Hello there again!

When we speak of frontliners, it’s difficult not to think of a particular group of

individuals, and they are, nurses. There has always been a misconception that one

becomes a nurse when they fail to become a doctor, like it’s the second choice or

something. Nothing can be further away from the truth! Nurses are known to be so

hardworking and yet under-appreciated, simply because they are generally seen as

‘beneath’ their doctors, in terms of occupation. They perform all the groundwork, as

in helping to prepare patients for procedures and treatments; help patients who are

unable to move/eat/urinate/defecate on their own; care for patients in clinics as well

as in the wards, ensure patients adhere to currents SOP’s; and the list goes on and

on. They are also exceptionally vulnerable to abuse too, by impatient or fussy

patients, for example. Come what may, nurses are expected to carry out their duties

without complaining, when there is a lot to complain about. Although it’s not often

regarded as a glamorous job, when you think of it, nurses should rightly be the star

of the show, so to speak. They literally keep a hospital or clinic running in great

order, by doing what they do. In this issue, Natural Health cornered three nurses,

including a male one, and listened to what they had to say about their jobs - read

all about it inside!

We have a whole lot of other exciting topics too, waiting inside here just for you.

Whether you’re a health freak or a beauty enthusiast, there’s always something for

everyone in your monthly issue of Natural Health, so enjoy!

Till we meet again next month,

Much love!

NATURAL & Beauty

Bare-Faced And

Naturally Beautiful

This Could Be You!

Who among us has never entertained the fantasy of being a

natural beauty, with a complexion to die for and to never need

the help of heavy cosmetics to hide behind? Oooh, what a

dream, isn’t it? But what if we were to tell you now that you can,

with a bit of patience and a strong will power, make this dream

into a reality? That’s right, so read on and be inspired.

Our Right To Be Beautiful

As women, it is our right to be beautiful.

While we are all aware of the old

adage that beauty is in the eye of the

beholder, we also know that certain

factors such as cleanliness, healthy

skin, as well as a pleasant disposition

all contribute to a person’s all-around

attractiveness. Hence, it doesn’t

necessarily have to be only about

pretty features, hair length or color,

or, even makeup! As long as we’re in

the right frame of mind to understand

what true beauty is all about, we can

work towards being a dazzling, natural

beauty, in the eyes of everyone!

Here are simple yet effective steps

to take now, as you set off on this

journey towards true and lasting

natural beauty.

Exfoliate!

If beautiful skin is what you’re after,

you cannot afford to skip this action,

for it’s the quickest and most effective

way to rid your skin of dead and dull

cells, and make way for fresh new

ones! Use a mild one if you wish to

exfoliate daily, and keep a more heavy

duty one for a weekly scrub!

Try this:

Nano White Polishing

Renewal Exfoliator: Helps to

rid the skin of blackheads and

removes dead skin cells - Just

massage for a minute for debris

to surface in tiny lumps, and

wash off! Also contains a natural

antioxidant, Idebenone to fight

off signs of aging.

Stay well hydrated, always

Drink up! Stick to a minimum of eight

glasses of water (more on hotter

days), to help your body eliminate

wastes as well as toxins more

effectively. Water, may we remind you,

also keeps your skin looking fresher,

livelier, plumper, and naturally dewy.

Use A Night

Moisturizer, Diligently!

Make the most of your sleeping

time with a good night cream

which suits your skin type.

While you sleep, your skin is

repairing and rejuvenating itself,

so why not give it a hand with a

nourishing, deeply moisturising

product? Use it each night

before bed and soon you’ll be

waking up looking and feeling

naturally beautiful.

Here’s one to try:

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter

Formula with Vitamin E

Moisture Rich Night Cream:

Made with natural Cocoa Butter,

Retinol and Vitamin E, you can

look forward to smoother, more

youthful skin with nightly use!

Eat this, not that

Healthwise, you are what you eat.

Beautywise however, your skin is

what you feed it. So, start tucking

in all those healthy, beautifying

fruits, greens, nuts, seeds, whole

grains, high quality meat and fish,

lentils and tubers. Foods that help

strengthen and protect your skin

should contain lots of vitamins,

minerals, proteins and fatty acids.

One fool-proof way to go about

this is to ensure you’re getting in

all the colours of the rainbow on

your plate, each day, every day!

Just as important, stay away from

sugary snacks, deep fried foods,

and foods containing saturated

fats. These are hardly ever from

the naturally colorful food groups

anyway, are they?

Drink Green Tea

Everyday

Green tea is rich in ‘catechins’, a

form of antioxidants that boosts

blood circulation, bringing more

nutrients to your skin. It also helps

to prevent cell damage, which in

turn, keeps your skin healthy and

much better looking!

Never Neglect Your

Neck!

Aren’t we all guilty of this, that

is, to forgo our neck area when

we’re busy cleansing, toning,

moisturising, etc? Well, from now

on, in the name of natural, true

beauty, let’s change that! Make

neck care an integral part of your

beauty regime, and start showing

off your well cared for decolletage!

Here’s what we’re

checking out:

Dermalogica

Neck Fit Contour

Serum: This

lightweight, rollon

serum, with its

Flex Lift Contour

Technology helps to

smoothen out fine lines

and impart a visibly

lifted and sculpted

appearance when used

routinely.

NATURAL & Beauty

Behind a pretty smile

Taking great care of your pearly

whites is a must if you wish to achieve

and live out the status of natural

beauty. After all, have you ever seen

a beauty with stained or unsightly

teeth? Other than taking care of your

teeth by brushing and flossing, you

might also want to consider teeth

repair if you need them, for example,

if you have holes in your teeth, plaque

build-up, stains, ect. If braces are

what you need, then by all means, go

for it. In short, anything that will allow

you to smile with confidence,

that’s what you'll probably need

to do.

Brushing your teeth will be

a joy with this:

Dbruz Sonic Toothbrush:

With its sonic vibration,

this modern and sleep

toothbrush effectively deals

with plaque and stains left

behind by coffee and tartar

build-up. Available in two

variants: LUX and LITE.

The power of touch:

Massage your face

Using a good facial

massage cream or facial oil, pamper

your face with a good massage every

other day. Done right, it will help

to reduce the appearance of fine

lines and impart a naturally radiant

glow. If you’re unsure about facial

massage techniques, check out how

professionals do it on YouTube, and

before long, you’ll be quite the pro

yourself!

Mind your hair health (and style!)

No matter how busy you are, you should always find time to pamper your hair - wash,

condition, nourish, style. Your hair, after all, is part of your overall beauty. Choose a hairstyle

that suits your face, one that will make the most of your features, yet easy to maintain.

Here’s a shampoo worth trying out:

Tisserand Tea Tree+ Deep Cleansing Shampoo

A purifying shampoo enriched with tea tree oil, Rosemary oil as well as lemon oil for a head of

soft, shiny, healthy hair. Made with no synthetic fragrances, SLES or parabens.

Pretty Lips Can Be Yours

7 Best Lipbalms For Sexy,

Smoochable Lips!

Fact: No lipstick or lip gloss,

no matter how expensive

it is, can give you a sexy

pout, if your lips are in bad

shape. If your lips are dry,

cracked or chapped, it is

unlikely that your lip colour

will look good, or stay on

for long. In fact, your lips

may look worse off than

ever, especially when the

color bleeds or gets into

the cracks on your lip. As

much as we’d like to ignore

this fact, lip care is crucial

if you wish to have a pout

that turns heads! So, read

on to see how some TLC for

your lips can make a huge

difference.

We have very little oil

glands in our lips, hence

they tend to dry out

quickly. Our lips also

lack the ability to filter

out damaging UV rays,

which means that they are

virtually unprotected from

dryness as well as from the

sun’s UV rays. Dry air, sun,

wind all these spell trouble

for our lips, causing them

to chap, crack and peel.

Preventing the 3

C’s - Chapping,

Cracking, Cold sores.

Chapping

Almost everyone alive has

experienced this issue, for

it is the most common

of lip problems. Using a

good quality lip balm a

few times a day on a daily

basis will definitely help

keep this problem at bay.

