the day-today
running costs, improve fuel efficiency,
and reduce general wear and tear. Modern
vehicles require a good deal more care (like
manufacturers often requiring specialist oil
to run properly), so a good plan is to book in
for an annual ‘big’ service, with regular small
services in between to keep on top of things.
And preventative maintenance is better than
breaking down.
Experts who guarantee their
workmanship
Rolleston Diesel and Petrols can do trucks,
cars, servicing, fleet work, boats, brakes,
wheel alignments, suspension work, batteries,
cambelts and WOFs and they work with
clients from all over Christchurch and Selwyn.
They’re experts at what they do, provide an
honest and reliable service —and they 100%
guarantee their workmanship.
If you want to know how they can help or
have questions about what you need help
with, call them on 03 347 7110 or visit their
workshop at 839 Jones Road, Rolleston.
Issue 3 - WINTER 2021
Kia ora
The crisp mornings and bright days of
winter are upon us, not long now until
the shortest day later in June. Thank
you all for the positive feedback about
this newsletter, I trust it’s useful to hear
about the many things happening across
Waikirikiri Selwyn and what our Council is
doing to improve our wellbeing. If you’d
like to know more our Council website is
a great place to start or you can follow
me at facebook.com/samforselwyn for my
very latest news. Over time you will see
the name Waikirikiri used more frequently
to refer to our District. The name has
recently been confirmed to us by mana
whenua as the te reo name for the District
as well as the river.
Sam
Snow on our doorstep
The white capped peaks of our Southern Alps signal that the winter sport season is just around the
corner. Here in Waikirikiri Selwyn we have six awesome snow sports fields for skiers and boarders of every
standard, from complete beginner to those who want to push the limits that our maunga have to offer.
Our ski fields are only a short drive from your home no matter where you live in our District. You can be
having a coffee in Kirwee and be carving at Cheeseman in just over an hour. But the ski fields are not just
for skiers, there are plenty of opportunities for the whole family to have fun. All six of our fields have catering
facilities so you can grab a coffee and a bite to eat while the kids sledge in the snow or build a snowman.
Each field has stunning scenery, friendly staff and great instructors. However if chilling out is your thing there
are sun traps to simply enjoy the view, and if you’re lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a cheeky kea
who have taken to visiting the Porters sun deck.
All but one of our fields have on-mountain accommodation and for a truly unique overnight mountain
experience ‘The Top Hut’ at Mount Olympus, at 1,600 metres, offers an opportunity to ski in and out of an
awesome spot which boasts the nation’s highest hot tub. If you don’t fancy a night in the snow there are
plenty of other places to stay in our many townships.
It’s a fun road trip up the mountain and home again. Stop for one of Darfield’s famous monster size icecreams,
a Sheffield pie or a donut in Springfield. Our maunga are ready so why not start planning your visit
now, keep it local, the fun is right on our doorstep.
Cats and dogs
With over 15,000 dogs Waikirikiri has one of the
highest rates of dog ownership in the country
and our wee dog Lev enjoys adding my family to
that statistic. Here at Council we’ve been working
hard to make pet ownership simpler and safer for
the families and their pets, and for the protection
of our biodiversity.
An artist’s impression of the completed Reconnect Project
The Reconnect Project
Our Council has put climate change at the heart
of its work and has adopted its first formal climate
change policy. We want to go further and make
it simple and convenient for us all to play a part
in preserving our environment. One of the key
areas where we can all make a difference is
in thinking about our personal household and
business waste. If you’ve been to the Pines
Resource Recovery Park recently you will have
noticed many changes. We are turning this facility
into a centre of excellence that will increase our
capacity to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste
and work towards a minimum waste culture.
The Reconnect Project is about offering an
alternative to living in a disposable society and
making it convenient and fun at the same time.
At the heart of the project will be our reuse shop
where preloved and upcycled items can be sold
to the public. There will also be an education
centre with on-site staff who will offer tours and
education sessions, bringing the subject to life
with demonstrations of great waste management
in action.
