HUGH CANARD has been on
a four-decade mission to save
New Zealand’s rivers.
Megan
A passion for water conservation
evolved during his childhood
when all his favourite
rivers that he loved to swim
and kayak in were turned into
lakes to make way for dams.
Questioning everything ever
since, he dedicated his life to
ensuring people and authorities
are honest about the consequences
of their actions on the
environment. And it was why
the Spreydon resident was made
Research
shows
high tide
increase
NEW RESEARCH has found
the biggest increase in high tide
levels across Christchurch is at
the Ferrymead Bridge.
The maximum increase was
84mm.
This, alongside other new
high tide statistics, has provided
the city council with a greater
understanding of the flood risk
in Christchurch’s tidal areas.
Engineering consultancy GHD
Christchurch, in collaboration
with Netherlands-based flood
risk experts HKV, put the
statistics together using advanced
analysis that looks at sea level
influences.
These include weather patterns,
such as significant rainfall events,
sea-level rise, and the effects of
wind and waves on the sea. The
companies were commissioned
by the city council, which hopes
to understand the frequency
of high water levels at various
locations around the city.
The research shows a slightly
higher water level for most
high tide levels than was
calculated when the statistics for
Christchurch were last reviewed
in 2018.
HIRING: Te Pou Toe Toe: Linwood Pool is seeking staff ahead of its opening later this year. An artist’s impression shows what
the pool will look like (top right), with construction well under way.
STAFF ARE being sought for
the new Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood
Pool, which is due to open later
this year.
The $22 million facility on
the corner of Smith St and Linwood
Ave will have a multi-use
25-metre lane pool, a deep water
splash pool, a family spa pool, a
learn-to-swim pool, and a pool
and water deck for toddlers.
Said city council head of
recreation, sports and events
Nigel Cox: “We are looking
for lifeguards, swim education
instructors, recreation tutors,
group fitness and aqua fitness
instructors, and customer experience
representatives who can
help ensure that people using the
facility get the most out of their
visit.”
A drop-in session will be
held at Linwood Library today
(4-6pm) to discuss roles for anyone
thinking of applying.
The new pool will also have
community meeting rooms and
a kitchen, while outside there
will be picnic tables, tennis and
multi-use courts, cycle stands,
parking and plenty of open areas.
City council head of three
said tide levels are monitored
as they provide information for
computer modelling, which helps
to determine recommended
minimum floor levels for new
developments.
It also helps
to determine
design levels
Memoranda and other technical
work, such as the assessment of
risk from coastal hazards.
Said Beaumont: “Properties
that are already close to a current
considered to be at risk of a onein-50-year
flood as a result of the
new information.”
Making sure rivers are ‘flowing free’
•From page 1
Canard joins five others
from the Southern View area
also recognised on Monday.
“I’m really thrilled and
thankful for all the people I
met along the way and supported
me,” he said.
Canard was president of
Whitewater New Zealand Inc
from 1980 to 1990 and has
been its patron since 1992.
He is a member of the
Canterbury Regional Water
Committee and contributed
to policy forums, providing
guidance to members responsible
for representing the
interests of paddle sports, river
recreation and conservation
throughout New Zealand.
Canard has also led hundreds
of amateur kayaking
and rafting trips for the Canterbury
Whitewater Club.
Over the past 40 years, he
has been instrumental in
securing Water Conservation
Orders on the Kawarau, Buller,
Grey, Rangitata and Mohaka
rivers.
But it did not stop there – he
has either been a member or
chairman of numerous organisations
nationwide, including
the Nelson-Marlborough
Conservation Board, National
Water Strategy Working
ADVENTURE: Hugh Canard takes on some rapids along the Waiatoto River on the
West Coast.
Group, and the Packrafting
Association of New Zealand.
Canard developed certificates
and codes of practice
for the Sea Kayak Operators
Association, which he helped
establish, and helped purchase
land by the Buller River in
order to retain public access.
But most of all, his proudest
achievement was “the fact that
some really big rivers are still
there and flowing free” and
having a hand in making sure
it stays that way.
He said it has become much
easier than it was 20 years ago
to have conversations with
people like irrigators around
taking care of waterways. He
said society is starting to care
more about the natural world.
“There’s no money in leaving
a river alone,” said Canard.
“We all drink water and
flush the toilet, so we need to
think about where it comes
from, the consequences of our
actions and be honest about
them.”
Disability chief, principal and refugee
advocate among those recognised
• From page 5
•David Matthews,
Cashmere, Companion of
the Queen’s Service Order
Matthews has been recognised
for services to people with
disabilities.
He spent 10 years in senior
management roles with Special
Education Services and the past
21 years with CCS Disability
Action. Matthews has been chief
executive of CCS since 2011,
maintaining the organisation’s
positive reputation across the
disability sector and increasing
the fiscal position of CCS without
reducing staff or services.
Under his leadership, many
innovative initiatives have taken
place, including in Northland the
‘Karanga Maha – Many Voices’
marae-based support programme
for Māori disabled people, a
work programme model now
taken up by other CCS branches
nationally.
