Chairman’s
Welcome
Rod Arnold,
Texas A&M ‘88
“A Capital Idea”
OBeyond the congratulations due to our donors for
their generosity and the work of our staff during
yet another record-setting year, I find the most
satisfaction in our Foundation Board’s efforts to
maintain project velocity on the larger goals at
hand for our brotherhood.
With the challenges we’ve all faced over the past
two years, it would be extremely easy and understandable
to retract in philosophy, strategy, and
action plan. Many of us have done so, on levels
both personal and professional. And yet, others
have seen opportunity in the calamity. I recently
read an article focused on a particular business
leader’s philosophy going into 2022; his mantra
could be best summed up by the phrase, “Stay
focused on the ‘solves.” While it has become
extremely easy for our days to all blend together
(also known as getting lost in the weeds), the
benefit of a longer-term vision always serves as
a reminder of the greater goals at hand. What
challenges ahead of us will we solve?
The Foundation’s focus on permanently solving
long-term needs within our brotherhood has
remained steadfast. This focus has not involved
exploring uncharted territory, but merely having
the courage and determination to follow the
winning formula employed by so many other
organizations similar to our own; to raise and
increase principal savings to build a future, to
encourage immediate gifts for the needs at hand,
and to serve as a tax-advantaged mechanism
for our donors’ desires to give.
This leads me to share with our alumni at large
that we have conducted and completed a Feasibility
Study, led by Pennington & Company, to serve
as the planning stage for what will become our
brotherhood’s first-ever capital campaign. While
this is exciting news, to be sure, you can be
confident that we are taking the entire process
very seriously and carefully. We will keep you
informed as this project develops.
I also want to remind and invite our alumni to join
us in St. Louis this July for Delta Chi’s biennial
Convention. There is absolutely no prerequisite for
attending a Delta Chi Convention, even if it’s your
first. All you have to do to register is follow the
prompts at www.deltachiconvention.com. Plenty
of fun alumni-related activities planned by the
Foundation for you to enjoy, even if you can only
join for a couple of days. Please reach out to our
staff with any questions you may have. We look
forward to welcoming you into our greater fold
and thank you for your continued support of
The Brotherhood of a Lifetime.
Executive Director’s Message
Delta Chi is more than an organization; it’s an experience that never stops providing. Much of a
member’s time in Delta Chi is spent as an alumnus, and what a rewarding experience this can be!
As alumni, we can advance Delta Chi through our leadership, involvement, and support. Your
actions help provide our undergraduate brothers with a meaningful Delta Chi experience, laying
the foundation for their future years as alumni. We are grateful for all that you do for the
Fraternity, and we hope you will join us this summer for what will be a memorable experience
in St. Louis!
Alumni Chapters
Your Delta Chi experience does not end at graduation. The
Fraternity’s alumni chapters are recognized voting chapters
of alumni from various chapters and colonies organized in a
particular geographic area or city. They provide an opportunity
for area alumni to be involved with Delta Chi and socialize and
network with brothers. Consider joining or starting an alumni
chapter to advance your Delta Chi experience further! Visit
Captain of Industry
John Mica
The Honorable John L. Mica, Florida ‘67 is considered one of the most knowledgeable leaders and experts in
Transportation and Infrastructure. In the U.S. House of Representatives, his leadership over two decades helped
shape American transportation policy and guided nearly every successful major infrastructure legislative initiative.
In addition to public service, Mica enjoyed a successful business career that spanned nearly two decades active
in real estate, communications, and international trade.
Reflections on his rise to power and influence, along with his pursuit of relevance in retirement is a story
worth exploration.
In high school Mica was an active member of the
Republican party, which carried over into his college
days at the University of Florida. In 1959, he became
involved with Richard Nixon’s campaign. During those
formative years at UF, he became very involved with
the Florida Blue Key organization and led several
educational initiatives in the surrounding communities.
He also joined the Delta Chi Fraternity. After college,
he pursued his passion for public service, working with
several Republican campaigns and in administrative
roles within those offices.
“I quickly discovered that I would need an additional
source of income outside of public service. I got into real
estate development and stayed with that my entire life.
I’m proud to have led the second largest condo conversion
in Washington, D.C. Additionally, I became involved with
International trade and cellular/ satellite communications
working closely with friends at Harris Corporation. I met
my wife, Pat, during those years and knew immediately
she was the one for me. We were married within six
months and have been together for 50 years.”
