Passion drives team to victory By ABIGAIL CHESSUM Anna Menzies led her troupe of five dancersonajourney up and downthe South Island to qualifyfor anational competition, and succeeded. The young artistic director, who runsthe North Canterbury SchoolofDance, will now take her dancers to PalmerstonNorthinOctober for the Performing Arts Competitions Association New Zealand (PACANZ) nationals. Anna has seen many competitions over the years, but qualifying was special for the passionate20yearold danceteacherfrom Amberley. Her five dancers from the school, Tessa and Kaylee Moffat, Saki and Hikaru Takaoand Jessica Lennan, all aged 14 to 17, jumped at the chance to compete. They went to Motuekafor a regional qualifier, but were unsuccessful. This didn’t stop them from tryingagain,atthe Oamaru qualifier in May, wherethey secured aspot in the national competition with theirdance, FeverBreak. Anna choreographed the dance, which tells astory aboutrage. She also made the costumes, basing the dance on the lyrics of the song, Fever Break.Itisacontemporary piece, technical and mature, with minimalist costumes. As ayoung girl, Anna used The troupe ... She decided, when the opportunity arose, to go on to be artistic directorofthe danceschool. ‘‘It’s my love (teaching dance). It was exactly what I wanted and whenthe opportunity arose(to take over the dance school), it just felt right. ‘‘Also, Iwas so youngI wasn’t cutting off any decisions.Ican still goand danceifIwant to in acouple of years,’’ she says. Through her ongoing passion for dance, andher goal in seeing her students shine, she has the pleasureof instillingthe same big dreams in her dancers by giving them the PACANZ national stage. ‘‘It’s huge for the girls to go up and be surrounded by such incredible talentupthere. It will be the best of the best, really,’’ she says. PACANZ covers all art forms, from dance to drama and music. For adance troupeto qualify, they have to face all dance styles, from ballet to hiphop to highland. Withso muchdiversity,the qualifying rounds only become more difficult. Anna’s dancers can expect to go up against more than100 dance troupes in the national competition. NEWS North Canterbury News, June 10, 2021 35 Abbeyfield proposal Asteering group has been established to consider thecreation of an Abbeyfield House in the Waimakariri district. Abbeyfield New Zealandisa volunteerrun charity which provides supported, independent living for older New Zealanders. It has 14 houses throughout New Zealand, including two in Christchurch and one in Selwyn. Each house is afamilystyle home, close to local amenities and with 12 to 14 residents. Residents have their own studio unit with ensuite and usually a patio and garden. There are sharedareas and facilities including dining, lounge, laundry and gardens. Ahousekeeper/cook is employed to provide two cooked mealsaday and a selfservice breakfast, keep communal areas tidy, and support residents. Agroup of nine local people have been meeting to discuss the possibility of establishing ahouse in Waimakariri and have applied to the Abbeyfield board to setupaformal steering group. Rangiora resident Valda Reveley, who has experience with Abbeyfield, will chair the steering group. The steering group is looking for ideas, including whether topurchase, rent or collaborate with owners. The group is starting out with no budget and welcomes any fundraising ideas.