It would be a bonus if your

lip balm contains Vitamins

A, C or E and AHAs, and

offers sun protection.

Cracking

This condition usually occurs

following over-exposure to

dry air, most often during the

night. To remedy this, try a

deep moisturising lip balm

prior to going to bed. In

addition to that, you can also

try using an air humidifier to

retain the air moisture levels

in your bedroom.

Cold Sores

Cold sores are mostly

brought about by viral

infections. If you happen to

have open scabs on your

lips, or if your lips look

blistered, you probably

are experiencing a bout of

cold sores. With cold sores,

the most common issue

is getting re-infected, for

it’s really easy to happen.

To prevent re-infections,

use cotton buds to apply

lip balm, lipstick or any

other lip products, without

dipping/touching the

product with the used bud.

Do this until the cold sores

have healed completely.

For any or all of the lip

problems mentioned

earlier, regular use of lip

balm will offer the fastest

remedy and relief. Lip balms

are generally made from

waxes and they may also

contain oils, such as jojoba

or olive oil. Some formulas

also contain menthol or

camphor to soothe raw,

exposed skin and stinging.

They may also contain skinhealing

ingredients such as

shea butter, aloe vera and

essential oils like lavender,

rose or ylang-ylang. These

days, many brands also

include sun protection

factors as well as an added

value to their product.

COOKING WITH SHOGUN IS

COOKING WITH CONFIDENCE!

Inspired by the military Elite leaders

that built, unified and took care of Japan

in the 1100's, the Shogun cookware in

turn inspires cooks to cook with

confidence. The renown cookware is

safe, healthy, provides great

conductivity of heat plus at least 50%

energy savings, and ultimately, results

in a joyful cooking experience.

The brand won the Diamond Award in

the Natural Health & Good Health

Readers’ Choice Awards 2020 for the

Cast Aluminium Cookware category. The

Diamond Award is awarded to brands

that have bagged the Readers’ Choice

Awards for three consecutive years or

more in the same category.

“Shogun has been in Malaysia since 20

years ago, gaining huge popularity over

the years due to the positive and

encouraging feedback from customers,”

shared Jean Yeap, the brand’s Managing

Director. “ Understanding the needs of

customers that have multiple roles from

working in the office, to rushing home

to cook for the family and looking after

the children, Shogun is constructed for

fast and tasty cooking. users will find

that each cookware is easy to wash and

easy to maintain, which serves the

requirement of busy moms with careers

as well as busy stay at home mothers,”

she explained.

Ms Yeap attributes the brand’s

resounding win to multiple factors,

including its ability to provide satisfying

and safe eco-cooking results. “Shogun

is made from approved materials from

Switzerland and Germany, and has been

providing Quality and Assurance of

Safety consistency over these 20 years.

The non-stick coatings used are from

international brands of highest repute

with approved certification from EU,

Swiss and USA in accordance with their

standards.” she shared with Natural

Health. “We provide the latest

innovation in terms of higher release

non-stick coating with improved

ceramic substrates. Apart from being

upgraded and improved to meet the

needs of our Asian customers, we also

hire the best professional chefs to use

and test the cookware, and get their

opinions to improve the cookware to

suit our Asian cooking.”

Awards Story

“Winning the Diamond award is a

testament to the ever-increasing

popularity and success story of Shogun.

The award is in part due to the assurance

of quality and performance of Shogun,

but mainly due to the huge support

given by the happy customers,” she

continued earnestly.

Shogun evidently stays ahead of

competition and has been winning over

customers’ trust over and over again.

This is due to a number of factors,

according to Ms Yeap. There is, firstly, an

assurance of safety, healthy cooking and

quality in their non-stick cookware, which

are more durable and long lasting. The

brand also innovates and looks forward

to continuously improving the quality,

the standard of durability, safety, and

design to meet the demands and the

changing needs of customers. Far from

merely focussing on their sales, Shogun

is known for its after sales service, and

for standing behind its guarantee. As

explained by Ms Yeap, they make it a

point to educate their point of sales and

customer service staff so that they can,

in turn, educate customers on the

benefits, usage and care of the Shogun

cookware they are purchasing. Last but

not least, they listen to the complaints

or suggestions from our customers. Plans

are also underway to provide interesting

recipes by engaging different celebrity

chefs and social media influencers.

In the new millennium, there are younger

couples living together, and families that

are smaller in numbers. Many live in

condominiums or smaller houses.

Shogun is aware of this, hence it aims to

provide smaller sets of cookware to serve

the changing needs as space becomes

limited in the kitchen.

“We will develop multilayer products that

can be stacked, occupying less space.

Apart from providing smaller sets for

millennials, these will also be suitable for

the aging population when the children

have moved out to build their own nest.

Shogun will continue to provide

innovation from cookware to kitchen

tools and kitchen gadgets that make

cooking a pleasure,” Ms Yeap revealed.

There is much joy in cooking with quality

cookware, and Ms Yeap is adamant

about this! “When you use quality

cookware such as Shogun to cook, due

to the thick cast aluminium, you avoid

burnt cooking, which is constantly the

case when cooking with the thinner

pressed cookware. Once you use

Shogun non-stick to cook, you will not

want to use the competitors’ cookware

as the feel and ease cannot be compared

to any other non-stick cookware, she

stated earnestly. “Using Shogun thick

cast aluminium non-stick cookware

provides a tasty result to your cooking

that you cannot do without. Easy to

cook, easy to use, great results, plus

easy to wash! Need I say more?”

Longer lasting non-stick capabilities with

proven abrasion durability has made

Shogun a chosen favourite. Once price

is forgotten, quality is remembered, which

results in customers returning to buy

more and also providing good referrals

as they trust and love Shogun!

Shogun believes in staying relevant to

today’s needs and our current world

situation. Knowing that climatic change

will affect the livelihood of all of us on

the planet, Shogun believes in embracing

Eco-living by providing cookware and

kitchen accessories that will be at least

50% energy saving. “ We will continue

to educate customers on their choices

in choosing the right cookware and

kitchen tools to suit their needs,” Ms

Yeap deduced.

ProbioKidz Me

The Joys Of Growing Up Healthy And Happy

It’s no secret that healthy kids are happy

kids. In fact, the essence of childhood

lies greatly on their health, for what could

be worse for children than being sickly

and unable to enjoy their day-to-day

lives? While we agree there are many

factors that may contribute to children’s

health and wellbeing, one factor that

cannot be denied is, a good quality

supplement that is designed to help keep

children in great shape, from the inside!

Launched in 2011, ProbioKidz ME by TCK

BON Sdn Bhd was created out of the

yearning to see, kids growing up healthy

and enjoying their childhood - an

exceptionally noble inspiration, we’re

inclined to find. The product has been

enjoying resounding success in the

market, being a top choice of parents

who wish to see their kids enjoy better

health and a more enriching childhood.

The esteemed brand was named the

Diamond Award winner in the category

of Kids' Probiotics in the Natural Health

& Good Health Readers’ Choice Awards

2020, an award bestowed to brands that

have bagged our Readers’ Choice Award

for three or more consecutive years.

Natural Health spoke to Leong Kah

Tong, the brand’s Sales Manager in

regards to this incredible feat, to which

he stated, “We are happy and proud

that Probiokidz ME has been named the

Diamond Award winner! Indeed, we are

glad that this high quality product is

used by families to bring up healthy

kids. This prestigious Award shows that

our product has gained the recognition

of the consumers in the market especially

among families with kids.”

Indeed, BON’s ProbioKidz ME is a boon

for the health and wellbeing of children.

Awards Story

Certified HALAL by Jakim, it offers a

simple and convenient way for parents

to help their children acquire better

gut health. Specifically formulated for

little ones, this tasty, vanilla-flavoured

probiotics contains a combination of two

imported strains of beneficial bacteria

(good bacteria) imported from Canada,

namely, Lactobacillus helveticus-Rosell

52 and Bifidobacterium longum

Rosell-175. These two strains are in a

balanced ratio that meets the

requirements for children, which aren’t

the same as what adults would need.

