Lifetime
Progression
Did you know that the Delta Chi Educational
Foundation tracks all of your gifts with lifetime
recognition? Every gift you make via the DCEF,
whether to your Chapter Scholarship Account,
ECHI account, General Fund, Endowment Fund,
or Galbreth Leadership Fund, etc. is tracked and
recognized. Lifetime Giving (LTG) levels each
have their own set of special recognition. The
DCEF would like to thank these and all donors
who have achieved any LTG level!
BE BOLD,
S T A Y T R U E
I
I am extremely proud of the bold initiatives guided by
our volunteers serving on both the Foundation Board
and our committees in response to the COVID-19
pandemic. Within weeks of the pandemic’s onset last
year, discussions began on how our foundation would
respond, with subjects covering everything from
staff travel for donor visits to gift solicitations and
market protection of existing assets. Was it tone-deaf
to continue to ask for gifts in these uncertain times,
or did it create a specific reason for a certain pool of
donors to feel motivated to step forward? Situations
demanded action. To borrow a line from the late Steve
Jobs, deciding what NOT to do became as important as
deciding what to do.
To safeguard the health of both our staff and our
donors, all staff travel was curtailed for a significant
portion of 2020. The scenario necessitated new thought
processes; old keys would not open new doors. Personal
phone conversations increased, folks brushed up on their handwriting skills, and
we all learned what it meant to Zoom.
Most importantly, our staff followed the professional advice of our brothers on
the Fundraising Committee, appealing to our existing donor base to continue or
expand their financial gifts in this time of need. Our donors responded accordingly,
and I am pleased to report that 2020 donations not only remained on par with 2019
giving levels, but they eventually surpassed them. For this I offer all of our donors
a heartfelt Thank You. The results are particularly notable in light of the challenges
some of our contemporaries endured after choosing a path of passivity and “waiting
it out”; many foundations raised virtually zero funds in 2020, and the effects of
their decisions will be felt within their ranks for quite some time.
Enclosed is an Annual Report, our latest endeavor to expand on the requests of our
donors. Simple snapshot data and graphs to help illustrate how your foundation
has grown over the past few years, and areas where you can be involved and help
support our brotherhood into the future. Scholarship opportunities are expanding;
morale has remained high; our donor base continues to grow. 2021 will see the
launch of a formal feasibility study ahead of our first capital campaign.
The goal is straightforward; build funds to help support leadership programming
and fortify foundation operations in both the short-term immediate sense and on a
permanent basis via the Endowment. We must begin planning for our future, if we
are to have one of relevance. Some of our contemporaries have long accomplished
this, while other smaller organizations see the warning signs and are building their
savings now. In the words of a prominent donor, “this is long overdue for our brotherhood.”
I agree wholeheartedly with his sentiment, and I look forward to finding
avenues for all of us to be individually engaged in this worthy campaign. We will
all have a place and a role in this story of success about to be written.
On behalf of the Foundation Board and Staff, thank you again for your time, talent
and treasure.
A T T H E H E L M
The Tampa Bay Times dubbed Chip Merlin, Florida ‘80, “the Master of Disaster” for his
nationwide catastrophe work and helping insurance policy holders following Hurricane
Katrina. Chip is a man full of passion for life, for people, for fun, and for getting things done!
At 62, Chip isn’t slowing down. He’s the Founder and President of Merlin Law Group,
a firm with attorneys licensed to practice in 22 states, in over 10 offices around
the country, established in 1985. They are the nation’s foremost experts in property
insurance litigation, and have been one of the early firms tackling COVID-19 business
insurance claims. In addition, all natural disasters are a specialty, including hurricanes,
wildfires, flooding, tornadoes, hail damage, etc. He’s also the owner of Merlin Yacht
Racing (more on that in a moment).
He’s coming off a year of extensive book promotion as a
ForbesBooks Featured Author PAY UP, Preventing a Disaster
with Your Own Insurance Company. He’s a thought-leader,
constantly sharing his knowledge and expertise on radio,
social media, web, print, and more. In March 2021 he tells us
a second book is already in the works.
As Founder and President of Merlin Law Group, Chip has
dedicated his practice to the representation and advocacy
of insurance policyholders in disputes with insurance
companies nationwide.