A later stage will include the development of
micro enterprise units for upcycling items donated
or recovered from the waste stream and we’ll also
create a new community garden. The units and
garden will connect people with artisan skills or
green fingers as we look at new and innovative
ways of treating resources that are currently
considered waste.
This year we are increasing the number of
Malvern and Ellesmere waste days for community
bulk waste drop off. These days have been
well used and the extra days each year will now
provide more convenience.
Thank you for what you are currently doing
to reduce your own waste. Our recycling
contamination is currently only at 3%, with no
recycling loads having to be dumped in landfill
last month. Let’s keep learning and improving our
recycling practice.
You can connect with the climate
change conversation in Canterbury at
www.itstimecanterbury.co.nz.
Many of our native birds are under threat from
wild cats which are found across most of Selwyn.
Cat traps catch both feral and domestic cats.
The last thing we want is for somebody’s pet to
be put to sleep if it’s caught in a trap, but without
a microchip is can be hard to determine which
ones are feral. From July 2022 you’ll need to
have your cat microchipped, although you can
do it now to avoid the rush. It’s all part of being a
responsible pet owner.
We know it can be a hassle replacing your
dog’s plastic registration tag each year, so we’re
introducing a New Zealand first – a metal tag
designed to last your dog’s lifetime, for as long as
they’re registered in Waikirikiri. They’re light and
durable and have space on the back for you to
engrave your dog’s name. You’ll still need to jump
online and pay your annual registration fee. We
currently go through thousands of these plastic
tags each year, so the new system is more
sustainable. We know how much your pets mean
to you so we want to make the whole process of
owning them as easy as we can.
We’ve opened an
off-leash dog park in
Darfield and are keen
to hear from you about
where you’d like to
see more of these well
used parks. I want
to say a huge thank
you to all responsible
owners who clean up
after their pets; it makes
a huge difference to the
enjoyment of our public
spaces for all.
Selwyn Sports Centre
Eight years ago a visionary former New Zealand
cricketer, John Reid, came to our Council with
a proposal for a new sports centre to meet the
needs of our growing population. Our community
loved his idea and a dedicated team of people
have worked with passion and ingenuity to deliver
the magnificent new 8,000m 2 centre that opened
its doors on Foster Park a few weeks ago. It was
a privilege to have Sir Richard Hadlee to help cut
the ribbon, especially as he personally knew John
Reid who sadly passed away a short time before
the centre opened. John’s legacy lives on in the
centre as the main woodensprung sports courts
are named after him.
With eight indoor courts, a 240m indoor walking
track, a spin suite, rooms for fitness classes and
a state of the art interactive sports wall, the centre
has already established itself as another jewel in
the crown of Selwyn’s sporting facilities.
Classes are already booking up; there’s a full range
on offer from basic fitness classes to independent
sessions such as mature and motivated, zumba,
baby gym, box fit and yoga to name just a few.
Selwyn netball, Selwyn united football, local schools
and the Selwyn Sports Trust will be among the
key users, and regional and South Island-wide
tournaments are already booked.
If you want to find out more have a look at the
Selwyn Sports Centre website or simply pop in
and have a look around; it’s an amazing place,
and it’s yours.
Update
From Shane Epiha
Tena ra tatou katoa e Waikirikiri/Selwyn.
There was a resounding call from the people
of Ellesmere for a new community centre and
library in Leeston, and I’m proud that, with my
fellow Councillor Murray Lemon, I have been
part of including this facility in our 10-year plan.
There are a number of other developments
in the plan that will allow the ward to grow
sustainably and to continue to protect our
taonga Te Waihora.
Initiatives like free Te Reo lessons driven by Glen
Cameron and Ara, the continued development
of Kaupapa Kohanga reo in Rolleston and the
multi-cultural community initiatives within our
local parishes are some
of the things that also
make me honored to
serve my community.
fourteen young people from all around the district
are learning on the job via projects like how to
plan and run an event, finance and funding, mahi
for newcomers to Selwyn. They even submitted
their youth engagement findings around the
proposed Leeston Community Centre to the
Council’s Long-Term Plan, and recently met a Kea