ProbioKidz ME also uses a patented ME

(Micro-Encapsulation) Technology,

which protects the two precious strains

from being destroyed by stomach acids,

which will compromise the quality of

the product.

Having won multiple awards in the past

years, Leong accredited this reverberating

success to the quality of the product itself,

being produced by a reputable probiotic

manufacturer, together with hard work

and the support of consumers in the

placement of ProbioKidz ME in the

market of kids’ health products. The

brand is also constantly improving on

their product and doing their level best

to meet consumers’ needs and latest

market trends.

Reputation and superior quality are

important traits that parents should look

out for when selecting a probiotics

supplement for their children, but that’s

not all! In selecting a good probiotic for

their children, Leong recommends

parents to choose a probiotic that is

specifically formulated for kids, which

translates to easier absorption and

digestion for their bodies. This, to us,

makes a lot of sense, as many parents,

even today, tend to make the mistake of

offering their own supplement products

to their children without realising the

possible implications such as improper

dosage, inadequate ingredients, possible

side-effects due to the strength of the

product, etc.

There are other traits that parents should

be aware of in the chosen probiotic, as

explained by Leong. One of them is the

use of microencapsulation technology.

This factor should not be overlooked for

it not only helps to safeguard the quality

of the probiotic content, but also, to

retain its flavourful taste so that kids will

love and enjoy taking it. Parents should

also consider a product’s ease of use. “

The chosen product should ideally be

convenient to take anytime, anywhere.

This way, it’ll be easy for kids and their

parents too,”

From where we’re standing, ProbioKidz

ME, by far, epitomises all these qualities

and more!

The future looks bright for BON as they

plan to further improve on existing

products and also bring in new offerings

to meet consumers’ needs and desires.

According to Leong, the brand intends

for their products to reach out to more

families and kids so that they can enjoy

a healthy lifestyle, with products that

cater from infancy until old age.

During the current pandemic, parents

everywhere are seeking ways to keep

their children in the best of health.

Besides following SOPs to keep safe,

Leong’s advice to them are, to provide

their children with supplements for the

nutrients that they lack. Parents should

also make an effort in providing their

children with supplements that can help

to strengthen and boost their immune

system. What could possibly be a better,

wiser choice than ProbioKidz ME, in

helping kids grow up healthy while

enjoying their childhood?

My Bowen Therapy:

Live your life to the fullest,

and pain-free!

“How long can you turn the music up in

the car to ignore unfamiliar squeaks and

noises from the engine etc.? If we see

our body in the same way, then it is easier

to understand that aches and pains could

also be seen as not normal. Your body

is trying to tell you something is not right,

just like the noise from a faulty engine

part. I do not subscribe that people have

to ‘learn to live with pain’ nor the heartbreaking

statement we hear daily; I was

told it was all in my head” was the

heartfelt statement of Lorna J Mair, Dip.

BT MFHT - Founder, My Bowen Therapy

in a recent interview with Natural Health.

Lorna came across Bowen Therapy in 2007

whilst her mother was suffering from

cancer. The improvement she and her

family witnessed in her mother’s pain was,

as she put it, jaw dropping, and from that

point she was adamant to find out more.

“I had never heard about this amazing

technique and couldn’t understand why,

until that time I had never heard of the

modality before. Well here we are now, 6

years since the opening of My Bowen

Therapy and the centre has grown from

a solo operation to a team of 11 including

9 therapists. Each day, myself and my team

find ourselves on a mission to show as

many people as possible the true potential

the body has to heal using a targeted

approach of Bowen Therapy,” she revealed.

My Bowen Therapy (MBT) was named

the Diamond Award Winner in the

Natural Health & Good Health Readers'

Choice Awards 2020, in the category of

Awards Story

Pain Relief Specialist, a feat to which an

elated Lorna exclaimed, “It’s an honour

to win the award for the past three years

running, and we are very grateful to your

readers for their nomination and support.

We pride ourselves on our service and

our super sensitive palpation skills which

takes a long time to perfect.”

According to Lorna, not one person that

has visited the centre, who has been told

that they’ll have to live with their pain,

or that the pain they’re experiencing is

all in their head, has been in perfect

alignment. On assessment, fascia pulls

are normally discovered.

It’s no mystery why the centre has

managed to capture the admiration and

trust of clients in need of relief. Everyone

who visits the centre, can see the passion

every member of the MBT team has for

sharing the amazing results of this

modality. As Lorna stated, “How can you

not be passionate about changing

people’s lives for the better? First and

foremost, we listen, ask questions, and

are interested in the whole person, not

just their diagnosis. It is very easy to get

caught up focusing entirely on findings

from an X-ray or MRI, and directing

treatment to the area of pain. When it

comes to musculoskeletal issues however,

the body MUST be looked at as an entire

structure and not compartmentalized.”

“We as the human race have separated

the human body into separate areas,

however the truth is, it’s all connected.

For instance, someone may come in with

neck and shoulder issues, however on

assessment their pelvis is misaligned and

the source of their fascia pull is actually

in their lower back. Myself and my team

of Physios, understand that in order to

offer the best effective treatment, the

body must be viewed as a whole,

regardless of the diagnosis or symptoms.

Treatment is targeted to all areas of

dysfunction that need assistance and not

just the localised area of pain,” she

continued to share with us all.

There are many options available to those

who wish to deal with physical pains, yet

as reflected by your consecutive wins for

the past years as best Pain Relief

Specialist, you have gained consumers'

trust. Please share with us the main

reasons for this?

Lorna and her highly skilled team not

only pride themselves on their customer

service but also due to the fact that they

can pick up on the subtlest of changes

and abnormalities in soft tissue, even

often finding damaged tissue from old

injuries acquired years, if not decades

before. “Some have even called this skill

our superpower, but l like to call it our

“Finger Eyes”, she shared.

As Lorna explained, no stone is left

unturned, regardless of the symptoms,

with every individual receiving the

treatment their body needs. MBT never

adopts a one size fits all attitude as one

person suffering from, for example sciatica,

may need a completely different treatment

than another with the exact same

symptoms. “As any good surgeon will

advise, surgery should be the last option,

and I would recommend anyone with

aches and pains to seek the assistance of

a soft tissue body worker, prior to opting

for more invasive procedures. Although

these procedures can bring relief,

sometimes the effects are sadly only

temporary as the root cause of the fascia

pull in the body has not been addressed.”

The growth of My Bowen Therapy since

opening in 2015 has been outstanding

with the therapy’s results speaking for

themselves. Most of the centre’s clients

visit through recommendation, however

unfortunately, there are still many people

out there who assume that surgery and/

or medication is their only option. Too

many are still unaware that their knee

issue could be due to a historic back

problem, or that their Plantar Fasciitis is

a symptom of prolonged neck pain. Lorna

and her team are aiming to educate

everyone who visits the centre, one

Spring Onions

Here’s why you should

learn to love them

Spring onions may be known by many names, such as

onion leaves, onion stalks, scallions or even green onions.

It is essentially an immature form of an onion, where

the leaves are used as garnishing or in salads and stirfries.

One thing’s for sure though, and that is, they are

a powerhouse of essential nutrients and they jazz up

boring dishes with a distinctive, peppery flavour. Unique,

healthy and tasty - if you are not yet a fan, we’re hoping

to convince you to become one now!

Spring onions are rich in essential nutrients like

Vitamins A, C, B2 or thymine, copper, phosphorus,

magnesium and potassium. They add great taste and

flavour to the dishes they are added in, although to

this day, it can be argued that when taken raw, it may

be an acquired taste. So now, why are they really good

for you and why should you learn to love them? Let’s

take a look.

• Keeps your eyes healthy! Spring onions are an

excellent source of carotenoids and Vitamin A, that

help in keeping the eyes healthy and prevent vision

problems.

• Prevents colds. Like many other herbs, spring onions

have antibacterial and antiviral properties that can

help fend off viral infections like cold.

• A healthy digestive aid. With its rich fibre content,

eating just a little raw spring onion leaves will aid

in your bowel movements, and let’s face it, who

doesn’t need help with that these days, right?