Chip was noted as the “Babe Ruth of Hurricane lawyers” in the Asbury Park Free Press
for his work on behalf of 23 municipalities and hundreds of policyholders following
Superstorm Sandy.
He was provided a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Florida Association of Public
Adjusters for his advocacy on behalf of policyholders. He is on the Board of Directors of
United Policyholders, has been a guest commentator on CNN and Fox News and is past
Chair of the Insurance Bad Faith Litigation Group of the American Association of Justice.
Two things dramatically shaped Chip’s life and career:
“When I was only about 10 years old, the water heater in our house broke down. I’ll
never forget overhearing my mother saying to my father, “If anything else breaks, we
won’t have the money to fix it.” My father was a lieutenant commander in the U.S.
35
Serving as “A” of the Florida Chapter in 1979, Chip remarked how the experience
of leading a 100+ man chapter made such an impact on how he managed
people and organizations. He still carries those lessons with him today, leading
a national law firm and world-class yacht racing team. He gives generously
to support Delta Chi through the DCEF, both locally and internationally, having
reached Order of the Scimitar lifetime giving ($25,000+). He continues to set
an example for all Delta Chi fraternity men to strive towards.
Coast Guard. My mother was a nurse. My parents were frugal,
but like a lot of middle-class families, we still lived paycheck to
paycheck… I wanted a job that would pay enough money to afford
simple repairs without breaking the bank.
I was not certain what path to take in life. All I knew was that I
was going to the University of Florida. Though my father moved us
around a lot in the military, he held onto his Florida residency so I
could get less expensive in-state tuition.
A month before starting college, I was in a bad car accident with a
friend who’d invited me to a family fishing trip to the Chesapeake
Bay. [Fortunately no one was killed] It was a horrible accident. My
dad suggested that we not hire an attorney to deal with the fallout
of the accident. In the 1940s his own father had a bad experience
with lawyers that resulted in the family construction business
losing a case they felt they should have won. The possibility of my
becoming a lawyer was not a topic of discussion in our house. I had
never even considered it. But the accident left me feeling powerless.
I didn’t know my rights or where I stood. Later, I saw that my friend
and his family had their attorney involved in the matter. Everybody
who was in the accident had a lawyer except me. It dawned on me
that lawyers knew where they stood in the world because they knew
the law. They knew their rights. They knew how to fight for those
rights. They knew how to stand up for themselves and others.
Today I am more than three decades into a legal career. I couldn’t
be more satisfied with my decision to go into law. I still believe that
knowing the law means knowing your rights. I also know my clients’
rights - and I can fight for them. Every day for over 35 years now,
my work has allowed me to be someone’s champion. As an insurance
claims attorney and policyholder advocate, I get to fight for the
little guy, the underdog, the everyday people and business owners
trying to make their way in the world and collect what they are
owed by insurance companies. I may not be in the military, but my
practice allows me the honor to fight for and serve people every day.
It certainly doesn’t hurt that, at least after the first few lean years of
starting my own firm, I haven’t had to worry about replacing the water
heater when it breaks down. But what I love most about being an
insurance claims attorney is advocating for other people.”
Merlin Yacht Racing
The team was established in 2017 after Chip purchased the iconic
sailboat from Bill Lee, the ship’s creator. Chip’s done quite a bit of east
coast sailing, mostly in Annapolis, Maryland and Mobile, Alabama. His
most recent program being the B-32 “Chips All In” sailing out of the
Davis Island Yacht Club.
With the new crew, the boat sailed in its first race from St. Petersburg
to Havana, Cuba, on February 26, 2018 and was first In Line Honours
and first in its class. 2019 placed third in the Trans-Pacific (Transpac) Race,
from L.A. to Hawaii. Follow his team this July in the 2021 Transpac!
Merlin Yacht Racing brings innovation and nostalgia to the sport of sailboat
racing. With the boat weighing 24,000 pounds, a beam of 12 feet,
and a sail area of 1,800 square feet, the hours of engineering that were
spent to create the Merlin in 1977 made sailing a large ultralightdisplacement
boat something special – the motto “Fast is Fun” lives on.
Merlin represents the boundless enthusiasm of the seventies and the
mystique of unconquered waters of today.

