Have you ever taken time to think about what your life would be
like without Delta Chi? Would you have grown into the person you
are today? Would you have learned the skills that accelerated your
professional career? Would you have the same network of friends
decades later? Delta Chi is an experience that has shaped the lives of
over 120,000 brothers and counting. Throughout this experience, our
donors have elevated our brothers and chapters by providing financial
support for many of the educational and leadership programs.
As you wrap up 2023 and start reflecting on the possibilities in 2024,
think about the Delta Chi experience and how your support can shape
and inspire the lives of future generations.
Thank you to all of our donors for believing in Delta Chi and for
your support!

Chairman’s
Welcome
Steak for
Dinner
V2:2023
Rod Arnold,
Texas A&M ‘88
My father never had the opportunity to “go
away to college.” He was not a fraternity man.
Dad was born a west Texas farmer’s son, far
removed from the suburban north Dallas life
he would later afford his children. Wanting a
brighter future, he acquired his limited college
education at night school, attending only the
engineering classes he could immediately apply
to his new career in hydraulics manufacturing.
No time for the arts. Through hard work and
focus, he rose from entry-level sales to Executive
Vice President in an astonishingly short time.
College life in general, fraternities, and my
starting a new chapter from the ground up… all
new to him. Early on, he couldn’t understand how
it enhanced my academics. From a distance, his
support usually took the form of simple quotes
and Texas colloquialisms delivered via a long
cord and handset from the wall phone; thoughts
meant to stick with me when he wasn’t there in person to offer advice.
A few were invariably lifted from his myriad familiar-named Dallas
businessmen friends (among them, Zig Ziglar was his Sunday school teacher).
Others were unquestionably his originals.
His quotes echo in my mind whenever I’m contemplating goals, professional or
personal. Some have certainly found their way into the Foundation’s growth
strategies these past few years.
“There’s a big difference between watching a herd of cattle walk by…
and having steak for dinner.”
“Think of your goals like riding a bicycle. If you’re not pedaling hard,
but you’re not falling off, you’re going downhill…fast.”
“A big pile of bricks doesn’t build a house. It’s the orderly laying of bricks
that brings the desired result.”
“Today is the oldest you’ve ever been and the youngest you’ll ever be.
Use today to the fullest.”
“Some people say motivation & goals don’t last. Well, neither does bathing,
so I recommend both daily.”
“The most important things in life aren’t things.”
“Life has three phases…Learn > Earn > then Return.”
All of these sayings reflect the important distinction between simply thinking
about goals and taking action to make them happen. Our Foundation is on
an amazing trajectory, as reflected in our form 990 on our website. But it’s
no accident; it’s because great donors like you and great brothers are working
tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain an aggressive project velocity.
A lot of planning, diligence in the details…and maybe an idea or two from
thoughts planted long ago.
Thank you for your continued support.
W2023 Trustee Society Experience
When it comes to supporting Delta Chi, our annual Trustee
Society donors demonstrate what it means to assist in the
acquisition of a sound education. These individuals are
responsible for our continuous growth and the advancement of
Delta Chi’s educational initiatives. Our annual Trustee Society
Experience is a way to show these donors appreciation and
gratitude. Over the summer, we convened in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida, to get a sneak peek at the 2024 Convention property
and to celebrate our Trustee Society donors during a sunset
cruise. It was one of the largest events to date, including
brothers from all over the country, the Board of Regents,
and Barrister Capital.
The Trustee Society is the Delta Chi Educational Foundation’s
premier giving society. These donors who give at this level are
considered the most impactful and loyal donors. Trustee Society
donors get recognized with a unique lapel pin, invitations to
exclusive events, including the Trustee Society Experience,
and recognition on the DCEF website for their generosity.
Captain of Industry:
Howard Thomas
Howard Thomas
With its rich history and profound values of friendship, character, justice, and education, the Delta Chi Fraternity is a haven for
those seeking friendships, personal growth, and professional mentorship in a supportive community. Many live prosperous lives
and hold successful careers while giving back to Delta Chi. Others hear a calling to go above and beyond to build the bridge
between our legacy and a bright future.
Amidst this extensive array of stories, Howard Thomas’ journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of Delta Chi.
His experience serves as a beacon, illuminating the invaluable impact fraternity and alumni support can have on a young brother’s
formative years.
Augusta University in Georgia is a fusion of a prestigious public research university and an eminent academic medical center.