• Keeps your bones healthy and strong. With its rich

calcium and Vitamin K content, spring onions are

helpful in keeping your bones healthy and strong.

• For a healthy tummy. Spring onions have been

known to be a natural remedy to prevent diarrhoea

and other stomach complications because of their

antiviral and antibacterial properties.

• For boosted immunity! Loaded with Vitamins A and

C, munching on some spring onions will help keep

your immune system strong to fight off diseases.

• A heart-healthy herb. The abundance of antioxidants

in spring onions are likely to aid in fighting the free

radicals that places us at risk of heart diseases.

• Protects against tissue damage. As a rich source of

Vitamin C, which is an antioxidant, eating spring

onions on a regular basis will help to protect the

body tissues from damage and inflammation.

FOOD & Nutrition

Just Beet It!

The Purple Root of Power

Beetroots have been gaining popularity among the health conscience as a

healing and health-enhancing superfood. Its rich dark purplish hue adds a

visual appeal to any dish that includes it, such as salads and stir-fries. Steamed

beetroot is a firm favourite of many, for it retains the sweet flavour of the

beet while rendering it more tender to the bite. They may be all the rage now,

but they are in no way a newcomer to the health food scene, being used for

hundreds of years to treat inflammation, troubled skin, blood issues, etc.

Here are some health benefits you

could enjoy just by adding beets into

your diet, if not daily, then perhaps

twice a week at least!

• With its known high concentration

of nitrates, daily consumption of

beetroots may result in a blood

pressure-lowering effect, and in turn,

a reduced risk of heart problems.

• Beets contain pigments called

betalains, which are now believed

to possess a number of antiinflammatory

properties

• Consumption of beets have been

shown to improve blood flow to

the frontal lobe of the brain, in

particular, resulting in marked

improvements in memory, decision

making and higher-level thinking.

• Delicious, versatile and easy to

incorporate into your daily or

weekly diet plan.

• The antioxidant content and antiinflammatory

nature of beets have

experts and scientists now looking

into its ability to prevent cancer.

Beetroot juice: Drink up

and enjoy these benefits!

• Natural detoxifier

• Healthy, glowing skin

• Helps to manage

blood pressure

• Lowers blood

glucose

• Boost of energy

• For better digestive

health

• Anti-inflammatory

• Eating beetroot or drinking

beetroot juice regularly helps to

cleanse and detoxify the liver

• Beets have a high water and low

calorie content, hence are beneficial

for weight loss. If you wish to lose a

few pounds, well, just beet it!

• Eating beets 2-3 hours prior

to training or competing may

help improve the efficiency of

mitochondria, which are responsible

for producing energy in cells,

hence improving one’s athletic

performance.

• Beets are a good source of fiber,

which is beneficial for digestive

health, and a crucial component of

a healthy diet.

What you get with every

100 grams of lightly

cooked beetroot:

Aromatherapy

Geranium

The Scent Of Good

Moods And Great Vibes

Stop and smell the roses, they say.

For one, it’s an excellent way to uplift

your mood almost instantly! As far as

essential oils are concerned however,

the rose can be quite expensive

and indulgent. So, why not try an

alternative which is just as good, and

some say, better, in terms of scent and

usability. Behold the geranium, also

known as the poor man’s rose.

Native to South Africa, geraniums are

a hit in the perfume industry today,

often substituting the more expensive

and luxurious rose. In aromatherapy,

one will find that geranium essential

oil produces a calming, uplifting and

strengthening effect, particularly

during times of anxiousness.

Geranium Is Known For Its

Emotional Healing Qualities,

Which Include:

RR

RR

For emotional regeneration

RR

To find a balance

RR

RR

A feeling of being shielded and

mothered.

The Differences Between

Geranium And Rose

Geranium

Is there a difference between

geranium oil and rose geranium

oil, or are they the same? In

terms of scent, there are almost

the same, actually, although true

enthusiasts will argue that they

do not. In terms of components,

they are indeed similar, owing

to the fact that both are from

the Pelargonium graveolens

plant, but they are from different

varieties. Rose geranium has the

full botanical name Pelargonium

graveolens var. Roseum while

geranium oil is simply known as

Pelargonium graveolens.

Aromatherapy Benefits Of

Geranium Essential Oil

You can reap the benefits of geranium

essential oil by diffusing it with water

into the air, using a diffusing device.

Alternatively, you can also place a few

drops of it onto your handkerchief and

sniff on it whenever desired. Some

people may even mix a few drops of

geranium essential oil into their bath

water for a long, calming soak, or,

blend it with their body lotion for a

lovely scented whole-body moisturiser.

CANCER

WON'T

WAIT

With an aim to raise

awareness of the importance

of early detection and

cancer treatment during this

COVID-19 pandemic, one

hospital has embarked on

an aptly named campaign

“Cancer Won’t Wait”.

To date, the hospital offers Free Cancer

Specialist Consultation under its CSR

programme for patients who wish

to seek a second opinion for cancer

treatment. That hospital is Beacon

Hospital. Beacon’s CSR programme has

already channeled more than RM35

million in financial aid to help ease the

burden faced by many patients who

face financial challenges. The team

of experts would like to encourage

people with new symptoms not to wait

and delay getting their diagnostic tests

done. In the unprecedented times of

the Pandemic, each individual is facing

uncertainty and stress. Presence of

cancer during these times compounds

concern and puts fears into patients as

many of them want to stay away from

hospitals due to COVID 19.

“We are

currently facing

stressful and

challenging

times with

the current

COVID-19

pandemic.

Yet it is crucial to know that the long

intervals between cancer detections,

diagnosis and treatment, could result

in disease progression or treatment

complications,” says Dato’ Dr

Mohamed Ibrahim Bin Dato’ Hj.

Abdul Wahid, Consultant Clinical

Oncologist & Medical Director

of Beacon Hospital. “It is vitally

important that you don’t delay cancer

treatments and our experienced team

of multidisciplinary specialists are here

to support you,” he added.

There are patients who have been

delaying their cancer treatments as

they are concerned about being in the

high-risk category of communities with

potential exposure to the COVID-19

virus If patients have new symptoms

during the pandemic, such as a lump,

or a change in your body that has not

gone away, patients are advised to not

put off seeing their doctors.

Cancer is a complex disease that

can begin practically at any organ or

tissue of the body when unusual cells

develop uncontrollably, go beyond

their typical limits to attack adjoining

parts of the body and/ or potentially

spread to different organs.

According to WHO, cancer is the

second leading cause of death

globally, accounting for an estimated

9.6 million deaths, or one in six deaths,

in 2018. Lung, prostate, colorectal,

stomach and liver cancer are the most

common types of cancer in men, while

breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and

thyroid cancer are the most common

among women.

Most symptoms are usually due to

something less serious than cancer, but

if it is cancer, the earlier it is detected,

the better the chances of recovery.

Cancer screening can help protect your

health through early detection, even if

you do not have any symptoms of the

disease. Simple screening tests look for

particular changes and early signs of

cancer before it has fully developed or

before any symptoms emerge.

Beacon Hospital is a medium-sized

cancer specialist hospital equipped

with 100 beds and more than 80

medical specialists. Its primary focus

is to provide advanced medical

equipment, specialist doctors and

professional nursing care to their

patients with love and empathy.

As part of its mission and values of

giving back to the community, the

management team of Beacon Hospital

initiated the Beacon’s Corporate Social

Responsibility (CSR) initiatives with the

aim to reach out to needy patients.

Generally, the objectives of Beacon

CSR programme are:

• Create public awareness on

cancer and other diseases

• Emphasize the importance of

early detection and encourage

patients to seek necessary

treatments earlier

• Reach out to the patients who

need financial aid for treatment

To date, this programme has already

channeled more than RM35 million in

financial aid to help ease the burden

faced by many underprivileged

patients.

Fit for Life

4 Things You Should Know About

Getting Fit And Staying Fit

Everyone wants a fit and healthy body, with a figure that looks like it was sculpted by the gods

themselves. Aha, but not everyone wants to, or has the drive to do what it takes to achieve

it! Let’s face it, we’re not going to get anywhere eating fast foods a few times a week, and

ditching exercise like it was the plague. It’s just not going to happen no matter how good your

genes are. However, if you do want to look good in your jeans, then here’s what you should

know right now!