“I would route myself through Washington whenever
possible to gain visibility. In 1976 I secured a seat in
the Florida legislature State House of Representatives.
In 1980 I worked with Paula Hawkins’ bid to the U.S.
Senate and went on to work in her office as Chief of
Staff between 1980-1985.”
Finally, in 1992 Mica won his seat in the U.S. House
of Representatives, a position he would hold for 24 years
until 2017. While serving in the U.S. House of Representatives,
Brother Mica hosted Delta Chi members at
the Capitol several times. He also worked closely
with and formed friendships with other Brothers
serving our country, including Senator Richard
Shelby, Alabama ‘57: “I helped set up Shelby’s
office in the Capitol.”
He was selected as the Chairman and Ranking Member
of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Additionally, he chaired five major subcommittees
during his tenure, including Aviation, Civil Service,
Government Operations, Transportation Oversight, and
Criminal Justice & Drug Policy.
As leader of the Aviation Subcommittee following 9/11,
he was instrumental in bringing the American aviation
industry back from some of its most difficult days. He
was the primary author of America’s Transportation
Security Act and successfully spearheaded the construction
of the US Capitol Visitors Center. He was honored by
having his portrait be displayed in the US Capitol Complex.
His support of major infrastructure projects has
had a significant impact on American communities from
coast to coast. His P3 privatization initiatives have
helped launch and finance dozens of major infrastructure
projects in Florida and across the United States.

53
In Central Florida, he was instrumental in launching
commuter rail service, initiating the I-4 reconstruction,
and spearheading the new VA Hospital. Just prior to
Mica’s leaving Congress, he was recognized by an
independent university study as one of the top two most
effective members of the U. S. House of Representatives.
Former President George W. Bush said about Mica, “In
Congress, there are talkers and doers. John Mica is a doer”.
He has also been awarded five honorary degrees. He is
one of a handful of Americans to receive recognition
from nearly every National Veterans Service Organization.
John and his wife Pat have two adult children and have
resided in Winter Park, FL, since 1972.
Serving Delta Chi
As a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity, joining in
December 1961, he rose to the office of “A”, serving three
consecutive terms, and was instrumental in raising funds
and designing the current Chapter House. He was tapped
by Delta Chi’s Executive Director, Dr. Kenneth Brasted,
Florida ‘35 to help expand Delta Chi in the south. Mica,
as an undergraduate representative, visited and evaluated
interest groups that led to the colonization of Georgia
Southern, Embry- Riddle, Troy State, and Valdosta. Mica
attended Delta Chi’s 1966 St. Louis Convention, where he
met Executive Director Buck Buchanan, Wisconsin ‘35,
and has been attending ever since. Mica’s brothers
are also Delta Chi members: Dave Mica, Florida ‘77
(pictured on cover, Past Florida “A”) and Dan Mica,
Florida Alumni Initiate ‘12.
Mica’s first job was at The Delta Chi Fraternity as
Assistant to the Executive Director and Editor of The
Quarterly. He went to work in the original HQ location
on Clinton Street in Iowa City (above the bank);
314 Church Street wasn’t purchased until 1969. Mica
is extremely proud about rebranding The Quarterly in
1969 to be more current with the times, though he asked
for forgiveness more than permission: “Brasted called
me into his office after it hit the presses….he was none
too happy, but it was too late, and the rebrand was
met with wide approval from the membership.”
Brother Mica was recognized as Delta Chi of the Year in
2005 and inducted into the Order of the White Carnation
in 2010 (Delta Chi’s highest honor). He has worked hard to
establish scholarship funds at six institutions, including the
Delta Chi Educational Foundation, where he has achieved
Martlet Club lifetime giving status ($50,000+).
In the fall of 2018, the Florida Chapter was closed for a
risk management issue. A small group of 15 dedicated
brothers stayed the course during the suspension and
met several times with Mica as he hosted pizza dinners.
He took a personal interest in each of them. These were
freshmen when the chapter closed and seniors when
the Chapter reopened in fall 2020. Their Delta Chi experience
is a unique one, and so is their relationship with
Brother Mica.
In January 2020, Mica and his wife Pat launched a fundraising
campaign to aid in the chapter’s return, focusing
on housing. No one could have predicted the pandemic
hitting just two months later. Not to be deterred,
the Micas proceeded with a lead gift of $10,000,
and successfully raised $50,000 from other alumni
to supplement housing costs for the returning members.