Yet, in the hallways of such an institution, one finds spaces like Delta Chi, where young minds like Howard gain an education
and acquire life values, leadership skills, and enduring bonds.
In 2005, against the backdrop of Augusta University’s welcoming campus, Howard embarked on a significant new journey,
becoming a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. This wasn’t merely about joining a group but embracing an organization and
its values. Here, he discovered something more profound: a new family in the form of Delta Chi. This fraternity wasn’t just
an ancillary aspect of his university years; it became a pivotal cornerstone.
In addition to camaraderie, the values and vision of Delta Chi resonated deeply with Howard. It was as if the fraternity’s ethos
seamlessly meshed with his convictions. The fraternity’s magnetic allure was so strong that it was no surprise when Howard,
always showing leadership potential, was entrusted with significant responsibilities. Several traits stand out prominently when
reflecting on the facets that define Howard’s character: his unmistakable intelligence, unwavering independence, and his passion
for ensuring that others reach success alongside him.
As an active member, he encountered countless mentors and brothers who guided him through his academic career and beyond.
He quickly rose to prominence within the chapter, building a solid foundation that many current brothers are reaping the
rewards of today.
He started his leadership journey serving as the “F”, where he displayed an unparalleled commitment to ensuring the well-being
of his fraternity brothers. Recognized by his dedication and leadership capabilities, his chapter soon elevated him to a more
pivotal role as the “B”. This trajectory within the chapter was not just about holding titles; it was a testament to the deep bond
with his brothers and his passion for Delta Chi.
His transition from university life to the vast, challenging realm of the professional world is noteworthy. As a mechanic in the
Navy, he showcased unmatched tenacity, balancing military duties with academic pursuits. This phase highlighted his dedication
and the importance of support structures like Delta Chi in maintaining focus and determination.
Howard pivoted into the business landscape by becoming a successful aviation mechanic at Standard Aero, working on private
jets. He soon decided it was time to branch out into something else, and an opportunity presented itself. “After building my tool
collection and seeing how great Snap-On tools work, I decided that is where I want to be. I remember telling my Snap-On rep,
Dave, that I wanted to buy his route (a certain geographic area where a salesperson sells Snap-On tools to businesses) when he
retires. He asked if I was serious.”

75
After reviewing the numbers, Howard purchased his first route. The rest is history. Three years
later, he now owns two routes and is ranked 32nd out of over 10,000 Snap-On franchisees
worldwide. And this is just the beginning. Howard plans to expand to more routes in the next
few years!
Founded in 1920, Snap-On is a leading global innovator, manufacturer, and marketer of tools,
equipment, diagnostics, repair information, and systems solutions for professional users
performing critical tasks. These great tools can be found in more than 130 countries around
the world. You can even see Snap-On Tools on the big screen. Since 2005, Snap-On tools have
appeared in over 100 feature films and countless TV shows.
A close analysis of Howard’s success reveals a blend of hard work, intelligence, and people
skills. A hands-on leader, he stressed the importance of interpersonal relationships and understanding
client needs. This is where his Delta Chi training proved invaluable, emphasizing
empathy, active listening, and commitment to excellence.
His approach to business is reflective of his broader life philosophy. As Howard remarked,
“The crossroads of college choices and career paths are often overwhelming. Yet, the principles
of Delta Chi, paired with my experience at Snap-on, provided a sense of purpose, allowing me
to facilitate success for myself and others too.”
Howard noted the need to be diverse in your skill set as a business owner, “You are the CEO
and the janitor and everything in between. You have to constantly re-evaluate and re-tool
your processes. My daily motto is that you can’t be married to any one process. There is always
a better or more efficient way to do things. And you always have to find the best way to treat
your employees because when they have success, you’ll have success.”
Yet, amidst this bustling professional journey, his bond with Delta Chi remained unwavering.
A significant part of this bond materializes through his continual support for the Delta Chi
Educational Foundation. However, monetary contributions are just one facet of his involvement.
His passion for mentoring showcases his commitment to guiding the fraternity’s younger
members, emphasizing alumni’s crucial role in sustaining and nourishing the fraternity’s
legacy. This mentor-mentee relationship bridges the gap between academic life and professional
pursuits, presenting younger members with insights that textbooks and lectures often
cannot provide.
Howard’s life is defined by more than Delta Chi and his professional milestones. He is a loving
husband to his wife, Amy, and a fantastic father to three children. Howard’s insatiable quest
for knowledge persists as he and his wife recently embarked on a journey to explore Scotland’s
history, connecting with his and Amy’s lineage. The trip was highlighted by tours of the
National History Museum, the National Art Gallery, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the
King’s residence in Edinburgh.