Trying to get fit, and yes, keeping it

up, has always been a dilemma for

many out there. There always seems

to be something or another to keep

that dream from becoming a reality.

For some, there’s the old “I haven’t

got the time” excuse, that never

seems to go out of style. For others,

there’s just not enough drive, or

motivation to get up from the

couch and start moving that body

around for a bit. We want to, don’t

we? But we just can’t seem to get

started! And that’s the first hurdle to

get over, if a lean, fit and healthy

body is what we want for ourselves.

While we’re going to attempt to

change all that with this article, via

the 5 main things to see to, we also

have, as a bonus, a few mini tips you

can check out and these can be your

starting points before you take the

other big steps outlined for you

within these few pages. Here are a

few things to take care of first:

ÄÄStart something on a Monday.

Pick a Monday to start on your

exercise regime (as well as for

your diet change). They say that

anything started on a Monday

will more likely be continued as a

habit compared to if you were to

begin on any other day. Well, if

you think about it, starting

something new on a monday

and adhering to it for the entire

week will probably give you a

sense of accomplishment for

having persevered for that

timeframe - a whole, proper

week! It’ll then give you the push

you need to go on for another

week, and another and so on.

Nothing to lose there, right?

ÄÄWear ankle and wrist weights.

Start wearing these today! The

idea is to weight your limbs down

so that you’ll be using more

energy to move them, even while

you’re just getting about your

household chores, or

going for a short

walk in the park.

The more energy

you use, the more

calories you burn and the

more weight you’ll shed too.

Ankle and wrist weights will also

help you strengthen those arms

and legs if you use them for long

periods of time!

ÄÄLove yourself! Keep reminding

yourself that you’re worth every

effort. Many of us lose ourselves

to caring for our loved ones

without realising that we too are

worth loving, and that we need

to care for ourselves too.

Working towards a strong and fit

body is the best way to start

loving and taking good care of

yourself. In fact, the older you

get, the more you should care

for yourself. So, be it a change of

diet, starting a new hobby,

self-pampering, and of course,

getting serious with an exercise

regime, do it now - don’t wait.

24 Natural Health * May 2021 VOL 120

Fit for Life

1START TO MOVE THAT BODY LIKE YOU

MEAN IT

In other words, start an exercise regime, and

stick to it as if your life depended on it.

Exercising isn’t merely to lose weight and to

keep it off, but it does so much more than that!

Daily exercising, especially, strengthens your

body from within, and firms up your muscles. It

makes you feel energetic and acts as a mood

booster as well. While you don’t necessarily

have to go all out and start running, jogging,

cycling, etc, you should however start taking

up some sort of moderate physical activity in

your everyday life.

If you’re looking to lose some weight

however, then exercising should not only be

an integral part of your get-fit plan, but the

intensity of your exercises too should be

increased to help you achieve your goal.

One simple way you can go about this is to

go for a brisk walk (not a leisurely stroll,

mind you) each day, for at least an hour

each time. Alternatively, you could also try a

weight-loss exercise programme at home,

guided by any of the countless YouTube

videos available these days. Check them out

today, and pick one you can easily follow,

and get to it! One thing you’ll have to keep

in mind when working out is to stay

adequately hydrated at all times. Also, just

because you’re exercising everyday, it

doesn’t mean that you can neglect the

quality of your diet. (see point NO:2).

Consume a healthy, wholesome diet if you

wish to have and keep a fit, healthy and sexy

body, for your diet and exercise go hand in

hand - one simply won’t suffice without the

other! Reminder: If you’ve rarely exercised

before, it would be a good idea to get a

check up at your doctor’s office first, just to

be safe.

Alternatively,

you could also

try a weight-loss

exercise programme at

home, guided by any of

the countless YouTube

videos available

these days.

2

DEVELOP A HEALTHY SELF IMAGE OF

YOURSELF.

You are you, and you don’t have to live up to

the expectations of others, just because you

have decided to get healthier, fitter and

stronger. The point here is to become the best

version of yourself, and to be that, you will

need to be the healthiest you can be. It’s as

simple as that, really. So, when you look at the

mirror, try and see yourself (not someone you

envy), in a healthier, fitter way. What would

your new body look and feel like? How will

you feel in a pair of jeans that never fit you

before? What are all the activities you can

partake in that you’re avoiding at the moment

due to not being fit enough? Having a clear

vision of what you would like to achieve will

help you achieve wonders, believe us! The

only caveat is, it will have to be sensible and

believable! For example, if you’re wanting to

go from a size 18 to a size 8 in two weeks, you

will only be setting yourself up for

disappointment. Unless of course, you

resort to very unhealthy ways such as

starving yourself or taking in

dangerous get-slim-fast pills that

can be very damaging to your

internal organs! However, if

you’re desiring to lose five

kilograms in two months via

sensible exercises and a healthy

diet, and you see yourself looking

and feeling great upon achieving it, that’s a

goal you can be proud of!

The

point here is

to become the

best version of

yourself, and to be that,

you will need to be

the healthiest you

can be.

Fit for Life

3EAT WELL, AND IN THE RIGHT AMOUNT

This may sound like a no-brainer, but for those

who are trying hard to get this going, it’s a

whole different story. Living in Malaysia, we’re

surrounded by delicious, easily-available food,

24/7. Most, if not all of these foods are rich in

ingredients we don’t need if we’re serious

about getting fit - sugar, artificial tasteenhancers,

bad fats, artificial colorings, etc.

And…. they taste soooooooo good, don’t they?

They tempt us at the worst times too - in the

mornings (think nasi lemak, roti canai, etc);

lunch time (curry mee, mee mamak, rojak, etc);

tea time (all sorts of kuih-muih, need we say

more?); dinner time: (Fried chicken, burgers,

etc); and even supper time!

So, if you’re ever going to get fit and healthy,

this is one big obstacle to get over before you

can get started. Our food intake matters a lot

if we’re looking to get fit. We’ll need to take in

lots of green vegetables and fruits for the

nutrients and fibre. For example, apples,

broccoli, spinach and papayas will provide the

body with a myriad of essential nutrients while

keeping your digestive system clean and

well-running! In the April 2021 issue of Natural

Health, we ran an article on the meaning of

colors in plant foods. Do look it up for it’ll be

useful for this purpose.

Other than that, you’ll also have to choose

your meats and fish well too, for the good

animal proteins your body needs while you’re

working out towards a better body. Be choosy

about protein shakes and opt for those that

don’t include refined sugar, for that’s the last

thing your body needs when you’re trying to

get healthy.

We’ll

Alway consume your food in

need to

moderate portions and avoid

take in lots of

overeating. Overeating, mind you,

green vegetables

and fruits for the

can become a habit without you even

nutrients and

noticing it. If you constantly eat more

fibre

than what your body needs, your body

will tend to adapt to ‘needing’ more food for

you to feel satiated each time you eat. That’s

how many people end up consuming much

more calories than their bodies know what to

do with! Chew well: That’s one really helpful

tip! If you take the time to chew and enjoy

your food, you’ll find that you will eat less and

at the same time, get full quicker.

While

you sleep,

your body is

undergoing a nice

cleaning up, and getting

ready to expel all the

unwanted stuff via

your daily toilet

deeds.

4GET THE REST YOU

NEED

It is only through sleep

and rest that the body is

able to recharge and

rejuvenate from within!

When you sleep, your

body is still hard at work,

mending all that’s not

right inside you. If you

have been eating well

and treating your body

right, it will use this

precious sleeping time to

tend to all your internal

needs, such as catching

and expelling all toxins,

bringing vital nutrients to

all the different parts of

your body that needs

them, mending and

beautifying your skin

from the inside, etc.

While you sleep, your

body is undergoing a

nice cleaning up, and

getting ready to expel all

the unwanted stuff via

your daily toilet deeds.