Leadership Fund
Did you benefit from the leadership
opportunities afforded to you through
your experience in Delta Chi? Many of
our alumni credit their professional success to the
lessons and experiences they learned from leading
their peers in the chapter.
You can now give back to advance leadership
in Delta Chi through the Raymond D. Galbreth
Leadership Fund. The purpose of the fund is to
provide support for the educational programming
of Delta Chi, to increase the capacity of existing
leadership development programs and to support
future initiatives.
*Ray Galbreth, Executive Director Emeritus, was
Delta Chi’s longest serving full-time Executive
Director: 1979-2012. Under his leadership, the
Fraternity doubled in terms of membership and
the number of chapters. His passion was to empower
our members to become better professional
and societal leaders.
https://deltachi.org/scholarships-and-programs/
the incredible efforts of our facilitator team, our
generous donors, and the IHQ staff, the first-ever virtual
“A”s’ Academy was a success. Attended by 100+ “A”s, the
virtual program consisted of over 15 hours of educational
curriculum (adapted and shortened for time in front of a
computer) aimed at supporting our “A”s in developing their
leadership, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.
In an effort to keep costs down, Delta Chi utilized its existing
Zoom platform to deliver the curriculum, along with the
support of 22 outstanding volunteer facilitators (11 Delta Chis,
11 Friends of the Fraternity). The Sched App was utilized to
help manage the schedule, allow easy access to the participation
links, and share materials with participants. Finally,
boxes were mailed to participants in advance that included
their “A”s’ Academy t-shirt, Delta Chi facemask, “A”s’ Badge,
and other program materials.
Facilitator quotes:
Sean Conrad, Gorham State ‘97 - 2nd Year Facilitator
CargoSprint, National Director of Business Development
The fact that we pulled it off (virtually) is seizing the opportunity
in this environment. I would have bet Recruitment
would have been the top topic, but what kept coming up is
retention; how to exist in a virtual environment, justifying
active dues, being disconnected with alumni, etc. One of my
favorite parts is when the guys realize “wow, there’s other
guys going through the same thing I am, or inheriting the
same challenges as I’m inheriting.”
Justin Sherman, Central Missouri ‘08 - 1st Year Facilitator
DCEF, Executive Director
It was easy to stay engaged for hours on end – the weekend
flew by! Fraternity staff did a really good job with creativity
and making it work under current circumstances. Every
large session had a small breakout group, which forced you
to pay attention. We had to be strategic on facilitating the
(small group) conversations to stay on track because everyone
was so eager to share stories and help each other. This
group of “A”s definitely had every opportunity to learn what
other “A”s have learned – only thing that changed was the
way info was distributed.
Rich Paulsen, Embry Riddle ‘97 took on a new
role in the FBI which required him to go back
to school and get a Masters in Cyber Security.
Rich has been a loyal donor to the Delta Chi
Educational Foundation for many years (Order
of the Scimitar), and as an informed donor he
knew about the Graduate Student Scholarship.
He decided to apply. Much to his surprise he was
awarded one of the scholarships, worth $5,000.
He used the money to help offset the expenses
for tuition and books, but also gave some of
it back!
Rich’s story is a great example of how the
Delta Chi Educational Foundation delivers on
the promise: The Brotherhood of a Lifetime.
The Graduate Student Scholarship doesn’t
at any stage of life. Let Delta Chi help pay
Impact Report – Leadership
Brendan Shields-Shimizu,
Southern California ‘07
Becoming an effective leader takes effort, empathy
and time. Brother Brendan Shields-Shimizu,
Southern California ‘07 has worked hard to
become a leader in his Delta Chi career and his
professional life. As an undergraduate, Brendan
was elected the ‘F’, ‘B’ and ‘A’ of his Chapter where
he attended the inaugural “A”s’ Academy in 2006.
After graduation, Brendan served on his Chapter’s
ABT, Housing Corporation and as a Ritualist for
Delta Chi.
“Attending the “A”s’ Academy you find that none
of us are qualified and all of us are qualified at the
same time to be the leader of our Chapters. You
meet all these people, and they’re the only ones
who understand what you’re going through. One
of the main skills I learned at the “A”s’ Academy
was general communication, and the importance of
listening. In our Chapter, and in the international
fraternity, everyone comes together to form Delta
Chi, different backgrounds, different majors with
different ideas and different ways they see the
world. You have to be willing to listen.”