In fall 2020, Delta Chi reopened with a virtual recruitment.
Mica made regular trips to Gainesville from
Winter Park to guide the new chapter in their
development; the pizza-dinners continued. He also
started granting scholarships out of the Florida-Mica
Chapter Scholarship Account on a merit and financial
need basis. He organized spaghetti scholarship dinners
(coat and tie) and brought in alumni to help present
the awards – he made it an event to remember.
Enlisting the help of a generous donation from Chip
Merlin, Florida ‘80 through the DCEF, recruitment
services were provided from All Pro Rush, and the chapter
doubled in size in the fall of 2021. In spring 2022, Mica
granted scholarships for six members to attend the
Regional Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA: “None
of these guys really know how to run a fraternity, all
the institutional knowledge was lost in the two-year
suspension; it is critical to their development and the
Chapter’s existence that they have access to best
practices and peer-to-peer learning.”
Inevitably, there will be times in our lives when the
Fraternity takes a backseat to family or career development.
Still, we can always find a way to give back with
either time, talent, or treasure, as Brother Mica has
modeled. Thank you, John, for all you’ve done and
continue to do to advance Delta Chi!

ANNUAL REPORT
2021
Brothers,
The Delta Chi Educational Foundation (DCEF) had another year of growth and increased stability
in 2021. Foundation total assets grew by $400,000 to a total of $4.16MM, breaking the
$4MM threshold for only the second time in our history. This marked the DCEF’s 3rd consecutive
year of growth, with total assets having increased 36% since 2018. Unrestricted revenue
for 2021 exceeded expenses by 17%, and we continued to grow the endowment. The Foundation
granted nearly $315,000 in support of student member scholarships, housing grants, and
Fraternity educational initiatives in 2021.
Our successes of 2021 have the Educational Foundation well positioned to support our
brotherhood in 2022 and continue to grow. I hope you will join me in making a gift to the
DCEF general fund in 2022 to keep the momentum going.
Impact Report: Leadership
A Portrait in Leadership:
“As a leader, you’re not in charge;
you’re responsible for those in your charge.”
Like most great leaders, Sean Conrad, Gorham State
’97 has developed influence quietly, humbly, through
personal relationships and facilitating connections with
others for action-oriented results. It’d been 21 years
since graduation and his last fraternity involvement;
juggling a successful logistics career, two young boys
(Hayden and Dylan), his wife’s interior design business
taking-off (Kelly Conrad & Co.), but Sean decided to
join the newly formed Delta Chi Atlanta Area Alumni
Chapter (DXAAAC) in 2018. There he found alumni
relationships with common values in men who were
in the same place of life. He began attending monthly
Brothers’ Night Out dinners, and his interest grew.
Now he’s a member of the Georgia Tech House Corporation,
the North Georgia Alumni Board of Trustees, an
officer in the DXAAAC, Regional Leadership Conference
Planner (DXAAAC hosted in Destin, FL 2020), a three-time
“A”s’ Academy Facilitator, a four-time RLC Facilitator
at Regions IV, VII, an VIII, and spearheads Delta Chi’s
international sponsorship and participation of the Max
Gruver Foundation on Hazing Education’s annual 5K
(70 Delta Chi participants in 2022)!
He’s increased his contributions to the DCEF as a
four-time Trustee Society donor, a Lamp of Learning
Society donor, and recently recognized as a Leges Club
($15,000+) lifetime giving donor. What sets his donor
record apart is loyalty; 252 gifts since 1999. Sean
started with $25 per month, and continued that commitment
for two decades before his career allowed him
to do more: “I’ve always believed in the Brotherhood of
a Lifetime.” Sean and Kelly attended the Trustee Society
Experience in Lexington, and Winter Alumni Weekend
in Austin, building new friendships and having a lot of
fun along the way!
LEADERSHIP
Through it all, Sean’s personal touch shines: “His enthusiasm
is contagious” says Weslee Knapp, Georgia
Tech ‘98 owner of Kellar-Knapp Realty. Sean has quickly
built the trust of IHQ Staff, the Board of Regents,
the DCEF, alumni, and Chapter members in an everpolarizing
society. Ask Sean about his leadership and he
quickly gives credit to the people around him, “I’m just
the connector” he humbly states.