Hence, eating enough

fibre during your dinner

will help a lot! Remember

too, that a heavy meal

too close to dinner time

is never a good idea. This

is because, instead of

getting busy with all the

things we mentioned

above, your body will be

using all its energy to

digest your big meal

instead, leaving it with

less time for the jobs it

was supposed to be

doing while you sleep!

Abide by the tips given

above and you’ll not

regret it! We hope this

article will help see you

get fit and stay fit. Tell us

about it, will you? If you

have a great get-fit story

to share, do write to the

editor at cindy.

Care Enough To Keep Those

Hands Clean!

5th of May this year happens to be World Hand Hygiene Day. However, now more than ever,

keeping our hands clean brings a whole new meaning to all our lives. Our wellbeing may even

be depending on it! Did you know, for instance, that researchers in London estimate that if

everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year could be prevented 1 ? Also, it is

estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrheal disease-associated

deaths by up to 50% 2.

It’s been a year plus into the pandemic, and handwashing

with soap remains one of our best defenses against the

virus, alongside other public health measures such as

maintaining physical distance, avoiding crowded places,

practising cough etiquette and wearing a mask wherever

recommended. To help stop the spread of COVID-19, the

practice of handwashing at regular intervals is a must, as well

as after coughing or sneezing, when caring for the sick, after

using the toilet, before eating, while preparing food and after

handling animals or animal waste. Also, wash your hands

after touching common surfaces such as door knobs or

handles, or after visiting a public place. These will help keep

us and others around us safe.

Why Your ENT Wants You

To Quit SMOKING Today!

Smoking has negative effects on the overall wellbeing of the body which can also be detrimental

to your ear, nose and throat health. This article shows you some of the reasons why your ENT

doctor wants you to stop this dangerous habit, immediately!

28 Natural Health * May 2021 VOL 120

SPECIAL

By: Dr. Paul Lim Vey Hong,

Consultant ENT Surgeon,

Tung Shin Hospital

Knowing how the nose and sinuses work to keep your

body healthy is important to understand why smoking is so

damaging to the health of your ears, nose and throat. Your

nose and sinuses have mucus-producing membranes that act

as your respiratory system’s first line of defense. The nose

and sinuses can be likened to the lung. They use tiny hai- like

structures on their surfaces, which are called cilia, to move

the mucus they produce into the throat to be swallowed.

Smoking causesthe cilia to cease functioning, leading the

mucus they produce to build up and become infected by

viruses and bacteria. This leads to nose, sinus, throat and

lung infections. Though cilia and mucus are our natural body

guards against illness, the irritation that is caused by inhaling

the toxins in tobacco smoke causes the mucus membranes

to overproduce mucus rich in inflammatory substances. This

mucus causes further inflammation and blocks up the air

spaces of the sinuses and lungs

For these reasons, smokers are much more prone to colds

and infections, and commonly experience chronic sinusitis,

pharyngitis, bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia.

There are many ENT disorders that can be caused by

smoking. While some of these disorders may be non-fatal,

the rest can have a great impact on quality of life - They

greatly increase visitation to clincis for medical treatment and

increase absentism from work and school.

Second-hand Smoke and Children

It is important to remember that second-hand exposure

to tobacco smoke also carries similar health risks for nonsmokers.

Children who live in homes where parents or other

individuals smoke indoors are especially at risk of nose, sinus,

throat and middle ear infections.

middle ear and even deafness. Middle ear infection is the

commonest cause of hearing loss in young people. If the

middle ear is damaged in childhood, the burst eardrum

and/or deafness is carried on into adulthood.

• Second-hand smoke is linked to the development of

asthma and increased sinus infections.

• The toxins in tobacco smoke damages the mucus

membranes of the nose, throat and lungs. Therefore

children who are exposed to tobacco smoke frequently

show signs of poorer ear, nose and throat health versus

children who are not exposed to tobacco smoke.

Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer

Smoking remains the main cause of lung cancer. While some

unfortunate individuals who never smoke still develop lung

cancers, evidence remains that these are related to pollution

and perhaps may also be due to secondary smoke.

Smoking is also the major cause of mouth, tongue and throat

cancers in the head and neck regions. The toxins in tobacco

smoke causes damage to and mutation in the DNA of cells

turning them from healthy to cancerous. When smokers quit

smoking, the exposure to these toxins stops and the cells

may recover.

These cancers are life threatening and impose great

socio-economic burden on the patients and their families.

Their treatment can be complex, lengthy, expensive,

uncomfortable and may carry long term side effects in order

to achieve cure. Hence it is by far better to prevent these

cancers by not smoking or quitting smoking early then to

face these dreaded diseases when they strike years later.

Remember the following at all times:

• Second hand smoke is very harmful to everyone,

especially children. Those who are exposed even briefly to

second-hand smoke experience increased occurrences of

middle ear infections and a longer duration of the illness.

• Cigarrete smoke causes irritation of the Eustachian tube,

essential to the ventilation of the middle ear. Damage

to the cilia of the mucus membrane of the nose and

eustachian tube will lead to build up of mucus in the

middle ear. This causes hearing loss, ear discomfort

and even dizziness. This accumulated mucus easily gets

infected by bacteria turning the mucus to pus causing

fever, pain, bursting of the eardrum, scarring of the

Mask-Up, Even

After Being

The vaccine is not an automatic

off switch for the pandemic.

Masks and social distancing

will need to continue into

the foreseeable future.

Dr Chieng Jin Yu, Internal

Medicine, Gastroenterology

and Hepatology, from Pantai

Hospital Ampang (PHA)

explains the reasons why

you still need to wear a mask

despite being vaccinated.

Dr Chieng Jin Yu

Internal Medicine,

Gastroenterology

and Hepatology,

Pantai Hospital

Ampang (PHA)

Q: How long will it take for the vaccine to

work?

Dr Chieng: We won’t reach the 70% to 95%

effectiveness rate until a few weeks after our

second shot of the vaccine (and a few weeks

after we get our single shot of vaccine if yours

is a single-dose- vaccination). Vaccine takes

time for the immune system to make the

antibodies that block viral infections.

Q: Will the vaccine provide 100%

protection?

Dr Chieng: No vaccines provide 100 protection.

Although the vaccines are incredibly effective,

according to the studies, they only offer 70%

to 95% protection. And it's’ tough to know

who is the one not responding to the vaccine.

If you are the one that does not gain enough

antibody level, you will still be at risk for

COVID-19 especially if you do not wear a mask!

Q: What will be the fate of those who are

contraindicated for vaccination?

Dr Chieng: We still need to protect those

who can’t be vaccinated. Our MOH had

recommended that if you’ve had a severe

allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in

the vaccine, you shouldn’t get it. And those

who are pregnant (without high risk) or those

who are in the active phase of autoimmune

disease (especially those who are on biologic or

high dose steroid treatment), etc are also not

recommended for vaccination.

Q: How long will it take for us to achieve

herd immunity?

Dr Chieng: It will take some time. Unfortunately,

getting vaccinated does not instantly mean we

can go back to how life was before. In order for

us to reach herd immunity, 70% to 80% of the

population will need to be vaccinated. However,

it is not easy for any country to achieve an

ideal held immunity in a short duration.

Most countries have faced several obstacles,

some predictable, some not, when running

the vaccination campaign. First at all, vaccine

supply is limited and uncertain. Many hospitals

are already overwhelmed with COVID-19

caseloads. Moreover, not everyone wants the

shot. All these issues could lead to difficulty in

building a good held immunity. More efforts

are required to overcome these issues.

Q: Will those who have been vaccinated be

asymptomatic spreaders?

Dr Chieng: The vaccines prevent illness, but

experts are not sure if the vaccines also prevent

the virus transmission.

Covid-19

Covid-19: Why Exactly Are

We All Masking Up?

As of early last year, using a face mask when a person is outdoors was made mandatory, whereby

failure to do so will result in the individual being fined. We may lament, grumble and question

this law, but how much do we really understand about masking up or the consequences of not

doing so (other than being slapped with a hefty fine!)? Will it really make a difference in terms of

protection? Let’s find out from not one, but two obliging gentlemen, namely Dr. Suria Prakash,

Physician & Internal Medicine from Pantai Hospital, Laguna Merbok, and Dr Bernard Chan Yoon

Ngen, General Surgeon at Pantai Hospital, Sungai Petani.

