Rafiq-ul-Haramayn 11
5. Show the luggage to be loaded on the hired transport to the
transporter in advance. Do not load extra luggage without his
consent.
A parable
It is reported that once Sayyidunā ‘Abdullāĥ Ibn Mubārak
was about to go on a journey. A person gave him a letter to deliver
to somebody. Sayyidunā ‘Abdullāĥ Ibn Mubārak
said, ‘I
have hired the camel, so I will have to seek permission from its owner
as I have shown him my entire luggage and this letter is an extra thing.’

6. It is stated in a Ḥadīš, ‘Whenever three people depart for a journey,
they should choose any one of them as Amīr.’ (Abū Dāwūd, vol. 3,
pp. 51, Ḥadīš 2608) This helps manage the affairs.
7. The Amīr should be a well-mannered, wise and religious person
and a follower of Sunnaĥ.
8. The Amīr should serve his companions, striving for their
comfort and convenience.
9. When leaving for the journey, leave as if one is going to depart
from the world. Recite the following Du’ā whilst departing:
ا ‏َللّ‏ ‏ٰهُ‏ مَّ‏
الْمَنْظَ‏ رِ‏
اِنَّا نَعُ‏ وْ‏ ذُبِكَ‏ مِنْ‏ وَّعْ‏ ثَآءِ‏ السَّ‏ فَرِ‏ وَ‎ َ ‏ٰبح بَةِ‏ الْ‏ ‏ُمنْقَلَبِ‏ وَسُ‏ وْٓ‏ ‏ِء
‏ِفى الْمَا
‏ِل
‏َو الاْ‏ ‏َهْ‏ ‏ِل
ط
‏َو الْوَ‏ لَ‏ ‏ِد
By virtue of this Du’ā, your wealth and family members will
remain safe till return.
10. After putting on the travelling clothes, if it is not Makrūĥ time
(for Ṣalāĥ), offer four Rak’āt Nafl Ṣalāĥ with Sūraĥ Al-Fātiḥaĥ
and Sūraĥ Al-Ikhlāṣ in each Rak’at. This Ṣalāĥ will secure estate
and family members till return.