Brendan is now a Managing Director at the Award
winning company, Observatory Agency; a modern,
full-service creative ad agency, in Los Angeles with
deep roots in entertainment. Brendan “As a leader
in my professional life, I find that the next big idea
can come from the brand new employee fresh out
of college or the CEO of the business. And either of
those ideas could be enhanced by the other or anyone
else in the organization. You have to be open
to everyone’s input.”
Asked why he gives back to Delta Chi, Brendan
tells us “I’m very lucky that I’ve been able to give
of my time, my skills and my money. I want to try
to make sure every undergraduate has the same or
a better experience than I had as an undergraduate
member. We can really make a difference if we
all give a little bit of our time and our money.”
We thank Brendan for his time, his support and his
service to Delta Chi!

The Barrister
Capital
Corporation
(BCC)
BCC was officially formed in 2016 to dramatically
re-shape our approach to housing
as a strategic initiative. The majority of Delta
Chi Chapters are founded after 1970. Many
of these Chapters historically struggle with
obtaining, managing, or retaining competitive
housing on their respective campuses.
Barrister’s mission is designed to tackle that
very issue. Their mission is explicitly defined
to serve and assist The Delta Chi Fraternity
alumni and undergraduates’ housing needs.
Thanks to HumpHill Design and Scott Humphries
for helping the DCEF redesign The Knight Errant.
We’ve received tons of great feedback on the new
look and feel. We are fortunate to work with such
great partners who bring life to our vision!
www.humphill.com
Barrister drew inspiration from what many of
our peers in the NIC have been doing for years. With the assistance of outside
legal counsel (Fraternal Law) and what is commonly done by our peers in the
NIC and Panhellenic organizations, Barrister’s corporate structure was defined
and established. Barrister Capital has a board of directors that is composed of
alumni of The Delta Chi Fraternity. All BCC Board Members are volunteers and
receive no compensation for Barrister’s oversight and their service on the board.
Barrister Property Management (BPM) is the operational arm of BCC; they
leverage national strategic partnerships with vendors and coordinate local
resources to manage all operations. BPM leverages industry-leading property
management software to provide a seamless experience for the resident,
including E-Leasing, billing, online tenant payments, vendor payments, and
maintenance of your facility, allowing your House Corporation volunteers to
serve as strategic partners.
In addition to applying best practices to the rooming house model, BCC/ BPM
is a member of the Fraternal Housing Association. Barrister’s membership in
the FHA represents Delta Chi nationally and creates partnerships to ensure
best practices are known and applied in its support of every Chapters’ unique
needs.
BCC is uniquely qualified to help your local chapter and House Corporation
navigate IRS guidelines to leverage the tax-deductible giving opportunities
provided by the Delta Chi Educational Foundation through the Educational
Chapter Housing Initiative (ECHI) accounts.
New Founder’s passing:
Roy Payne, Cornell ‘48: 1928-2020.
Roy was a 4 th Degree New Founder as
recognized by the Delta Chi Educational
Foundation. In his lifetime, he gave more than
$2 million through the DCEF to benefit the
members of Delta Chi; our largest donor. Most
notably, he preserved the Cornell Delta Chi
Chapter House, at a perilous time when it was
uncertain if Delta Chi would retain the property.
He passed onto that higher court in the fall
of 2020, at his home in North Carolina.

ANNUAL REPORT
2020
Brothers,
The Delta Chi Educational Foundation had a strong year in 2020 by all measures, COVID
impacts notwithstanding. Foundation total assets in 2020 grew by over $540,000 to $3.7MM.
We grew the Foundation Endowment by over $310,000. And for the first time in our history,
we established a 6-month operating reserve fund to bolster our financial stability. After
accounting for the endowment and operating reserve funds, unrestricted revenue still exceeded
expenses by nearly 8%. The Foundation granted over $350,000 for student member
scholarships, housing grants, and Fraternity educational initiatives in 2020.
Our successes of 2020 have the Educational Foundation well positioned to support our
brotherhood in 2021 and continue to grow.