Q & A with Dr. Suria Prakash,

Physician & Internal Medicine, Pantai

Hospital, Laguna Merbok (PHLM)

Dr Bernard Chan Yoon Ngen,

General Surgeon, Pantai Hospital,

Sungai Petani (PHSP)

NH: Why should people wear masks?

Masks should be used as part of an embracive strategy to

suppress transmission and safeguard oneself. However, the

use of a mask alone is not adequate to provide an adequate

level of protection against COVID-19.

In addition to wearing a mask, taking some simple

precautions, such as physical distancing, keeping rooms well

ventilated, keeping away from crowds, cleaning/disinfecting

your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue. Check

local advice where you live and work. Do it all!

Make wearing a mask a standard part of being around other

people. The appropriate use, storage and cleaning or disposal

of masks are vital to make them as effective as possible.

NH: What are some important lessons that we can learn

from this pandemic?

Dr Bernard Chan: We learn that humanity can adapt very

fast to new challenges. From physical interactions, we have

adapted to online interactions. Being adaptable is the way

to survival.

We also learn of the incredible sacrifices made by health care

workers in the frontlines. These are people who saved many

while taking unknown risks to themselves. These are the

heroes of the pandemic era. Salute to them!

Another lesson is that we need to watch our mental health as

well as our physical health. While keeping physical distancing

helps us survive, we still need to keep our social proximity.

NH: Can you share with us the basic steps on how to

wear a mask correctly?

Dr. Suria Prakash: Hands must be washed before you put

your mask on, as well as before and after you take it off, and

after you touch it at any time.

Ensure it covers your nose, mouth, and chin properly.

When you take off a mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and

every day either wash it if it’s a fabric mask, or dispose of a

medical mask in a trash bin.

NH: Are people wearing their masks correctly?

Dr Bernard Chan: Many people are. The awareness of the

importance of wearing masks correctly has improved much.

However, there are those who feel that they don't have to wear

masks amongst colleagues, friends, or relatives. Sometimes,

people feel shy to put on masks when chatting or working with

friends or colleagues. This can lead to a chain of transmission

of virus in the community. In fact, the only people that we stay

without masks are our immediate family members.

NH: Is the practice physical distancing good enough

among Malaysians?

Dr Bernard Chan: Yes. The awareness and practice are

generally good. One important situation when this is often

forgotten is at meals. Physical distancing when sharing

meals with anyone who is not in our household is of utmost

importance as we are not wearing masks when eating. The

best practice is to eat at home or eat alone. It is very difficult

to maintain the physical distance of at least 2 meters we

should have when we interact without masks for more than

15 minutes at meals.

NH: Do you have any advice for the public?

Dr Bernard Chan:

• Wear your masks around ANYONE outside your

household.

• Eat at home or eat alone.

• Maintain physical distancing as well as maintain social

proximity.

• Get vaccinated when available.

International Nurses Day

Nursing

The Most Noble

Profession There Is

We all know all too well, that the nursing

profession has got to be one of the most noble

of professions that exists. The sacrifices that

nurses make on a daily basis, whether it’s their

time or their resources, is to be reckoned with,

surely. What exactly does it take to be a nurse,

especially during this time of a worldwide

pandemic? In conjunction with International

Nurses Day 2021, which falls on the 12th of

May, BabyTalk chatted with three outstanding

individuals who are in the nursing profession,

and here’s what they had to share with us all!

A Male In A

Female’s Domain

Lim Kim Fuu, 34.

Nurse Manager, Columbia Asia

Hospital, Puchong

Predominantly occupied by females,

it’s quite safe to say that male nurses

are quite a rarity among our society.

Hailing from Kuching, Sarawak, 34-

year old father of one, Lim Kim Fuu has

been in the nursing scene for the past

decade and is still very much in love

with his job, which he carries out with

full dedication. Nursing, apparently,

wasn’t his first choice of career. “After

my STPM, I looked for opportunities to

further my studies. Although nursing

wasn’t my first choice, I came across an

application for a scholarship to pursue

studies in Bachelor of Nursing in

International Medical University (IMU).

I tried my luck, applied for it and I got

accepted. I took this as fate, enrolled

myself into a nursing programme and

that is how it all started,” he related his

experience with BabyTalk.

Being an emergency nurse, Lim

finds that there is a certain joy to be

felt when he gets to help people,

especially when they're in pain. “ It’s

always a wonder to see how medicine

works. A patient can be in pain one

minute, and in the next moment, he

or she could be smiling happily and

in relief,” he shared. “Nursing also

teaches me about how precious life

is when you can see the beginning

of life as well as the end of life at the

same time.”

It’s not always an easy job, though,

especially being a male in a

predominantly female occupation,

as Lim pointed out. “The most

challenging part being a male nurse

is handling female patients, and this is

largely due to gender discrimination

and cultural barriers in Malaysia. Most

female patients would prefer a female

nurse to handle them. As a Manager,

another challenge I usually encounter

is to manage my staff of various

age groups and different levels of

education, where they all need to be

treated professionally,” he shared.

There is a widespread belief that

people end up being a nurse when

or if they fail to qualify as a doctor,

but Lim is adamant that it’s the other

way around.”Being a nurse is more

challenging than you think. You

need to learn about what doctors

know such as anatomy, biomedical,

drugs, etc. Nursing is not an easy

task, for there has to be passion and

determination for one to thrive in this

occupation,” he explained.

Lim hopes that one day nurses will

be at par with doctors and work hand

in hand with them instead or just

taking orders. “Nurses are with the

patient 24/7 and are an advocate to

the patient, educator to them, and

the list goes on. Therefore, I hope that

nurses can be involved in part of the

treatment plan of the patient instead

of just carrying out doctors’ orders.” he

stated with conviction.

A Physical and

Mental Challenge

Nurul Farhana Binti Zainal Abidin, 32.

Infection Control Charge Nurse, Sri Kota

Specialist Medical Centre

Born in her grandmother’s house

in Sungai Besar, Selangor, 32-year

old wife and mother of two, Nurul

Farhana Binti Zainal Abidin has

been serving as a nurse in Sri Kota

Specialist Medical Centre (SKSMC) in

Klang for the past 11 years. She began

her career at SKSMC as a Staff Nurse

in the Emergency Department from

January 2011 until 2017 before being

transferred to the Infection Control

Unit in 2017. Last year, Nurul Farhana

got promoted to Charge Nurse in the

Infection Control Unit.

As a child, Nurul Farhana was always

inspired by her father to become

a nurse. “To him, nurses are like

angels, always noble and kind, always

empathetic to all, especially the

needy, always doing good things and

helping others. Besides that, there

are only a few nurses in my family,

and they too have motivated me to

embark on this journey.

Nurul Farhana shared that she loved

her job partly because she derives

utmost satisfaction while helping

patients who need treatments. It also

makes her day when patients thank

her for her help. Nurul Farhana also

loves learning new things and the

adventurous environments that her

job sometimes provides. This was

especially during the early stages of

the Covid-19 pandemic, when she had

many new experiences and challenges,

including developing SOP's to manage

patients, visitors and healthcare

workers in the hospital. “I love working

in SKSMC, especially with my Nursing

Management team because it is a

wonderful team with great teamwork.

We always

support each

other, and the

hospital provides

opportunities for

us to further our

studies.”

When the

Covid-19

pandemic broke

out in early 2020,

the entire SKSMC

management

team and

Infection Control

Unit set up the

Policy of Management for Covid-19

in SKSMC based on MOH Guidelines.

“SKSMC’s Management Team had to

set up an ad hoc meeting to discuss

how to manage the infectious disease

effectively and vigilantly according

to MOH Guidelines.The Infection

Control Team had to educate all staff

on proper procedures for donning

and doffing PPE during the pandemic,

Nurul Farhana said. “We had to set up

the Policy on Management of patients,

visitors and healthcare workers during

the pandemic together with the

management team, as well as set up

policies on the new norm based on

MOH Guidelines together with the

management team (virtual training,

3W 3C poster). All HOD's needed to

audit the staff, patients and visitors to

ensure all MOH SOP's are adhered to.”