Howard has had success in the sports arena as well. Growing up playing football, he was
athletic and loved team sports, which was part of the draw in joining Delta Chi. Once departing
the Navy, he spent significant time in the gym and met a friend who introduced him to
the Highland Games. It took one practice to inspire Howard to enter the competition. During
his many years competing, he moved as high as 2nd highest tier in the sport.
Howard Thomas’s Delta Chi recognition includes the recognition of the prestigious Delta Chi
Fraternity Men at War Pin, reserved for alumni or undergraduates who’ve served in active
combat zones. This award, more than just a lapel pin and commemorative coin, represents
genuine bravery and service. It isn’t granted for general military service but specifically for
those who’ve faced combat challenges.
The legacy of Delta Chi is enriched with stories like Howard’s. These narratives not only inspire
current fraternity members but also underscore the importance of alumni in shaping, guiding,
and nurturing the fraternity’s future. As Founder Albert Sullard Barnes said, “Delta Chi is not
a weekend or once-a-year affair, but a lifelong opportunity and privilege.”
In sum, Howard Thomas’s journey isn’t just about personal success; it’s a shining exemplar of
the symbiotic relationship between an individual and his fraternity. Howard’s story is a vivid
reminder of the indomitable spirit that Delta Chi instills and how dreams can transform into
tangible realities with the support of the fraternity and its members.

Impact Report: Leadership
Reed Davis, Appalachian State ‘02
Delta Chi has long been heralded as an experience where leaders are forged and friendships
are born. Throughout its history, we’ve witnessed countless tales of members stepping up,
embracing challenges, and setting benchmarks.
Reed Davis stands amongst this lineage of trailblazers. A proud alumnus of Appalachian
State, Reed perfectly personifies the spirit of brotherhood, the tenets of leadership, and
unwavering fidelity to Delta Chi.
In 2002, Reed completed his studies at Appalachian State University with a double major
in Finance and Banking and Computer Information Systems and a minor in Psychology.
Beyond his commendable educational background, he remained dedicated to Delta Chi
throughout his undergraduate years, and then into his early professional career, and beyond.
During his freshman year, Reed got to know one of the Delta Chi brothers, Jonathan
Stovall, Appalachian State ‘02, while living in the same residence hall. Reed, a marching
band member, had to stay on campus for a Thanksgiving weekend football game while his
family traveled elsewhere. Jonathan, as soon as he learned that, in the spirit of friendship,
invited Reed to his family’s home for Thanksgiving dinner. That gesture cemented their
friendship and Reed’s connection with Delta Chi. “Jonathan showed me what true friendship,
leadership, and fraternity was all about. By sophomore year, when I got invited to
join Delta Chi, I jumped at it,” Reed recalls.
Beyond their collegiate years at Appalachian State, Reed’s and Jonathan’s dedication to
Delta Chi has persisted. Post-graduation, they both joined Delta Chi’s Headquarters staff
as Leadership Consultants. Their professional collaboration within Delta Chi further
solidified a friendship that remains strong to this day. Reed made significant strides
during his time on staff with Delta Chi. Under the supervision of Executive Director
Emeritus Ray Galbreth, Missouri ‘69, Reed effectively utilized the leadership competencies
he honed during his undergraduate years. “Ray and the directors trained us and
sent us out on the road. We learned so much from him.” Reed also served as the Director
of Expansion for two years, working with many alumni and staff members who remain
some of his closest friends today, including Rusty Williams, Georgia Southern ’05, who is
Godfather to Reed’s youngest daughter and several others from that group on staff, as well
as mentors like Jim Marascio, Bryant ’93. “My time on staff was incredible,” Reed recalls,
“and I’m fortunate to have many great friendships with Delta Chis from App State and
other chapters.”
Reed commented, “My role at Delta Chi laid the groundwork for my subsequent professional
path. The skills and experiences I gained proved invaluable as I transitioned into
the broader corporate arena.” Reed’s capabilities were quickly recognized by Truist Bank
(formerly BB&T), where he has been a valuable asset for over 17 years. Rising from the
ranks of College Recruiting and traditional Human Resource roles, Reed’s current position
as Senior Human Capital Enablement Partner and Senior Vice President reflects his dedication
and skill set.
Drawing from his rich experience, Reed shared some valuable insights about leadership.