“I grew up in Portland, Maine and went to the University
of New Hampshire my freshman year; I rowed Crew
- very competitive and like a fraternity but without
the ritualistic values. Two years later I enrolled at the
University of Southern Maine (Gorham State). I walked
into the Delta Chi house during RUSH and found an old
composite in the foyer of 23 Pebble Street - I pointed
to a picture and said, “That’s my stepdad!” At that
moment everything changed for me.
Roger Cote, Gorham State ‘76 married my mom
during my senior year of high school. I had seen some
of his Delta Chi stuff but had no idea he was one of
the key guys who spearheaded the chapter’s early years
and led the house corporation; he was royalty. Through
Delta Chi we established a great friendship that grew
into the natural love a father and son would share.
Alumni were present all the time in our Chapter, which
is probably one of the reasons I’m now at the Tech
house so frequently! Those guys were mentors to me
throughout college and got me involved in my career.
Matthew Lapointe, Gorham State ‘94 gave me my
first opportunity to work in logistics, unloading baggage
at the airport. I built relationships with everyone
in airport operations.
One of my managers gave me the opportunity to apply
for my first post-graduate job, with Delta Air Lines, and
funded my one-way ticket to Los Angeles to begin my
career. I borrowed $1,500 from my grandfather, took
two suitcases, bought a used car, and lived out of it
for my first week in L.A. I’ve always tried to be kind to
others, and it has always served me well. I befriended a
guy in training school and slept on his couch for weeks
until I got on my feet.

I worked for Delta for eight years, which is where I met
Kelly (ZTA), she was a Flight Attendant. I’ve worked for
several different logistics companies, all around the
country. At Swissport, after 9/11 and all the planes who
were diverted to Newfoundland started arriving, they
needed help in customs checking-in all the planes and
cargo. I was one of the only ones who knew the software
side of things, launching another specialization for
me. Understanding software that moves cargo around
the world, and the relationships that make it possible;
I had the understanding and personality to make a leap
in my career.
I took a role as VP of Operations for a growing truck
company. I developed a knack for turning things
around. One of my favorite books is The First 90 Days
by Michael Watkins. Eventually my career choices led
me into the sales side of the industry, but business
development is a tough business. You hear “NO” a lot.
I had to learn how to stay positive, manage my personal
growth and take care of myself.
I attended a live podcast session with Jeffrey and
Jennifer Gitomer. I stayed afterwards to make a personal
connection about a common experience we shared in
L.A. A few days later I noticed a grammatical error on
their social media, so I made a short video to point
out the error and thought their marketing team would
want to know. The next morning on the podcast,
Jennifer referenced my effort! Ever since we’ve had a
good relationship, and through that relationship I’ve
received a lot of mentoring! This world is about
relationships, not transactions.
Through these learnings I’ve adopted a Vision Board
into my daily life. I’ve brought that to my Delta Chi
involvement, and when we do a Vision Board, we
achieve our goals. It’s about community, communication,
accountability. These aren’t catch-phrases, these
are personal relationships, and that’s the difference
maker. A boss tells people what they must do to
achieve a goal. A leader asks what people can do
to advance a vision.
Volunteerism is a quality that Kelly and I are working
hard to instill in our kids. In addition to Delta Chi,
I’ve been tapped by the Metro-Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce to help lead workforce development
initiatives for the logistics industry in Elementary,
Middle, and High Schools. I’m honored to do the work
and love the relationships I’m building along the way.
Delta Chi has really made a profound difference in my
life, maybe now more than ever. Facilitating at the
Fraternity’s leadership programs have helped me
articulate what I’ve done for so long and in so many
ways throughout my life and career. The framework
of these programs, teaching our young brothers the
infrastructure they need to be successful in their
chapters and in their lives has been eye-opening and
very rewarding. I’m so thankful for the opportunity
to give back in such a meaningful way, and continue
my own personal development.
WISDOM NUGGETS
• Timing is everything in life. I completely believe that.
A lot of what happens in life is timing. But don’t let
failure stop you from reaching your goals.
• It’s important to sit in the front. Sit in the back and
you’re not gonna get noticed, you’re not going to stick
out, and mentally you’re holding yourself back.
• Part of leadership is knowing how to be memorable.
Be humble, be accountable. Honesty. Integrity.
• As much of a leader as I am, I need stronger people
around me who have ideas!

10 KNIGHT ERRANT | THE DELTA CHI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Impact Report: Programs
Impact Report: Scholarships
Did you know that the DCEF provides grants for student members to attend
the Undergraduate Inter-Fraternity Institute (UIFI)?
