On the Outer Rim

By John Grey

If society has an outer rim,

it’s here, beneath the overpass.

Three men, one woman, sleep

under blankets of old newspapers,

rest their heads on charity coats,

fitfully sleep through the summer night

while traffic rumbles above

and humid stench drifts off the river.

They’re still there, months after the last time

I put words to paper on their behalf.

They beg for cash not reading material.

A poem that weeps is of no use to them.