He oversaw the development of
intensive wrap-around services for
disabled children with complex
needs across New Zealand. As
CCS regional manager for South
Island, he focused on the use of
new technologies, access and
advocacy.
Matthews has been a past board
member with the New Zealand
Disability Support Network
and involved with many other
influential working groups,
including the 2016 New Zealand
Disability Strategy Revision
reference group, the Disability
Systems Transformation and
Enabling Good Lives projects.
He supported CCS Canterbury
to continue its work following the
February 22, 2011 Christchurch
earthquake and deferred his retirement
to 2021 to ensure continuity
and leadership during the 2020
Covid-19 response.
Matthews has had an active
involvement with the International
Initiative for Disability Leadership.
•Margaret Dodds, Halswell,
Member of the New
Zealand Order of Merit
Dodds has been honoured for
services to special education.
She has been an active and
dedicated member of Special
Education New Zealand, having
been team leader of special
education in several high schools
and principal of Waitaha Special
School from 2008 to 2018.
As principal of Waitaha, Dodds
was jointly responsible, with
the principal of Lemonwood
Grove, in establishing the new
Lemonwood Grove full primary
and Waitaha special education
schools’ side-by-side.
She played a key role in relocating
Waitaha to a new purposebuilt
facility in Rolleston in 2018,
with four satellite provisions
across four other mainstream
schools. She ensured her students
had an everyday school experience,
introducing new curriculum,
school dances, camps and
inter-school sports, and created
an innovative sensory-motor
therapy room designed to meet
students’ sensory needs, enhance
self-regulation and develop motor
functions.
Dodds ensured that students’
best interests were the core of all
decisions, and had an open-door
policy for staff and whānau,
ensuring they received the support,
resources and information
available to help their students
achieve.
After retiring in 2018, Dodds
was called upon by the Ministry
HONOURED: David Matthews and Margaret Dodds have
been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
of Education on two occasions
due to her leadership skills to
cover primary school principal
roles at short notice.
•Habib Marwat, Woolston,
Queen’s Service Medal
Marwat has been honoured for
services to Muslim and ethnic
communities.
Marwat has volunteered in
Marwat has held various roles
Canterbury, including time as
president and councillor with the
Federation of Islamic Association
of New Zealand. He has helped
initiate and assisted with sports
events for youth from ethnic
communities.
He has co-led organising an
ethnic girl’s/women’s sports programme
and worked on improving
Canterbury Sunday cricket
to empower ethnic youth and
bring multi-ethnic communities
together through sports.
He assisted in introducing
affordable Iftar programmes
for the Canterbury Muslim
community during Ramadan in
Masjid Al Nur.
Marwat actively supports
refugees settling in New Zealand.
He is employed by the
working relationships between
organisations
amongst ethnic communities
nationally.
Marwat was instrumental in
organising numerous meetings
for the prime minister and
community, and held a key
role in organising hui with
the community on the Royal
Commission of Inquiry Report
following the March 15, 2019
terror attack. He worked to
connect victims of the terror
attack with services and
direct queries from families to
appropriate forums.
Marwat is active in the
AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
Customers pleased with honest,
reliable vehicle servicing
Having your vehicle regularly serviced is
key to getting the best out of it in terms of
fuel efficiency and reduced wear and tear
on expensive parts.
Kevin, who owns and operates Parker
Automotive in Birmingham Drive,
provides full vehicle servicing to keep your
vehicle running smoothly, as well as WOFs,
batteries and tyres.
He also carries out all mechanical repairs,
including cam belt replacement, suspension
work, clutch and gearbox repairs, only
repairing what’s necessary, and without
charging the earth.
He has owned the business since 2007,
and over that time has established a loyal
customer base – people that rely on him
to give them sound advice and provide
professional care and servicing for their
vehicles.
Customers come from across the city,
Spreydon, Hillmorton, Riccarton, Halswell
and Middleton areas, and the business has
received many positive Google reviews
from customers. Below are some examples:
I have been going to Parker Automotive
for the last eight years and I cannot fault the
service. The mechanical work has been top
notch! If you want top service and value for
money I recommend Parker Automotive. –
basic servicing and warrants through to
major work like clutches, replacement
coilovers and bushings. Kevin is a very
honest guy who gets the job done in a very
timely manor and he has outstanding
communication. The overall service I’ve
received is excellent. – Lachlan Poole
I know it’s not always about price but
sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs,
you just want a perceived good deal and work
carried out by someone who seems to care.
Kevin came recommended by a friend, and
what a great recommendation. His work was
clean, efficient, fast and came in under what
I thought it was going to cost. So we took my
partner’s car there two days later and that
too was completed faster than we expected
and at an almost unbelievable cost.
Give Parker Automotive a shot next
time you need something done. Kevin
is a nice fella too, win win. – Mark
Lewis
Earlier this year, Parker Automotive
moved from premises on the Lincoln
and Torrens roads corner to a new site
at 23B Birmingham Drive, Middleton.
Opening hours are Monday to
Friday 7.30am-4pm, Saturday 8am-