“When you delegate, trust is crucial. Accept the outcomes and provide constructive feedback.
Your job should be to empower those you work with to do their job. Bad news doesn’t
get better with time. It does not make a bad situation better to wait it out. Address the
issue and fix it, if possible. Otherwise, move on and learn from it. And most importantly,
always celebrate the victories of others. Those in your professional and personal life have
successes, and you should absolutely celebrate those! There is nothing more fulfilling than
seeing those around you succeed.”
Continued

8
97
Reed balances a successful professional life with a tight-knit family life. He has been married to Lindsey for 15 years, and they
have three kids. Outside the office, you’ll find him traveling with his family, soaking up nature, or coaching his son’s lacrosse
team. His bond to Delta Chi remains unbroken. He volunteers as the “BB” for his chapter and stays in touch with his fraternity
brothers through Delta Chi events – like Convention and DCEF gatherings – occasional weekend group trips with chapter brothers,
lake weekends with former staff members, continuous group texts and Appalachian State Mountaineers football.
Reed Davis’s professional trajectory is a compelling illustration of how fraternity connections can significantly impact personal
and professional development. From his foundational years at Appalachian State to his career growth at Truist Bank, Reed
exemplifies leadership, commitment, and the enduring values of Delta Chi.
Spotlight on Hatcher Heavyside:
An Embodiment of Delta Chi’s Values
In the close-knit community of Stephenville and the broader
world of Delta Chi, few have exemplified what it means to be a
brother, leader, and student as robustly as Hatcher Heavyside,
the current “A” of the Tarleton State Chapter.
The global events of 2020 affected many, and as students
grappled with the new realities, Hatcher drew inspiration and
strength from his surroundings. With familial ties to Tarleton
State University, Hatcher’s school choice was influenced by his
parents, both proud Tarleton alumni. The allure of fraternity
life, recommended by his mother and encouraged by a highschool
friend already in Delta Chi, soon beckoned.
Hatcher’s journey within Delta Chi has been nothing short of
remarkable. After taking on the “E” in 2020, Hatcher rejuvenated
the Alumni Golf Tournament. This included a huge
celebration during his chapter’s homecoming tailgate, fostering
connections across generations. His achievement was
recognized with the coveted Region III’s 2022 Fred Hammert
Delta Chi of the Year Award.
While his accolades are noteworthy, what stands out most
about Hatcher is his unwavering commitment to the core value
of brotherhood. He often credits Matthew Stouffer, his ‘big
brother’ in the fraternity, for instilling this profound understanding.
The fraternity’s philanthropic endeavors, especially
with the Jimmy V Foundation, gained added poignancy after
the unfortunate passing of his grandfather to cancer in 2022.
Beyond fraternity life, Hatcher’s passion for mechanical engineering,
focusing on prosthetics, is awe-inspiring. Personal
experiences, including witnessing a family friend’s challenges
after losing a leg and enduring his own ACL injury in high
school, fueled this interest. This determination is even more
remarkable considering Hatcher’s early-life battles, having
been born prematurely with cerebral palsy.
In academics, Hatcher’s excellence was acknowledged with
The Washburn Scholarship, a prestigious accolade awarded to
those who epitomize Delta Chi’s ideals. Named in recognition
of Miles Washburn, Massachusetts ‘87, this scholarship
recognizes community involvement, work responsibilities,
chapter involvement, academic achievements, and financial
considerations.
For those who’ve interacted with him or been touched by his
initiatives, it’s evident that Hatcher isn’t just a member of
Delta Chi - he embodies its spirit, values, and ritual. He is a
beacon to Delta Chi’s active members, alumni, and supporters.
Hatcher offers this message to the DCEF donors: “Thank you
for giving me this opportunity. You took the time to give back
to the brotherhood you committed to, setting the example for
people like me to follow. That means the world to me!”

Florida Golf Tournament
Fore! The Florida Golf Tournament is on the verge of surpassing $100,000
raised for the Delta Chi Educational Foundation. Established in 2010, each year,
brothers from across the country ascend to Orlando, Florida, to enjoy a day of
brotherhood and to raise money for the chapter scholarship accounts and
leadership development opportunities for the undergraduates. The tournament
is designed to allow brothers to support Delta Chi’s educational endeavors as
a sponsor or a player and has supported 14 fund accounts.
The Delta Chi Educational Foundation appreciates the continued support and
effort of the alumni who make this tournament possible. 2024 will definitely be
a hole-in-one!