UIFI is a four-day, three-night, immersive leadership experience where
fraternity/sorority students come together to challenge conventional
wisdom, discover new solutions to critical problems and accelerate progress
in their fraternity/sorority communities. Participants will learn from each
other in large and small groups with space for individual reflection and
introspection.
The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV) presents the UIFI
in conjunction with the North-American Inter-Fraternity Conference (NIC).
The goal is for all participants to have a new perspective about their own
fraternity/sorority experience as a result of their time at UIFI.
Although UIFI has been on hiatus since 2019 here is what some of our
Brothers thought of UIFI after having attended the last sessions:
“Every Delta Chi should attend UIFI to gain an understanding of the shared
experiences that all Greeks have, which builds motivation to improve not
only their Chapter, but also their campus and the Greek community as
a whole.”
- Nicholas Aaron, Virginia Tech ‘22
UIFI has empowered me to do well in my Chapter and for my community.
I learned how to make my voice heard as a leader. I also learned about
values-based recruiting and making sure we get Brothers that will uphold
our values.”
-Isaac Villeda, Anchorage ‘22
“I expected a lot of “the same, old stuff” from UIFI, but my expectations
were surpassed, by far! I learned that the Greek Community really is the
sum of its parts, one chapter’s actions can have tremendous repercussions
on the rest of the Greek community. UIFI gives you the full experience
and explains why you made the right decision to be Greek.”
- Ivan Browning, Wilmington, ‘20
Keep an eye out for the stories of the 2022 attendees to hear all about
the impact this wonderful program is having on our Delta Chi brothers.
A life lived in service of
others often starts at a
young age. For Brother
Eugene Kim of the
Riverside Chapter,
volunteering has been
instrumental in his life.
“Growing up, my parents
encouraged me and
sometimes forced me
to volunteer.” Eugene’s
parents encouraged
Eugene to serve as a
student volunteer at the Methodist hospital, working
with the families of patients, guests, and patients
themselves.
Eugene found his perfect match in a fraternity, thanks
to his Riverside Brothers’ love of volunteerism. “Going
into college, I knew I wanted to join a fraternity,
but I didn’t know which one I’d want to join. My
father understood my need for brotherhood as he
experienced brotherhood during his service in the
Korean military. He encouraged me to continue
through rush.”
“The night I met the Delta Chis, we had a Zoom call
in which I was able to speak to many of the members
individually. We were supposed to speak
for 10 minutes each but many of my conversations
lasted over 20 because I clicked with the Brothers
right away. I knew I would be proud to be a Delta
Chi and was super excited when they offered me a
bid! My decision to join Delta Chi was immediately
proven the right one when shortly after joining the
chapter, I tested positive for COVID. My big brother
drove two and a half hours just to bring me some
soup and other items I needed. The brotherhood
is so strong with this group, we want to see our
Brothers be the best they can be academically,
philanthropically, socially or whatever that looks
like for the individual!”
“Now that I am out of my parents’ home, I search
for volunteer opportunities and really enjoy helping
others! I am proud to have Brothers who share that
feeling. My Delta Chi housemates and I like to spend
our free time volunteering. Currently, we’ve been
going Saturday or Sunday mornings to work with
‘Feeding Riverside’. We hand out sandwiches and
blankets to the homeless.”

Eugene is currently heading a project to help the
City of Riverside. In conjunction with the Riverside
City Hall and the mayor, Eugene is helping to coordinate
a large-scale cleanup of the downtown area.
Eugene is thankful for his chapter and their support
of the project. “I currently have more members on
my committee than I need to thanks to my Chapter’s
support of this project. We’ll get other Greek organizations
involved that will make this a massive event
in which we help clean up downtown Riverside.”
Further proving his feelings about joining Delta Chi
to be true, Eugene was selected as a recipient of the
Duane and Mary Meyer scholarship. “(Winning this
scholarship) means many things. It means that I’ve
done my job as a son to help my family with their
financial needs and I’m very proud of that. Most importantly
though, it shows me what Delta Chi is. Delta
Chi loves to help Brothers when they are down to raise
them up. I have always felt that about Delta Chi but I
think this scholarship is direct proof of that.”
“I want to give a sincere thank you to the donors,
but more than that, I’d like them to know that this
is life-changing. This is not only a sum of money to
help pay for my education, but will help raise me
up in life. I’m so grateful that these donors who I’ve
never met, are so willing to help me and the other
scholarship recipients.” - Eugene Kim