Nurul Farhana wishes that the

pandemic will be over soon and

expressed her relief that the vaccine is

currently being rolled out. SKSMC, by

the way, is one of the vaccine centres

in Klang. Together with the team, she

is helping to manage the vaccination

days for over 300 private healthcare

frontliners from hospitals nearby,

including their own as well as other

staff members of SKSMC. She also

encourages all Malaysians to register

for the Covid-19 Vaccination as it is a

way to prevent further transmission of

the virus. ‘Lindung diri, lindung semua’,

as she put it.

She advised all those who wish to

become nurses to be prepared to

be tough and adventurous both

mentally and physically. “You must

always have a good heart and be

brave in voicing out brilliant new

ideas to make our patients more

comfortable,” she concluded.

What are your hopes for the future

as a nurse? I hope to become a

wonderful leader while being kind and

generous to all my colleagues. I hope I

can voice out brilliant ideas related to

nursing in the future, InsyaAllah.

A Thirst For Learning

New Things

Nur Afiqah binti Zairizal, 29.

Nurse, Pantai Hospital Klang.

It’s been almost seven and a half years

since Kuala Lumpur-born Nur Afiqah

binti Zairizal began her career as a

nurse. The 29-year old mother of two

wanted to get into nursing after joining

PBSM in high school. She happened

to take up a course on basic first aid

and found it super interesting. “I was

curious about a nurse job and the

more I learned about what nurses did,

the more I found myself excited by the

prospect of helping people in medical

situations. I wanted to expand this skill

and I felt that nursing was a good fit

for me,” she told Babytalk in a recent

interview. Nur Afiqah was right about

her decision when she realized how

rewarding it was to be able to make

people who are sick and uncomfortable

feel better, even just a little. “Plus,

the nursing profession is constantly

evolving where there are numerous

career paths available within the

profession,” she stated, affirmatively.

Nur Afiqah admitted to being in love

with this profession as it is one that never

stops giving. She also loves that she can

learn new things every day and is able

to provide care for patients who are

in need. “I love the endless amount of

learning and science that the healthcare

field offers. I chose the emergency

department in my nursing career as

I prefer challenges and it provides

a platform for me to use my critical

thinking when the need arises. I am so

proud to be a part of a team that could

be ready to save someone’s life within

minutes,” she shared enthusiastically.

One has to be ready though, as Nur

Afiqah explained, for a high degree

of mental, emotional and physical

exhaustion by end of the shift

especially when the shift is havoc!

“Lack of respect and verbal abuse from

patients, management and sometimes

even the physicians, may lead to

mental and emotional disturbance,”

she revealed to all. “Another challenge

would be time management.

Balancing time between preparing

patient charts/paperworks and

providing patient care need to be

balanced. Sometimes, when we’re

not careful enough, we may end up

spending more time on paperwork

and less on patient care. Besides

that, losing a patient under our care

is another really hard part of being a

nurse. I’ve always struggled to keep

myself from crying during those

situations, but at the same time, I

also have to always show empathy

by giving family members time and

space to grieve.”

As the year 2020 was defined by

the Coronavirus pandemic and has

affected all healthcare providers

fighting on the frontlines to safeguard

the lives of everyone affected, it

naturally had a big impact on Nur

Afiqah and her colleagues at work,

where they needed to be extra careful

in triaging patients and detecting

suspected cases with the infections.

“We had to be well equipped with

essential knowledge and skills

in managing the crisis involving

clinical treatment, isolation and

decontamination. I always practiced

proper hand hygiene and wearing full

PPE to prevent myself and spreading

the infections. However, it is truly

heartbreaking being isolated due

to handling Covid cases and to be

kept apart from my family. It made

me nervous and anxious every time

I went to work as there was a high

possibility of getting infected and

spreading the infection to my family,”

she stated solemnly.

To Nur Afiqah, the most rewarding

thing about being a nurse is making

a difference in the lives of others.

In nursing, according to her, you

have to always remember to have

empathy and to give the best care

possible. “Always ask for feedback

for self-improvement. Be receptive

and grateful when others offer advice

or suggestions. When a situation

escalates, it's also really important to

remain as calm as possible, so you can

be helpful and make right decisions.

You will take part in codes and

encounter emergencies, so be steady

and be ready to do whatever you’re

asked. Last but not least, never stop

learning to continue your personal

and professional growth,” she advised

all those who are hoping to become

nurses, as she wished them good luck.

“I have been able to meet different

types of people who I am sure I’ll never

run into in my everyday life. I feel

that my nursing profession has made

me a better person and I can see the

world in a completely different way.

The shift patterns, the lack of social life

and the exhaustion has at times been

a nightmare, but things fall into place

naturally. I really adore learning and

have completed my Advance Diploma

in Emergency Care and I would love

to continue and pursue a Bachelor of

Nursing and will never stop learning.

Lastly, I really hope that nurses will be

more appreciated, and our salaries

will be fairly increased, as nursing is

inherently a very demanding profession

entailing long working hours and

overnight schedules,” she deduced.

Why are Care Professionals

joining in?

In Malaysia, Homage has about 300

Care Pros to date, and about 87% of

our Care Pros are female caregivers

and nurses.

The Care Pros undergo comprehensive

and stringent criminal records

and checks from the PDRM

(Royal Malaysia Police Force) and

MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption

Commission). Along with that, every

Care Pro will need to provide current

documentation of CPR certification.

Care Pros (those who are not

registered nurses and apply to be

caregivers under Homage) undergo

professional caregiver training,

currently conducted by their training

partner International Medical College,

Malaysia’s largest nursing college.

There is a collaboration with the

International Medical College’s Nursing

department to provide basic caregiving

and basic life support training.

The course covers several areas of

caregiving such as communication

skills, personal hygiene care, manual

transfers, feeding techniques and

many more. The training takes place

for two days, conducted by Nurse

Instructors from IMC.

Common reasons for

engagement for care services

Most families engage in home care

services for post-hospitalisation care

and chronic medical conditions.

Common medical conditions

include dementia, stroke, heart

disease, hypertension, and cancer.

Companionship and engagement

is another vital area where home

care lends its support. Through

conversations and interactions,

loneliness is kept at bay and care

recipients’ minds and bodies can stay

active through physical exercises and

mind games.

Primary caregivers also reach out

for support when they are unable to

care for their loved ones due to work

commitments or when they would like

to have a respite from caregiving.

Common reasons of engagement

include activities of daily

living including personal care,

companionship, staying active, meal

preparation, and medication care.

Families also get support for medical

escort and transport assistance for

their loved one’s doctor appointments,

traveling to treatment and day facilities

or important functions.

Determined to support Malaysia’s aging generation

PC Gan developed a deep passion about the burgeoning importance of

sustaining Malaysia’s ageing generation ever since her grandfather (who

was residing alone) suffered a heart attack in the middle of the night. After

finding him in the morning nearly devoid of breath, she sought the proper

medical care at hospitals; yet many declined his admission. This drove PC to

do more for Malaysia’s underserved ageing generation. With Homage, PC is

continuing to ask important questions surrounding a key pillar of aged care –

professional nurses, who have long been classified as just blue-collar workers.

Seeing that many provide a crucial function to sustaining healthcare delivery

in Malaysia, PC believes nurses should be given the same rights as doctors, if

not more due to their long and close engagements with patients daily. The

Country Manager of Homage is driven to bridge this ever-widening

ecosystem gap; however, that is not all she seeks to disrupt.

She intends to make a meaningful difference in recognising all

professionals within the healthcare ecosystem, especially during

the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes people working tirelessly

in labs every day to combat the coronavirus spread to get

results out in time. Homage, under PC’s guidance, responded

to the call to help fight COVID-19 from those near and far.

The organisation rallied its people and resources within

a short eight-month timeframe and by the end of 2020,

Homage had evolved its response by gathering its army

of dedicated frontliners to help Malaysia emerge from the

current crisis as soon as possible.
